the "plays guitar" thing might be more of a parallel to ness than youd assume actually. during earthbound, ness can learn a signature PK attack which takes on the name of whatever you entered in as your "favorite thing" during the games opening name entry sequence. if you dont put in anything yourself and just go with the default for this, its name becomes "PK Rockin". read into that what you will
Ness actually does play guitar. Itoi wrote lyrics to Earthbound's credits song "Smiles and Tears", which likely is from the perspective of Ness. One of the lines mentions a "very worn guitar pick".
The Sans is Ness meme theory inadvertently coming back to help inspire you with this one and solve everything is the most bitter of irony I've seen in this community.
I would find it really interesting if Dess was supposed to be like the perfect main character type, and then something horrible happened and she went missing, and now the world saving is left to the flawed side characters and the fucked-up human…very edgy and cool idea to me. Also, I like your theory and I think Toby was definitely inspired by Ness making Dess. I wonder what other places he drew from as well
this idea of saving the world being left to the "b heroes" is very "mother 3" - claus is the typical protagonist, being brave, friendly, etc.. he goes out to avenge his mother but is killed along the way by unnatural means, leaving the role of hero to the much more unsuitable lucas
Actually, I really like this theory because Toby originally wanted hometown to be full of humans instead of monsters. It wouldn't surprise me if Toby actually changed that because it was too similar to Earthbound.
Somewhat On topic but as an avid Earthbound and Deltarune fan, In the original 90's Earthbound, Paula is a deeply religious girl who has a strong connection to her faith and its implied a large part of her power comes from it. During the final battle with Giygas and Porky, The fight is won by Paula praying for someone to come and help them defeat their enemies, of which multiple cutscenes play of the characters of the story praying for Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo. We know that there is, whether to a large degree or not, religious overtones in Deltarune, and we know that Noelle is a regular church goer with a strong connection to the angel. I would assume by proxy, Dess could be similar to her sister in this way.
Hey! I'm enjoying the video so far but couldn't help but notice you listed Dess playing the guitar and Ness not playing any instruments as unique attributes when in fact they're more of another similarity. In the official lyrics by Shigesato Itoi to "Smiles and Tears" (the ending theme for EarthBound), sung from the perspective of Ness, he makes note of "his own guitar pick, shiny and clear". His affinity for Rockin' also suggests this as pointed out by another commenter.
I wanna point out that there are also strong connections between Kris and Lucas especially them being the only ones in their respective games that are able to seal dark fountains/pull out dragon needles So the possibility that Dess is a member of a previous generation of lightners that went adventuring into dark worlds but never came back isn't that far fetched
Great video. I noticed that Dess also has similarities to another Mother character, Claus from Mother 3. Their both the older siblings to their timid and blonde younger siblings. Early on in Mother 3, Claus goes missing, and its a big mystery and plot point of the game to find out where he is and what happened to him. The same is with Dess, where she is missing from Deltarune. Saying anything else would be spoilers, but im interested in seeing if their fates end up being similar.
It's actually a clever idea to reference the "Halloween Hack". "Deltarune" is the evolved/finished form of an unnamed game, which might have been called Deltarune if released. Let's call it Protorune to differentiate it from Deltarune. While Deltrarune and "Halloween Hack" are a near decade apart, Protorune would have been planned out between Halloween Hack and Undertale. Meaning there could be more of a Halloween Hack influence on Deltarune than we'd first think due to the time gap depending on how much of Protorune survived into Deltarune. Really, Protorune is an interesting black box as means Deltrarune isn't a strict Undertale sequel. Both Undertale and Deltarune seem like they are different attempts at making Protorune real. Undertale trimming it down to a simpler game and Deltarune attempting to realize Protorune with years of gained experience.
An interesting localization decision for the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG was censoring "Death" as "Des" on several cards. For example, "Death Frog" was censored as "Des Frog". Dess appears to be a nickname that truncates December and is likely spelled that way to make the pronunciation obvious (in contrast to Roulx Kard). But if her nickname is also a reference by Toby to this Yu-Gi-Oh censorship quirk, that would connect Dess to death and be an ominous piece of foreshadowing.
I really like the tone of this one, Jaru! My favorite part is when you finally let the outro music resolve itself, which clearly symbolizes how all the pieces are finally starting to come together.

