Dana is the "gatekeeper" because the secret route to the temple is in her kitchen hidden behind the fridge. The "keymaster" apartment is the last one before hers. There's also not so subtle sexual inuendo in their titles.... A "locked gate(or *ahem* "hole") and the *cough* phallic "key" to opening it.
Also, Director Ivan Reitman ran into William Atherton(EPA guy) a few years later thinking he'd happily welcome the success of the movie, But Atherton said the role made his life absolutely miserable. When he was recognized in public, any and everyone would talk shit to him.... oh, And I do mean EVERYONE. He quit going to bars because someone would inevitably taunt and/or try to assault him. Even when stuck in traffic, kids that recognized him would throw stuff out school bus windows, and yell "hey! dickless!"

Asia, they were the gate keeper and key master simply because of the apartments that they occupied. Once they got together and had sex, it opened the gate and released Gozer into the world. And Peter used science as a way to
con people and not do any work. He would have been happy to stay at the college and use Science to hit on college girls. When the busting came along, he used it to make money, period. They charged a lot of money to catch ghost. As Peter said, "No ghost is too big, and no FEE is too big." That there was real ghost was just a way to over charge people.

Just inside the front door, beside where the crew sits by the fire engine, waiting for a call out, is a *ton* of Ghostbusters merchandise - endless badges, car registration plates, etc. They even have the large Lego firehouse model of the firehouse! Outside, a couple of modified Ghostbusters logos are painted on the footpath/pavement. So, yes, very much keeping the legacy going, there...

Asia and BJ, you commented about how Ghostbusters came out in 1984. To give it some historical context, this came out on the heels of two major film franchises that very summer: Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. And it was right before some other great movies that same summer like The Karate Kid, Dune, The Last Starfighter, and The Terminator. So the fact that it went against these great movies and wound up be a blockbuster that summer of ‘84 is a tremendous feat.

This is a movie that should be watched many times for the all surrounding comedy. Foreground and background, verbal and non verbal. This is my all time favorite, number one movie of all time. It's got romance, comedy, sci fi and action- everything. I watch it at least once a year. I'm a bit bias because I'm from this city, but it's an undeniable classic. Nothing beats the original, but part 2 and afterlife(part3) are a must watch!

I love Asia’s laugh it’s contagious, I smile every time she laughs. FYI the gatekeeper is female and the key master is male. Gotta stick the key in the lock to open the gate. When you add the fact that Louis (key master) is constantly locking himself out of his apartment, comedy brilliance.

Funny story. There were copyright issues iver the title, and Columbia was going to have to dish out money and were balking at the price.
So, they filmed the ground level entrance to the apartment early.
The producer got the studio execs on a pay phone as the crowd is cheering and chanting Ghostbusters. So they could get a taste of what would be on film.
Needless to say, they forked over the cash.

This Blu-ray upscale with the more greenish "color corrected"🙄 tint kind spoils some of the Animatronic and Claymation elements, and makes the superimposed passes not look as translucent is they should. The Library Ghost is FAR more see-thru' on the DVD. The lines are too defined and janky on this version. 💖

Open endings like the end of this movie happened all the time in the 80's. If they proved popular enough, in time, movies, or more often, comic books would swoop in to do that continued "what if" story and keep things going for a while. There are two direct movie sequels, Ghostbusters II, and Ghostbusters Afterlife that just came out within the last year. There is also a Ghostbusters Cartoon series that took cannon ideas from both two movies and kept things going for at least 4 years of shows. Extreme Ghostbusters that fallowed that show latter on for another 2-3 years, Ghostbusters The Video Game that played out as a Ghostbusters III that came out in 09, and continued things 10 years after II. And there is talk of Afterlife continuing on with 2 more movies as they finish working out the scripts, and a planned cartoon series to fill in the down time between movies.

I saw this movie in 1984 in the theater, and it's just as amazing now as it was then. There was a "Ghostbusters 2" in 1989, and in my opinion, it wasn't as good as the first film. "Ghostbusters" was, is, and always will be a CLASSIC. Sadly, when "Ghostbusters: Answer The Call" came out in 2016, it was basically a "Ghostbusters" movie in name only. There was NO CONNECTION between that film, and the 1984 and 1989 films.
