    I learned from reading of people messing up on bikes like my BMW GS 1200 touching the screw that sets butterfly closed position that has epoxy sealant on it from the factory and won't start up after screwing with it. Appears there are stepper motors, ( I call servo's) that get a Ma signal from the ECM and adjusts the butterflies based on temperature of engine, and outside temperature to allow bike to start. Don't want to screw with some screws.

    Oh yeah...! More reason why calibrating your calibration is a must! My buddy mechanic even said that you won't even need a specific vacuum value to follow; if every carb is balanced, and you re-adjusted the idle and they didn't change, you're good. Eyeing the sync won't work either. Make sure the sync is same at different rpm ranges as well. If it is a parallel twin, you might get it right though with just feeling the vibrations.

    I recommend the Motion Pro Sync Pro. It works really well and accommodates a lot of different engine sizes.
    This video was on a 600 suzuki bandit but I can attest to a bandit 1200 being identical to this process.
    Oh and for the love of God if you ever call places to see if they can sync your carbs make sure they use a fluid/pressure gauge tool. Anyone who does it by ear is joke.

    Great video. Some things I've noted from doing multi-carb bikes, is that (in my experience) sync problems seem to mostly occur from inconsistencies from one cylinder to another, or tampering. So when someone brings me a bike that has sync problems, but the settings are unmolested, we immediately run a compression test and check engine health. I don't know if it's "proper", but I do like to use the shanks from two #80 drill bits to mechanically sync a carb set (especially if they've been molested), then run the bike with the gauges. One shank carefully goes in the "reference" carb between the body and butterfly (centered at the bottom of course) (adjust the idle screw to barely hold the shank), and we use the second shank to set the others one at a time. A good motor is usually pretty close in regards to sync once they are "mechanically" set. Of course that may not be a "proper" thing to do, but it's saved me a lot of sync time.

    And just another message. Yesterday I managed to sync the 4 carbs on my 1000RX perfectly. Learnt so much from the video it was easy. The day before I had had the same problem with the idle cable hanging and I hadn't calibrated the 4 gauges before starting. I didn't know you had to. I just took the ramp off and having seen this video (at 1 min in there is a great pic showing the butterfly in position) I visually balanced all the butterflies - one pair at a time and then both pairs together on the bench and put the rack back on. After adjusting the idle which was now too low the carbs were already so much closer at was so easy to get them bang on. Just a small tweak. Made me feel good and carb syncronisation is no longer a mystery to me.

    Brilliant video. I have a 98 gsx750f that I acquired having been off the road a few years. Had it running but obviously needed attention. Long story short, had a seized pilot screw and ended up replacing carb number 4 (for anyone reading, mk2 1200 bandit carbs are identical 36mm mikuni cv carbs to the gsx750f and have the throttle position sensor). Noticed the o rings on the middle fuel rail between the carbs were shot so I've pulled them all apart. Now the reassembly... Having a hard time reconnecting the throttle plate adjusters back together without firing the springs across the shop. Any tips would be greatly received.

    Oh man this was a helpful video. Waay better than some videos where they basically jus skip some steps n don't explain anything. I am having problems syncing my bandit 1200s cause the dials on 1&2 are so far apart from 3&4. And no matter how much I turn the middle screw I get very little movement to sync all for....But this vid jus gave me some clues, gonna go try fiddle with it more....

      If you have an air screw, that will be at the rear of the carburettor, also need to adjust the front fuel mixture screw to match the air/fuel ratio .
      Firstly ,never screw in tight as may damage the fine tip. Start with turn back 1-1.5 turns as this lowers the position of the tip in the fuel bowl and allows more fuel to enter. You can fine tune by riding and removing it all again. That's why EFI is so much better.. ......

    Yesterday I did carburetor synchronization. I synchronized 3 of them without any problems. But when trying to balance the fourth where there is a big difference. The idle speed of the engine increases too much. I can't reduce it by adjusting the idle screw because it has run out of range. The TPS sensor is set correctly. What could be the reason for this? Maybe the carburetor needs to be adjusted? Air-fuel mixture?

