Gel polish alone is enough to protect my nails and help them grow longer. The builder gel is a game changer!!! My nails look so damn good, and I let them go to just over the finger tips (I work on a computer, wind up hitting wrong keys if they get too long). My problem is leaving them alone! I love doing my own nail designs so I get bored fast and want to switch things up. I currently have three of my nails in Gaoy's 1525, and my index and ring finger have an overlay of Mizhse's reflective glitter gel in a similar pink.😁 I've gotten so many compliments on the look, and have actually left them alone for more than a week.
That’s awesome news builder gel is working so well for you!!! It’s really a fabulous product! Have you tried using peel base over the builder gel to switch up your manis faster?!
I’m so happy you explained that some gel bases don’t stick I did the builder gel and was so discouraged until I seen this video!
Im so glad to hear that!! Definitely don’t get discouraged!! There are tons of things to do for builder gel application and getting it to stick! Let me know if you need more help!
This is really helpful. I used to put builder gel on medium almond shaped full tips, however it was a pain to go into work as a sterilization assistant/x ray tech. I'll be trying this on my short natural nails.
I’m so glad it helped you! Your nails will grow well keeping it on and doing fills too. Especially if you use lots of cuticle oil. My nails grow so well when I do that!
If you need more help with builder gel overlays on your natural nails- I have this huge guide of 48 pages that walks you through everything you need to know from prep to application to removal! And running a Labor Day sale for $10 off with code LABOR. Happy to answer any questions you have!

Thank Keiona!! You absolutely can use gel polish over builder gel!! It works beautifully!! Let me know if you’d like the steps for doing it!!

Nice video ~ Is that acetone that you are cleaning your sidewalls with before curing? Thx
@@Suzen_S. you can use acetone but I prefer isopropyl alcohol to really clean it up!

@@NicolesBeautyScene Awww, Thank you! 💕
This is very helpful for me, I always have a short nail coz every time I grow them they break on their own .. and every time I use soft tips they did not stick for so long like only 2 days, argh so I am trying to use builder gel

Thank you so much. I’ve been watching your videos and didn’t get that far. You are a hoot! Love listening to you 😂
This has been THE most helpful video… Thank you so much! I wasted so much time watching other videos before this that spent wayyy too much time focusing on nail prep, so I appreciated that yours was sped up!
I do have one question though: if I use builder gel and then apply regular soft gel base+color+top over it, when it comes time to change colors in a couple weeks can I leave the same builder layer if it’s still adhered properly? Or would I need to file off ALL layers and start with a fresh nail bed with each color change?
Thank you in advance!
I’m so happy to hear it helped you Shelby!! I have a bunch more short builder gel ones too if you need more- I’ll link them!
You definitely don’t need to take all the BG off for fills! Efile off the gel, then efile off any lifting. Then you can do the fill on the BG. Here’s how I do fills! Let me know any time you have questions- I’m happy to help!