FINALLY someone is bringing up the similarities between the Halloween Hack and Deltarune. Honestly, while it has aged badly and Toby wants to distance himself from it, I think the main points the Halloween Hack has tried to tell are both ambitious and pretty good, and there are a LOT of parallels between the things happening in it and Deltarune to the point that I and some other people think that Deltarune will be a somewhat retelling of the Halloween Hack. Something else that people have overlooked is the fact that Deltarune was meant to be the first game, the first story Toby wanted to tell on his own after the Halloween Hack. This is important because it not only means that stuff in Undertale should be examined as a possible foreshadowing into Deltarune, but also means that as a story that was meant to come out after the Halloween Hack. Toby has said in many occasions that the idea and plot for Deltarune was something he saw as a dream around 2011-2012 (which is also referenced in the track April 2012, the time that Toby supposedly started working on/planning Deltarune) and wanted to put it out to the world.

I always thought the "Noelle has pills in her dark world room"-part was cut due to the potential it has of being misinterpreted. Like it could be that she's trans but it could also be that she was simply looking up medicine for Rudy that could potentially cure him. But these are just my thoughts on this. Also I'd like to add that the moon in Noelle's room looks like a baseball, furthering the connection Dess has to baseball!
Things in her room are connected to her search history, pills are highly probably to be for her father, also if toby wanted noelle being trans thing, it would be obvious.
@@thecreatura993 no? They didn't say anything about the pills being part of the unused version of that room, or that toby is more obvious with that stuff.
Lil comment on 6:15 Ness' signature move can be whatever name you want it to be, and by Default it's called "PSI Rockin", like a "Rock and Roll Guitar". Not saying he can play a guitar, but he probably really likes music with Rock and Roll Guitars
Sealing dark fountains is pretty similar to gathering the needles in mother 3. There are likely gonna be like 7 of them. They make you stronger when you collect them (just like how your level goes up when you seal dark fountains). I think that when you follow this pattern you see that the final boss takes place at the final fountain. In mother 3 this final boss was your lost brother. Maybe the final boss in deltarune will be a different lost brother.
Add on to comment: After thinking about it there’s so many more connections between mother 3 and deltarune than just this. I feel like people only focus on earthbound for connection’s to deltarune, but I feel you can also find many in mother 3.
I want to add that Toby's inspirations for Deltarune also come from games like SMRPG which have Seven stars, or to dig further on that both of the good Paper Mario games have 7 stars to collect for Mario along with literal numbered chapters mirroring each of them. To strengthen that connection, watch through a level during Valentina's takeover of Nimbus Castle in SMRPG. It's uncanny how similar she is to Queen outside of her obvious objectification in design for SMRPG that isn't present in Deltarune's Queen. Other than that one pretty obvious reason for a retcon, they're very similar in how they operate, especially in Valentina's boss fight where she also has an incompetent bird underling at her service. This is all to say, I kind of think using this line of logic is a little anecdotal. The deepest it goes for me is that Toby probably played these games growing up and they instilled a lot of subconscious ideas into his head, all which he drew from when crafting a very similar genre of RPG. But it is interesting to think about all the coincidences between these games.
Just finished the video, and wow, I did not expect that level of clarity. It would definitely explain… some things, albeit a bit far-fetched. I hope you all have a good day 🐁🐁
6:18 Actually, Ness has two different outfits, his pajamas at the start of the game and his standard outfit. (Three if you count his Magicant appearance in the Japanese version as an outfit)
This is exactly yhe kind of brain rot I like to hear. Every time someone drops a new crack theory that extrapolates a single dialogue box into a massively complex narrative, an angel gets its wings. Subbing.
I actually thought Dess was a human back in Chapter 1 because of how Dess seemed to be a massive reference to Ness, but now that we know she's Noelle's sister that theory is done. But I still agree that she is at least inspired by Ness, but I still had no idea about the connections to Ninten, and after hearing the name of Ninten's mother this can't be a coincidence. And that part at the end with Gaster is peak Jaru. I can't wait for that video where you reveal that Gaster, Sans, Papyrus, and Kris are all the same person.
