Maverick is "an unorthodox or independent-minded person." End of story.
Love what Souness said about half time talks. Makes total sense from a Psychological point of view. Lets players reflect for as long as you can after half time, let them workout themselves what they did wrong, this is part of how the brain grows. Then impart what you think, keep it short and never shout, quieter you speak, more people absorb what you say and then just give them a few mins to collect themselves before they go out.

Bizzare hit piece on Grealish. Obviously never watched him week in week out for Villa- he was unbelievably good. His actions against Birmingham when he was attacked was inspiring for younger fans. Jack Grealish at Villa definitely was a maverick/magician.

Here we go, Grealish is different at city, he fits in tactically to the team like he should do, like Pep wants, like he's paid to do... so what's the problem? Souness said the worst thing pogba did was win the world cup, the pinnacle of his sport... make it make sense. He only praises liverpool players.

On Man City, Simon talking from a business point of view not actually from a “Fair Play” point of view. Maybe that’s why the Premier League changed the name of the regulations, because it’s certainly not being done fairly. It penalises a club that’s promoted to the Premier league because its owner has tried to invest and keep the club in the league. Basically making the league a closed shop, and the top 4 or 5 an exclusive club. That’s the real reason the ace I’ve eats of Clough and Taylor will never be repeated, it’s no longer possible to rise from modest backgrounds to the top. The top clubs used to have a few of the best players in the country, they now have a team full of the best players in the world.

H Redknapp said many years ago, you have to know what you're going to do with the ball before you receive it. Don't see Grealish having that ability.

He literally pulls about 3 defenders to him every time he gets the ball in the final third. Seriously watch him next time he plays. It'll show you he knows exactly what he's doing and why Pep puts so much trust in him in big games.
Having said all that Doku's arrival is showing us that Grealish does need to work on some of his game.

George Best, Eric Cantona, Zlatan Ibrahimovic etc. These were mavericks and they won things. Maybe not every title but they were legends.

I remember a game where Graeme nearly cut Stan Bowles in half with a waist high tackle with homicidal intentions at Loftus road when Souness was still at Middlesboro...
And actually did nobble Gerry Francis at Loftus Road in the same game and Francis got carried off!
I got to know David Needham who played in the great Forest team . I asked him who was the best player he'd played with and he said without doubt John Robertson .

I work in advertising and I’m a big fan of Simon, so want him to succeed and want to watch more content from him - smartest football head around and often the only one worth listening to, so my recommendation for greater appeal is to please change that music upfront to something more upbeat and modern - it’s tough to listen to with black and white imagery in the previews, may not capture a wider/ new audience then your already invested/engaged talk sport listeners🙏

i think grealish has improved massively as a player,hes a cog in a well oiled machine,the way he can recieve the ball on the half turn and shield and keep it then move it on,or drop the shoulder and go past someone hes the perfect pep player,when he was at Villa he was relied upon to score and assist or they lost,hes just less selfish now and part of something bigger,one week or year i suppose graeme hypes up billy gilmour just for being regularly able to recieve the pass then find someone in the same jersey,grealish very rarely gives up possesion and when u watch him he regularly comes inside like hes gonna dribble or shoot then plays the reverse pass to a teamate on the run into the box it rarely goes wrong

Lets get it straight. The premier league is the super league of world football. It has the best of everything. Players, managers, fans, DOF etc etc. People this week and last were suggesting the champions league had turned boring. I agree. Due to the fact that the boys have stated. The premier league is just so entertaining with more drama, twist and turns and unpredicitablitiy. Its just so good!
Have been watching Villa for over 50 years. JG easily one of the most gifted/talented ballers I’ve ever seen. Has been strangled at MC and unable to move freely and use the skills he used at VP in the same way. Have him back tomorrow. Trouble we’ve always had is Aston Villa are not a fashionable club. Had JG been at London club etc there would have been more coverage of him in a positive light. He’s never been a diver - he has a knack of drawing dopey tacklers then nipping the ball away as their foot/leg/body comes in “Thank you very much, I’ll have that foul…..again.” As far as Souness is concerned it’s just lazy punditry combined with my previous comment about Villa not being fashionable. I remember Souness saying (when JG was at Villa) that he thought JG being continuously fouled was due to his ‘lack of vision’. Do me a favour! Since then, Souness probably thinks he has to back up what he said then and is not professional enough to admit he might be wrong. It’s been tough being a Villa fan over the last 50 years - apart from a couple of purple patches we have been average to poor as a football club on and off the pitch, in other words, I’m not being biased just ‘cause JG was a Villian, I’ve simply been able to recognise (unfortunately only on one hand) when Villa have produced a gem. and game did end 0/0 but Robertson was best player on the park by a country mile .
And as for Graeme Sounness although im a Celtic guy i felt Souness was a top class midfielder , a cracking player
with the never say die attitude and top class footballer for both Liverpool , Rangers and Scotland .

