If the interviewer was a little more compassionate, I think we'd have a better story with more information. It feels more like I just walked into this lady's house and tried to embarrass her about something she is already getting help for. It would have been nice to hear how it started happening, why she did or still does it, how she realized she had a problem, where she got support, and how she is rebuilding her life and what she is learning from this experience.
HoneyedHylian agreed. Everything u said was on point
HoneyedHylian You should have been the interviewer.
The interviewer sounds unfriendly and demanding 😓
Agreed, no empathy
So toxic..
I thought it was her sister. She sounds so familiar. And like entitled to bring out her flaws
bubblejumm She sounds like a total bish!
The interviewer won't exactly win a prize for groundbreaking journalism
"you don't find happiness in stuff, you just find debt in stuff". -very well said
Was literally word for word what I was going to post! It's getting scary in the consumer world with things like black Friday and deceptive marketing.
Yes indeed
Well you get happiness from clicking "buy" and more happiness when it comes in the post. But I don't think it tends to balance with the misery of debt.
@beverly ledbetter I spend that much to myself at all.
The interviewer was very curt, harsh, and condescending. It was obvious she was trying to break Michelle, maybe get her to cry and lose her composure--for ratings.
rude nterviewer
I hate the interviewer’s tone
The dolls are still worth a ton of money, these kind of doll increase un value over time. If she really regret buying them why is she not selling them?
it doesn't fix the problem. most people addicted to shopping do it to fill emptiness
nothing increases in value anymore in this era of high production. And thats the trap some who consider themselves " smart shopper " fell to .
@beverly ledbetter I love what you said and I agree .
@beverly ledbetter It's not that easy to sell things online .
She is paying high interest on the credit card she bought those with, they been in the basement 5yrs, even if she sold them for double she lost money.
Everybody should learn from Michelle Summerfield. She's very brave to face the camera and reveal her self-inflicted misery. She's proof that it's never too late. We all have to get up when we stumble and fall like her. God bless!
I also am a recovering shopaholic myself too so I understand what she’s going through. God bless her.
I'm glad she realizes her mistakes and wants to move on.
Minimalism is actually a very satisfying lifestyle. I used to have the same problem with too much shopping, but since I've become a minimalist I feel like the quality of my life has tremendously improved, because I spend less time worrying about stuff and more time living my life.
Yikes the interviewer :(
Everyone makes mistakes . There is a time we definitely bought things we really did not want to because of advertising and temptation. She did too but went just overboard . Stop being rude to her. The interviewer is so insensitive. Now that she realized she cam correct her mistake and get out of debt.
The interviewer comes across very rude!! I would have kicked her out of my house! Very insensitive!!
Even going to Goodwill can be addicting. Glad I saw this.
Yes. Thrifting is an esy addiction especially now that it's popular and not taboo or embarrassing like the past. The thrill of the hunt for cheap stuff is alluring. Everyone wants to get that special trrasure on the low.
There are two types of people: 'I bought a $600 you better believe I'm gonna wear it.' and 'This dress was $600, it's gonna go on display and I'm never wearing it'
Who even buys dress for 600$?! Most i paid was like 50$ and still think man i spend much on that piece of clothing..
Those are two very specific types of people
And I thought me spending 1k thrifting for clothes last year was bad
When I’m unhappy and just want to numb my mind I eat . So I’m overweight now
She could resell some of that stuff
At least she's not a hoarder.... Yet.
This is me right now and I can’t stop
At least she has a good taste in clothes that she can wear for a while while she pays it all off. A lot of shopaholics buy trendy and tacky crap that goes out of style quickly.
How did the interviewer land on the job? She is sooooo annoying and rude !
I sure wish i had those dolls....they are beautiful
I gave up hobbies and collecting crap, I now collect my hard earned money...
Good for you 👍
Joyce A-deg-bo-ye-ga is still with hobbies talented sewing and hand stitching I learned in high school I am not perfect but I take 30 minutes to practice what ever I want to make I have a big bigger bag of fabrics that are all different .
Joyce A-deg-bo-ye-ga from Lowell, Massachusetts .
I dream has always been was to be a Artist .
Unfortunately I relate to her smh lol
The interviewer is probably her sister...lol That is why she is being short.
Yeah or even a daughter.... Yeah seems like they know each other
We all have something we do that doesn’t need to have an agreeable explanation...
The bad thing is spending beyond your means.
Im glad this lady has begun to notice this and is changing herself
Well Journalism isn’t the interviewers thing.. this feels like she was supposed to do an assignment in College but failed miserably.
I see myself in this woman! This habit is filled with emotional drivers. It’s a way of numbing underlying pain instead of just feeling feelings that may hurt.
I think if she sells all those dolls and cloths she havent use, it will pay some of her debt
Impressed 👏🏻👏🏻💐
That Savannah doll is from Robert Tonner. She’s about 22” tall if I’m not mistaken. I’m also a doll collector and I have 4 of those particular dolls
I have ton of stuff still with tags attached..buuut I really believe that i will wear them someday lol
I think she learned her lesson. You don't find happiness in stuff.
Her doll collection might bring in some money.
im 29 and I'm going through the same thing.
A shopaholic doesn’t know why they are a shopaholic. Something from their past can trigger the addiction. Just like a alcoholic will always be a alcoholic, a Shopaholic will always be a Shopaholic. The good news is that it is treatable. A Shopaholic is not proud of what they became. Many deal with shame and guilt for the debt that they have created. Debt that can take years to pay off. Some pay off the debt and fall right back into it because they haven’t come to grips with their shopaholic addiction.
