In making this video, I was helped by a fantastic team of artists. Thanks Dzhem Seyfi (Crospy) and Amine Zainy for your incredible work making frames for this video. It wouldn’t have been possible without you!
Thanks for the video, man!

My man I just found your channel, hot damn I have been missing out
Cool video! Really liked it keep making great content!
Poor Melios, so innocent and pure....
True but they were allies with sparta
@@ethandew1768 they were neutral, they previously had ties to Sparta but were neutral during the wars

I love this. You are doing a great job with representing history.
Very nice video. If you are looking for an extremely interesting yet not often talked about war check out the Iran-Iraq war from 1980-1988. Electrified swamps, citywide missile bunkers, unrestricted usage of chemical weapons, and ww1 style infantry charges. Would make for a very interesting video
Im starting to be a fan!)
Oh my god, this is amazing. Love your channel by the way, been watching for a year or two now ;)
Yup, democracy is not about what's right. It's about power through popularity.
Nice people are finally doing history vids again
CallMeEzekiel I'm a Greek American and I wanted to say that this video was great! You should do more videos about Greek history maybe, it's very interesting.
I am not even gonna ask why a Greek would immigrate to america. But yeah I will agree Greek history is really interesting.
@@coasterexpert7501 their is 1 reason greeks would immigrate to america. To preserve their greek heritiage culture and knowledge from ottoman influence. The ottomans attempted many times to bassicly integrate greece into ottoman culture and religion like albania. So it's understandable why some greeks would attempt to flee from this attempted ottomisation of the greek people. So theirs your answer.
@@coasterexpert7501 Greek economy perhaps?
@@coasterexpert7501 They had a horrible unemployment problem with very high taxes and a bad economy. Greece may be beautiful, but not a lot of economic opportunities

Korinth: Strike now i Beg You!
"You will Plunge Greece into Chaos!"
Sparta: Then from Chaos We will Rise!
Did the Melian dialogue actually happen? I'm skeptical. But it is at least trying to explain the power dynamics at play here.
The Peloponnesian war was war between greeck alliance and persia
Athenians really sound like the British
They are so adorable
2:20 wait, they wanted Sparta, who saw themselves as a foreign invader/ imperialist and not “Greek”, or whatever overarching term they might’ve had at the time, to save them from imperialism?
This is a long one.
So, the ancient Greeks tell a story called "The Return of the Heracletae" which literally means "the return of the children of Hercules".
During the bronze age, the Dorians (aka western Greek linguistic group) were forced from the Peloponnese by an illegitimate coup into "the mountains" (where exactly is unknown). after the bronze age collapse, the Dorian Invasion (aka the return of the Heracletae) begins, where they take the Peloponnese back.
So, Sparta saw the helots are treasonous cowards who deserved what they got for the slights of their ancestors.
Despite this, Sparta was their home, just that they were forever forced to put down the lesser slaves. To the average city state, Sparta was just another state with slaves. Also, not many states knew much about the Spartans, since they were very isolationist.
And even if these states knew about it, the choices for a Greek city state is "thinks they're better than us" or "thinks they're better than us and is actively exploiting us"
And finally, the Spartans never really had a distinct desire to overextend and create a huge empire, as they saw the growth of their state to be detrimental to the control the Spartans had over the helots, like most apartheid states. Take, for example, what he says in the beginning: Sparta signed a treaty with Persia relatively soon. Meanwhile, Athens pursued a total victory. And consider what Sparta does with their total victory in this war (spoilers)
I hope this helps
I know this is real late. But WhatIfAltHist made an excellent video recently about the decline of Greece and Rome and mentioned Athenian atrocities such as this one. TLDR: the decline was a combination of declining religiosity, lower birthrates, and the hyper-rational worldview held by the Greeks. Heavily recommend his video.
Is there a reason why you use the word clay for city on the animation.
Clay bassicly means land.

it sometimes amazes me how similar the ancient world is to ours, especially compared to the medieval period.
