Hey brother, I’d love to treat you and your wife to lunch or dinner at Sassool on Strickland Rd in Raleigh. It’s a Middle Eastern restaurant that reminds me of home. After everything I’ve learned from you over the years, it feels like the least I could do. I’m only about 40 minutes away, and it would be an honor to finally meet you in person. I moved to Raleigh from NYC back in 2000, but I’m originally a Palestinian refugee. Like many other refugees, I spent time in Jordan, Egypt, and a few other places. When I watched your video yesterday and heard the story about you wearing a T-shirt with “refugee” on it, I was deeply moved-it really hit home. It’s amazing how small the world can be, brother!
Saint Petersburg Florida here...power is back on! My son kept three houses powered up with his dodge Cummins diesel that he swapped his alternator with a military generator from a hummer.. 1/2 gallon per hour fuel vs neighbors generators 1.5 + gal per hour...
That's fabulous news! So happy to hear how your son did that! I'm in NC, down in the piedmont. Western Carolinas damaged freaked me out. We got no damage here, but our 22KW home standby generator kicked on for 6 hrs. I began freaking out over Milton because my niece lives in Palm Coast,FL. Her dad died at home under home hospice care the day before Milton made landfall. He was a Nam vet. So nice to hear your happy story in the midst of so much sad news 🎉
Lived in Raleigh for about ten years. Running in October would be a treat. But try that from mid May until mid September and the humidity is gonna drown your lungs! 🥵
So, if the water pipes washed away, did the sewer pipes not wash away too? As in, when you get power back and your sewage pump kicks on, where is it going to end up? My family was lucky during Floyd about 20 years ago in eastern NC. We didn't flood; but we were somewhat trapped for a day or two. Then driving places was a puzzle and required a lot of out of the way driving to get to work.
The point of storing food is to 1) buy food your family will eat & 2) to cycle (eat/utilize) through it on a regular basis. Once an item is used, replace it. That way the food never expires and you're still stocked up. Old school rule: 2 is 1 and 1 is none.
I studied Computer Science because of you. During my teenage years, you were like a father figure to me. Now, I’m in my last year at FC UNAM, and I just wanted to say thank you for everything.
Damn dude, So sorry to hear about this. Come up north! Ohio is legit, it does get cold in the winter, but the cost of living is great and we have all the fresh water you need with the lakes. :)
Could you use a generator to run your sewage pump? Our house has a septic system with 2 tanks that pumps uphill to the field. You have me realizing that if power goes out that we need a way to run that pump!! Most of the neighbors have aerobic septic systems now vs their old septic lines. The septic field of lines doesn't last forever. So they all rely on electricity to power those aerobic systems. -- Or it's pooping in the woods.
Yes, he certainly could use a generator. If you want to prep for the worst, maybe hire an electrician to set up an "emergency" panel that you can run if the utility goes dead due to fire/flood/earthquake/hurricane etc. He can tell you what size generator you need for what you want to run in an emergency. Best to kno that before you buy a genny. also, try and buy a good one. And test it out every few months to make sure it's operational when you really need it.
Eli, Finally listen to your whole video. You’ll be fine. You’ve got the right attitude. Thanks for posting. I think it was a good public service. All the best to you and your Sewer pump.:-)
I live in Metro Detroit and our power infrastructure is awful here. It's worse than Texas and California if you factor in population. I lose power 3 or 4 times every year for at least a day each. Usually, it's multiple days. I lost power for 6 days a few months ago. It seems like we lose power every time the wind blows and everyone has generators here. To be fair, we also experience a lot of extreme weather because we are so far north, but that is really no excuse. Our infrastructure just sucks.
@@svenhoek yeah, I have a natural gas powered whole house generator. It can run on propane and gasoline as well. When my power goes out, I just have to start the generator and flip a switch on my electric panel.
Glad to see you didn't end up in the river bro! You're right about the research triangle and the 6 to 8 lane parking lots at rush hour. Once we're out of the news cycle and the elections have come and gone, we're paying for water, probably twice. As people start dropping from dysentery, the real-estate vultures that have been circling above for years will start landing in our neighborhoods. That was about 6 months of rain in 3 days, my friend in Swannanoa said when the flash flood came through, the river sounded like metal-on-metal cutting through the channel.
To not worrying about your trees now because they're all down. That's a reality. Here on the plains high winds are just part of it. Trees are stress tested regularly. We have them come down, yes, but they don't block every road in the area because they tend to come down one by one, storm by storm. Not all at once in a big storm. We still get screwed by snow load sometimes though. Your trees falling on lines is one tiny thing that will be better after this, for a while anyway.
Hey, I had that problem before where bowel movements and urination were a problem. I solved it by buying a little camping toilet but easier than that Cabela’s sells 5 gallon containers that come with a toilet seat and a lid you could make a bowel movement and urinate right into that bucket. There is a little deodorizing pouch that you could throw in there to neutralize the smell of the fecal and urinary materials. And then when it becomes halfway full, just dump it into the front yard or the backyard. Some of your vegetation will thank you because it’s free fertilizer.
Human waste can not be used as fertilizer for the most part as we eat terrible things, consume medicine, and have pathogens. There's a reason it's heavily regulated
Agreed many people lost sewage and water pipes depending how much the mountain collapses or the water and debris carried everything away. 😢water treatment plants probably majorly damaged too

