  • In this video, I learn of the effects that extended exposure to subzero temperatures have on car batteries and their ability to drive the starter on a modest 6-cylinder engine. Easily two of the "just barely-est" engine starts that I've ever seen on an automotive vehicle, all captured live and unrehearsed on film.
The week prior to the recording of this video, the Park Avenue started just fine on a -10° morning with the lights on, which is the reasoning behind my cheeky "this should be no problem" remark early in the video. That cold start, while chilly, was nowhere near as difficult as this one, in part because the temperature had not been that cold for so long.
The power steering, which has always been a bit on the whiny side when it's warm outside, sounds outright depressing when it gets down to the -10° mark. A lot of things start to behave curiously at that temperature.
In the day that passed between the unassisted cold start seen at the beginning of the video and the jump-start shown in the second half, the Park was jump-started once off of another vehicle in the afternoon, a struggle made all too real by the hood being frozen shut. Ironically, this was not the first time that a car's hood has been frozen shut on me, but that's a story for another video.
Stay frosty! ...but also, stay safe.

She was struggling to start up, but she got there!