Ah. Dark worlds are a parallel to or inspired by Magicant and probably work by similar rules. It makes so much sense now. Magicant is absolutely real (you can eat the food there, get killed, live a full and possibly endless life, etc), but it's still a product of one's imagination. It's also a world of dreams. Sounds similar to the Dark Worlds if you ask me. The comparison isn't direct, but I'm starting to put more stock in this idea that DeltaRune is not just inspired by, but borrowing from EarthBound and the Mother series in general.
Hey Jaru, I don't know if you knew this but Ness appears in Toby Fox's other Earthbound hack called Arn's Winter Quest. The hack is set in a winter themed land full of snow. Ness is the only character originally from Earthbound to appear there. There's also a good piece of armor in that hack called Sky Cloak that protects from some elements, I don't remember which tho. This is just some food for thought.
the idea of characters going missing from their worlds and/or suddenly appearing in different worlds in place of those who disappeared, like the guy from Brandish, makes me think about characters like Lancer and Rouxls entering worlds that aren't their own and not being able to survive for long because they "don't belong" there. makes me think about how Kris is written like a sort of "outsider" kid who "doesn't belong" in their hometown. it makes me wonder if being in the light world makes kris safe from turning to stone or some similar issue, or if the light and dark worlds aren't really as different as we think. it makes me wonder if your teased video is going to claim Kris really is a slightly older Frisk who somehow crossed over from Undertale (whether literally "the same" Frisk or an AU or different timeline or w/e). and now i'm wondering if maybe Dess would have wound up the new protag of a different game world too if she hadn't gotten trapped. Maybe she was in the process of traveling from one world to another but was stopped by Gaster.
Yeah i have seen a lot of people mention Noelle might be trans because she got antlers, but do they forget her whole family is based on Christmas? She could be a reindeer and we all know both male and female reindeer got antlers.
i always love jaru's videos, there is so much work and thought put into it and always blows my mind. I had never considered that there's something deeper to noelle having antlers other than character design. Even if it's not canon it's a very well thought theory.
YOU CANT JUST TEASE THE WILDEST THEORY OF ALL TIME AND LEAVE IT 😭😭😭 I literally checked the date on this video to see if it was posted April 1st because of that lol. Looking forward to whenever you have the time to pull that theory out of the bag!
Predictions before the video starts (and random theories I have zero evidence for XD): -Kris has murdered someone else along with Asriel, then he absorbed their souls and was cursed with Eldritch knowledge, leading to his various issues and constantly obscured face. -The reason Noelle is so good at finding glitches, is because of her connection to Dess, who causes the ultimate glitch in reality which lead to her falling into the code of the game. -Susie becomes a huge Dragon near the end of the game, due to character growth and her willing to forsake a normal live, in order to protect those she loves, and to be the ultimate badass. This is foreshadowed by the importance of the "How to Draw Dragons" book. -Kris ends up as a fusion between Asriel and Ralsei, becoming the Goat Monster he always wanted to be, and gains super useful Magic skills, along with his Act skills. This will happen regardless of your choices, but your choices determine the specifics of his appearance and magic. -Des end up creating a false reality where they can live their best lives, but then Noelle either willingly decides to go back to the reality where her father is dead and her mother is abusive, or is dragged back there by Kris and the others That's all I can think of for now XD
That Revelation section feels like when the detective with pics and clues hung up all around the room, and they're feeling frustratedly stumped, until, while staring at one clue, they happen look at all the clues from an angle from which everything lines up, and their eyes go wide with shock: they've done it, how did they not see it before!
As the strongest darkness, Dessgoat, fought the fraud, Gaster, she began to open her dark fountain. Gaster shrunk back in fear. Then Dessgoat says *Stand proud Gaster, you are ness*
I was so 100 percent sure that at the end his big theory build up (ESPECIALLY when he said 'What is sans' and 'including a time machine') was going to end with 'i've realized... sans is ness' i was shocked when i was wrong. utterly flabbergasted
It's not often I catch a Jaru upload this early. The title and thumbnail are very very interesting, and I'm excited to see what you have in store for this video. Keep the quality uploads coming Jaru! ^_^ Edit: oh god Jaru mentioned trans Noelle. I'm almost afraid to check the subreddit's reaction to this
I liked very much this video!!! Is a very good theory. The Gaster theory seems to be very interesting!! We have time until the new chapters release to take your time to make that one xD. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought this was a joke jajajaja
Reindeer of both sexes have horns, not just males. The difference is when they shed them. I support trans Noelle, but hate that this and the pills are used as an argument. She lost her sister, she's not well mentally. Those could be depression pills.
