What I learnt riding in the Himalayas for the first time.

- This video was created to help people interested in riding in the Ladakh region of the Himalayas for the first time. To help get a bit of an idea of what to expect, through the eyes of someone who is going there for the first time.
I run through the things I learnt, from permits, where to leave from, place to go, fuel, time of year, costs, navigation, accommodation, prepaid sim-cards, cash and more.
Amazing series. I was there July 2024, riding solo in Ladakh for 3 weeks. I had rented the new Himmy 450 in Leh, which was a very suitable bike for the terrain.
On Prepaid sim cards, only those registered in Leh/Ladakh will work in Ladakh. I got two different ones from different telcom brands (AirTel and Jio) in Leh and i later found that different areas have coverage only for 1 brand or the other, so i was glad to have two with me.The top of the famous passes and some villages will have a telcom signal. At Pangong lake, the best signal is at the army base on the west end of the lake. Telcom network coverage will improve as development progresses in the area.
On rental bikes, i was told that only those registered in Ladakh will be allowed to be ridden by tourists in Ladakh. I was surprised you didn't have to swap bikes in Leh from a Delhi bike to a Leh bike. (Perhaps because it's not registered as a rental bike?) This is apparently monitored by the local tourism union in Ladakh. My bike rental company in Leh arranged the Inner Line Permit for me, and gave me lots of photocopies so i was able to give a copy to each of the checkpoints. The permit was only valid for two weeks so i had to plan my route accordingly, to go to the controlled areas first, then to the areas which didn't need the permit during my 3rd week there.
i had flown from from Delhi to Leh and took 3 days 2 nights in Leh to acclimatize and to see the city of Leh, which was very interesting in itself. I met some other travellers at Tso Moriri that didn't take time to acclimatize and were suffering from Acute Mountain Sickness.
I had taken the "backroad" from Lamayuru heading south to Lingshed and to Zanskar, staying overnight at Photoksar along the way. It was an amazing ride but the massive storm at the end of July must have damaged the road there (as well as many others in the area).
Aryan Valley is an great place to stay - i recall that you were not able to find a homestay there as the homestays are at another village in the Valley. There are four main villages in Aryan Valley and the village of Garkone has the most homestays. I had my fill of delicious apricots that were growing there.
On the weather, i had good weather most of the time when i was there in July. The exceptions were the light rain and mild snow at Photi La and Umling La. I had brought thin handlebar mittens to help guard the against the cold wind and allow the use of summer gloves most of the time, but likewise had to change from summer gloves to thicker, windproof/waterproof gloves at the higher passes. There was a massive storm in the area a week after i left, which must have cleared just before your arrival.
Thanks for taking the time to produce this series. The production, videography, photography and commentary were all exemplary.
It's great to hear you enjoyed the series John. And thanks for sharing your person experience and more information on the bike hire. Yes the only thing I could think was that it wasn't a rental maybe. Hopefully this will help others and make their journeys better experiences.
It also starts again next Friday.
Thanks for this info John. 🙏
John, would you mind mentioning the bike rental place (if they and bike were good)?
Thanks for adding your summary which has answered several questions that came to mind as I watch the clip.
Great information!! Thanks!!
Breathtaking episodes Joe…Loved every moment of your journey. Sad that it’s over, didn’t want it to be over ever. Wanna see you exploring Himalayas again unforgettable, out of the world images. Thanks for giving so much information. Hope to see you soon again. KEPP ROCKING
I hope the information helps. It won't b e long until I am on the next journey. Thanks for watching
You’re a breath of fresh air - and a great photographer
Thank you for the support, it is greatly appreciated and will help with the next journey. It’s great to hear you enjoyed it
Hey Joe! Next time you are in New Delhi, we’d love to have you at our Angels and Roadsters Cafe. It’s a place for riders to gather, share stories, and enjoy some great food and drinks. We think you’d really enjoy the vibe and the community here! Let us know if you're interested - we'd be thrilled to host you.
