Update 2: it seems the new 30mm lens from Fujifilm (that is sold as a kit lens with X-T5) doesn't know EYE-AF TO WELL, I did a new test with multiple lenses and I'll post my updated video with the new firmware. Short story it will work as 2.0 eye AF but faster in AF-S.
Update 1: I have here pictures with ISO 10000+ with firmware 2.0 on x-t5 ua-cam.com/video/4iZjwXMoUHo/v-deo.html
And the results were very good in extreme low light - no problems like this time.
INITIAL: Before commenting regarding the ISO. Yes, I was wrong. I must shoot in bright sunny days at f1.4 because no camera in the world can focus with eye-af at ISO 6400... SLOW MOVING SUBJECTS... EVER. (just my Sony and a few other cameras 😅).
They just on another level , if setting wrong and bla bla" why the shirts so sharp the face or eye not sharp, just keep real fuji af no1 for miss focus in market right now,
Tudor, I did a similar test, the ratio was inferior on XH2 using a 30mm 2.8 lens. Then I got a 27 1.2 lens and the older 35mm 1.4 lens in both cases, my ratio was 100% in focus. NAILED! What is my conclusion? The EV the camera was achieved in poor light conditions. That's my opinion about that and this has nothing to do with the new firmware.
@@Carlos-mw5rw I also made this test after the video and got consistent poor results with the 30mm - the problem is the lens it seems and when it is low light the results are terrible with the 30mm. I will post my updates and findings.
Random AF point other than your desired focus point is a Fuji feature, a feature where they excel best and will never be topped by any other camera manufacturer.
I seem to be on the opposite side. My X-T5 had the behaviour you're showing. I had one event with awesome pictures. When I got home I got shocked. More than 50% of the photographs were not in focus! With firmware 4.0 it is locking a lot better. In fact, I would say it is slower to show confirmation but then it is more reliable. I still need to do more testing but many things are better. I was also having a lot more issues before with stabilization for ex. not working when on "shooting mode", now it works!
Everybody stated the problem was with eye autofocus. I was having problems without it selected also. I can still replicate the autofocus drift but it is much improved, very much. Is it all corrected? Of course not. This is the way since the X-T1. When the X-T2 showed... the same. Better camera but still left a lot to desire concerning focus. Then X-T3... everyone saying, much faster, bla bla bla.... and all was the same. X-T4.. now we have it! and boom, exposure shifting autofocus like Panasonic DFD... We seem to be left with the promise things will get better with firmware...
I really like the system and colors. But I also use other brands. This is 2024.
They will announce the X-T6 or X-H3S once again... Sony like autofocus!! I keep dreaming.
Yes you are using very high ISO (for the system) and it makes it a little difficult. But I have to agree. My old Sony A7III was free of these stresses. Did it fail to acquire focus? YES.. but it was very rare. Canon very similar. No difficult settings. You buy the camera, set eye tracking or not and that is 90% set.
We need channels like yours to be pushing companies and exposing these faults. We are dealing with expensive toys that are sold because of false advertising.

Hi Tudor, to be fair, a good test outdoors in lower ISO may be nice. However, the problem is still there. I shoot events, street and wildlife. I have not had many problems using my X-H2S during events but what I am seeing in addition to random missed focus are poor IQ in higher ISO. I'm going to sell my X-H2S and some lenses, keep my XT30II and smaller lenses for street only...maybe. I might sell it all. I'm becoming enamored with my Zf and thinking of returning to Nikon with the Z6iii. I hope I don't regret it.

I do event work with the XH2S, I do notice eye AF struggle at very high ISO's like what you demonstrated here. I do not have any experience with other systems eye AF reliability, but I would just like to interject that the outcomes vary massively based on ISO from my own working experience (and most videos out there discussing eye AF tend to not have 8000-10000 ISO shots as a default discussion point).
Interesting, I will test at different iso values. It's the first time when I hear this. And none of my other systems showed any problem in eye af depending on the iso value. So I will look into it...
Not disagreeing with the conclusions, but checking how the autofocus works on ISO 6400 and up is not a great idea.
Yeah, as i just posted - his test is worth exactly nothing, if he doesn’t allow the camera ANY auto parameter to adjust exposure - then it’s user error, not technical camera

