Hi! Im a university student and enrolled in my first oil painting course. I'm able to do all the things I couldn't with acrylic and vise versa. I am grateful to start my morning learning from you and I can wait to paint along side your videos. Thank for the amazing content, it doesn't go unappreciated!
I was about to give up painting until i found one of your video about shapes. This litteraly changed my art journey and now i just keep on improving my paintings. Thank you paint coach!
You need to try some tutorials. I started about 7 years ago totally on my own... 6 years later... I wasn't much better... then I discovered tutorials. Looking at my old and new paintings, you'd never think they were made by the same person. My favorites are "Stay Creative Painting" with Ryan O'Rourke, "M Stuart Painting" with Murray Stuart (maybe Stewart (can't remember)) Chuck black art and Angie Anderson I especially like Ryan's 10 minute Painting series as they are less daunting but still look very nice
I have taken all the courses Chris offers and they have made a HUGE difference with my oil painting. I am having much more fun painting now as well. I am not lost and when you watch any oil painting video it's much easier to follow along after taking his fundamentals course. Its one of the best tutorials out there. Almost all the other tutorials out there are you following along painting what the artist is painting that day and that's it. You don't get much from that way of learning. I am still lost after those tutorials. Chris teaching the FUNDAMENTALS puts you miles ahead in learning and you start to feel and know you can paint anything. Also his courses are much better than the $2,500 option that is out there.
I love your discussion type videos. I started with and still paint with Acrylics. I started about 2 yrs ago in my spare time. An RN does not have a lot of spare time to be fair, but the fundamentals you elaborate on are relevant and helpful, no matter how you paint or what you paint with. With the small amount of experience I have putting paint to canvas, your insight and my ability to apply the concepts you convey should make a definite difference for me. Thank you very much
Oh my… I learned more in this video than I did with years of drawing, art, painting, and advanced art classes, and art honor society all together! I was never taught to look at “rounded” objects as planes. I knew you could draw faces that way, so I don’t know why I didn’t think about doing that with all curved surfaces. AND…. to think of the way rain would fall to understand how to use paint strokes in landscape paintings… that’s brilliant. I apologize… but that is awesome advice
Thanks so much for the point about imagining rain flowing over the landscape. I don't know why, but something clicked for me after hearing that. I hope you know that you've been a huge motivation for me to keep painting and that your videos are incredibly helpful.
I'm not sure if someone told you this before, but as a digital painter who never went in traditional painting, these lessons are gold and easily reflects to my digital work! Thank you Chris, always happy to see your videos pop up in my feed.❤
I took Chris’s Foundations of Oil painting class. Very worth it. I’m miniature painter, using mostly acrylics, and wanted to learn to use oil paints for diorama backgrounds. And his class really does make it easy.
I always painted drunk mainly landscape but when I painted them I had no idea I'd just replicate what I know. My last completed was grass covered cliffs overlooking two lakes with a pathway I gave it away to a friend I wish I didn't because it taught me alot and it was a good reference.
Your point on “planes” - over the past few months I’ve focused on planes and now see every painting as a collection of planes. As the detail increases so do the number of planes. It’s really helped me shape the painting. Now brushwork and colors will come with practice.
I also noted in your Cove, painting that was bothering you, the buildings in the background and the reflection in the water, the reflection of the buildings looks more like trees, then the buildings, The buildings have more of a straight pronounced shape in the picture, instead of the pointed shape in the water, instead of the pronounced shapes of the building, reflecting off the water, it throws the painting off.
I got the foundations bundle Chris mentions in this video almost a year and half ago. It was so the only things I found to give me a working understanding of the fundamentals. I’ve been painting more confidently ever since. I truly believe Paint Coach has fulfilled his promise to help me improve and get better faster. 100%
I have professionally painted in acrylics for many years, and admit that I was a bit intimidated by oils; I was always thinking I would just make a mess of them, given that I am used to the fact that with acrylics, if you put a mark down, it will soon be dry and in no danger of smearing. But I am starting to experiment with oils now, and am finding them quite enjoyable... though it certainly is taking some getting used to. Your videos are an excellent basics guide for my progress with adapting to oils. Thanks!
I bought these 2 courses last month, amazing content! So worth the investment. I should be receiving your brush set tomorrow from Rosemary & Co. I’m so happy to have found you so I can learn to oil paint. You’re an amazing teacher, thank you!
You get better and better. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom. I didn’t get ANYTHING out of college classes in the 80s. Now I know I’m getting the basics and it makes so much sense. So appreciate it.