If you are in Delhi then an angel and roadster is the best place for riders to get knowledge about the riding from the experienced riders and also enjoy the great food and ambience
One of the must visit place in Delhi NCR for a rider is Angels and Roadsters Cafe, the tasty food and the knowledge and tales of experience riders in Delhi. So much of things to learn from and so much of knowledge to gain. I must say this is a must visit place if you're in Delhi NCR.

Luscious food and a very beautiful environment ✨❤️
Great info. I managed to load a 23kg battery pack on the back of the wee farm bike; made handling a little interesting. Getting some k's under my belt. A phenomenal series.
As always thanks for the constant support. Awesome to hear you're having fun on that farm bike. This all starts again next week.
謝謝!
感謝您的支持,非常感謝,並將繼續邁向下一個旅程。
Thanks, very inspiring and informative. Looking forward to your next adventures.
Thank you for the support Maziar, it is greatly appreciated and will definitely help with the next journey, which starts next Friday.
@freewayproject Cheers mate! Watching your NZ and Himalayan videos had become my evening ritual over the past few weeks-I've learnt heaps and really enjoyed them. Your voiceovers are top-notch! I’m a fellow Queenslander who recently got a Honda CRF300L Rally and am still on my learner bike license. Can’t wait to travel the world on two wheels. Impatiently looking forward to your next series. Travel safe and keep up the great work! 🤗👍🏍️
Thanks!thanks for all the info and the reply
All good, I hope it helps, what ever you decide you'll have an epic time.
That's a great presentation. Thank you. Zanskar would've been great. The loop from Hanle to Umling La...suggest to anyone doing it to take the flat plains to the base of the hills and go up the dirt road. It's a sensational ride and the views are ..as good as everywhere else up there! Then, once you've had your dose of O2 at Umling La, head back to Hanle via PhotiLa...it's 18500ft and bitumen and switchbacks all the way up and all the way down. Just fantastic. Taking this route is acw from Hanle and you don't retrace much. Also, going up the dirt is better than riding down it as the switchbacks can be deep, treacherous sand. Congrats on a great series of videos. I'm entirely envious.
Thanks mate, it's great to hear you enjoyed it and thanks for adding more information here. I hope the information helps people. It all starts again next week. Thanks for watching.
Hi Joe, just came across your channel as the Vietnam episodes popped up on my feed.
This series on the Himalayas is inspiring and I really enjoyed the style and mindset of your videos.
Thank you for sharing your adventures.
It's great to hear you are enjoying the series. There are so many amazing places to explore. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series, thanks for watching.
You are such an amazing guy. You take time to reply to all of our comments. That's dedication. And for us individuals it's easy to comment but for you to take time out and sit and reply to all of them is just fantastic. I highly admire your love and compassion towards us.
Someday I would love to meet you in person. I hope it comes true. Don't know how and where and when and if at all it will happen. Will see. U r so full of life, you inspire me man. My girlfriend is a big fan too. We wanna meet and know your story, the Joe Ryan Experience. 😁
You never know, I meet a guy who was from Norway who had watch the first Australia series, he liked it so much he flew over bought a second had bike and rode down the east coast of Australia, in the most random spot (no one knew I was there) in the middle of nowhere he stoped at the same spot as me and said hi.
@@freewayproject holy lord !!! Really !!! That's unbelievable.🤩 How did you feel? What was your reaction then?
@@himansubaral4252 we were both very surprise as the chances were very very small
Thanks for bringing us all along on your trip. We are all looking forward to your next adventure. My first and only overseas motorcycle trip was to Vietnam. Thanks to this series of videos, India is going to be my next trip.

Thank you for the support Tomas, it is greatly appreciated. That's awesome you are going to see if traveling by bike is right for you. Next week is the start of the new series and I think it is the best place to do an overseas motorbike adventure for the first time.

It's great to hear you enjoyed the episode. There is a play list of the series, if that helps as it may make more sense watching in order. Thanks for watching.
Thank you Joe. This is sooo helpfull! Really appreciate it. Nothing better than concise, 1st hand experience.
I hope it does help and makes your trip easier with some of the small but helpful thing to know.
