Lincoln Riley's Strategy Failed the USC Trojans Against Michigan

  • USC football coach Lincoln Riley and his offensive play-calling blew the game for the Trojans at Michigan Saturday. USC had an advantageous passing attack and he spent the first half running the ball into the teeth of the Michigan defense. The Wolverines defensive tackles Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham are the best in college football and both will be first round draft picks in the 2025 NFL draft. Running straight at them in the first half when USC had so many weapons at wide receiver made no sense!

As a Michigan fan this is a horrendous take. They outplayed Michigan in the second half, in fact they didnt give up on the run game and started moving the ball running as well as passing. Did you forget the 65-yard run USC had that came up a few yards short of the end zone?
USC is playing in the Big 10 now, they have to mix in the run with the pass.

Too much results oriented post game analysis. Tough game for both and Lincoln made adjustments based on how he felt with the texture of the game.
Danger of hindsight being 20/20, if Grant secures the ball, Michigan likely wins by two scores
If Humphrey just hip drops, risks a penalty instead of spider monkey piggybacking Mullings USC wins.
      Could have, should have.

After watching the game, less concerned about Michigan's offense.
More with their defense. I'm concerned about their secondary, they get lost or too slow to react to make a play. Can't be allowing touchdowns with double coverage. Missed assignments or busted coverages.
Teams capable of running when Graham and Grant takes a breather. Pass rush not nearly as effective when both are off. Depth is an issue.
Blitzing seems to expose their secondary weaknesses more without getting enough of a pass rush advantage.
At least Wink did a better job of play calling.

Michigan is very respected and tbh this was put in our lost column last season. It was only recently we were slightly favored over Michigan. We literally improved so much in many areas and are still rebuilding. We only just got a defense.

Considering all the departures from last year's Michigan team, the defense had the fewest changes. It might not be the same Michigan team, but it is a lot of the same defense. The same defense that beat a Nick Saban Alabama and a Undefeated Washington Huskies.

Buckeye Fan answer: Ryan Day has many faults as a head coach. He should absolutely be getting Sayin as much playing time as possible to prepare him for next year. Devin Brown is at best a lower tier QB in college football. He is a good kid and a good teammate by all accounts. However, he has no business ever taking a snap at Ohio State. Say what you want, but Riley's half-time adjustments were very effective, along with the defensive staff's adjustments. The Mich DL is the best in the country but you still have to challenge them and go at them at times, so I understand the reasoning there. But yeah, they started off too slow and dug themselves a hole.

I don’t really like the narrative that “USC should’ve won the game”. Everyone is pointing out, oh if USC did this they would’ve won (which might be true) but the exact same thing could be said for Michigan. Michigan essentially gifted USC 21 free points. 2 of their touchdowns came from broken coverages and the other came from a bad fumble by Michigan. If Michigan played sound, that game is a blowout.
I still love this show and the host and I find a lot of the comments in here unnecessary and some are just mean. I just don’t agree with your take, a take btw that basically everyone else has been saying too! Keep up the good work my man.

You nailed this: Michigan fans think they invented the wheel. USC plays ND every year. Notre Dame has won 2 of the last 3 games against Michigan. You played them, they are physical. You didn't show USC anything new. Coach Harbaugh coached in the Pac 12 at Stanford for several season, they were physical then. His teams were similar to this Michigan team. You won a close game at home, that's it. You didn't invent the game. USC beat Penn State in their last meeting. The Big 12, SEC and Big 10 run the ball we get it. Point is Riley screwed this up by not running his offense. Losing WR Lemon and and TE Lake Mcree hurt, both have some of the better hands of the WR group. USC OL is subpar. Moss has nearly thrown a pick 6 in every game he's played in, the exact same way. He's been lucky up until now
He can be lazy with that short sideline pass. Johnson made the play. Don "Wink" Martindale called a brilliant game.

Here is why USC lost. Lincoln Riley had two weeks to prepare offensively for B1G football and Michigan. His offense lacks creativity in his run game. He has no blocking scheme as a unit in his playbook. His offense has no identity. What has he done well at SC on offense in three years? Not what plays his recruits make to save him. We know what Michigan has done well over decades no matter the coach if you follow college football. In the B1G you have to run the ball. The genius offensive guru has been boring in his ways of blocking schemes and play design. Find as many creative ways as possible in your run game to keep that clock winding away. THATS B1G FOOTBALL. Run at the DEs and make the CBs come up in run support. Mix the pass in with a lot of play action. BUT FIGURE OUT HOW TO RUN THE BALL AWAY FROM THE IMMEDIATE STRENGTH IN THE MIDDLE. The game is not complicated!
