- Korean American actor Steve Yeun, who played a zombie-slayer for six seasons on the mega-hit "The Walking Dead," now stars in the acclaimed film "Minari," as an immigrant dad who searches for his American Dream on a farm in Arkansas. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Yeun about his own immigrant experience, and how his latest movie role brought him to tears.

hollywood needs to get back to making and distributing more films like this, instead of all the tired remakes/sequels/prequels.
I don't think they need to. Hollywood can go on the franchise-route, and the indie industry can go on making films like this. It's good to have both, in my opinion, since there's no lack of good movies being made today, despite what many people think when they see what kind of movies are topping the highest-grossing charts. (especially if you go international)
Unfortunately, remakes/sequels/prequels are what pays the bills for major hollywood studios.

Yeah I teared up too. 23-y.o. Korean American, there were a lot of intimate moments during the film itself that just made me feel like crying. I was born here around 15 years after my parents had immigrated here, so I never really got to understand the kinds of struggles they experienced trying to "make it" in America. But I can't imagine how emotional it feels to portray your parents on a stage like this.
as a 1st generation korean immigrant, i can relate to this movie... i am sure this is the same for many thousands of 1st generation children who lived, witnessed and lived the struggles of their family. it was no easy thing for all parties of the family. i still remember my mom going to her factory job on a scooter in cold freezing foggy mornings because we could not afford a car. we did not know how to make a spare key to our apartment, and my sister (was 10 at the time) and I waited outside the house after school. sometimes when we were too hungry, we would walk over to k-mart and buy a bag of k-mart sandwiches for $2 and eat it in front of the door. now my sister is a lawyer and i am a engineering manager driving $100k cars, but we have a lot of scars inside from the experience. i am glad to see a movie, that somehow reminded and connects me back to those days. wonderful.
congrats on coming out of the other end of your quest. It’s important that we remind ourselves of our roots.

Yeun is just a really well-rounded actor and human being. He can be hilarious in certain settings but also incredibly profound and serious in others. One of the most likable actors in Hollywood for sure.

y, I lost interest in the series after the Negan scene - it felt like the show said "see, we can do whatever we want"
Such a heartwarming movie, Yeun and the cast were amazingly good!
I have never cried more, nor have I have been reminded of what my parents went through when they moved from their village to the capital city or my grandparents who didn't have food to eat but somehow foraged from the jungles to at least feed their kids.
They were Minari, resilient, adaptable , growing in the most unpredictable places and their relationships were tested and the bond weakened but never broke.
We are not rich but blessed enough to have a a full belly every night and a warm home to melt away the worries of the day. For that I am thankful, will forever be thankful. The sacrifices that our loved ones made should never ever be forgotten.
A fantastic interview that brought me to tears. I would love to see both Steven (and Riz Ahmed for his movie) get oscar noms even though I'm neither American nor Asian.

I think he got his renown beauty from his mom. I was blown away by her beauty in the photo. She is gorgeous
I laughed so hard when he talked about his cousin calling to try and persuade him to do something else. I remember my parents doing that too to my older brother going into law enforcement, and my cousin called and said the exact same thing to my brother, "just do whatever"
So proud and happy for Steven. I loved and missed him as Glen, but I am beyond excited to see his success now. Might I also add how amazingly handsome he is. What a gorgeous smile.
I was soo upset when they killed off his character (Glen) on the Walking Dead.... After that the series went down hill. 📽 🎞 ⤵️

@Rajesh Vengadesan Well TWD has gotten a LOT better in season 9 and 10, after Angela Kang became the showrunner. During season 7 and 8, it was a struggle for me to keep watching too. But yeah I miss Glenn. He didn't deserve that death.

23-y.o. Korean American male. Was born here in '98, but my parents had already immigrated here in '89 with my big bro. So I never got to experience the same struggles as my brother who came to the U.S. when he was 5. But getting to see a small glimpse of what it may have been like (albeit in the South) was really emotional for me. Thanks for telling this story in such an authentic and relatable way. I think it's gotta be relatable to anyone, regardless of race.

I heard about this movie months ago, I cannot wait to watch it!
I felt the squeezing pain through my chest and heart all through the movie, and I realized that as a movie buff I had never had such an emotional experience from watching any of movies, perhaps, except toward the end of Titanic. The movie doesn't have unnecessary emotional overtone, no dramatic action protagonist v antagonist, or racial tension/discrimination which could have readily existed, but rather depicts ordinary couple who suffer from their different vision for life, grandmother who awkwardly tries to adjust and assimilate into this struggling family, and of courses ordinary local folks who are generally kind and helpful despite their oddity. And the movie shows time and again allegorical touches on life itself which can be appreciated by only those who struggled through their own experiences as immigrants. The director/writer of this screenplay could be a better philosopher in my opinion, which I stress is the highest praise I can offer. Steven Yeun portrays superbly the role of the struggling man who tries to reach what he sees as "an American dream", a real Oscar winner if I were allowed to choose one. Bravo.
His story is so relatable with other Asian Americans, everything down to families encouraging their sons to go into med school, to be "super achievers" and to always "do the right thing".
It really takes courage to do what he did, to go down a different path.
I've not heard of him, bc I don't watch much TV, but the movie's premise is intriguing and I wanna see it.

I would totally love to see him get that Oscar. Golden Globes snubbed the picture by putting it in a foreign language category instead of Best Picture Drama with the excuse that over 50% of the movie was not in English, but when "Inglorious Basterds" came out it got the nod with 60% of the film not in English.
Is that rule just for the Golden Globes or for the Oscars too? Because Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon won an Oscar for Best Picture and if I remember correctly it was all in Chinese.

@@anonanon334 Thx. But it was nominated for Best Picture (2001) which means the language rule isn't a criteria with the Academies. It's too bad Minari won't qualify for the GG, even though it is an American film. I would think that's more important than the language factor.

Still can't overcome the fact that Steve's character was killed in the cruellest manner. Stopped watched "The Walking Dead" after his demise. It's just one of those "The West Saves The Day" shows but in reality, the COVID-19 pandemic smacks Hollywood right in the face.
Can’t believe they killed off one of the most likable protagonists and strongest love story. I stopped watching too. No Hope in a show like that is pointless.

He should get nominated for best actor for this movie at the Oscars along side byung hun lee for the man standing next for South Korea too but also a good third one would be the turkish actor aras bulut lynemli who played a mentally challenged man jailed for a crime he did not commit in the movie miracle in cell number 7 which is a remake of the South Korean version that was a really good movie shockingly and really emotional it’s on Netflix right now for those who want to see it.

Man that first season of the walking dead absolutely brilliant. Can’t wait to see this new movie minari. Being a Korean American as well I gotta see it. I was born here and never left the US but my parents and grandparents came from korea over here when my parents were in high school and had to grind to get where they are now. Respect so many families that take the same hard journey towards success.
This was one of the most beautiful movies I saw. The story of Jacob and Monica was so well done, the movie that they deserve all the accolades they get...
