(My LoloYodel sense is that it's certainly NOT 1st or 2nd generation ... but it's very good anyway).
This was the closing night of the very fine (exquisite) 3 night run at The Alpine Valley Music Theatre. It was essentially from the July 17th show which constituted ALMOST all of the great "Downhill From Here" video (3 songs actually come from this July 19th show : "West LA Fade", "Desolation Row" & "The Deal"). This July 19th is also a very sweet show and has a truly spectacular "Morning Dew" !

This is the best Looks Like Rain ever! Bobby, Jerry and Brent all nail it. I think these 3 shows were so good because they knew they were going to make a DVD out of them. I saw shows in 13 states. The 89 Alpine shows are my all time favorite. I still get goose bumps.

I agree. I was at these three shows Alpine 89 and that was a good year for them. The late 80's especially because didn't Jer lose weight around this time or get remarried or something? I don't mean this as a lot down of course, but when he lost weight, he was a lot happier and healthier. He was in better health and spirits, worked out and gave up that heroine shit...late 80's was a good run for the bans and EVEN BOB SAID THIS IN AN INTERVIEW ONCE....
89-90 were killer. Check out 11-20-73 a LLR contender

Just outta college and living in Chitown for this run...Had seen Valley shows since early 80's in HS (got on bus at 16), and yes this place and the boys changed my life, FOR SURE!! It went from loving this place to my love for the Deer Creek shows that scaled up Alpine!!

Definitely not sad for me. I have someone who filled this song. I is beautiful beyond word. Landscape empty. Written in the letters of her name. The writer understood love by true definition. He accepted his other eve n with to the rain. He did not like rain and knew his bed would be empty but still.....the words. Love songs written in the letters of your name.

Timothy Forkes thirty thousand inside and seventy thousand outside... If I remember right the rain off until the end of the show .... giant killer whale chasing Gumby through the crowd... whew! What a week!
I was there too. And I also remember the GIANT Gumby at several Alpine shows. '87 and up. At the '89 show I and my GF(at the time) felt a Magickal presence in the rainy cold parking lot. We both turned around to see what we believe was none other than the now Late Great Mr. Jerry Garcia sipping coffee while concealing himself in dark sunglasses and a Spanish looking poncho, giggling because he knew we recognized him in his disguise. We gave him the knowing nod back, but decided not to blow his cover as he wandered amongst the crowd. To this day I believe it was really Him just getting a feel for the crowd he was about to play for. I suspect he infiltrated parking lot venues quite a bit.

3 days of the Grateful Dead at Alpine was the best!!!! We got soaked the 1st night, and remained muddy and wet the next 2 days!!!!! This was also the 20th anniversary of Woodstock, we had a blast!!!! Shakedown Street was alive and well!!!!! I still have the bootleg T-shirt of "FATMAN" i bought along Shakedown St-- The Batman movie came out then, and the T has Jerry's bat face on the front, with the Dead skull on the back!!!!!!!! Tie-dyed of course!!!!!!!
@@tomlund4951 Right on!!! Thee most crowded 3 day Dead fest I've been to--- We had tickets to the 1st night-- but snuck in the 2nd + 3rd night!!! Slept in a car the 1st night, and in a teepee with some gals we met the other nights!!!!!!!!! After the rains were over, East Troy was overwhelmed with wet deadheads wandering around town and the laundromat!!!! I gave rides for the wet and the lost for 2 days after these shows!!!!!!!!

I saw them do this magnificent song at Oxford Plains Speedway in The Great State of Maine in 1988. If anyone was there, do You Remember the one man Helicopter coming from the parking lot behind the stage during this Tune ? I do. Whoa ! A sight to see. I remember it clear as day. Miss Ya Jerry and Brent. 🙏

The early versions of this song never impressed me. But the versions offered in 89 and further, have so much dynamics, colors, arcs, and motion, it's hard not to love it

no, this was never recorded on "Wake of the Flood" nor any other Grateful Dead studio album. Only on "Ace" which was a "solo" release. Nevertheless, yes, a truely great song !

Yes this song is my favorite and Yes Jerry seems to agree and respond to Bob's lyrics in duet. Corrina is my next favorite sometimes I've felt I was being called to the band from across a sea of fans. 😂 I'd like to think that one interpretation of this song is when Bobby states that his landscape would be empty. I truly believe he's talking about the fans. After the last show fans will not be sleeping here anymore. Venue to venue and the deadheads follow him and. And he doesn't want the shows to end because he feels at home at each spot. And while they have to go, so they go to the next venue.And then once again, his landscape is gonna be empty. After the band sees us, they have to get up and go somewhere else and run around. Brave the storm cause we'll all be leaving again.😊
