This 1963 Plymouth Sport Fury was about as close to a drag-ready race car as you could buy from a dealer in '63. Besides its no-nonsense appearance, this car came equipped with the 426 Max Wedge Super Stock V8, a powerful competition engine boasting 11.1:1 compression and an advertised 415 HP at 5600 RPM. The dual-quad "short ram" intake, high-lift cam, free flowing exhaust, manual trans, Sure Grip differential, and a lack of accessories helped these cars stack up records in Super Stock drag racing. This one is from the Brothers Collection.

When everyone talks about old cars they always talk about how simple they looked or how great the carburetors were but nobody talks about the beautiful steering wheels and gauges.
I was lucky enough to get a ride in one like this when it was brand new. In 63, i was impressed and ended up working at Chrysler engineering in 68. Mopar baby.
I was lucky enough to rebuild 1 of these for a customer.
He has a 440 6bbl Road Runner, a 340 6 pack T/A CHALLENGER, A 340 6 BBL AAR CUDA AND A 71 HEMI CHARGER I HAD WORKED ON THEM ALL AND ONE DAY HE TOWED ONE OF THESE IN AND ASKED ME IF I COULD/WOULD DO A BUILD FOR HIM.
I told him i absolutely can but..... There are guys that probably are still around that have built them before if you want me to find one?
He luckily said " no, i would like you to build it" He then said i trust you with my HEMI CAR so why not this one??
I was so freaking glad.
I ended up building it back in 06 and he still brings it to the strip 5 or 6 times a year and every Sunday there is no snow or salt on the roads you can see him driving on Lake Shore Drive from the North to the Stevenson Express way, out to La Grange and back.
About 55 miles every Sunday.
Man i love seeing him pull in with it.

Never been so happy but nervous when i started a car before and honestly.... Never been so excited when it fired right up.
Except my first engine maybe. I was 14 yrs old and my grandfather took a 440 apart after a couple yrs of me helping him and listening and watching him and told me.... " BUILD IT"
He said if it starts i have something for you.
It started.
That something?? I still have and im 53.
It was his all original numbers matching RT/SE 1970 CHARGER 440 MAGNUM.
I nearly had a stroke.
We never got along good but compared to his 6 kids and other grandkids i was the only one that would stay near him.
Glad i did, i became a mechanic( which i still am) got the RT , bought a 69 4406bbl Road Runner and rebuilt that and by 25years old had both cars in mint condition and opened a garage in Chicago.
He may have been a jerk to us but he gave me the 2 things i love in life more than anything except my mom, gram and family ( wife 2 kids) he gave me the charger and my career.
That also turned into 33 yrs of Racing mopar products!

In late 1962 & early 1963. I lived in Riverside, California on Benecia Drive. These was a Black 1963 Fury across the street. I knew very little about hot rods at 13 years old. I heard him start the car one day (open headers) and I walked across the street to see & hear this. I remember seeing the Orange intake manifold with two carburetors. It sounded good, and he let me sit in the drivers seat (motor not running or course) and I remember the push button automatic. I liked what I saw and heard, and have liked street machines (not muscle cars) ever since. Never owned one of these, but a few GTO's and even ran one of the Mickey Thompson Pontiac cross rams on a 1967 GTO. They were very similar to the Mopar cross ram. We had to modify the cross ram to fit the later Pontiac heads. I had a lot of fun in the 1960's through the early 1980's. I wish I knew who that was that had the 426 Max Wedge across the street that stated all my love for drag racing...
Very nice come back after the shrunk down 1962 models. The '63 and '64 are my favorites.
I believe Dodge also put the Max Wedge in the 330 in '63, Beautiful car...
Definitely my kinda "MOPOP"! The 426 dual quad wedges would run with the best of them. Many thanks for sharing with us all. A well preserved beautiful classic muscle car if there ever was one!

Don't mistake this Max wedge intake manifold for the Cross Ram intakes...there was both a short and long ram version of the earlier Cross Rams/Sonoramics.

This is in my memory. I got a ride in one like this when it was new. Funny I ended up working at Chrysler performance engineering.

this engine was so damn good it impressed the hell outa many racers back in the day, not the least of which was the man himself: Big Daddy Don Garlits.
Garlits used the HEMI, not the Max Wedge.

I like all cars,& I have had a lot of them , some really rare, a mustang fox owner now,but! I gotta say when u own an old mopar there is just something about them, u kinda go mopar, & I did for Quite a while. Much respect for them, great video keep'em coming thanks.

