The shutoff would have been an on/off solenoid which would have allowed the operator's switches (or the low oil pressure / high jacket water temp switches) to stop the engine when needed. These are highly in demand. The generator sets when complete fetch great money and are an often stolen piece of equipment from rental fleets. Hi mustie, your persistence paid off in the end. I let out a big cheer when it started. Woohoo! I spotted a similar engine running a home built log mill. Super reliable and will go forever. Love diesels. Hope you keep it, it's a gem. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

And as a little afterthought, I love your great attitude and how you chuckle at things when they go awry!
Only some one with NO CLUE would ever toss something like that in the junk. Even for parts its worth hundreds of dollars. Put it in a power king tractor😎

I keep bringing home junk from the scrap yard myself. Picked up a 15KW 1998 Onan marine generator a couple weeks ago. Has a 4 cylinder kubota diesel. Gave the forklift operator $50 and he took it from the junk pile and put it on my truck. Replaced the electric fuel pump and had it purring like a kitten the next day. It will power my house with no problem. Disabled the sea water pump and replaced all of the coolant system with a radiator and electric fan.
If you were in Europe I'd suggest hotrod Aixam :-) Aixam is a French brand known for its microcars that are classified as mopeds (50cc, 45 kmph). Back in the old days those moped cars would've had two-strokes but current ones have tiny single-cylinder diesel engines. Until around 2000 these didn't require any licence in some European countries so they were popular with people who'd lost their licence on DUI charges. Easy to imagine they weren't all that popular among the other road users for that very reason :-) Another group of people drove those because they were scared of failing an actual driving test, not much better drivers than the drunk ones. Presumably some actually drove them because they're much cheaper in upkeep than cars (less fuel, barely any taxes and insurance) but at least in Austria they still got a fairly bad rep.
The uses for this lil gem of a DICRE are endless. Wish we had such a cool junkyard worker friend. Stumbled across your channel now subscribed, Mustie1.
Love those little Kubota diesel engines. Sad to see that in a scrap yard. (When you finally got it running smoothly, I thought...that's an engine in good nick.) That valve under the fuel pump is a drain down cock for the engine coolant. Bleeding the fuel through is done with the outer bolt where the fuel enters the injector pump. Then loosen the injector inlets.....close when fuel appears... I like your perseverance!
I am telling you you are so mechanically inclined ,you’re one of these guys that if they gave you one spark plug you would make something running with it🛠⚙️ another great job
swap this into a kei truck with a bed like a 1980's suzuki carry (they're originally 3 cylinder 550cc 30hp). then use it to haul parts and go dumpster diving while getting insane MPG and looking cool
Would make a great golf cart engine. Or make your own generator. Great little small bass boat engine too. Sailboat engine? Maybe put it in an old jet ski? The possibilities are endless. Great running little engine. Would also be great on a service truck for a large air compressor engine. Divers could also hook it up to an air compressor for deep sea diving. Log splitter, all kinds of things.
Technically, you didn't smell it. For all other purposes, you did. Your mind knows the smell and your association recalled it. You perceived it, and everything you experience about the natural world comes via your perception. Did you know there's a whole bunch of birds like Peacocks that don't have any blue pigmentation in their feathers? They're not really blue, it's the way that light refracts off their feathers. You are seeing the blue wavelength of the light spectrum. The rest got cancelled out through wave interference. So, the bird is technically not blue, but for all other purposes, it is. Did you see a blue bird? Yes and no. There wasn't a blue bird, but you're perception knows it saw one.
Great find! You really don't want to run those little Kubota's without coolant in the head for more than a few seconds. They have a spherical combustion chamber above the valves. Due to the compact engine size, the material is very thin there and needs water directly behind it to handle the heat, otherwise they will crack quick. I have the 3 cyl version (20hp) version of that engine in my Kubota tractor and you can see on my channel where I rebuilt this engine and it had had that issue. I ended up replacing the head with a Chinese clone. You should link Chucks UA-cam channel as thanks!
Love it! I tell ya these little diesels run for hours and hours on a gallon of diesel. Can't believe someone would throw it away. I'd put a 48V generator on it to charge a 48V backup battery pack.

It's genuinely satisfying watching this, makes me want to go and hunt out engines to repair except I've already got far too many hobbies, projects and 'stuff' to do and I *really* don't need a garage full of engines.
It never got run. Sat until it couldnt start. I know many people that do that. They never run their generators, then when they need them, they do not run. The exaust rusted off from water egress into it. Its best to wrap a plastc bag and tape it over the end to prevent water from entering. Nice engine bad design.