      @@cheesybread9827 All four gauges need to align together, I think it doesn't matter at which number they are because they somewhat fluctuate. "Harmonizing" the needles to be in sync with each other is the goal, I fiddled with the screws abit.
      So I kinda solved mine, though they don't line up perfectly, I'm OK with it. I'm putting the bike together, I think I'll upload a video & give a review of it rides when I'm done.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  Рік тому +1

      Not sure why this one slipped by but most gauges have an adjusting screw that you can "tune" both gauges to one cylinder. Good side is you don't have to do math or record the off one. Donwnside is neither gauge is truly known to be the actual vacuum. For Example: Let's say you're adjusting to a service manual spec calling for "20" That being said, our main goal is getting them equal as it's hard to match the specs given on used motorcycles as engine wear will alter engine vacuum.

    What about using a single, high quality, gauge and just moving it across each port? Yeah I know, it's quite a lot more work and fiddling around, but it entirely eliminates the issue of mismatched gauges.

    • @davidjayne148
      @davidjayne148 3 роки тому

      The problem with that is that adjusting one affects all the others because idle speed changes. You COULD in theory monitor RPM with a serious electronic tach and fiddle with idle speed..... Back and forth and back and forth.... Or use 4 gauges. Much easier.

      On my bike, loss of smooth acceleration. Not huge, but when you ride a bike for while you notice subtle things. The next really obvious thing is back firing after chopping the throttle. Say passing a car, cutting back in and dropping the throttle. I make it a habit to check every spring. Takes about 15 min once you know how to do on your bike.

    • @martinhauk1852
      @martinhauk1852 2 роки тому

      The only Japanese bikes that had a master carb were the 1977 and 1978 Honda fours with slide needle carbs. The master carb on those was #2 as it didn't have any sync adjustment while the #1, #3 and #4 did. All the carbs were synchronized to #2. Constant velocity carb sets don't have a master carb. They have 3 adjusters. One between #1 and #2. Another between #3 and #4. And one in the middle between #2 and #3. When you adjust the one between #1 and #2 you are adjusting #1 and #2 simultaneously against each other, bringing them closer together of farther apart. It's the same with #3 and #4. After you have done the two pairs you go to the adjuster between #2 and #3 to adjust the two pairs against each other.

    • @martinhauk1852
      @martinhauk1852 2 роки тому

      Unless you are going for a full racing application I find a well calibrated set of gauges to be more than adequate. The factory sync specs are usually pretty loose, and the gauges will dial them in much closer than factory spec. The carb sticks are great for squeezing out that last 1/100th horsepower.

Let the engine warm up then once giving it short bips it ran fine and smooth with the choke off but it wouldnt rev over 8k? It was like a car when it goes into limp mode or safety mode! Any idea what could be the cause of this? It should rev to 12-14k even in neutral on the stands correct?

    DO NOT USE THIS VIDEO AS A GUIDE FOR SYNCING THROTTLE BODIES!!! YOU DO NOT USE THE BUTTERFLY SCREWS TO ADJUST TBs ON MANY FI BIKES - YOU USE THE AIR SCREWS AND SCREWING UP THE BUTTERFLY SYNC IS GOING TO MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DIAL THE TBs BACK IN>

      @How2Wrench  5 років тому +1

      As with many of the videos here, we are demonstrating on a particular model. This model is carbureted. The main focus of the video is the correct tool usage and it is always best to know and understand the correct screw or procedure for your model your working on. Some models of EFI (throttle body) require the use of the OEM diagnostic tool to turn off or lock the IAC valve for example. Thanks for adding your comment and thoughts...H2W

      Hey Guys....We paid close attention to that as well. The carb sync calmed it but still did not cure it. Our plan is to switch it between cylinders and see. It did not have a "sloppy" feel. The student want to dyno the bike first for a before and after his work.

    Mercury gauges don't lie, you just have to be careful not to close the throttle to fast at high rpms or you'll suck the mercury through your engine.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  4 роки тому +1

      Actually, they can. We cover why in another video but in short its mostly a "storage issue of laying them on their side. Parts of the Mercury separates and each tube doesn't have the same amount. Regardless you can test each tube as shown in this video to prove correct or if a variance is needed when reading.