Way to go Joe.
What a great summary of your adventures, useful insights and information plus the videos of each segment.
That’s a lot of editing and time to create, many thanks.
I think I got as much beauty and compassion from the land you traveled through with your amazing gift of broadcasting it.
Your skills are natural and maybe you have been blessed with some of the Aboriginal gifts of passing knowledge forward

I'm sure it will be of great help to many travellers.
Thanks mate, I was lucky enough to experience the place, it just makes you want to share it with as many people as possible so they may also experience the joy and wonder of the place. As always thanks for watching,
Loved all your episodes really well. This final one was great in the sense, it gave an idea of all the important aspects. I did though feel bad that you were on a tight budget. Although I am not a rider but am pretty sure the riding community is a very close knit one and you would hv got sponsors. Anyhow, hope my country treated you well. Respects n Take care and keep riding. Happy New Year
Thanks mate, it is great to hear you enjoyed the series and the over view at the end. Lack of funds isn't going to stop me exploring, I 'll find a way.
Thanks for watching.
Fantastic that you have done a video like this. It is interesting and helpful for those of us who are planning to go riding in the area at some point.
I hope it does help. Thanks for watching.
Thanks!
Thanks you for the support mate, it is greatly appreciated and will help with the next series which starts next Friday.
@@freewayproject I really enjoyed your series and you give me the confirmation that my purchase of a Himalayan 450 is a good one. I really want to do the same region trip next year. I really appreciate what you did and I'm really glad I found you on UA-cam. Please keep the good work on!
Thankyou so much for sharing with us..
I never wanted this series to end..
But well hope you'll come back again someday ❤️
There is so much to explore in India, I will be back.
@freewayproject loved to hear from you... ❤️
Another amazing series, Joe ❤. The episodes on the bike & the planning are very thoughtful & helpful. Looking forward to your next series. Cheers!
Thanks mate, hopefully it will help people who are thinking of going to explore the region. The next journey started next week.
Hey Joe, loved the Himalayan series. Loved the shots at the end of each video. My god, they were beautiful. Would surely want a few prints for my office… soon!
Marking the places on the offline maps is such a great idea for Ladakh.
Riding alone for the first timers is surely not advised.
Got lucky with the weather mate, and those Indian shortcuts… epic!
Quick one… train doesn’t go to Manali yet. Maybe in couple of years.
Ride safe 🤙🏼
It's great to hear you enjoyed the series. It is an amazing place to ride. Some one else said they got the train to Manali, they did not mention the last part is by bus, so still an option for people if they think that best suits them. As always thanks for watching..
I'm keeping this as reference if I ever get to that part of the world. Thanks a lot Joe!
Hopefully you get to go it’s a great place to ride and explore
A great summary of the trip mate, I thoroughly enjoyed this series! Just bought a himmy 450 myself to get out on here in south east Queensland, you’re an inspiration to us. Merry Christmas and ride safe mate. 👍
I hope the information helps. It is an epic place to ride. Always good when there's a new bike to be ridden. It won't be long before I'm on the next one, like next week.
Great information Joe. I'm sure the detail will help many who trip over there. I'm still amazed what you did on a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and what you captured on video. Thank you. 😊
Yes hopefully it will help people who are interested to explore the region. It really showed the bike was design for this type of riding in that terrain. As always thanks for watching.
What a brilliant presentation, especially your map description of the route you took each episode. Can't wait to hear where you're going next!
Thanks Pippa, I hope it helps people interested in going. You only have to wait 7days.

Great series......Love your version of the rides .....it's all about the experience. Looking forward to your next trip. Garth
It's great to hear you enjoyed the series Garth, you won't have to look to far forward, the next journey begins next Friday.
Great series. I’ve been following you since the New Zealand trip and I have to tell you this is the third time I’ve had to resubscribe. You might talk to the You Tube gurus.
Thanks mate, it's always great to hear you enjoyed the series.
No idea how it would unsubscribe, a quick search online said there was an issue/glitch with this on youtube a few years ago, not sure if that is still happening. I'll see if I can find out anything else.