@@Tudor_Mateescu I don’t know about your setup, but why would you use a macro- not known for anything but legendarily slow autofocus- for anything moving??? As i just posted - not a single issue here on x-h2s, newest firmware, released at the same time, and with similar descriptions as the 4.00 for x-t5

@@Tudor_Mateescu for the record - I don’t give a flying s*** about your reviews in general, but… some people not knowing about how to operate cameras trust your, and other reviewers/gear-focused peoples opinions on YT- for many of these channels - the reviewers do not have actual working experience for any fair length of time with the gear! Don’t be one of these people, please!
XT-5 in AFC and bird mode. Over 600 shots in AFC, maybe couple are in focus, despite the fact, that during shooting green squares were indicating correct positions of focus on eyes. Even on still standing birds. At the same time, AFS works fine, as expected. Actually I was very supersized, because during shooting it looked as it nailed (because of green squares).
Exactly my experience as well with birds and afc on the xt-5 with the latest, and previous, firmware.

my voigtlander 35mm 0.9 bug is still the same still showing f22 in exif data. Very dissapointed

With my Voigtländer 27mm it still shows F22, when I turn the ring once it shows F2 for maybe 1 or to shots and than shows F22 again 😅 it’s not only in the exif data, the camera screen also shows F22

For moving objects you have to be at SS 1/500 above
Thanks for the video. If you think that the AF of the X-T5 sucks, then please check it for the GFX 100S. Disaster. Not reliable. Out of 20 photos you get zero in focus. The camera can focus on the nose eye lashes eye brows but not the eye.
so sad... I can only contribute with real life experience over/after the weekend (kids action shooting ;-) ). I was already suffering from 3.01 onwards. If this confirms this is the day where I decide to quit (maybe keep one for nostalgic reasons) - the question is just where I should head for. I thought to Sony (a7 cr or so) - but the new Nikon looks attractive, too. p.s. I think high ISO is somewhat imnportant, at least for me, as I am shooting sometimes in the apparently quite low light house (never above 6400 though)
I have been using manual lenses on XH2S and XT models waiting a year for this fix, last straw, done with Fuji, what a joke
This has been going on since the x-t3 it’s ok AF but I would not count on it . The final straw for me with the x-t3 was being unable to focus on a bright yellow flower on a sunny day . Haven’t been back to the brand since but I occasionally check on it .
I just had the issue two days ago. Exactly that with the X-T3. After a few trials, it completely stopped working… I had to remove the battery and then it worked again…
Version 3 for xh2 seems the best. After this firmware getting worst. Shame of fuji. My 60d is still hunting in low light comparing the fuji. But fuji is in war for even single focus in in low light. I can use fuji only under very very good light conditions because if light is little low fuji getting boring me. And i dont think hiw people struggle if they generally use video or afc. If so they should be away from fuji😢

Nope. The Voigtlander bug has NOT been fixed on the Nokton 35mm f/0.9 the Nokton 50mm f1.2 and Ultron-Macro f2.0. I tested it on the XT5.

this is the kind of result I used to get from my X100F....
So, at a basic level - you’re not sharing a crucial detail here - did you let the camera auto-adjust ANY of the exposure settings? You’re shooting your new photo tests in seemingly bad light, compared to your “reference of previous firmware tests” outdoors… if not, then your test is not worth anything - you need something close to normal expure +/- 1 ev to have eye after work dependably
There was plenty of light. Just think that I have the shutter speed at 1/250 iso 6400 correct exposure. So at 1/60 ISO 1600. Subject moving like a turtle - let's be serious UNACCEPTABLE RESULT'S.
I JUST tested my Olympus m43 camera in lower lighting conditions with erratically moving subjects - way better results.
It's simple. Take your Fujifilm camera set on eye af and point to a turtle moving subject, from 20 pictures none is good. What is more to talk?
But it seems I must make a second video where I'll be more decisive with my conclusions...
@@Tudor_Mateescu you just need to show the display of the back of the camera with the exposure metering also showing… because your scene sure seems underlit…
Also, I don’t know why you expect the 30 mm macro to be a good choice for speedy AF - it’s a macro… test with the venerable 50-140, for example- known to be speedy!

Using aperture priority, eye-focus auto detection, on an X-H2S, using a 50-140 2.8 at 2.8 - i just test-shot in burst even (20 fps, so half of maximum) in continuous AF, faces off of a tv screen… over 90% in absolute bang on focus! How do I know that - simple - the tv screen pixels are a visible part of each image in focus… using the new Firmware v7.00, which must be comparable to 4.00 on X-T5, right?