For generators oil pressure sensors and engine temp sensors are mainly for the generator controller safety shutdown. It has the original oil filter on it from the factory . The injector you tightened up would be where you would "bleed" the air out of the system. crack it open to expose the flared end until fuel comes out as it is running. also not sure if it has a mechnical gov or electronic, you could have an electronic valve for the gov controller. It may be set at 3600 rpm or 1800 rpm as all generators run at those speeds for 2 pole 3600 or 4 pole 1800 rpm. that will get you 60hz... Generac makes stuff with a "transmission" in it so they can run it at 2200.

Never gets old watching him getting an old cast off runnin' again.
I can think of several uses for it.
For some reason I took great joy when she started.
Nice lil' motor for that forklift you just bought.
Hi mustie, your persistence paid off in the end. I let out a big cheer when it started. Woohoo! I spotted a similar engine running a home built log mill. Super reliable and will go forever. Love diesels. Hope you keep it, it's a gem. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
I love how they categorize your videos as "entertainment" Mustie! I can (and have) spent hours watching vid after vid since I came across your channel about a month ago. Yes, it's very entertaining and informative! I wish I could have had this as a resource during my wrench turning days! Thank you for entertaining and informing me.
I knew mustie you would get it running and she is definitely a keeper you have a great night my friend take care buddy
You've given me a hunger to go out to my barn and bring back to life a small rototiller that's been sitting there for about 14 years! Come spring I think I'll go in there and do some wrenching myself! It's been too long since I've turned a bolt or two. Thanks, Mustie! And as a little afterthought, I love your great attitude and how you chuckle at things when they go awry!
Only some one with NO CLUE would ever toss something like that in the junk. Even for parts its worth hundreds of dollars.
Put it in a power king tractor😎
Or someone with enough money not to care.
1963Franksworld yup a garden tractor with that motor would be great. Mustie has a diesel tractor already. But to repower a Simplicity or Allis Chalmers from the ‘60s would be good. The water cooled is hard to deal with.
I had a Power King tractor, sold it to a guy that does garden tractor pull's, it had two transmissions, and a big a$$ car rearend! It was a beast, and with this diesel motor, Wow!
i just got a Fourtrax from the side of the road on big garbage day. with some tinkering its fully running. some people just dont care.
If it was a company it's just not worth their time. The company I work for scraps all their computers every 3 years, and they crush them. Probably quarter million dollars in laptops. They just can't be bothered and can't sell them to just amy recycler because of proprietary info on them so it's the crusher
I vote for you to build something like Brian's 4x4 Lawnmower that was on last week's video
Love the way you troubleshoot the problem then repair it. I can't tell you how much money you have saved me by me watching your videos. Thanks oh so much and keep them coming.
Great way to end my night, love from Gold Coast, Australia!
just woke up in the states
Great video thanks from Sydney Australia
No mouse nest, no gas-a-hol What's there not to like about a Diesel Engine?
Looking forward to learning more about small diesel engines, too!
Don't forget a Diesel fuel filter when you fit it somewhere. Otherwise the injectors will clog.
Hmmm, liquid cooled 2 cylinder diesel motorcycle? Maybe a diesel Rokon?
I thought about a diesel VW bug or maybe another boat?
I'm in the middle of building a junk rat bike, if I could find one of these, oh man giggity
Absolutely Love your Vids Mustie. They’re the best. Love your sense of humour. 👍
Time for a steampunk diesel bike!
Yes!
Just a bit too big and heavy for a regular bicycle frame. Maybe a more motorcycle-like frame and tires will sustain a motor that big.
Put it on a CT 70. Lol!
I thought the same way. Maybe a 750 frame would be the best possible option.
This will end up in a shaky cam video.
Hi from BC.
I would love too see if it would work in one of your VW van or bugs.
That would neat too see.
Not enough power 12 hp is a lot less than factory
If you were in Europe I'd suggest hotrod Aixam :-)
Aixam is a French brand known for its microcars that are classified as mopeds (50cc, 45 kmph).
(When you finally got it running smoothly, I thought...that's an engine in good nick.)
That valve under the fuel pump is a drain down cock for the engine coolant.
Bleeding the fuel through is done with the outer bolt where the fuel enters the injector pump.
Then loosen the injector inlets.....close when fuel appears...
I like your perseverance!
Waste oil generator to power and heat your shop in the winter.
NAW!! that's what wood stoves 'r for!! Note the abundance,, fo FREE, fuel, readily, available to him!!!
Awesome :)
What a great engine for a portable saw mill........ way cool!!!
That would make a good power plant for a hydraulic pump for a log splitter.
Wow cool little engine, learning session for me. enjoyed the video. all right Chuck!
Build a diesel motorcycle:)
Diesel quad bike would entertain me.
Like, , graft it in to that ancient, , Cushman, cycle frame he got a while, back!!
diesel *bicycle*!
@@etankohcz1842 5/fflttmt8
Been there; done that....
I think it would be a good log splitter engine with plenty of power.
The spare Honda Trail 70 ...DIESEL POWERED
OMG yes
actually, not a bad idea, a diesel motorcycle. Orange county choppers build one with a briggs diesel years ago...
It's gonna sound crazy but I swear I caught a wiff when it fired up
I second that, the mind is playing trick on us.
When I read this I caught a whiff of BS.. and I was right!
Totally, I had the same experience...that's pretty wild!! LOL!!!
Right on never run a diesel with out coolant have seen cracked heads caused by just wanted to see if it will run
ModernSurvivalists e
The old 1960's Land Rover diesels also cannot be run without coolant as heat and lacquer buildup will destroy the diesel injectors.