I was there from 20 Sep until 04 Oct earlier this year. End of the riding season withless traffic. Weather was brialliant. We did not experience any rain We flew into Dharamsala and took our 10 dayd to Leh. I continued solo after Leh. North of the Shyok river from Pangong lake to the Nubra Valley is rideable but parts of it over a dry river bed. No road but trails. I need to go back in June and shall see how much more I can get this time.
I followed you episodes and brought a smile to m face and with thid episode I fid it extremely usefulfor my next trip. Cheers...
It sounds like you scored with the weather and that time of year. I wish I had know of the track on the north side of Shyok River, it just means I'll have to go back (any excuse and I'm there). It's great to hear the information may help with your next journey. Thanks for watching
Hi Joe, thanks for sharing your experience. I found the map really interesting. It’s amazing to see the amount of ground you actually covered. I doubt I’ll ever get there but it sure looks like a great place to ride. 👍🇦🇺
It great to hear you found it interesting. You can see the route I took was not planed, it went back and forth a few times haha, well I was roaming.
As always thanks for watching.
@ That’s the beauty of motorcycle riding. I think you’ve nailed it Joe. 👍
Great information Joe, enjoyed the series immensely!

Great presentation, love watching you. Look forward to your next adventure.
Thanks Debra, I hope the information helps. You only have to look forward until next Friday and we will be on the next one.
Great summary! A lot of useful information and what's best - everything well shown on the maps!
What I really appreciated in your movies were the pictures at the end of each episode. Great pictures and great idea to show them in this way!
By the way, what software do you use to create map animations? It's very clean & clear.
I hope the information was useful and it's great to hear you enjoyed the series. I create the maps from scratch using Apple Motion.
Very helpful, thanks so much!
It great to hear the information was helpful, thanks for watching.
To the ones contemplating going there themselves: Just go!!! Watch this series to get a feel. I thoroughly enjoyed the vid's. Always eagerly awaiting the next one. @ Joe: Thanks for the maps!!! 🙂
Totally agree, just go. I hope it helps.
I followed your journey. Amazing and I am sure I will take these track one day. You may want to talk a little about how the bike behaved and anything a traveller should watch for. Great blog mate.
It’s great to hear you enjoyed your the series. If you got to the channel then click videos, the last 2 videos are, one on the bike and the other on the trip
Joe, fantastic chronicling of your adventure. Clearly your film making experience puts you at another level regarding shots and editing. But its you're storytelling and attitude I found compelling to keep me watching each episode. Some of it is your "Aussieness", but mostly your laid back personality regarding, lets see what happens. In your explaining during each episode you never once said "ah" or "uhh" between sentences. Maybe that is from post edit? :) I rode Nepal for 10days in March '24. The roads in Nepal are NOT what you rode in India and as far as I know there is not Google maps to follow. Now onto your NZ trip. Ride on Joe. Lee
It's great to hear you have enjoyed the series Lee. I don't normally ah and uhh so luckily I don't need to edit things like that out as it take long enough to edit these already 😂.
Hopefully in the future I'll get to explore Nepal as well.
I hope you enjoy the New Zealand series, it's another amazing place to ride. Thanks for watching.
Great info Joe - thanks for sharing 🤗
I hope it helps mate.
Thank you so much Joe, you've inspired me through this series and so I've booked my trip and going in June - where are you off to next ?!!
That is awesome Mark I am sure you'll have a great time. I'll let you know where to next this Friday.
Thanks for all the info Joe
I think you would enjoy riding up there, definitely worth a look and you can do basically all of it on sealed roads if needed.
Thank you so much for making this ❤
You are welcome, I hope it helps.
Watching this episode from manali. Loved the series!
That track from Manali to Killar was a great introduction to the Himalayas for me, more than I could have dreamed of. Thanks for watching.
What an epic journey Joe watched all episodes and there fantastic!!, good to see your home safe and sound, where are you going next have you got anywhere in mind? cheers mate
It's great to hear you enjoyed the series. Oh you know me and how I like a side track, well I may have taken one heading back to Australia. Where? well we will find out next Friday.