Real nice car and a good presentation! I can't figure out why some folks call the GTO the first muscle car; I think that was just a marketing ploy......very wrong, there were SO many cars before the GTO that could smoke it.......the competition for horsepower started back in 55 with the Chrysler 300. That car actually started the ball rolling, as you notice that horsepower ratings and cubic inches increased quite drastically over time among the big three.
Bought one brand new from Milne Bros in Pasadena, Black/red/ push button auto, God damn it was fun

It was a basic, simple brutal engine.
That 13 1/2 compression ratio engine was really cool. Heck the "LOW" COMPRESSION ENGINE Was amazing as well.
If you know how to tune a Race HEMI OR STREET HEMI IT WILL beat the 426 MW BUT........ its a big one too BUT.... You not only be able to tune the HEMI the right way which ones you learned its temperamental settings and parts you were good to go IF you did some things either before everyday you raced or weekend you ran.
There were things like CHANGE THE DAMN PLUGS!!! I knew a couple guys with HEMI'S. And they would change plugs as often as a 318 would. Not a great idea if you want an awesome running HEMI.
Then you want to always adjust the carbs. After awhile with that monster ENGINE and those Dual's you would adjust the carbs by ear very quick but it needed to be done alot.
The timing was another key.
You needed to do this and a couple more little things VERY OFTEN. If you did and got good at it... You most likely had a HEMI THAT WOULD NOT ONLY TAKE A BEATING BUT...... YOU WOULD ON THE STRIP 98% OF THE TIME IF YOU DID THISE THINGS AND KEPT IT UP. IN ANOTHER WORDS, DID'NT GET LAZY. 1 WEEK , GET IT DONE, THE NEXT 3 WEEKS SAY FORGET IT , LETS JUST RUN. THEN YOUR HEMI MAY HAVE A FEW "OFF" DAYS 😀😤

@@soxfunny98 I too was lucky enough to help out on a '62 Plymouth 413 Max Wedge and race it -- wasn't as pretty as this Dodge but sure was fast. AAAAAAhhhhh the memories. It sure is nice that the Brothers share their collection with us with Kevin hosting. Awesome!!!!
@@colin6769 this is a 63 Sport Fury. PLYMOUTH.. it's not a dodge.
In 63 I had the Fury and in 64 I got the polara and both had the wedge head but the 64 came with a nice console and buckets, the 63 was black and red trim and the 64 was two tone blue and white. I traded that motor out for the hemi thinking it would go right in but it took me like forever to make mounts for the engine build a scatter shield over the flywheel. I crashed that one and I mean stuffed it in a bank and that ground didn't give but the engine was right beside me with the four speed busted all to heck.
So basic and so "brutal" at the same time. :)

Vintage Mopars like this projected a no-nonsense, even slightly sinister aura of speed without decoration that to purists represented the ultimate muscle car aesthetic. And Chrysler stuck to this spartan approach through the coming glory years, its ultimate expression of austere design and industry-beating performance being, IMO, the late-60s big-engined Road Runners. They were the anti-GTO Judge.
As much as I love the purity of those cars, I think this ‘63 is just so bad-ass and almost unknown, that were I able to own a single classic Mopar, this would edge out the rest of them. It’s got to be the ultimate sleeper. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, and thanks to the curators of the collection you draw your weekly cars from for having such a discerning eye.
I'm a Mopar guy and to me the ultimate Mopar muscle car I would want to own is either one of these Max Wedge cars or a 66 Belvedere 1,the most basic model Plymouth offered that year, with the 426 Hemi, 4 speed, and 4.10 rear end. With plain steelies and dog dish caps. I also prefer sleepers to the later Mopars with bright colors, graphics, and spoilers. But I love all muscle cars from that era, even Ford and GM cars, specifically Pontiac.
I had the same color but mine was a Torqueflite AND....had a radio and a heater from the factory with complete docs.
This very well might be the car that Mr Tubbs son, Tommy Tubbs raced back in the day. Tommy, Tonky Murphy (Lincoln/Mercury) and Pam Alderson (Alderson Cadillac) all had Fathers that owned car dealerships back in the day and we all went to Lubbock High School graduating in 1964, 1965 and 1966.

I beg to differ with you on the 1st muscle car. Both the Pontiac and the Mopar you are featuring make my heart beat fast but look at the ford 427 thunderbolt option - another grade level.
Can't picture one of these in my mind without a pair of cheater slicks on them. Nice video. Great era for cars.
Trust me, there are "today" hot rodders who don't know what "cheater slicks" were. 🙂
I remember having to jack up the rear axle with a floor jack ... no jack stands were required back then 😬 ... and use the engine to rotate the rear tires while using a "cheese" grater to narrow the tread of tires that had several runs on them until they could pass the 7" maximum width "wet tire rolled across paper" test performed by NHRA Stocker Tech.
"Plymouth on the move" was the sloagan of the NEW way.

