      Tiesto Vidal and you think that would not happen before zippo are known for being super leaky as you would know if you did work with brass that tiny crack is just the same as the gap between the insert and the case even with the lid closed but some one who has never even touched a drill press let alone used one

      @@thatonedodge I have used a drill press and a welder and more. and brass is leaky but that's why they have things you can buy to put a plastic casing instead of a fabric pad from the factory and you can also put a peace of plastic from a bike tube or more to make it last longer

    You could have just made a slip-fit brass sleeve with a tang or hole to thread the para cord. There were many other odd techniques, so are some tips (for everyone) from a retired millwright: 1. If you're going to peen over the brass casing tube in the body of the lighter, use the rounded head on the ball peen hammer. That is what it was designed for. 2. Before you center punch, pull the guts out and support the case from the inside with a piece of wood or metal. 3. Put the case in a drill press vise before you drill. If you don't have a vise, clamp two pieces of wood on the drill press table and sandwich the lighter case between them. 4. Remove the felt pad and cotton wadding then reinstall the guts before drilling. You'll keep the original factory capacity for absorbency. 5. Once you drill the lighter body and install the tube, solder the interface or use silicone inside to seal off that portion. 6. What's with the micrometer when you have the dimension you need by using the casing? The casing becomes your diameter gauge. Just match it up with the closest drill bit, pull the bit out of the drill index - then use the casing to see if it fits in the index hole. When the casing fits in the proper hole, you have the correct size drill bit. 7. Drill press speed is too fast for punching through metal. Use the lowest speed. 8. Next time you hammer hot metal on an anvil, wear eye protection and have gloves on. Red hot slag does some interesting things to the cornea of your eyeball.

    I like your concept. Zippo lighters evap too fast on their own with out drilling through the case. Soldering the two together (both brass, flux would’ve drawn the solder easily to create a nice seal) would resolve the additional leakage from the joints. The pressure between the two may seem pretty solid from peening but are not reliable for a good seal. I like it though and sorry if I come off differently.

As far as leaking is concerned, you might be able to solder a seal on the brass tubing to the outside of the case. Totally going to try something like this with a spare zip I got floating around. its gonna rust now that u have sanded the coating off, nice job, i woukd wax that up or keep it oiled, maybe even spray a clear coat, also, i would solder the brass that you used to plug the hole or else fluid will leak, i like what u did, but you ruined a perfectly good lighter

    • @flashgordon6238
      @flashgordon6238 6 років тому +1

      @ Octavian: Zippos are made from brass that is nickel plated then chrome plated. The inner portion is made from stainless steel. The exposed brass case will not rust, just oxidize. But I agree with you on soldering the tube to the case to prevent leaks.

    • @clarkstrang

      I roughed it up so that the brass would be exposed and it would tarnish, and I just liked the way the nuts looked.

      @@clarkstrang You should have bought some brass nuts...they would tarnish along with the lighter and shells without rusting. I'm actually tempted to try this, or something similar.

    First off, good job of making something your own! and the unique look is cool. I'd like to thank you for doing it to a fresh off the press Zippo and not an actual vintage one. While there were safety concerns such as gloves and whatnot and you could still improve on the work by soldering and sealing some things to try and lessen the amount of leakage/evaporation(because face it people, we may love them but nothing is perfect), how has it held up for the last 7 months or so. That is if it is an EDC and not just a wall hanger.

    • @clarkstrang
      @clarkstrang  5 років тому +1

      so i have been EDCing an almost identical zippo for the past 4 years, as well as countless regular zippos i keep in my car, shop, house, ect. and i have never seen a difference in fuel evaporation between the regular ones and the ones i customize. as for soldering the tube, i see that as unnecessary because penning over he tube is already a far better fit then the zippo case and insert

    • @korgan7779
      @korgan7779 5 років тому +1

      Yeah I carry one and have several as well, never smoked but thats not the point right.. I certainly understand that most of the loss is simply through the overall lack of being sealed due to pressure fit parts. I'm in the process of testing a gasket at the end over the fuel area to reduce it now. seems to work but only marginally. again, regardless nice work!
