"Dust in the Wind" by Kansas lyrics:
    I close my eyes
Only for a moment, and the moment's gone
    All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
    Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind
    Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
    All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
    Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
    Now don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
    It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
    Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
(All we are is dust in the wind)
    Dust in the wind
(Everything is dust in the wind)
Everything is dust in the wind
    (In the wind)

Icarus, in Greek mythology, flew too close to the sun. His wings melted and he dropped back to earth. Kerry Livgren had a philosophical bent. He thought deeply about life and eventually came to the ultimate conclusion that any achievement is temporary. He wrote both this song and Dust in the Wind. It's wonderful to me that, rather than let his thinking lead to despair, he let it lead him to Christianity.

Then, "Sparks of the Tempest". I swear, that song from over 40 years ago was prophetic and applies to the world today! For your info, here are the lyrics to the song:
The sparks of the tempest rage a hundred years on
The voice of the dreamer screams, the cause of the pawn
The King and the Queen are gone, each piece is the same
The difference between us is a part of the game
Darkness is spreading like a spot on the sun
The dead are the living in the age of the gun
While everyone clamors for the justice they seek
The world is corrupted and the strong take the weak
They mold you and shape you, they watch what you do
The sparks of the tempest are burnin' you through
Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain
Though they may promise, they only bring pain
The future is managed, and your freedom's a joke
You don't know the difference as you put on the yoke
The less that you know the more you fall into place
A cog in the wheel, there is no soul in your face
Run for the cover, Millennium's here
Bearing the standard of confusion and fear
Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain
Though they may promise, they only bring pain
Blood in the sand, a cry in the street
Now the cycle is nearly complete
Ten thousand years, and nothing was learned
No turning back, now the wheel has turned
Big Brother is watching and he likes what he sees
A world for the taking, when he's ready to squeeze
The King and the Queen are gone, each piece is the same
The difference between us is a part of the game
Soothsayer saying now tell me no lies
What is this madness that is filling the skies
Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain

Absolutely everything is perfect about this song. The lyrics. The vocal melody and harmonies. The instrumentation and arrangement. The technical mastery. The absolutely tight pocket of that rhythm section. The tone. The recording of the instruments. The mixing. The stereo separation. Effects. Not a note out of place. On top of that, crazy emotional impact and feeling. Perfect.

In my opinion it's of the greatest songs ever. The mixing is so good, a lot of times organs and keyboards get drowned out by the guitars, but here the vocals and instruments all shine together and it gives it that extra impact. Plus that organ solo is great as well.

It's one of the quintessential rock tunes of all time, but what sets it apart from most is that, where most songs have only one hook that drives the tune, this song is literally hook after hook after hook; each taking you further along the journey. • @maggieanne5340

Hi Jamel! Carry on Wayward Son back story...
"This was written by Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren. According to Livgren, the song was not written to express anything specifically religious, though it certainly expresses spiritual searching and other ideas.
Livgren became an evangelical Christian in 1980, and has said that his songwriting to that point was all about "searching." Regarding this song, he explained: "I felt a profound urge to 'Carry On' and continue the search. I saw myself as the 'Wayward Son,' alienated from the ultimate reality, and yet striving to know it or him. The positive note at the end ('surely heaven waits for you') seemed strange and premature, but I felt impelled to include it in the lyrics. It proved to be prophetic."
This song can be seen as the continuation of the last song of Kansas' previous album Masque. As stated in the last verse of "The Pinnacle":
I stood where no man goes
    Above the din I rose
Life is amusing though we are losing
    Drowned in tears of awe
By definition in the Cambridge dictionary, "din" is a loud, unpleasant, confused noise which lasts for a long time. The first line of "Carry On Wayward Son" is: "Once I rose above the noise and confusion." >>
This was the group's first major hit, and like their next one, "Dust In The Wind," it was a last minute addition to the album. Kerry Livgren wrote the song just two days before they started recording Leftoverture. At that point, the band was polishing the songs they had, not bringing in new ones. "I've got one more song that you might want to hear," he told the band, and when he played "Carry On," they knew it was a hit and made it the lead track on the album.
The a cappella vocals in the beginning of this song gave it a very distinctive intro. This worked well on rock radio stations where disc jockeys rarely talked over the music.
This song has appeared in several movies, including Heroes (1977), Happy Gilmore (1996) and Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)."

This is a PERFECT STORM song! Magnum Opus! It has EVERYTHING! Everyone firing on ALL CYLINDERS!
This song reminds me of my late brother. "Carry on, my Wayward Son, there'll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest. Don't Cha cry no more!"

It was actually in a movie from either 1976 or 1977 called Heroes with Henry Winkler. Also, in the single version, the organ part isn't in it. They cut that out and went straight to the guitar solo. Of course tape editing with a razor blade and splicing tape was a real art back in the day.

You have probably heard "Dust in the Wind" and "Point of Know Return"... one of my faves is "The Spider" which runs into "Portrait (He Knew)" from the album Point of Know Return...be sure and check those out. Interesting story on this song...they almost had the album finished but needed one more song...Kerry Livgren went home and wrote this whole song in one night...ended up being their biggest hit before Dust in the Wind.
