I really like these “whats on the shelf” episodes. Being new to the bourbon/whiskey game, it’s helpful to hear about available, affordable options that I’d actually purchase.
Old Grand-Dad BiB was a very pleasant surprise. I had read good things about it, but you never know when the price point is as low as this one is. In the end, it's become a favorite "Bottom Shelf" Bourbon.

Enjoying my first pour of this. Happened to buy it since it was next to my usual WT101 ON THE SHELF at my local store. Good stuff, it reminds me a lot of Evan Williams BiB but less citrus/sharp and more honeyed. Nutty notes are the common point. It probably won't dethrone WT101 as my go-to since this one seems more muted by comparison, but I see myself coming back to it as a change of pace in the future.
OGD bib is a really nice pour for the price especially. Definitely pick up a bottle for the week if you don't see something else that piques your interest. A really good option. Check out Evan Williams BIB for a few bucks less too.
I find the first drink or so of OGD BIB to be pretty good, but if drinking more than that it has a harsh alcoholic bite to it that I don't get from other BIB whiskies I've tried.
This is a damn solid sipper especially for the price but where it really shines is as the go to bourbon for a budget minded home cocktail bar. The extra proof and rye spice notes really help it shine in just about any bourbon cocktail I can think of, and it's pleasantly balanced yet distinct flavor combined with a value price point (still well under $25 a fifth here) make it a no brainer for that role!
I have only been "tasting" bourbon for a couple of months. Always drank bourbon mixed in a cocktail. I started drinking bourbon neat, in glasses where I could get that nose you speak of. When tasting the different bourbons I have tried to pick out the different flavors. Some have been quite obvious to me. I have been able to pick out vanilla, caramel, citrus, and. oak. The other flavors had been escaping me. I had been drinking the high rye, but picked up a bottle of Weller Special Reserve at my liquor store of choice. (They keep it out of sight in the back.) I had some the night before last and enjoyed the wheated aspects of it. Last night I had some again and it was naturally quite nice with a lot of similar flavors coming through. After one glass of Weller, I poured a glass of OGD Bonded. It was like a bit into peanut brittle! The peanutty flavor that you had spoken of just BURST through. Wow. I said all of that to say this; my pallet seems to be improving. lol
I got a sample of this in my bourbon stash. It doesn't get a lot of love in most review. Nice to see you giving it a bit of love - hope I'll like it too 🙂

Hey Jason, I'm really loving this series and appreciate that you have listened to your audience asking for more coverage of readily available options. Single bottle reviews are great, but I wonder if it would add something to this if you did a line of offerings from a brand especially when its the same mash bill just aged or bottled at varying proofs (OGD, OGD BiB, OGD 114) and single bottles when they're a little more unique in their age, mash bill, barrel, or finish compared to the rest of the brand's line, if that makes sense? I don't want you to feel like you're burning through these, but it could show people what is available and at different price points within a brand's line. Just a thought. Looking forward to more of these!

I will say there will be instances where I can do that with brands with not too many offerings. This Wednesday I am doing the jack Daniels lineup excluding the ryes. This did not work for me. It goes on sale for $20 in Alberta (Calgary) sometimes but I still wouldn't buy it. I would take four Roses yellow label over this 24/7.....I actually just did today...$28
Couodnt agree more. Several better starter bourbons then Basil Hayden. Cant wait to follow this new series, great idea! My favorite of the OGD line is the 114, although the bonded is great value as well!🔥🥃
Been seeing a lot of comments like that. What do you mean by better? In what direction does it go? Have my 1st bottle, so wondering if I should wait for that, or pour it into smaller bottles to preserve the original flavor. Generally, after being open, some alcohol evaporates, so it lowers the proof. Makes the flavor less intense, less sharpness, bite, etc. Maybe more smooth than newly opened bottle.
Ironically I’m drinking a hard to find bottle of Henry McKenna 10 year I found this evening, their last one, but had a bottle of Old Grand Dad BiB in my hand before they dug out the McKenna. Cheers 🥃
I enjoy Jim Beam Bonded, I can't find it anymore with the exception of the duty free store in Sault Ste Marie, On., on a fall fishing trip. Can you shed any light on this ? It seems like it just disapeared. Its not even on Beam's Website, lots of it the duty free though. Can you shed any light on this,? Thanks.
So excited for this and to start with one that I love. I sometimes get an almond aftertaste on this finish. Like after you have ate the almonds. I did finally get a bottle of the OGD114. But that is tricky for me to find. The bonded however almost everyone carries. Cheers and so gunna enjoy the series for the working class blue collar folks like myself.
I just read a review of this from Breaking Bourbon and he thought that the newer release was superior to an older (2013). Do you have any similar opinion? The reason I ask is that I just found a store still carrying 1.75s for $36. I know that they stopped making 1.75s some time ago, so I imagine it's somewhat older. Just wondered if I should take a chance on it.

Thats black saddle 12 year. Its a kentucky sourced bourbon that won alot of awards in 2014 before it disappeared. It just reappeared and I grabbed it. Its pretty good. Still not worth the 50 I paid.
A buddy at work gave me a bottle of this and your description of after the first 2 sips it gets muted is exactly right. Think I will save this for an Old Fashion mixer or have 2 sip pours only :)
I can for sure tell you that us new guys can't taste any of what you just said.. there were 11 of us.. none tasted that!!... tastes like maybe aftershave and I get the slight hint of gasoline.. maybe some lighter fluid on the back.....

Evan Williams BIB is unbelievably smooth. So smooth that I try to find others because I enjoy the heat lol. But it is great.
I need to try OGD BiB again. I didn't really like the bottle I bought. However, I do really like the 114.
I can't find OGD 114 in Virginia it's been my go to for the last few years

Its not as flavorful as the 114 but a very solid pour.

it does get muted. Alot of said its a great mixer.
Compared this to 1792, shoulda done it against Beam Bonded lol.