I hope the information helps, I hope that means you are planning a trip there, you'll have an epic time. Thanks for watching.
Perfect! Thank you Joe: true to your word. I will archive this.
Hoping to do some of this during July-August.
I know that RE (wisely) gave you a Himalayan but I am wondering about RE rentals in Leh or Manali.
For me it would be a flight from Delhi to Leh then two days of acclimatization then hit the road.
I think two weeks would suffice.
Once again, congrats on a superb series.
Looking forward to your next epic.
(I rode Morocco a few years ago and Sth Africa/Lesotho recently and thoroughly enjoyed both rides).
I believe you would too.
Best wishes.
Oh, John answered my question about rental in Leh.
Yes there are a few people who have left helpful information which is awesome. If you can map out a better plan I am sure you can fit in a lot in 2 weeks, I was roaming around a double back on myself a few times.
Those places all sound awesome and some were already on my list.
Hi Joe, Fantastic summary of your trip and great idea showing each episode on the map that was very helpful indeed. Thanks for all the useful information and tips. Amazing stuff. What are your plans for the next one? Really inspired to check out the Himalayas maybe with my kids when they are a lot older and my wife. Have to check out a 4x4 type of deal perhaps. Though it may not work as well with all the roadworks and narrow words.
It's definitely worth exploring any way you can.
Fantastic thanks. What's your next adventure plans? Any hints?
just a biker's paradise . unbriddled non stop adrenaline flow all through. its one of the few places where your bike gets the "wings"
It definitely is an incredible place to ride and explore.
Thanks for making those maps, always tedious to make!
I hope the information helps. I know before going you have no spacial awareness so to be able to visually see what location is where compared to the other always helped me. I did get your message and will reply, just been full on here and have a new series starting next Friday.
Great summary!
Thanks, I hope it helps
I hope it helps.
Thanks for lots of valuable info👍
I hope it helps. I hope that means you are planing a trip there, you'll have a epic time.
Excellent, information and track details are great. I did a trip in India 7 years ago, it was for 3 weeks, and involved about 20 riders, as it involved bigger citys, it was perfect. But these smaller towns, higher up, and less people, seem easier to do. I think.
Yes less people you can go at your own pace. I hope it helps.
Can't wait for the next trip; hurry back Joe!!!
You won't have to wait long Earl, it all begins next week
Howay man, lovely experience you made man
Yes riding through Ladakh region of the Himalayas was incredible. I hope you enjoyed the series
Cheers Joe.. very informative mate. 👍🍻
I hope it helps.
Hey Joe. Thank you for such an amazing series! I loved every single episode. What camera equipment did you take with you to record this journey? Also - what jacket were you using?
It's great to hear you enjoyed the series Mark.
Camera Gear: For the footage from the bike I am using a DJI Osmo action, for all other filming I am using a Sony A7SIII, for taking photos I am using an old Sony A7RIII from 2017. I only have space for 2 lenses which are a Sony GM 24mm 1.4 and a Sony GM 70mm - 200mm 2.8. I have a DJI Mavic drone
The jacket is a jacket i have had for 15 years, it is a Belstaff, it is Wax Cotton, there is no other product name on it.
Joe!!! It sounds like you’ll be back to northern India for another ride??? I feel though that next weeks episode will be in south east Asia somewhere.
3-4 months is a long time delay so it’s hard to imagine where you are now. Crossing bridges and doing u turns I hope !!
Putting all your videos together must be very time consuming. For the viewer it is well worth the wait. Thanks for your efforts, much appreciated.
Take care
Annie 🐧
Yes the time difference from film to uploading changes, the first episode are at the same time but each episode can take up to a week to edit so that's what stretches the time out from filming to being about to get the episode up on youtube. I wish I could edit them faster. But we are on another journey next week.
@ hey Joe. Where’s my cryptic clue? ✨🐧
JOE, can you also make a video on what all you have used to shoot your videos . they have come out excellent . and can you please tell me how you edited your videos.
