- Danny Elfman's body of work is vast, genius, and all a bit mad -- much like the man himself. On this special Halloween edition of The Story Behind the Song, Mr. Jack Skellington himself discusses Oingo Boingo's spooky season classic "Dead Man's Party," as well as his work with Tim Burton and the track "Sorry" off his latest solo LP, Big Mess.

Danny, don't be surprised that people love your work. You're a genius, dude.
I freaking LOVED this album. I still do, all these years later. Just amazing musical work. Thank you, Mr. Elfman.
Wait? You got Danny Elfman on your show? WHAT THE EFF? Dude's a musical genius.
From my perspective the lyric "chauffer coming to my door, says there room for maybe just one more" references the ferryman, Charon coming to take your soul across the river Styx and that he always has room for another soul. That leads to "shiny silver dollar on either eye" which is what you need to pay Charon for his service. All of that goes back to, of course, ancient Greek myths about dying and going to the underworld to meet Hades and Persephone.
i always thought the chauffeur was the guy driving the hearse
Its a common motiff, one classic version of the 'Room for one more' story was told by Lord Dufferin. There's also a traditional 'death coach' story from where I'm from in the North East of Scotland that uses the phrase in that way also :)
love this! Danny my biggest musical inspiration. love hearing him talk about processes like this
That song just sounds inevitable. Like it's always been there and he just found it.
So absolutely insane that I woke up this morning wishing that I could interview Danny and ask him about the lyrics to this song.
Mr. Elfman, you say you didn't know what you were, that the sounds you creeated were the things that appealed to you. You encapsulated our entire generation, we still don't feel like we belong to just one thing. And your music still appeals to us because of that.
Danny is ha always had a sort of "Whimsy-Goth" asthedic long before the term"Goth" was even a thing. Back in the 80's Oingo Boingo was only playedon collage radio which me made bootleg /diy mix tapes of and passed them around and the rare occasion we had money to buy records in Atlanta it was Wax N Facts in Little Five Points! I have a special place in my heart for Danny Elfman and Oingo Boingo!
i’ve been in love with the dead man’s party album for a while now. it’s great to hear about the creation of it
I grew up going to Oingo Boingo Halloween parties , they were the best!
The live video they show , its one of the best live performances ever.
i am always listening to oingo bongo
Love Danny. What a musical hero.
Danny has a great vocals...a real showman...thats what rock n roll is all about...
Such an incredible guy. Love him so much. I'd heard the story about Lola asking about the drum machine before but I don't remember where.
He's almost 70 and his hair is still so red!
His armpit hair is still red too. That’s how you know he’s not dyeing it. Unless he dyes his armpit hair as well. But gingers generally take longer to go grey especially if they take care of themselves as he does.
Great beat, funk sound with the horns in the rock&rolla, and the lyrics. He talks about two of those. No surprise it’s a classic!
Irvine Meadows was the site of O.B's annual Deadman's Party Halloween concerts. Over the course of those seven years, I was luck enough to get tickets a couple times and loved every minute of 'em! Crazy energy, great vibes, and fantastic performances 🎉💀💥💫🤘
Only A Lad album was my first Oingo exposure, love at first hearing. Then came E Scissorhands. Dovetailed right to my feelings as an introverted odd child off in the shadows. Influenced my songs, Small, Live animals for breakfast and Nasty Moms from Outer Space
Great interview! 😊👍
This made me happy
I love this song.
I just listened to that song yesterday
Mr Elfman is a genius!!! He should also be in R&R H.O.F. I'm also into skulls and Skelton I seen oingo boingo in Long Beach arena I was high as a kite 80s child but they sounded unbelievable. Rated G version of Slipknott with so many members
What a genius
Danny is so versatile & multi-talented, that it truly is 'yikes' !!!😂🤩 &, if you ever go lookin' for a 'dead man,' you'll probably hear this song in the Malibu foothills...😂🤩 (me, via Haslett, MI, to Topanga, too !!!)😂 THIS, IS ONE FAB, NONE LIKE IT, DANCING, SWINGIN' TUNE... &, i Never tired of it... :) 💫✨💜 THANKS !🙏 (Oh, & i watched '9,' like twice, in a row, & it's amazingly adorable... big wow... :)😵💫😊😁
Avenged sevenfold definitely got "dancing dead" from oingo boingo. Both great songs, plus Danny working with them even puts the cherry on top
Avenged sevenfold are who got me to look into oingo boingo. Syn was always referencing them when he and the rev had their band pinkly smooth. He said they were inspired a lot by oingo and mr bungle. I looked them up on UA-cam and came across private life and the rest is history. I listen to oingo boingo almost everyday and have 15-20 songs on my playlist
OUTSTANDING ❤
Danny Elfman is being interviewed by David S. Pumkins.
Any questions?!
@@Nightrun007 Aieee pappi!
@@stevepd1 Haha, too funny! Gotta love the beat boy skeletons!
@@Nightrun007 You're cool.
Genius.
I was working as a studio musician in Stockholm and had started to get tired of backing up unmotivated artists - this low energy bored me to death. Went to LA on vacation, got to hear two bands - The Blasters and Oingo Boingo - and got my energy back.
Danny elfman, I saw you at bumper shoots in the early 1980s Seattle Washington❤❤ seattlerockrrgrrrl
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks!!
This is my funeral song. No lie.
Danny Elfman was the Frank Zappa of the 80’s who was able to write music that (unlike Frank) was enjoyed by both those into the “bizarre” and those into the familiar.
After being into OB during their “Only A Lad” “On the Outside” “Private Life” “Little Girls” etc period, “Dead Man’s Party” was kinda lame to me.
Praise BoB!
From a friend of the Church of the Sub Genius
I thought the album was from 1985, not 1986.
And you'd be correct. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it...and why Danny doesn't correct the interviewer is kinda odd.
Maybe the interviewer is thinking of the movie Back to School we’re it’s on the soundtrack.
I have a ghost cat ... 😢
Would love to see him on JRE
Wow. He used to be so cute.
Love his music. Weird plastic surgery though
That's how I write music too. Danny is my idol & completely shaped my singing voice from birth.
dude same
outside of I've been composing all my damn life somehow this style popped into me
Danny Elfman disavows Oingo Boingo like Bill Nelson disavows Be-BopDeluxe. Not how proper pop stars are supposed to act!
Thank you Danny!!!!!!!!!!
Danny Is the greatest musician ever!!!
