I use my 8085's at work when I know I am going to have a light day. I do custodial and light maintenance on one of the biggest high schools here where I live. On my busy days I walk between 8 to 10 miles on hard surfaces. On those days is when I wear my Nick's Builder Pro's. Much more support and comfort. It is a tank of a boot.
I've heard a lot of good things about nicks. And whites too. I'm looking at getting some sort of boot from whites with a good lug sole on it for winter time
@@NathanKnepper White's Smokejumper is a hell of a boot. Nick from Nick's Boots started at White's before he started his own boot company. You can not go wrong with either boot and the customization to get the look you want is pretty sweet.
I'm looking at the smokejumper classic with the redish colored roughout leather. Probably a March/April purchase and if I do but them they'll definitely be a review up on the channel
Yes, there is no Poron used inside, veg tanned leather insole and cork filler. The cloth in the vamp area is called cotton drill, not denim. Good review!
I have the Iron Ranger. Not sure on my next boot though. The Thursday Vanguard you have really looked good. Its funny that I don't really need more boots but I still want to collect more.
The Vanguards are awesome. I also really like Mark Albert's boots as they're made locally in my hometown. I should have a review of the Uptown model out in a few weeks. Whites also makes a wide range of very durable boots. Oak Streets are pretty solid too but imo they're a little too pricey for what you get. Still very nice though. I don't have any experience with Trueman's but I've heard very nice things about them!
Thanks for the info! I feel like I've heard that word used before to describe them but I guess I didn't put two and two together. I used redwings boot oil at first and that made them somewhat dark and then I tried using mink oil. The mink oil kept them pretty waterproof but it seemed to wear off rather quickly. The last time I cleaned them I used smiths leather balm and they turned out pretty nice. There's just a little of the leathers original color surfacing here and there which I like
@@NathanKnepper Heard smokejumpers are great. I have Nicks Builder pro and the break in times is killing me. Nicks also just released a new boot the Tanker pro that looks amazing.
Nice review. Great that you are using them for work! They look great. One thing… I don’t get this blister and pain trying to brake those boots. I really don’t. I owe several pairs of heritage boots. Mac toe boots I use for work. I have 1907 and 875. I also have irons. I yet to have any “horror” stories about braking any of this boots. This is maybe a useful tip for all of you. I go to the store and spend good 30 min to an hour trying to pick the right pair. I usually come to a Red Wong store wearing my Iron Rangers so stuff knows that I’m a serious customer and I already own a pair. So…. They have no problem getting me, three and four pairs just to try those boots and walk in them for several minutes looking for any painful spots. When you get a stitch that is hearting you badly after just few steps, get another pair. Do this until you get tight pair but without any ruff spots. My boots brake in a week. No problems! Seriously. If it takes you weeks or months to brake those boots you either got them over the internet or you didn’t spend time making sure you got right pair
I work in a backroom and move almost all day long, can get close to a marathon in steps on a really bad day moving freight and the such. Would these be a good pick?
Get em past the break-in and they’ll be some of the best boots you’ve ever worn. Whites MP Shermans with the dainite half sole would also be a good pick
I’ve worn mine every day for work as an exterminator for almost 2 years and they are ok. I do a ton of walking on the job. Up and down stairs all day, going from apartment to apartment. I have a cheap pair of Nikes that are way more comfortable if im honest. My soles wore out pretty quick and I need new ones. This hype about them being this ultra comfortable boot and you’ll never want anything else I just didn’t find to be true. The inside has no cushioning and it feels like you are always walking on a hard surface. They look good new and shined up but other than that, they are just boots.
They’re going to be uncomfortable regardless of the sizing simple because the cork and leather needs to break in. I purchased size 9 and am a brannock size 10. If I were to order again I would get size 9.5
Yes I used redwings boot oil and mink oil on them a few times. That plus constantly being in an environment full of grease, oil, gasoline, and dirt has made them darker. Recently I cleaned them with saddle soap and used smiths leather balm on them. Managed to recover some of the color. If you wear these for carpentry or a job that only has you in contact with dirt/dust and don't need them to be waterproofed with mink oil products they'll develop amazing patinas.
