  • Here's one we don't see every day, BW Model 8 out of a 1958 Packard.
Problem is the car will not move unless it runs and warms up for about 30 minutes. This is due to hard seals throughout this transmission as you will see in the video. Haven't overhauled one of these for about 20 to 25 years. Thanks for watching and everyone please stay safe.

Really great to see this unit Gary! If it lasts another 62 years none of us will be around to see the next rebuild! Love seeing these older units! Amazing how compact this 3 speed unit is. Great video.

Thanks for sharing Gary. The first automatic transmission I did was a 1956 Fordomatic. The car was only a few years old. Basically the same trans as this one you're doing here.
Two pumps, fully adjustable bands, mostly thrust washers instead of bearings, and cast iron.
    Stay safe,
    Bill

Very vintage classic Unit wow. Part of the work for the 1958 Packard restoration.
Borg warner has had quite a bit of history too. They supplied some of there parts to some ford automatic transmissions, They also had a joint venture with Aisin-Warner up until 1987, and They made some Borg Warner BW35 automatic transmissions for some British classics and for some classic volvo's like the p1800 and the 140 series.

Also the Aisin-Warner transmissions that were made which were in collaboration with Borg warner were the volvo AW55, BW55, AW70, and AW71's were also made by toyota too.
      AW55= Toyota A40, AW70= Toyota A42D, and AW71= Toyota A43D
The AW4 in the 1987-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ's were also made by Toyota, The AW4 is also known as the Toyota A340.

Looks pretty much just like the FX cruise o matic I'm rebuilding right now out of my 64 galaxie. Nice to see a transmission guy do a teardown and not throw and slam everything into a pile for once. Nice!

@@GaryFerraro I do have a question regarding the steel and clutches I got with my transtar rebuild kit. The steels in the new kit were .062" thick and the original steels in the rear drum were .082" thick.
I was able to fit another steel and fiber clutch for a total of 4 each where originally there was only 3 each
Best I can tell I have between .035-.040" clearance between the top fiber and the thick retainer plate not putting any pressure on the clutch pack. The new and old steels were a concave type and I have them all going the same way as the origins came out. It air checks good and locks up really tight when I air check it, so it should work good but am wondering is this intentional with the kit to get another clutch in the rear clutch pack? Front clutch pack was virtually wear free and I got the same clutch pack thickness as what came out and it air checks good so no concern there.

@@GaryFerraro I got the transmission fully assembled today and it's going back in the car tomorrow so we'll find out in the next couple of days how well it shifts. It went together very smoothly and everything air checked good so no reason why it shouldn't work.

@@GaryFerraro I got the transmission installed today and it worked perfect for 3 miles. It still works but I have to let off the throttle to shift from second to third, and it shifts back to second most times when i step back on the gas to maintain speed. I checked the kickdown rod and that is operating as it should from the outside. Must be a sticking valve? I installed a transgo shift kit. It has never slipped, it just simply shifts back to second. I also noticed the downshifts coming to a stop are slightly delayed now as well. Any ideas? sticking governor? i took all of this stuff apart and cleaned it spotless and made sure all the valves worked freely before install, but I can only get stuff so clean in my garage. 1-2 shift and reverse work perfectly.

I've overhauled 2 BW Model 35's. Both needed pumps, one had a chewed up rear band & broken Center Support bolt.
I understand the BW Models 8, 11, & 12 were a lot like the old Ford FMX. Looks like the Model 8 had bronze clutches, like the early FMX's did.

I am always curious about these units (FMX, BW 35, Fordomatic, Cruiseomatic, etc.) - can they be taken apart (sans the front pump and converter), without taking it out of the vehicle?