I got the courses and they really helped me to improve my painting. I did all the exercises before doing the course and then later to compare the improvements and after seeing that I am really glad to get the courses :D
OMG you hit right on a problem I've been having that I didn't even realize! I've been picking subject matter to paint that was a lot like the apple on the left in your example - not a lot of differentiation between the lights & shadows, very little "drama". I'll make more of an effort in the future to focus on the qualities of my subject matter and not just the subject itself. Thanks for this video!
And you are such a good teacher! I know a lot of people are getting terrific info out of your videos! You break things down so it's relatable and understandable! So many channels don't are so vague or assume the audience knows everything already. Your perspective about painting is so insightful and specific.
Ur initial story is exactly similar to mine.. I have done BFA n not learn a single thing from professors.. They never gave us demonstrations, they assumed if we are in college we already know everything about painting and drawing!😏 I struggled a lot in learning oil on canvas, thanks to youtube I've taught myself a decent amount of painting techniques!! 😌😇
My painting teacher at Kent State University used to spend about 10 seconds on each student, leave to go drinking at a bar, then come back 3 hours later when 95% of the class was gone. Never once did he demonstate a thing and he was drunk when he returned. I have learned more from excellent artists like Chris than any university class.
Your process sounds familiar. I went through the same thing starting in 2017 with watercolor. You have to go after it yourself and read and do something daily. Great work your doing now.
My question is , do you do better paintings when your studio is separated from your home. Do you have a studio not in your house? Or do you do better paintings in the house? My preference is doing to get better paintings having a studio away from the house? I ask myself, what am I doing here? I answer, to do paintings. When I do paintings or artwork at the house, it usually doesn't get done. So I hear in reference to try doing paintings at home, Pleasure and Business don't mix. I agree. Like your tutorials on painting very much.
I love your work. And your thought process... reminds me of how Ned Mueller approaches his subjects, composition, etc.... thanks man! I hope to get to you guys level one day!
You said the sale ends March 23rd; I don't know when this video was posted so, to me, since today's date is June 23rd, 2023, I have almost a whole year to purchase this package! Is that right?
Ugh! I missed the $77 deal 😣… Is this the first and only or maybe in the future you may run this deal again? Really appreciate all the support you provide 🙏🏽
Hi Chris. Have been following you for about 3 years now and I always look forward to your weekly UA-cam videos. I also follow Ian Roberts regularly and also like Marc Dalessio and Kevin Macphersons work. Have your Foundations course which I enjoyed and also signed up for Paint Week. The still life came out pretty well I think but struggled with the beach landscape scene mainly with the form of the trees and cutting in the sky. Don't have a Facebook page but will be getting on Instagram and will try to post what I have. Any criticism would be greatly appreciated! Main issues for me are finding the time and making the most of it as well as color mixing. But I am trying to keep the momentum going and using the limited palette you recommend. Thank you for the videos!
Quick question. When I’m painting wet on wet I’m haveing issues layering. I do a thin layer of liquid white, then do my background colors, and everything goes well. Then when I start trying to apply layers on top the paint brush seems to pull the color of the background on the brush and not laying the color on the brush down. It doesn’t seem to matter if I add thinner or or linseed oil it still won’t pull the color from the brush. Any advice. You are awesome by the way man. You truly seem to remember what it’s like to be a student. And you make everything make more sense. Keep up the good work
Super solid. Ya its amazing how crappy university painting is. I was luckily that at a small school I saw my prof painting on site and learned his technique by watching and formed the basis of my geometric abstraction. The rest was just painting in a room, which helps, but you need to be able to study a master, then later develop a style I think.
Looks like a great deal wow. I can’t sign up yet but when I’m ready I’ve always enjoyed your videos. So helpful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your tips. I love oil painting but I know very little! I’m currently working in soft pastels.
Hello sir.. I learned whatever I know about painting from you, and I paint all the small paintings from your youtube videos.. please upload more of those as I am a student and cannot afford your patreon page right now..
Hello. I’ve been doing watercolor and I really want to try your courses. Will you offer this paint week bundle again? How do I email you with questions? Thanks, Mary
I am interested in the offer currently on, but my circumstances are such that I will not be able to pick up supplies until May. If I purchase in the next few days, will I still have access at that time to the same resources?
Hello Chris , thanks fot all you tips. Can you explain how did you make the pictures with big shapes from the original picture? what filter did you use?
Just starting out with oils. Having lots of issues with layering. Tried to enroll in your online course but I guess you are booked. Would love to get into your next course. Any helpful advice would be much appreciated
This video is truly amazing and useful, learning the basics of traditional painting is always something I always return to every six months to make sure I'm applying them properly on my own works... but at the beginning of the video where the camera is focusing you I had to rewind it a little cuz I got too distracted on the glorious Nicholas Cage's collab behind you aylmao

Hi Coach! If you ever wanted to show how you use Photoshop as a tool for your paintings, that would be a cool video! Either way, keep up the great work!
