  • One man builds a cheap, rustic log cabin in the Canadian wilderness alone and without power tools over several months in 2017.

To watch me build my next cabin - bigger and better than this one!..
    To relax…
To virtually immerse yourself in nature…
To see how I live debt free, stress free and low cost…
To see how I build things alone…
To see how I cook with no electricity or gas…
To hear what steps I took to retire in my mid-forties so I could live my dream life…
To interact with the happiest and most helpful community of viewers on UA-cam…
    To become more self-reliant.
Finally, one video showing the entire build process from the cutting of the first tree to the laying of the last floor board - no food, no talking, no visitors, just carpentry, bushcraft, timber framing, blood, sweat and tears.
My end goal is to have an off grid, primitive wilderness homestead, where I can practice primitive technology, bushcraft and traditional skills in an effort to become as completely self reliant as possible in this day and age.
In late April, I cut the first balsam fir tree down on the property near Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. Next, from June until August, I collected all of the building materials and fabricated the cabin using saddle notches in the corners. I cleared the land in August, laid down gravel for a pad and began erecting the off grid log cabin. By September, the walls were done and I started on the roof framing in October.
In November, I burned the roof boards with shou sugi ban, an ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood. Against convention, I installed the roof in board and batten fashion, using my roofing background to come up with techniques to keep the cabin watertight.
Next, I moved inside where I installed a Vermont Castings wood stove on top of a limestone flagstone floor, which extended from the doorway to the center of the cabin underneath the fireplace.
For the rest of the floor, I framed it using 2x4 and 2x6 red pine boards and then installed 2x6x10' boards, which I burned using the same shou sugi ban technique.
Now in December, I chinked the walls with moss and clay and have been spending a lot of time in the cabin, starting rustic furniture made with materials from the surrounding forest.

My Self Reliance My uncle, a trapper near fox creek, alberta, tells me the game wardens burnt down someones cabin built in the woods. It has to be on skids, now, even on an owned traplines. Wardens (athabasca office) tell me one can only "camp" 21 days, and not allowed to "live" in the wild. If so, they would be forced out and, yes, cabin destroyed. Purchased land seems only way..but not all have money. If any, its they that could use this resource most.
Sad; ww1 and 2 didnt do much to keep us living free..or id id be out there too.
6 stars out of 5 on both cabin and video presentation.

Why did you cut all the way down on the one window instead of cutting it the right size like the others?? Was there a purpose to that? I was just wondering.. also I think it would look nice if you built a railing around the porch

I didn't see one single power tool. You built a log cabin from scratch, and from the ground up. Very few people in this world would even attempt this, let alone complete it. Your man card should be made out of platinum and embossed with 24k gold! Well done! Feel proud of your achievement!

Some 150 years ago, this kind of house was very common for people to live in, these days, I don't think many would be able to live in them, since they're used to such different conditions.

All the other positive remarks to you! I agree with them. Your Youth tubes have brought me remembrances of the sounds of my childhood when my father would build things, when we camped, hunted and fished together. I am 70 now and the sounds on your UA-cam like the fire, the pounding and echo of the hammer, the saws, the crunching of the snow, the birds, the animal calls. Your quiet methodical work is how my father was when working and he made a lot of his tools and used the old tools more than the modern. I love your dog and how you are so easy. I love to fish and the only good fishing left i s in Canada. Your cooking does make me hungry also but you cook like I was brought up to cook. Did you graduate from Chico State University in CA? I thought I saw a quick flash of one of your books that may have had a partial title that way. My grandson just graduated from there with a B.A. in Psychology. I grew up on a prune ranch with the Sacramento River nearby me and I fished the river every day of my life when I wasn't in the mountains stream fishing for trout. Living in an apartment in the city now makes me feel like a prisoner and when I watch you You tubes I feel free and my anxiety level plummets. I get so much out of your UA-cams I can sit for hours watching you lost in the peace and tranquility. Your doing a lot of work and I wish for you to the pleasure of peace and tranquility for many years ahead. Thank you.

@My Self Reliance I think it's funny that people comment on them searching for ideas or just seeing you building that cabin and then being envious of you being able to do it.
I mean, THIS is what computers and internet is for. So people can get information from each others. I think, the thing is that people are not interested in investing the time to do some research to make some "thing". Even the simplest things are not look at more than just "I want that" or "I hate that". Where is the lowest bar?
    By the way. Cool cabin.

Too many people think you can buy happiness, when true happiness lies where determination and hard work are needed.
If you have a job where you're not able to think about yours and others well beings, that job won't help you with anything but money.
And you can't buy everything with money, people think you can, but that's the hoax of mankind.
Doing something hard means that In the end, you'll be satisfied. And when you're satisfied, you're happy.

Best vid I have ever seen on YT. I was late to work today just didn't want to go , kept hitting snooze . This man has a purpose in life . How he works is so smooth he doesn't fight the wood he works in unison with it. I fight everything everyday and it all fights back and wears me out . The physical labor he preforms is a lost art and the skills he has are top notch.