There is nothing about the climate that humans really can change. You need to protect you. Solar panels would not help here Eli if your storm is violent high winds even if the solar panels don't fly off they will be hit by flying debris and potentially break. You need a house raised 1 story up and generator with switchgear to isolate your home from the public electric grid so your not powering the neighborhood. Having the generator higher up from the ground level and flooding is important too for just survival in place.
You need solar panels that arent attached to the roof. You can get folding pannels that are only for emergencies. They can provide enough for you to run a decent PC...
Humans can stop burning, fossil, fuels and employ, solar, wind and marine cloud, brightening technology to turn climate change around in 10 years if they want to. But yea no one can really plan for this stuff. When we got hit the first time I got a generator that was to small and my refrigerator broke it. Wish you all the best.

Buy a Generac 22KW home standby generator through your power company. Opt for the 500 gallon propane tank. Opt for the 5 yr service warranty. They'll come service the generator once per year, using their own oil formulated to prevent the milky, cottage cheese crap that forms in oil . DO NOT BUY THE 22KW GENERAC FROM THE BIG BOX STORES!. The power companies sell a beefier version of these generators. And power company service guys tend to stay with that power company . The big box stores' generator service guys do 2 yr service contracts, and when you need them, they're gone. Power company installs the generator. It'll come on automatically when power goes out, and it'll run a test cycle automatically once a week. You can utilize a manual program too. Then have a solar backup , because propane is expensive! Then, have solar backup
yea no one could have been prepared for that in your area. its like a once in a lifetime thing. and heres the thing. i remember when covid happened. like for a short hot second. i thought the world was going to end. i bought a giant tent cause i was like crap family might need to stay with us, i bought mres. didnt use the tent. the mres are basically past their 4 year shelf life. i do have a generator but i only bought it cause the stupid electric company a few years ago was going to do multiple days of work and i wroked from home. but have i used it really besides that one time. not really. like you can go the prepper route but your paying opportunity costs there.
to use your wording, "I hate to point out reality but", you don't buy mre's and then throw them away. You don't by a $500 generator and then ignore it for 10 years. You buy a generator or solar with battery back up and then use it once every few months. Turn off your utility power. Is everything working? What can you run? Water pump, sewer pump? freezer? oven? at the same time? Figure it out. KNOW what you're doing ahead of time. Eat some of your MRE's /canned goods /survival food once in a while. Replace as you go. You're a computer guy. what do you think of people who don't back up their data? Stupid, right? That climate change thing that you've been ignoring scientists about for decades? Wakey, wakey : ) You're super lucky that you have the mental capacity to easily understand the complexity of climate change and the solutions. Thankfully you're not a low iq guy who really can't tell the bs from the Keeling curve. Regarding solar /battery /inverter systems: find a NABCEP certified installer and check references before signing anything. There's some good ones out there in your area. The good ones will be busy but worth waiting for. Many will let you do some of the install and just help as needed. Thanks for posting your thoughts. Helps me understand how other people think. Maybe I'll be less of an A hole. If so it will be your fault : )

yea no one could have been prepared for that in your area. its like a once in a lifetime thing. and heres the thing. i remember when covid happened. like for a short hot second. i thought the world was going to end. i bought a giant tent cause i was like crap family might need to stay with us, i bought mres. didnt use the tent. the mres are basically past their 4 year shelf life. i do have a generator but i only bought it cause the stupid electric company a few years ago was going to do multiple days of work and i wroked from home. but have i used it really besides that one time. not really. like you can go the prepper route but your paying opportunity costs there.
can u run the sewer pump with the tesla
Got to look to the REAL 'spaghetti monster'.

those dang preppers did have a point... You must have an independent power source, otherwise you are triple wide fugged.
Where my daily blob????
39:42 Whoa, a town with nearly half of million people is more boring compared to a town with a ninety thousand?
It's messed up that you are in the last 24k without power in your county.. UGH. Hopefully soon man!
that's why solar is a must
Hope you are okay
7th. Grab a few car batteries and build solar system. Water trucks.
Cute thumbnail!
to use your wording, "I hate to point out reality but", you don't buy mre's and then throw them away.
Wakey, wakey : )
You're super lucky that you have the mental capacity to easily understand the complexity of climate change and the solutions.

Escape from reality seems temporary.
Raleigh is a nice city. Better parks than Asheville
Raleigh may be worth checking out I don’t have time for pretentious tech snark communities
Damn this guy is using the tRump weave method of public speaking.
His honesty is as un-"Trump like" as you can get.

cultur based on writing tend to remeber real old things, cultur of speaking based most of it 500 years and the last part is gone from real big events. Maybe concluson built in into ther ruleset.

Admit it, you're not a mountain man.
If I were you I would leave
Sustainability must be end to end.
please give us a practical example. Are you suggesting we keeping burning fossil fuels and destroy the environment instead of generating power with solar or wind? Are you waiting for perfection while we add greenhouse gases every day?
