  • In the second installment of our interview with David Ifft, David tells all when it comes to his salary negotiation with M.C. Anderson, after which he become the first crew chief on record to be paid more than $100,000 a year. He also gives us the scoop on why M.C. started having his employees followed by a private investigator.
    David also remembers lending a helping hand to Richard Petty and Dale Inman the week of the 1979 Daytona 500 and getting an extraordinarily rare Richard Petty mug … cough … cough … in return. Finally, he talks about the hand-shake sponsorship deal between M.C. Anderson and Harry Melling, as well as the trickery and deal making that led to Benny Parsons’ win in the 1980 World 600 at Charlotte.
    Full disclosure … there is some background noise during parts of the interview. We’ve located the problem, and it won’t happen again.

    Man, what a great session. I suspect there's more to come. He tells some stories, but for those like me, who was a kid/teen watching these names he's throwing out there, they are amazing stories that really should be shared.
    Loved the part about Benny, he absolutely was the guy you thought he was. A lot like Harry Gant, the nice guy racer all the way through. Throw Kenny Schrader in there as well.
    Great stories and the list of names who would become superstars behind the wall, in the shop and on the box. I mean, who didn't he name? LOL!!! What a journey this guy has had.

    You know this is getting ready to go off the rails when Henry benfield gets in the story I wish you guys an interview Michael and Henry sometime I would love to hear those stories I was so lucky to grow up a Nascar fan in the late seventies in mid-80s the Golden age of NASCAR

    That story of the cracked head reminds me of my late model days. I was in a 100 lap feature with a busted head gasket and the motor kept getting hot but then a caution would come out just in time to let it cool down. I’d worked myself all the way up to 2nd when the last caution came out so there was a shoot out for the win. I was so happy to just finish 2nd in my first big race and being down in HP that I didn’t try that hard to win. I’ve always regretted that decision. Wish I had tried a little harder. May not have had the HP to win but I had a shot on the restart with 5 to go.

    The Late Great Bob Glidden sent Jack Roush to stock cars. Bob would dominate with the equipment he bought from Jack. And dominated for nearly twenty years before a rules change to the Boss 429 engines put the gm cars ahead of him. Jack Roush built a great organization.

    Fellows you need to talk with my uncle Sam sommers. My uncle was 36 when he made it to Cup. Uncle Sam had 2 top fives, 1,pole. Numerous top 10s. Buddy Baker didn't do much better. .

    No disrespect to buddy Baker. But ask Bobby allison, Donnie allison, David Pearson when he was alive, Cale yarborough. Who was the better race car driver. They will tell you Sam Sommers was twice the racecar driver buddy Baker was. If fact was known David ifft screwed Sam Sommers out of his ride in the 27.

    Get. Sam Sommers on. You will hear a different story

    • @craigparrish3582
      @craigparrish3582 2 роки тому

      True. Wasn't 46 or 48 years old when he made to cup. Also he was blindside by getting let go by M.C. if the car would have held up and given one more year. Would have won some races. 2 weeks before M.c let him go . Said nobody would ever drive 27 but Sam Sommers.