I think that this is definitely a stretch. Like, Deltarune is definitely inspired by the Mother series, but honestly most of these similarities could just be coincidences. Especially considering we don’t know much about Dess, and have to make many assumptions about her character. Besides, Frisk is much more clearly inspired by Ness, being a kid with a striped shirt and doesn’t talk much.
this is a great video cuz it stands on its own as a great piece of analysis even seperated from the jaruverse! btw, mother 3 features a boyish, protective child going missing and being mind controlled by the villian to fight their timid sibling. this could possibly be dess is the knight credence? maybe gaster is controlling her soul just like kris's soul is being controlled, creating a thematic parallel between the protag and antag? who knows!!! xP
Well, after having watched the whole video, I guess the comparison makes sense, there are more similarities than I expected. That being said, it is definitely kind of a stretch to say "this character is inspired by THIS" and then grab three different characters to match different attributes from Dess, especially considering how much of what we know about Dess is simply asumed. But, at the end of the day, as a silly little video it works well.
Yeah this video definitly has its fair share of issues. Plus EarthBound's setting is deliberately tropey/stereotypical (literally called "Eagleland") and that extends to its characters and their traits. A teen who plays baseball, is brave, makes many friends, has a stay-at-home mom and a busy dad that works long hours from home... those aren't the most uncommon traits to have, especially during the '90s in EarthBound takes place, and in media from the time. Same for "girl who wears pink clothes and gets captured" definitely reaching lmao. Also no Claus mention???
I have a theory that jumped in a pool full of crack. So, what if deltarune has 3 different neutral endings. Now I know what you're thinking, what in the world have I been smoking to come up with this, nothing. Anyway, what if as the chapters progress the differences grow in amount till the end were they're completely different giving you 3 different neutral endings, 3 different pacifist endings, 3 different no friends endings, and 3 different genocide endings. Save file 1 could be ending with the Knight. Save file 2 could be ending with the Roaring. Save file 3 could be ending with the Angel. Now the evidence. 1. You have 3 save files and each one is slightly different since Kris and Asriel's bedroom changes slightly. 2. The Steam page may say "only one ending?" and apparently before it was changed "only one ending." but this could be interpreted as "Is there only 1 ending for chapter 2?" and apparently before it was changed "Only 1 ending for chapter 1." 3. If this is true the ending Toby fox saw could be an ending that mentions all of these endings. Like some weird extra Gaster ending. Now the final question. Is this something Toby Fox would do? I have no idea I don't know the guy. But what I do know is that if he where to do this he would complete the game when he's like 80 or something. So this happening is like lower than lowest.
Suprised you never bothered to notice the parallels to Claus in your research The parallels to him are INFINITELY more concrete than to Ninten/Ness/Paula.
Your theories are always so convincing that if you say you've had a revelation, I kinda don't wanna watch the video to not spoil deltarune to myself... But seriously, even if they aren't correct, your theories make so much sense!
The real reason Dess disappeared was because she actually became Sans, by extension of being Ness

6:18 Actually, Ness has two different outfits, his pajamas at the start of the game and his standard outfit. (Three if you count his Magicant appearance in the Japanese version as an outfit)
haven't watched it let but this already feels like a april fools joke on a mundane day
edit: ok he has not gone insane yet
This is exactly yhe kind of brain rot I like to hear. Every time someone drops a new crack theory that extrapolates a single dialogue box into a massively complex narrative, an angel gets its wings. Subbing.
Nice! Welcome aboard! :D
8:09
Fun Fact:
ALL of the towns in MOTHER 1 (JP) are named after holidays (Mother's Day, Halloween, etc.)
Perhaps the true Ness was the friends we made along the way.
Can't believe Mat Pat played as Dess in the fnaf movie
at first i was so incredibly skeptical, but now… i’m hooked! looking forward to the next theory, so excited
Mother 3 not mentioned, huh? But there's so many parallels you can draw with it!
This reminds me of the theory that Deltarune will be a retold of Earthbound Halloween Hack.
