I have seen a fair amount of disconnection in and out of the work place. I believe it paramount to always acknowledge people - everyone. But not everyone practices this. Some in our society have a scarcity attitude, although they themselves are doing quite well. They do not want to extend a gram of good emotion and care for another person. Some have forgot (or sold off) their ability to be a gentle human being.
This disconnection has nothing to do with capitalism. Man has the illusion, that being social in an absolutely overcrowded living environment like these we have today is still possible. Which it's not, being surrounded by thousands over thousands of strangers with the weirdest possible problems and often times the biggest threat potentials for oneself can't be solved by any economic or political system. We are just too many in a too small space crammed together. And it all started to develop on the basis of mistrust, anyways. So, mankind has to take a break, stop everything and make a good long and hard thinking about what it should do next. But it hasn't the ability anymore.. I can't even communicate with my neighbours anymore, that live with me under the same roof, with them misunderstanding everything i do or say.
Thank you, I found this a very insightful analysis! I especially liked your explanation of how the exploitative class relations in capitalism have ramifications on broader psychological and social contexts.
I've thought that the ethos of narcissism and psychopathy engendered by capitalism is what's pervasively harming our society too. But what I have trouble understanding is that, at the end of the day, it's ultimately everybody's choice how they act. While they might be brought to the crossroads of that ethos and mentality by the systems around them, nobody's forcing them to choose it and become sh-tty human beings. And I would count a real majority of people have chosen to become sh-tty human beings. Why do they so easily make that choice?
I honestly believe the main reason people behave in such a monstrously way is because we are the only species that polices murder/killing. They know there isn't any consequences for doing it. Look all through out human history about the policing of who has the "right" to kill and who doesn't. Women have always been forced to not be angry or retaliate, but supposedly human women are "naturally" docile. Look at how people don't want people to stand up to oppression whether it's racial, financial, sexual, you get it. If more people were scared of retaliation especially if it would extend to their families, communities, countries a lot of this would come to an end.

This is actually a valid point that many people are unwilling to acknowledge. Simply put, it's hypocrisy. There are victim-perpetrator complexes playing out in fractals. The people in France (or any powerful first-world nation) have perpetrators making victims of their own population. But then you can zoom out and those same victims are part of a larger group of perpetrators who victimize third-world nations. There is a need to face the hypocrisy and demand consistency. I agree that there is a need to lose the self-shame. However, it does no good to blame the perpetrator for the victim's self-shame. At a certain point, victims must be willing to stand up for themselves or nothing will change. Truth is, the perpetrators are shamed by society too, _prior_ to the actual crime, and perhaps in accordance with the capitalistic expectations you pointed out. This does no good either, as that shame builds up and creates the perpetrators who commit the crimes. Bottom line, self-shame and shaming or blaming others is no path to a solution in any circumstance. The moment you shame yourself, you justify the crimes your perpetrator. The moment you shame or blame someone else, the perpetrator you're pointing at adopts a victim mindset, and the victim mindset creates perpetrators. Forgiveness is the only way to resolve the vicious cycles. Even the worst perpetrators in history were once innocent victims.
Thank you for pointing out that women should merely defend themselves from rapists. Where have you been for the last millenia? @@gardenwitchtarot First of all, I made no mention of women in my comment, and that was on purpose. Men are victims too, and I do not seek to create division among victims. That is the basis of every divide and conquer strategy, and it diminishes the power of the victims to the benefit of the perpetrators. Yet, your response reframed my comment as if I was speaking about women exclusively. I can only ask you to reflect on why it is that you created a strawman. Maybe I was unclear. Victims must be willing to deny the self-shame that so often keeps them from going to authorities. Laws exist in first-world nations that protect victims better than ever before. Are those laws perfect? No. But if victims are too busy shaming themselves to take advantage of that justice system, then the punishments for crimes don't materialize and perpetrators have less incentive to obey those laws. In reality, the entire reason that we have laws protecting victims is because at some point in the past, strong victims had the courage to stand up for themselves and refused to shame themselves. If victims today refuse to be as strong as those past victims, then they will be more likely to be victimized. Dare I say it, the laws themselves will even regress if victims choose to shame themselves. "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." I not only encourage victims to seek justice and deny self-shame, but I also encourage people to take proactive measures to avoid victimization. Proactive measures include improving one's fight and flight reactions, as well as avoiding dangerous scenarios whenever possible. The nature of those proactive measures today put more power in the hands of victims than ever before. My comment was ultimately an attempt to discourage self-shame among victims. I also highlighted how shaming others creates victims who sometimes become perpetrators. If you want to make an argument against that sentiment, go ahead, but I will not address your strawman.