Hello, what is builder gel used for? Is it to protect your natural nails?
Hi Lisa! Builder gel is used as an overlay on your natural nails to protect them. You can also use them to extend your length! I haven’t soaked off my nails in over 2 years. I do fills and use an efile to remove it. My nails grow so well when I keep builder gel on all the time. What other questions can I help you with?!
Thanks, that’s what I was hoping. You can use dip powder over the builder gel right?
@@lisarich3326 yep! You can dip right over it once it’s been cured, wipe off the tacky layer, then file and shape, wipe it off again with alcohol. Apply a thin layer of dip base and let it dry, then dip like normal. You will need to Efile off the dip powder. If you don’t want to efile off dip powder- you can use peel base in between the builder gel (also referred to as BG) and dip powder.
@@NicolesBeautyScenecan I do dehydrator then builder?
@@cecy709 hi! You need to do dehydrator, then primer or bond- whichever you have as long as it’s for gels. Then you can go right in with builder gel. Some people do need a really thin layer of gel base (that you cure) after the primer to have builder gel adhere better. But you can try without it first to see if you get a long hold!
Hi Nicole. I used BG in a bottle for the first time and maybe you can help. A few of my nails didn't lift from the edges but did get like a bubble area and I was able to lift it off easily in that area. Also it wasn't around the cuticles either. I dry prepped as I always do with dip, used a dehydrator, primer, gel base, and bg. But several of the other nails seemed ok but I was worried they would all bubble, so I soaked all of it off and most of them were so hard to get off so I'm guessing those wouldn't have bubbled. Brand new lamp 150w. Flashed cured each nail for only 10s, then did the whole hand for 60s. Any ideas? I don't have time during the week to experiment but I was planning on trying again this weekend. One person suggested I skip the primer to see if it helps. What do you think? Also, I am using gel set and BG from CNDD.
Hi Donelle! I can help! So did your nails bubble during curing or were they bubble after curing? That lamp wattage is super high so curing for 60 seconds would likely over cure it causing the BG to shrink up. That could be why!
I would not skip primer. I would first cure less since your wattage is so high. See if they still bubble only curing like 40 seconds.
It bubbles many hours later. If I do less time, how can I tell if they are cured enough?
You know I'm watching ALL the videos where did you get the mini uv lamp?

Great info!
Thank you so much Sally!! Do you use builder gel?!
@@NicolesBeautyScene I have used it for fill. I tried attaching nail covers with it a couple of times but they keep popping off.
@@sallyanon5382 ooono! I can help you if you’d like! What was your prep process before applying?
@@NicolesBeautyScene that’s what is so confusing! I prepped my natural nails very well - just like I prep them for gel glue and they stay on forever. I take all the shine off then dehydrate & put on primer, then gel base & cure. They stayed on for only a few hours. One of them left the builder gel behind in perfect shape so I just polished it. It’s still there. Oh, and I also filed & primed the inside of the nails.
My nails don’t do well with gel base either, I can only get a few days, so if I skip that step and put the builder gel on my natural nails, will it damage my nails at all?
Hi Caitlin!! It will only damage your nails if you remove it improperly. Such as rip it off or use an efile and efile down into your natural nails. I’ve been using it for over 2 years and my nails have done amazing with it! I just do fills of it. This year I decided to try full cover “Gel X” type nails and while I loved it- I ended up damaging my natural nails. I was taking the full covers on and off way too much and picking at them. Efiled into my natural nails. All the stuff I know I shouldn’t do! Even after 3.5 years of doing my nails! So I went back to builder gel and in 1.5 months- my nails are growing beautifully and strong again!
@@NicolesBeautyScene thank you!! If I want to remove the builder gel and start over with a new color, etc. what is the best way to get it off?
@@TheHairdiva88 you’re welcome!! I efile down until I’m close to my natural nail, then switch to a sanding bit bc they’re safe to use on natural nails. If a little bit is still on your nails- it’s fine as long as there’s no lifting. So my nails often have a little bit of multiple colors lol. Currently I have a tiny bit of a baby pink left as the base but mostly all clear over top!
@@TheHairdiva88 here’s how I remove product (including builder gel) off my nails! This includes cutting them down and I’ll link another that is just the Efile part!

So when you say gel base and gel top, are thoes normally what you would get in a dip powder kit, or are they completely different?
Hi Amanda!! Yep they’re totally different! Gel base and gel top require a light to cure and you can use them to dip as well- it’s called the gel method. And then you have your regular dip liquids- those are a 3 step system (base, activator and and top). With the dip liquids- the activator is what hardens the dip VS using gels to dip- the UV/ LED light cures and hardens them. Does that help?!
@Nicole's Beauty Scene yes! Thanks for clearing that up for me. I I have a gel kit that I've used for many years, but the steps say "PH bond, Foundation, color of choice, & top it off". I think I just got confused with thoes terms. So the gel base and the gel top would be what my kit?
@@amandanoble6620 does your kit have a light with it??? Some companies call dip base gel and I have no idea why! It’s so confusing when they do that!
@@NicolesBeautyScene I use a light with my gel kit from Gelish