The avarage Delatrune fan trying not to connect every theory to Gaster:
Hey Jaru, I don't know if you knew this but Ness appears in Toby Fox's other Earthbound hack called Arn's Winter Quest. The hack is set in a winter themed land full of snow. Ness is the only character originally from Earthbound to appear there. There's also a good piece of armor in that hack called Sky Cloak that protects from some elements, I don't remember which tho. This is just some food for thought.
That’s it, he’s gone insane. I can tell from the title alone. (/j)
This is a narrative theory, and very good. It really gets you thinking about the intertextual elements present in the game.
the idea of characters going missing from their worlds and/or suddenly appearing in different worlds in place of those who disappeared, like the guy from Brandish, makes me think about characters like Lancer and Rouxls entering worlds that aren't their own and not being able to survive for long because they "don't belong" there. makes me think about how Kris is written like a sort of "outsider" kid who "doesn't belong" in their hometown. it makes me wonder if being in the light world makes kris safe from turning to stone or some similar issue, or if the light and dark worlds aren't really as different as we think. it makes me wonder if your teased video is going to claim Kris really is a slightly older Frisk who somehow crossed over from Undertale (whether literally "the same" Frisk or an AU or different timeline or w/e). and now i'm wondering if maybe Dess would have wound up the new protag of a different game world too if she hadn't gotten trapped. Maybe she was in the process of traveling from one world to another but was stopped by Gaster.
im saving this for when i need content to listen to while drawing
favorite type of jaru video is the type where u can’t tell if it’s a shitpost when u click it
Yeah i have seen a lot of people mention Noelle might be trans because she got antlers, but do they forget her whole family is based on Christmas? She could be a reindeer and we all know both male and female reindeer got antlers.
Toby you need to drop Chapter 3/4 this man is going mad (lovingly)
5:31 made me laugh hard for a moment; wanted to tell friends about that, but then I remembered a new law accepted in Russia just several days ago...
Бывает
boy do i love kooky funny and amazing theories from the one and only jaru
i always love jaru's videos, there is so much work and thought put into it and always blows my mind. I had never considered that there's something deeper to noelle having antlers other than character design. Even if it's not canon it's a very well thought theory.
Didn’t Toby Fox say he doesn’t really want people to remember him for Halloween hack? I don’t know if using it as evidence is a very good idea.
God I loved this video so much. You got me smiling and glued to the screen from beggining to end ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ooooh! Hype! Can’t wait for the mega theory! Great job Jaru.
Thanks! 😁
YOU CANT JUST TEASE THE WILDEST THEORY OF ALL TIME AND LEAVE IT 😭😭😭
I literally checked the date on this video to see if it was posted April 1st because of that lol. Looking forward to whenever you have the time to pull that theory out of the bag!
Bro NO WAYYY!! This is another great video of yours, but THAT cliffhanger??? I can't wait oh lord!!! You're absolutely my fav UT/DR youtuber!!
Thank you so much!!
Predictions before the video starts (and random theories I have zero evidence for XD):
-Kris has murdered someone else along with Asriel, then he absorbed their souls and was cursed with Eldritch knowledge, leading to his various issues and constantly obscured face.
-Des end up creating a false reality where they can live their best lives, but then Noelle either willingly decides to go back to the reality where her father is dead and her mother is abusive, or is dragged back there by Kris and the others
That's all I can think of for now XD
Susie also said that she often thinks about becoming "Susiezilla" so that also aligns with her turning into a big monster.
the only way i could imagine susie becoming a dragon would go is if she absorbs a human soul, so I wonder how that would happen
Nooo the cliffhanger-
How on earth did you turn a meme into an actual theory (that’s also really good btw)?!?
With enough sleep deprivation, anything is possible! xD
This gotta be my favourite video of yours yet, the ending actually gave me chills. I'm genuinely excited for what's next.
I'm glad!!
The best part of theorizing is when you finally find that ONE thing that brings everything together, glad you found it lmao
Most sane jaru's theory
the gaster theory is the thing ive been waiting for all this time. knowing that it's closer than ever before is relaxing
That cliffhanger may have made me rage from suspense more than SpiderVerse did.
God, I did not have the right to be so hyped in the last part XD
Looking forward to that theory!