Grealish is tailored to teams that play out. He offers the control needed so the game doesn't turn into a ping pong match like Chelsea. Doku is suited to teams that sit back in double banks. It's a tactical issue. He's not there for goals and assists.... looking at the right wingers number at City its not that high either. This narrative is ridiculous.

I don't mind a maverick. The issue with Grealish is his lack of professionalism. After winning with City I'm sure a few players had a drink or two. Grealish though went on a bender lasting few days. His teammates even had to hold him to prevent him falling off the celebration bus. He's going to become another Gazza who never realises his full potential.

Grealish seems like a really great person. As a footballer he looks like a midfielder to me. He lacks speed and power to be an attacker.
Villa fan here and Grealish is GREAT at what he does. He can hold the ball high up the wing and rarely loses position and is great at inducing fouls. The rest of the game is not Jacks way of playing.
Alot of people forget, he was only put on the left wing at Villa to fill a vacant position, Bolaise left and Villa had no cover. PREVIOUSLY he was playing a 10 role in midfield and that was his preferred position. It's just shame that the left wing position seems to be the defacto option for him and Pep doesn't allow him to drift in to the centre (like Villa did) but completely understandable with the midfielders at city have.
Maverick is someone who is celebrated for breaking the mould. They are succesful. Eg If a goalkeeper keeps running in with the ball way out into the outfield and launching succesful attacks, doing succesful scorpion kicks...thats a maverick. If the other team keep scoring while he did that...thats a liability

Gascoigne was a maverick. Shearer was a maverick.... Grealish won more than then and tbh if Grealish won the league for Man City against West Ham the season before last. Pep has changed his game he keeps the ball or gets a foul. Let's not forget his input against Liverpool last season one minute saving a goal scoring opportunity next setting up a goal down the other side of the pitch. Maybe talk about some other British players that aren't living up to the hype.
Grealish was great at Villa, he's not a player that excels in a system. He has strengths, dribbling, balance and flair that are uncommon these days. Pep isnt going to play him in the same role that Smith did at Villa - he doesnt need to. Grealish is similar to Gascoigne this doesn't work at city a team full of stars but worked well at Villa were he was capable of taking the game by the scruff off the neck against the weaker teams in the prem, he also has the ability to rise when the pressures on a rare talent, he can win games on his own.
Grealish is one of the most talented English players in an age when they want players to score 20 a season and run 15 miles. I’d play him on the left for England, Foden and Bellingham Rice and Saka

Assists are part of football as are goals for attacking creative players. Barnes, Beardsley, Gerrard, Lampard, Robben, Ozil, Di Maria etc

@@Rain188 That’s incorrect, City had no intention of engaging with the corrupt EUFA kangaroo court and always intended on legal advice to go to CAS who completely exonerated them and the fine was for not cooperating with EUFA. The statue of limitations is SIX years and is the same in the Premier League case where City could have everything prior to 2017 thrown out as time expired however City know just like last time they have the proof and evidence to clear themselves of these malicious allegations. The hapless Premier League is desperately trying to find a way out of the mess that they have created for themselves without losing to much face.

@Simon nothing substantial will come of the City charges, at best some heavy financial fine. What could have reshaped the morals of football would have been seizing the trophies and deducting them points to relegation levels but we all know how that impacted Italian Serie A hence the Premier League won't do it and settle for the financial penalty.

I don't think every striker wants a cross. I think that's a very Engilish idea of football I'd rather have a Mane, Salah, Vinicius, player. Foden doesn't just take a touch and cross. That's an old antiquated way of playing football. He says mavericks don't win. They win at Madrid.
When i saw grealish play for city, he has to play too safe, not encouraged to always take his man on, has an affect on his style. , so hes now more safe and patient and less effective in front of goal. He was best in a free role for a lesser quality team than city. He shouldn't be starting on the left for england with this form. However as a personality and character hes great. Good on him for enjoying the treble success and the work he does with disabled kids.
