I started by just buying one or two extras per grocery trip. That felt insignificant, but it was what I could afford. Well, it did add up!

Most people who are into food (and other nessesities) storage started just that way.

Hi! I love the closet. Just a quick tip. Pet food should be kept in the original bag in case of recall and for freshness. It should never be mixed old kibble with new kibble. You typically only have about 6 weeks of freshness once a bag of kibble is opened. Personally I use the plastic airtight container for freshness and then put the bag of kibble itself in its entirety into the container. ☺️ love seeing people include their pets in their preps ❤

I was the same way, Sarah. I used to buy only what we needed for the week until the pandemic and supply chain issues hit and then all the sudden things I needed would be out of stock for weeks or even months at a time. I started slowly by doubling a few items each trip until I reached the point where I was actually buying groceries for the next week and eating the groceries from the previous week. Eventually I worked up to where I am now, I go grocery shopping once every 6-8 weeks. I make bulk orders from a coop once a month. And I get milk, eggs, meat, and broth bones delivered weekly from a local farm. It's a win-win-win, buying in bulk tends to cost less per unit/lb, it saves money on gas since I'm driving to and from the stores less often, and it gives me so much peace of mind knowing that I have what I need on hand to feed my family. I joke with my husband that I fully understand what king Solomon is talking about in Proverbs 31 when he says the virtuous woman, "is like the merchants' ships, bringing her food from afar." 🤣

Aside from our working pantry, I keep a large container with enough non-perishables for 72 hours that we can grab if we need to evacuate our home for any reason, or just use at home if we need to shelter in place. It has 3 complete breakfasts lunches and dinners in it. Each summer I replace all of the things inside in with new, and we take the old on a camping trip. No waste!

I find it completely fascinating how we all react to situations in different ways. Of course I realise some people face natural disasters quite frequently, or have very specific dietary requirements….but for me what 2020 taught me was that there’s no need to stockpile. We were in no danger at any point of not being able to eat. Occasionally I couldn’t find tinned tomatoes, or eggs, but we just ate different stuff that was in stock. So that reassured me that I have no need to stock up beyond our normal!

I know this is an old comment but I see it from a slightly different point of view. I started putting up a bit extra because I just don't want to be out and about during a situation like 2020 ever again. I'd gone to the store and certain shelfs were barren. We needed toilet paper... and they had to have an manager in the aisle. Apparently people had been fighting, actual assault, over the tp. I made up my mind then that if something caused people to start panic buying I didn't want to be in the store with them. 😅

I used to think that protein powders were a waste of money but now buy them for emergencies & the times when we don't feel like eating but need our essential amino acids throughout the day.

Way to go Sarah, like you I don’t like too much stuff on hand but 2020!😱 Then all our main highways in BC 🇨🇦 got washed out in 21. Took a while to fix. Supply chain issues galore.
I just finished a clean out and tidy up in my pantry preparing for my spring & summer season here.
I pulled out my list of 20 favourite simple easy warm weather meals - we eat the same 20 ish meals but about 5 or 6 are specific to cold or warm weather.
I swap those out spring and fall. The rest stays the same.
I don’t like cooking so I just repeat what I can make in my sleep. I ditched a couple of things we’re tired of in favour of 2 new favourites.
I list the ingredients for my master list on my iPhone along with the list of 20 meals.
This means I’m sure of having the necessary pantry items on hand. Plus keeping a reasonable amount of paper products and other staples like coffee and coffee filters.
It saves money too- topping off the items as they go on a sale. Then we’re eating at sale prices.
I had to toss some outdated dry & canned foods from my emergency shelf. Tastes change.
I’ve got a small list of replacements for the next grocery order. And I’m going to use up the last of my winter recipes and their ingredients.
We live in a small condo apartment with very little kitchen cupboard space so I have a couple of tall narrow IKEA Billy bookshelves with doors in my husband’s study so I can have a pantry and I don’t have to look at all the stuff. The narrow version shelves don’t bend under the weight of cans or heavy stuff like the wider version does.
It might be a solution for that narrow side beside your pantry.
We live in fire country so I have my emergency bug out items ready to grab and go. People in our area sometimes don’t even have 15 minutes. Knowing what to grab is essential.

Good job. It looks great. When we first step up an emergency food pantry it was full of foods that would keep well, as opposed to foods we actually eat. Hence we ended up throwing out a lot of expired food. Now we just have an overflow pantry - full of extras that I buy on sale (where possible).

Having minimized in my kitchen has allowed me to use some of the cabinets for extra food storage. We shop at Costco and the "Lazy Daisy" cabinet is especially useful for storing the canned goods. My partner has a lot of foods and powders that only he consumes so those are stored in the highest cabinets. I live in a backsplit and don't really want to store food up or down the stairs but I do store the paper products in those areas because the washrooms are on those levels. It's all about making what space you have work for you!

We tend to stock up on food before hurricane season that will not require a lot of water to make or even food that does not need heating. So tin stuff, porridge oats..we also have to stock up.on water ideally enough for 3/4 days as water is the first thing to be cut off here after a big storm.

I've been storing since the 1970s and you are starting out very well. Yes, always what your family eat because that is not the time to try new things. And, yes, storage is a wonderful way to save money, because as you start to store you, can spend a bit more on sale items because you know you will store and use them in a timely manner. I store a lot of beans and that sort of thing because I'm not a lot into eating meat. So it is much cheaper and safer to store that sort of thing. If I remember correctly, you do not eat meat at all and you will find that it is a much better way to save food.

January 2020 I noticed rice, calrose, hard to find in local shop. We have a wheat allergy and rice snob in house. I increased how many 5 pound bags I keep. The items I would eat and have on hand I don’t use. My focus is buying the weekly items that can sit in pantry or freezer. I’m now thinking what can fit. What is the priority if can’t find in shop for a time. It’s dry in winter and need distilled water for small humidifiers. Expanded storage of it. It’s often not available. Or limited to2 and I need 4 a week.

Rethink the rolling bins with the glass jars. Too heavy. Pulling the drawer might accidentally roll it off the shelf? They may work well for that top shelf with Kleenex. If the shelf rolls too far and everything falls out they won’t break.