That Revelation section feels like when the detective with pics and clues hung up all around the room, and they're feeling frustratedly stumped, until, while staring at one clue, they happen look at all the clues from an angle from which everything lines up, and their eyes go wide with shock: they've done it, how did they not see it before!
Least unhinged Jaru Theory. love to see it
"dess is ness"
"dess is kris"
Dess is Casey Hartley, and we all know it in our hearts.
(even if Mae is the one with the guitar and bat)
Bro made a game theory move
As the strongest darkness, Dessgoat, fought the fraud, Gaster, she began to open her dark fountain.
Gaster shrunk back in fear. Then Dessgoat says
*Stand proud Gaster,you are ness*
Professor Jaru showing back up with a slideshow and a crackpot, we love to see it.
"But this is all just a theory, a JARU THEORY, thanks for watching"
8:08 This was the part that made me lean forward in my chair and lock in
You have my complete interest now
Nice!
I was so 100 percent sure that at the end his big theory build up (ESPECIALLY when he said 'What is sans' and 'including a time machine') was going to end with 'i've realized... sans is ness' i was shocked when i was wrong. utterly flabbergasted
HE'S NESS, SHE'S NESS, YOU'RE NESS, I'M NESS, ARE THERE ANY NESS' I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
meow
It's not often I catch a Jaru upload this early. The title and thumbnail are very very interesting, and I'm excited to see what you have in store for this video. Keep the quality uploads coming Jaru! ^_^
Edit: oh god Jaru mentioned trans Noelle. I'm almost afraid to check the subreddit's reaction to this
Hope you enjoy it! And thank you! x)
I always randomly catch them between 3 minutes and 25 minutes
Amazing video as always Jaru
Glad you think so!
I liked very much this video!!! Is a very good theory. The Gaster theory seems to be very interesting!! We have time until the new chapters release to take your time to make that one xD. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought this was a joke jajajaja
Glad you enjoyed it! xD
dess nuts
Reindeer of both sexes have horns, not just males. The difference is when they shed them. I support trans Noelle, but hate that this and the pills are used as an argument. She lost her sister, she's not well mentally. Those could be depression pills.
Jaru has officially become a DELTARUNE Secret BOSS
I think that this is definitely a stretch. Like, Deltarune is definitely inspired by the Mother series, but honestly most of these similarities could just be coincidences. Especially considering we don’t know much about Dess, and have to make many assumptions about her character.
Besides, Frisk is much more clearly inspired by Ness, being a kid with a striped shirt and doesn’t talk much.
Mixed feelings on this video but very excited for the Gaster Multiverse theory ❤️
this is a great video cuz it stands on its own as a great piece of analysis even seperated from the jaruverse! btw, mother 3 features a boyish, protective child going missing and being mind controlled by the villian to fight their timid sibling. this could possibly be dess is the knight credence? maybe gaster is controlling her soul just like kris's soul is being controlled, creating a thematic parallel between the protag and antag? who knows!!! xP
Thank you! And good point!
bro taking forever to talk youtube needs 3x
Oh god I've realized...
Ness Dess nuts.
Sorry couldn't get this joke to just flew by.
Your speed has gotten alot better!! Great vid Jaru!
another incredible video jaru!!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
6:16 very loose connection, but the default name for Ness’s nameable psi move is PK Rockin and guitar is basically the default “rock” instrument
I actually really like this idea! Dess being a Ness homage would be a really cool reference!
I was under the assumption that everyone was in agreement that The Holidays where reindeer.
Which female reindeer can have antlers.
“Which female reindeer can have antlers”? All of them.
Have you thought about analysing the Brandish games? There is much inspiration taken then a lot of people realize!
2. The Steam page may say "only one ending?" and apparently before it was changed "only one ending." but this could be interpreted as "Is there only 1 ending for chapter 2?" and apparently before it was changed "Only 1 ending for chapter 1."
Suprised you never bothered to notice the parallels to Claus in your research
The parallels to him are INFINITELY more concrete than to Ninten/Ness/Paula.
Your theories are always so convincing that if you say you've had a revelation, I kinda don't wanna watch the video to not spoil deltarune to myself... But seriously, even if they aren't correct, your theories make so much sense!
Thank you!