I do have an older video that show the gear I use at the end of the first gear review I posted on the channel, nothing has changed, but here is the run down:
For the footage from the bike I am using a DJI Osmo action, for all other filming I am using a Sony A7SIII, for taking photos I am using an old Sony A7RIII from 2017. I only have space for 2 lenses which are a Sony GM 24mm 1.4 and a Sony GM 70mm - 200mm 2.8. I have a DJI Mavic drone
Depending on the episode it chan take 4 to 7 days to edit an episode.
@freewayproject they are awesome, no words .
Great tips, can you make a video about the duration and cost involve for such trip. Thxs! ✌🏽
I was there just over 3 weeks. From the numbers I explained in the video it cost me about $20 - $25AUD a day but I was only eating once a day and Royal Enfield lent me the bike so that amount is with out bike hire.
@ great and what about motorcycle rental cost?
@@jtrvlsthewrld As mention about and at the start of the first episode Royal Enfield lent me the bike for the journey, so I do not have any information on how much it is to rent bike there.
You are great! 👏👏
Which jacket and pants did you used?
I hope you enjoyed the series.
Boots TCX- Drifter
Jacket is a Belstaff (brand), it is 15 years old it does not have anything else written on it so not sure of the type.
Hi Joe love your videos. I’m in London on a break. I think I spent your budget in one day. 😂 I might look at India for a couple of months next adventure. 👍
haha, yer I got it down to about $25AUD £12 on average, I think the least I spent was $12 £6. So the bang for the buck was huge. Definitely get there if you can.
Good on ya mate! I think this might be your best yet, and I can't wait for the next! Question, did your nav software not work with the built in map feature on the Himalayan? I noticed you were using your phone, not the Himalayan's screen.
I don't look at my navigation much at all when I set off and when I get lost. My phone needs to be on the mount as the plug doesn't work, the mount has wireless charging so it's the only way to charge it. So as I am not racing and there are not a lot of options for roads in the region so I hardly looked at the navigation ( I am good with visualising maps in my head) there seem no point to try get it to work.
New Journey begins next week.
@@freewayproject next week???? Yea! My difficulty comes in places where I'm supposed to make the next turn. Most of the time the name has changed, or there's no road sign. So a visual is good in my case. BTW... your pug is most likely clogged with lint from your pocket. No worries, it can be cleaned out.
@@terrycavender I did see one name sign in Ladakh, I new there was the Manali Leh HWY but no other road names.
my phone has 3 of the 6 strip contact missing in the port, so I'll have to keep charging it wirelessly until the phone totally dies.
@@freewayproject mystery highways..... 🤣
@@freewayproject I'd say that's broken alright. So, Itchy Boots Nav unit fell off in her last episode. She ran over it, now it is a $1,000 paperweight. 🙄Thinking your way is better.
Awesome info Joe👍.
We have all heard of "Delhi belly". Did you have any health issues with the food at all?.
Thanks mate, I hope the information helps. No food issues at all, but I ate very little down to just the one small meal a day so less chance of getting sick as a bonus.
Speaking of people who used to ride up there on the old Bullets, just watched a guy on UA-cam do it on a completely stock RE 350 classic, Those bikes are like tractors lol
I think most bikes would get through there, it just depends how fast you could do it, but that's the thing about the place you don't want to do it fast, there is to much to see. As always thanks for watching mate.
Love your Himalayan adventure videos. Appreciate if you could share also on how to rent a bike in India to take on this journey. Thanks!
It's great to hear you enjoyed the series, as mention at the beginning of the first episode, Royal Enfield lent me the bike to do the journey so I did not rent it. There are a lot of rental places in Leh and Manali, i am sure you could arrive in Leh walk-in to one of the rental shops and walk out with a rented bike.
Congratulations on a fabulous series Joe I was captivated by every episode. You really are a gifted creator of epic motorcycle adventures. I’m planning a 2 months motorcycle trip during June/July 2025 covering similar areas as you just have.
I have a couple questions please :-
1) Motorcycle licence for India…I have a Aussie bike licence but do I also need an Aussie issued IDP or other licence to ride legally ?