You can tell it’s really pathological for her, she doesn’t have a logical reason or purpose for the stuff it’s an impulse!
Bacall McElroy Just something she had to buy because she had to have it.
I think Savannah is beautiful.
Just starting to tackle my compulsive shopping myself. Wish me luck
Going thru the same journey…. You got this 💪💪
the interviewers' one word, monotone questions were horrible. anyone can do better than that, CBC
I agree with every one’s comments on the interviewer !! She is totally rude and not empathetic at all !!
You’re supposed to be neutral on your comments and also provide some support !! Your tone and questions are too harsh !! How did she even get that job ??😳🙄
The interviewer so unfriendly & so bossy really scary
i have been shoping for camping gears like crazy and thats because watching videos in youtube of backpackers talking about their stuff. until i realised they were sponsored by those companies. i felt some guilt but menwhile i recovered some loses selling a part of then in ebay. im still tempted some times but thank God i am aware of it.
Somebody just liked my comment less than a minute ago. Who is that kind soul?
My wardrobe cost me maybe 50 bucks a year, if that. I buy tops from the thrift store and I wear pj pants every day around the house and I get those as Christmas gifts from my mom every year. $19k on clothes is insane. I'm happy Michelle woke up.
3/20/19.....Older YT video but still informative.
Online shopping---stay home/go to work/stay up late---there is 24/7/365 shopping online & on tv shopping sites where they have cute/perky/"you must buy this" sales professionals/actors who come thru the tv screen & become your "best friend".
I have bought items online---eBay most of the time---but NEVER bought shoes/clothing b/c of size & quality + I want to see it on a person or in person---so I have shopped using tv sites. Some are good....some not so good.
Most ppl are buying online so many stores/companies have lost business/closed or in the process of downsizing.
Still too much American consumerism + "I deserve/want this" attitude + easy credit with min pmt plans.
ALL THIS has caused growing amt of hoarders + shopaholics + ppl in debt.....but has also caused a new "profession"----ppl who are "professional organizers" & who are keeping WalMart + The Container Store + others in business selling millions of plastic bins with tight lids!
So even "bad habits" can promote "new businesses"!
I spent almost $2,000 on QVC this ring and I can tell you I didn't mean it my wardrobe is doing the Macy's
The woman in the video could have been me tho. xd I hope I can get out of it :((((
Unprofessional interviewer. Ew.
Who is the interviewer and why did she not get fired on the spot after this aired?? ZERO CHARISMA!
What a hatch wrong with the interviewer?
i do not online shop. i only op shop.
Online shopping is definitely no no for me!!!! Often dissapointed bcos you only look through screen. Anyway if you hv a budget should not be a problem.
If you work for the money and spend it buying things you want fine, don't expect sympathy and don't spend other people's money.
I have lot clothes and some name brands use coupons clearance jcp koehles yard sales thriftstores
Her clothing is plain and she pay a lot of money to look drab
Leslie McClary ikr. That plaid dress for more than half a grand?! Yikes😬😬 this woman has bad fashion sense disorder along with her shopping addiction.
Corny jokes aside. I do hope she gets help, and finds a more healthy outlet for whatever’s making her feel the need to fill the void in her life with pointless stuff. I hope she gets out of debt and finds happiness in minimalism. Our society as a whole is way too materialistic and consumeristic as well.
Good improvement.....v proud of u
Lol, I started collecting vintage Barbie dolls as well.
Terrible interviewer.
Sell all she can to put money into her debt
She should sell it
At least look for less expensive alternatives, sheesh!
I wouldn't take advice from her..she us crazy
She's not crazy, being addicted to shopping can really be a real struggle; because for some people its a way to fill up how empty they might be feel.
I spent 27k last year on clothes. It didnt effect me one bit because we are well off. You have to be able to afford your spending.
I mean ya but that 27k could have been used for something better lol thats crazy !!!!!
This woman has too much money.
debt*
Glad she reformed and is much happier. "...take heed, lest in thinking too earnestly of the things of the body you forget the things of the soul: for material advantages do not elevate the spirit of a man." ~ Baha'i Faith
I shop for clothes too.....at Forever 21, Marshall's, TJ Maxx. I can't afford Saks 5th Avenue and I wouldn't even visit a store like that 😳
Nightmare wife.
$8000 on a Barbie doll , is be crying not giggling
Collecting dolls and scrapbooking are her "hobbies"? Not much talent is required for these "hobbies".
Give them Barbies to a child who's parents can't afford to buy them...and the reward of that would be greater than the price you paid for those 400 dollar Barbies.
Those dolls are not for kids or to be played with. Those are collectors dolls and very expensive
How you gonna spend $600 on that hideous dress!!!
Right?! Ugh!
What is it with women and clothes and shoes and handbags?
I'd rather spend the money on computers or something, clothes don't actually do that much and clothes that are 10% of the cost she is paying will do the same job.
She's laughing this not joke thank god I can't even turn on computer
Deepak Chopra book on her desk... Way to go!
Live Love Laugh Deepak Chopra is a quack.
Is her new addiction plastic surgery?
I noticed that too and she also lost weight. You can tell by the jeans she holds up. To big for her.
I spent 27k last year on clothes. It didnt effect me one bit because we are well off. You have to be able to afford your spending.
