Dr. Fraad at her best. I recommend folks read Engels' book, 'Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State'. It is so enlightening on so many levels. Some of the earliest forms of PRIVATE property (as opposed to socially owned collective property) was a man's wife and children. The Right Wing is trying to send us back to that way of thinking.
It's shocking to hear how heartless parents were to their children in early times. Nowadays such behaviour would fall under the category of sociopathy or psychopathy. It is just eery. I am so relieved that there are people like you and your husband.
It still happens. Just look around at the adults, especially the MAGA cult, I personally know some horrible people who were just gutless and awful to their children, who grew up to be the most unproductive US citizens, among so many. From pedophiles, to rapists, and the like in between. Especially rural America and what we call urban areas or the ghettos (not to be confused with the Jewish ghettos of the 1950s and so on.).
We're not, and have never been, a developed country. Most people still think it's ok to hit their kids, which is completely barbaric. Hurting your own child is the worst violence there is.
"The Disappearance of Childhood" 1994 by Neil Postman is an excellent book on the history of the creation of modern childhood and how childhood is being dismantled. Thank you Dr. Fraad for an excellent needed talk about the rapidly changing world of work in the U S.
Equal parts are devastating to learn and fascinating. We _really_ aren't taught these bits of labor history, but honestly, this is just history...it applies to all of us, not just grad students in the social sciences. Thanks so much for covering this!
Listening to Dr Fraad describe how the USA struggles to feed children in our chronically exploited communities, even as it tosses over thirty percent of its food ,I'm reminded of Rosa Luxumberg's observation that mankind's choice is "between Socialism and Barbarism."Res Ipsa Loquitur.
It's amazing to me that in the 21st century people are still turning to the philosophies written by bronze age people who didn't even know that North America existed, and yet think that the mysteries of the universe are explained in their "holy" books.

Such an excellent post. Notice Abraham wasn’t made to murder his son, but his “loving god” demanded an innocent animal still die. The Hebrew temple system demanded the slaughter of thousands of helpless animals a year. Such an interesting belief system.
The points in this video are valid, but my experience as a parent is on the other end of the spectrum. Here in NY, it was very difficult for my daughter to find a summer job when she was 15 and wanted to work (to save up for a car and have her own spending money). She was not legally old enough to pour hot coffee or use a soft serve ice cream machine, she could bus tables at the local pizzeria but not do the higher paid job of waiting tables. Im glad we have labor laws here, it just also is a struggle when kids are transitioning into adulthood, want to work and have their own money, but the restrictive laws make it difficult for them to ease into working.
What more proof do you need to convince yourself that the current and past madness can only be partially attenuated by embracing our common species needs and abandoning the fiction of individualism forever. Everyone should study the social history of the world to eliminate the constant fantasizing about family life and childhood. Great presentation and in a nutshell to boot.
Excellent historical analysis. For those interested read the book "Capitalism, the family and personal life" by Eli Zerensky. In that book the economics of childhood is looked at within a critique of the capitalist system
It took me a long time to understand why Europeans were so cruel to virtually any civilization they ever met, and I think I got my answer from studying the historical living conditions of Europe, briefly alluded to by Dr. Fraad, which also explain why they were as cruel among themselves. In much of the rest of the world, your biggest threat was some predator or some disease against which a fellow human, if not a tribe nearby, was your best hope. In Europe, your biggest threat was the tribe if not the human nearby. The effects of this on the cultures are still visible today.
ALL humans behave this way your "much of the rest of the world" analysis is incorrect look into any culture and you'll see the same behavior I wish it wasn't true

I'm going to say it, abortions would have been better options than the horrors Fraad has spoken of. Makes me wonder what will happen to the unwanted children in the U.S.?
Sartre rightly complained in "Search for a Method" that our comrades prior to him hadn't bothered to reckon with kids, although we know Marx himself was fantastic with kids. In the West, Christians have a lot to answer for in regards to kids and they didn't think twice about shoving their kids into mines and factories. I have nothing polite to say to anyone who considers or treats their children like property, nor should any comrade. Kids are NOT pets or trophies, either, nor should they be fetishized as so many people are wont to do.
Where do we go to form one cohesive socialist 3rd party so we can get going immediately?? Bernie, AOC, the squad style.. But where specifically do we all go so we can focus our efforts under the same broad umbrella for all?
You have a fine mind and a good soul.
Love your work
Thank you Harriet. I have learned a ton from watching this series of videos. We deserve so much more.

What if the idea of the nuclear family was an evil thing. Only in such social organizations could you think of children in that way.
After watching this , I would never have thought that America was a developed country.
The dirty underbelly of the seedy little cut-rate carny contradicts the soundbites of 'modern' society

I agree. It's a prison for the mind.

It shows the infantilism and foolishness of 'the modern world'.
Reluctance to face reality is causing most our problems imo. Even a lot of cruelty would end if people couldn't rationalize away their bad behavior.
Thanks.

Human history is absolutely disgusting.
It is the history of class struggle.

Good. They shouldn't have to transition into working until after four years of free, taxpayer-funded college anyway.

They'll end up as slaves, or in the stewpot, depending on how hard the ongoing collapse ends up being.
@@alandoane9168 Well considering, we can barely get a rocket off the ground...
I knew that about the name Esposito. I was horrified when I first learned its derivation.
Hate how much reactionary propaganda is shoved in my reccomendeds on this video.
Childhood protection has been very progressive in France past WWII but you would be horrified how it is greatly undermined by neo-management policies.
Honestly anarchists secretly or openly should run as democrats at local levels.
I've been saying it for a while - lefties need to infiltrate the right as much as they infiltrate our groups.

They love fetuses but have little use for children.
History horror: that word "sacrifice" was used instead of "murder." Ethos needs to include child care.

It could be very bad
Introduce child marriage
Child marriage is one of the greatest human evils of all time.