My dad use to take me and my brother and sister to school everyday in one exactly like the one in the video Black with red interior his also was a four speed he had the car until 1984 someone from Walter P Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills Michigan bought it needless to say we were never late for school

I have owned several. But back in the mid to late 80’s. I bought a FENNER TUBBS ‘64 Dodge high compression aluminum front battery in trunk ROLLER in West Texas. It was painted black at the time. I was one of a few at the time who knew how to decode these cars. We got the car in the shop and took it apart. The perfect original upholstery was under black covers. And a broadcast sheet was found in the back seat. This car was a one year only 50th Anniversary Gold, white sweep, 440 HARD TOP - unusual, radio delete BUT had a heater, 13.5:1 426, aluminum front, battery in the trunk. The steering wheel was perfect. The car was restored to exact factory specs. It sold to FL well before it was done. If you know these cars, this one is an odd duck!!

Of all the cars in the collection, this is the one I would pick... but I have 5 cats, a master's degree and an empty bank account. Ahhhh. Just the font on the dials is incredible. I like how they go all original on these cars especially with the exhaust and not those horrible chrome exhaust extensions.

I had a '62 Michigan State Troopers car, I don't know what motor it came with someone took the original motor and put a 383 Magnum in it it was still fast, pure positive traction.
i always thought the 62 409/409 belair deserved to be the first musclecar but any early 60`s car was magnificent!

Plenty of high performance 50s cars wore fuel injection, multiple carbs, or super charging. The early 60s cars were just an extension of the 50s cars. The 50s cars were just getting around to exploring hi performance technology being used in the 1930s.

My cousin and I were invited to ride along in my uncle's new 62 Chevy 409, 4spd bubble top. We wore no seatbelts, of course, and us two little boys bounced around in the back seat like pinballs as he ran through the gears. Monstrous torque.

Do The Brothers have any AFX Dodges that ran in the early '70's with an altered wheelbase? I remember seeing a couple of them at a drag strip as a young fella and seeing them lay down some very impressive times in the quarter mile. If I remember correctly, the Dodge Boys were pretty secretive about what was under the hood and i believe a lot of experimental research was done with these cars. If my memory serves me correctly, I got a peek under the hood of one of them and saw a wonderful cross-ram set-up with the four-barrels sitting clear in the back corners of the engine compartment. If anyone remembers/has info I'd sure like to hear about it as I am an old guy and my memory isn't so hot these days. The cars I am trying to recall were called "Factory Experimental", I believe. Thanks for the info. Now that I research my memory I did see one back about '64 on a strip in NE and the carbs were not in the back of the engine compartment (saw that on the street) but, rather had the short-ram set up like the one featured here. Fantastic weight-transfer and very loud.
You should look up the 1962 Dart with a 413. Talk about early muscle cars... right there in the early 60s all of the automotive American manufacturers were getting pretty serious with big engines and dual carbs

My grandfather was a mopar guy and my uncles and me i grew up in the 60s and 70s so luckily had great cars around me.
Loved every.minute of it.
Yes the cars are faster today and drive nicer. There was just something about those older mopars that were a blast to drive, race and build.

I had a 64 sport fury 383 four barrel 4 speed. It would fly.
I almost got a used one for my 16th birthday. It had 2 nhra stickers on it. Probably would have got it but when I hit 2nd gear it pulled the front wheels off the ground and my dad refused to allow me to get it.
Dodge and Plymouth were made by Chrysler but not the same car. The hottest car was a dodge named “Color Me Gone”.
That was Roger Lindamood's car.

Looks so low key but man what a sleeper.
Using drum brakes front and rear had an advantage beyond saving money so they were used in some muscle cars even into the late 60s: The shoes don't rub on the drums when the brakes are not applied so they don't have any inherent drag like disc brakes do. It's worth a tenth or two in the quarter mile.
Beautiful car, but is would have had full Sport Fury hub caps (which don't look as good as those small ones). Another interesting fact is that aluminum manifold with carbs weighs less than an empty cast iron single four manifold.

I was 16 then and i really started paying attention to horsepower and was there some horsepower going around. LOL 415 hp for the max wedge was a joke -- prob more like 515. Some goooooood times back then. Looking back tho it's a miracle most of us made it thru with such crap brakes and rubber behind so much power.

Some folks say the 55 chrysler 300 is the 1st muscle car... hemi why not
I think it is the first. The 55 Chrysler 300 and Dodge D-500 were the first American cars to make 300 horsepower since Duesenberg in 1928. Some say the 49 Olds Rocket 88 is the first. They were really fast for their day but they only had 180 horsepower. Not really muscle car type numbers in my book. The early 50s Hudson Hornets were fast too until 1955 when the new Chrysler 300 started dominating NASCAR.

Those slicks are definitely "wrinkle wall' based upon the footage of the sidewall. A lot of straight line traction there but I certainly would not want to do much cornering with them. That sidewall is very thin. Were they available in the early 60's?
I never understood the '64 gto claim either.
Is this the 11 to 1 or the 13.5 to 1 version?
It would look good with 6 additional inches of tire width in the rear.