I was a Diesel mechanic in the Navy
Cool channel I see you work on Honda's had one as a kid
Joe Navy veteran 🇺🇸🇺🇸
This is absolutely awesome... please do more with this motor!! Build a monster mower to compete with Brians!
Love it! I tell ya these little diesels run for hours and hours on a gallon of diesel. Can't believe someone would throw it away. I'd put a 48V generator on it to charge a 48V backup battery pack.
i would put that motor in a Volkswagen Beetle
I ENJOY WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS Mustie1 THANK YOU ITS FUN
ONE OF MY FAVORITE CARS AND VW BUS ALSO VW TRUCKS IS A VW BUG
BACK IN THE DAY ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO MY DAD HAD A 1975 Volkswagen Beetle 3 SPEED ON THE FLOOR THE CAR RUN GREAT LOVE IT I DROVE IT AROUND THE 3 ACRES OF LAND DAD HAD THAT WAS FUN BACK THEN, THANK AGAIN MUSTIE1 GOD BLESS Y'ALL
That Engine canenoff a semi truck APU unit. On your pick up truck, you had the other pieces that connect to it to provide power to a truck.
if you'll run it on sunflower oil the exhaust gas will smell like french fries.
use cooking oil from fryers. yummy smell.
French fries do not cause the oil to have its characteristic smell. That so called "french fry smell" comes from the oil itself.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm fried foods...
Ala Willie Nelsons tour bus, aye?
Go cart just begging for it. Great lot bud...nice one thank you. 🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🍷🍷🍷👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊👊
If indeed that was out of a Kabota tractor, he was missing the electric fuel pump that makes the thing self priming. But Mustie finally figured it out, primed it manually and got it going.
I always get a kick out of you starting engines without exhaust manifolds on!! The Diesel didn't sound odd but that little trail bike sure did.
I loved the flubber, can't believe Honda had that sound hidden behind a muffler.
It's genuinely satisfying watching this, makes me want to go and hunt out engines to repair except I've already got far too many hobbies, projects and 'stuff' to do and I *really* don't need a garage full of engines.
That’s got factory paint on the filter, did this thing never get an oil change?
Or it was overhauled recently
Prob. very low hrs., being a gen..
It never got run. Sat until it couldnt start. I know many people that do that. They never run their generators, then when they need them, they do not run. The exaust rusted off from water egress into it. Its best to wrap a plastc bag and tape it over the end to prevent water from entering. Nice engine bad design.
I know it doesn't look like it, but maybe there's a replaceable paper cartridge filter inside that blue filter body.
@@RebornRockerVids Nope, they are spin-on-off filters..... But yes, that is Kubota factory blue paint: That engine is as good as new: Looks like it had a collision with its Radiator....some fan blades broken, not a good reason to scrap it at all.
Maybe it was on a refrigerated truck (driving the fridge, above the cab)
make a mini Dozer with a hydrostatic transmission thanks from Sean in Vermont
Glad to see you got it going. DON'T FORGET TO HUCK UP THE RADIATOR OR COOLING SYSTEM, UNLESS IT'S AIR COOLED.
I'd vote for a boat motor. That thing would be cool in a Chris Craft style runabout.
i love how you talk like were actually there :)
Great little Desiel motor Mustie 1 :) also Glow Plug heater in warm weather use for 15 seconds on then disconnected it & in cold weather use for 1 min on and 10W30 engine won't hurt motor it help put lube up! Also motor be great to use for another project for future!
That's a good running little diesel engine. Awesome video mustie1 👍👍👍
Motorcycle engine if I ever saw one, wish I had it been thinking about it for years
I have to say, you are very knowledgeable and enjoy watching your videos...I am amazed that starter didn't fry
Generac is just overadvertised GARBAGE! Can't givre me one of those piles of steaming $h1t!
Great find. It would make a great jon boat motor.
I see a heck of a hydraulic drive sitting there looking all pretty and waiting to go!
It's made for your pedal boat, I think it would fit just fine !
Diesel ..... nice and constant revs and torque .... I do not think I've seen you do a diy high pressure water-pump yet.