2) When you talk about cash which currency would you recommend taking.
Thanks again and looking forward to your next adventure.
I had my normal RE motorcycle licence. I had an International Driver permit but they didn't want it (this is my personal experience not sure if this is the same for everyone). I went through a lot of police check points , not one asked for anything besides my passport. So from my experience you just need your motorcycle Licence.
I took Australia dollars and checked it there, don't check it to Indian before you leave Australia exchanges charge ridiculous fees, even getting off the place in Delhi the rate was better with no "fees" and then out of the airport the rates were better again.
Thanks Joe…much appreciated
Do you carry your helmet or do you buy one in the country you visit? Great video as always. Cheers Joe.
I took my helmet with me, everything I had brought from Australia, it all fitted into a double bag and weight 19kg. There is a gear review after the New Zealand journey which shows what I packed but for the Himalayas I did not take my tent or sleeping gear.
Hey I watched all the episodes. Very beautifully captured and loved the story line also. Quick question on Drone - How and where we can get drone permission? Is it allowed without any permission?
There is not a lot of clarity around drones in India, you are not allow to import drones, which becomes unclear when traveling with drones as the definition of an import is to bring goods in to sell for profit. Then there are other rules that give high restrictions and no fly areas which would mean you are allow to fly drones as there are rules around them. There is an website online that you can apply for drone permits but apparently it takes so long no one does it.
@@freewayproject thanks :)
The best!!
I hope the information helps.
@freewayproject always man..
This might seem silly but it's nice to see in the videos when you stop for fuel. As a viewer it's reassuring to see that you're getting fuel when you need it
The region has a decent amount of fuel stations, the most remote one was before the highest motorable road in the world. I think I showed stopping at it one the way out, there is not much just the pumps and an attendant. But I don't think I went more than 200km between fuel stations.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks Joe, this is much appreciated. Where did you hire the bike from?
You are welcome, as mention at the beginning of the first episode, Royal Enfield lent me the bike to do the journey so I did not rent/hire it. I am not sure of the exact process but there were a lot of rental places in Leh and Manali so I gather it is like renting a vehicle in most places.
Hey Joe, I might have missed you saying it but how many days was the trip door to door? PS Hurry up & get into the next adventure, what am I gunna watch on a Friday night now 😂. Cheers, Marto
I am not actually sure haha, I think a bit over 3 weeks. Don't worry I got you covered next Friday we're on it again.
You probably managed to answer every question someone might have about touring the North, thank you 😊.
The only question I have is relating to money, I went to India early this year and found I could only withdraw small amounts of local currency, like about £100, did you have the same problem? Or did you take a decent amount of dollars with you to change in the tourist areas.
Great episode to finish your adventure with, the bike review not withstanding.
Can't wait for your next adventure.
I hope it was helpful. I took all the cash I had for the trip in Australia dollars (cash) and changed it there at money exchange places. That why i was rationing food as it's all I had.
Was hoping you would have touched on the language aspect.
I didn't know any of the other languages spoken in the area, if they couldn't speak English (not a lot do in the smaller villages, a lot do in the larger towns) I would use basic hand signals and that was enough to communicate.
best is to avoid the northern hills during july and august as its the prime rainy season . apr may june then later on sep are the best months .
I must have had a unusually good year then as I got very little rain.
@@freewayproject yea the weather pattern was unusual this time around due to the EL Nino phenomenon
Hi Joe, thanks very much for this incredible series. Would you mind sharing how you store your video data safely while riding please? Do you upload along the way into the cloud or just have multiple drives? How much storage did you need?
It's great to hear you enjoyed the series. I have a basic normal external hard drive about the size of a mobile phone but a bit thicker. I down load to it when I can, it's the only copy I have. the footage from the trip was about 2T
@ Thanks very much for sharing that 😁
U cant get train to manali. Only in kalka. Then bus. Or take direct bus to manali from delhi.
Oh I had friends you said they got train to Manali, they must have not mentioned the bus, thanks for the information.
As always, 👍
Thanks mate.