@@NathanKnepper right on, man. Thanks. I own a tire/mechanic shop- was wanting to darken them up a little bit. Wasn’t sure if they would continue to get darker the more you used the mink oil
The leather breaks in quickly from my experience but the insole being cork and leather takes while to be truly comfortable. Especially if you're on your feet for 8-10 hrs a day
Hi, I watched your vloges. I sized down half size and bought the Thursday boots Captan(burnt copper) in size 7 US, but it was little snug/tight esp in the tip portion of my foot. I wear size 7.5 US size in sneakers, now I am interested in buying the Redwing Ironranger 8111, so what size should I go for? Should I go for size US 7.5??? Please advise 🙏
I’ve had the same problem honestly. If I was to get the captains again I would try them in size 10 as that front toe cap can really pinch some peoples feet. Almost all of my other boots are size 9.5 but my iron rangers are actually size 9. They fit just a tad small so personally I would get them again in size 9.5
The iron ranger will have a much more roomier toe box and should accommodate your foot quite well. I would recommend seeing what the return policy is and making sure not to crease them or anything in case they don’t fit well

Engineer here, 50/50 field/office job. Sometimes I have to be in farms where there is rainfall accumulation, mud, etc. Would these boots keep my feet protected from that? The other option I'm considering are muck boots, but I'd be switching boots once I'm out in the field and switch them back once I drive to the office. So what's your opinion? $350 for these or muck boots? Thank you in advance.
If you’re not opposed to a higher price I would 100% recommend a PNW style boot. Whites Smokejumper, Nicks Builder Pro, any of the JK boot style, or Trumans Uplands (which I personally own). It sounds like you need some solid footwear. It also depends on what you’ll be doing. Will you be down in some serious muck fixing things? Or will you just be observing things? You might be fine with a pair of muck boots if you’re not going to be performing serious physical labor. Maybe in the future you could then get a pair of rangers or other goodyear welted boots for the office
@@NathanKnepper thank you for the great suggestions. What I do in the field is mostly observation, data collection, sometimes topo, nothing crazy. Thank you again.
@@NathanKnepper Im in the same boat as you. Pretty sure I sized all of my red wings incorrectly. Size 10.5D brannock but went with 9.5EE on all of my iron rangers. Are they uncomfortable? That sounds like a good plan. The only boots I’ve had that fit perfectly at size 9.5 are my Whites MP Shermans, mark albert uptowns, and my spruce kudu parkhursts
Yes the welt has separated some on the sides due to the way I work in them. I'm a powersports mechanic so I'm always squatting down to work on things which puts a LOT of pressure on the area where the toe cap is sewn to the rest of the boot. I've bent the toe box nearly 90° to the rest of the boot at times. In terms of performance I honestly haven't noticed it at all. They still seem to have around the same level of water resistance (which isn't a whole lot). I think the separation is mostly due to the vibram 430 sole not having a lot of tread which causes it to wear down into the welt stitching and then due to squatting and the pressure over the front of the boot it ends up separating. I plan on getting mine resoled with a bigger lug sole at some point in the future
Some boots recess the stitching or they have a taller lug profile on them. Not too much of an issue on boots when they're worn for casual wear / fashion but obviously rigorous use in a work environment will take its toll.
In my experience from using the 8083s in my trade, they are durable as hell, more durable and repairable than dedicated work boots in fact. However there are just better options for work in terms of comfort and protection.
Yes they are very durable! They do lack protection, especially when considering the lack of any sort of steel or composite toe, and also lack of any sort of traction on the sole. As for comfort I find that much like mattresses different people like different stiffness in their footwear. Personally I like a stiffer more ridgid shoe that fits to my foot.