@@Tudor_Mateescu look, unlike you, i tested using a lens suited for the task. Unlike you, I disclosed every single important setting of the camera for the task. Unlike you, I shoot extensively on fuji and on nikon, on cropped, full frame, and also GFX… Trust me, i take photos which are great and flawless, i also fail - mostly due to my own excitement at the scene and situation. Unlike you, i’m not a gearhead, only interested in promoting
My YT channel by doing varied camera reviews every month - one month recommending one camera and system, the next, an entirely different one. Your credibility to actual photographers is near zero!

Well, that’s depressing. I had hoped Fuji was finally getting its autofocus issues sorted out. Like Tudor, I don’t use continuous focus that much, so Fuji’s poor continuous autofocus hasn’t impacted me too much. I can generally work around it. But still, Fuji should get this addressed so they aren’t so far behind their competitors. @Tudor - I see you’re getting some heat for your test. If you don’t mind, it might be good to have a part 2 where you try some other Fuji lenses maybe in different lighting conditions including possibly outside in brighter light. But either way, thanks for doing this. I really enjoy your channel.
Yes I will test it with the 18mm f1.4 at different iso values and different lighting... But I don't have high hopes. It seems firmware 2.0 worked better. I shot the 35mm f1.4 in low light with good success rates at higher iso when it was released. And didn't have this problem. Also the lens could be a problem in this scenario - but still not acceptable (it's a modern new lens and the light was enough).
@@Tudor_MateescuMy XT5 is still on firmware 2.10. I guess I’ll stay on that firmware version for now. Btw, in your past videos, thanks for your perspective on Voigtlander’s Ultron 27mm f2. I just bought that lens, and I’ve really been enjoying it. Plus it’s not impacted at all by Fuji’s autofocus issues!

Let's say it has AF :-) I was so happy with the X-T3 that I 'upgraded' to the X-T5. Big mistake !
With every new firmware update Fujifilm is loosing a substantial portion of their loyal users. Me included. It's crystal they desperately need help to make their Auto Focus on par with the current camera brands available at this time.
I've been a loyal Fujifilm user for over 10 years now, but I'm finally on the fence of purchasing a full-frame camera again. And I will probably sell all of my Fujifilm gear that I gathered over the years. Including X-T4, X-T5, X-H2S and X-E4 with just about every XF lens existing to date.
I'm just done and tired of their major incapability to progress.
They forced me to switch brands and I'm now looking to go back to either Nikon or Leica. Also strongly consider Sony ad well.

Focus area: Single, Zone or Tracking
AF-C Custom settings: Set 1 to 5 or custom
Boost mode is OFF
Disable IBIS when camera is on tripod
I can't risk using Eye/Subject Detection with my X-H2 at work because my focus hit rate is 80%, which isn't good enough. This percentage is what I would expect from a serious test. I don't want to offend you, but your hit rate of 10% must be largely due to human error.
It's not... This never happens with Sony... Never ever... I can shoot at iso 12800+ no problems.

I had the same issues myself, I took about 50 shots of my daughter and most of them focused on her T-shirt. Unbelievable! And that was on a sunny day ISO 200 BTW

I get it, you want to be out there first talkinh about firmware 4. I trust that you are an experienced photographer and not just a youtuber which means you would at least know that xt5 @6400 iso is a bit strange number to use for testing AF. 😁 Anyway, i would be very shock if all your findings are true. Fujifilm is not the best in AF department which is why i have a canon system when reliability and accuracy are impt to me. But surely, they would not risk releasing another firmware that's worse the the previous version. You sound very unhappy with your Fuji so why not sell it and just pick the right tool that will make you happy? Life is short, not worth getting a heart attack from firmware 4 upgrade! 😂 Take a chill pill, and if you still have lots of free time to burn (lucky you), give it another test. And oh, i always use my fuji camera almost permanently on af-M with vintage lenses. You reckon the firmware 4 will help me getting better pics with my takumars?

He just wanted to be out there first. I just upgraded my xt5 to fw 4 and it was better than fw 3 for sure. It can even lock on my wife's pupils despite her wearing glasses. Is it as good as canon's? No, BUT far better than how described it!
