I don't think you understand how masks work and you didn't distinguish between the different types of masks and quality of seal. Masks (the medical ones not the cotton ones), as you said at some point, are not coffee filters, they are mini HEPA filters and filter aerosols with their electrets.
Omicron being more aerosolised and highly contagious, surgical masks don't work half as well, but well fitted N95/FFP2 or higher grade still work well against the virus.

People talk about how safe the air in the cabin is (40% recycled through HEPA filters and 60% fresh), but they forget to mention that this is true only when the airplane is in the air and pressurized. When on the ground or taxiing, you might as well be in an overcrowded elevator.

I’m sorry but I don’t NEED anyone to request me to wear a mask, common sense tells me that 1) if I’m sick, stay home and 2) if I can’t than make sure I have plenty of tissues and take medicines to minimize the symptoms. People need to realize that natural virus exposure creates a more robust immune system, so be germaphobic is NOT a good thing. Given that this man made virus was created by people who are using people as guinea pigs, I understand the uncertainty of what to do to protect yourself, I get it. But masks as worn by 99.9 % of people are actually doing MORE harm than good. Planes use silver in their filtration systems-silver kills MRSA.

I’ve long wondered why in all this covid chaos there was zero comparison or education to our mass public that tuberculosis kills millions every year world wide and it’s AIRBORNE. In the United States it is managed well. Public health departments track every tuberculosis case and have for years. They ensure medications are being taken to prevent it from being “active”.

yeah, as someone prone to picking up colds, I was wearing masks on planes for several years before the pandemic. it's not *just* the germs floating around - the cabin air dries out your sinuses and makes you more susceptible to picking up bugs. wearing a mask keeps things a little more moist/normal.

The one part of your comment struck me...it was regarding the nasal passagrpes drying out, CAUSING lower resistance to getting a viral, or bacterial infection. It is SO true. Over thirty years ago, I read an article about a product called Alkolol. It was a nasal drop/spray solution that came in a tall bottle. In the explanation, it stated that when the nasal passages dry out, it is prime time to get infected because the delicate lining of the respiratory tract is subject to germs invading the tissue. Moisture helps the body's ability to get the saliva moving through the natural filters, OUT of the body. I bought a bottle, and did use this product for years. When I couldn't find it, I used plain nasal drops, NOT medicated ones which dry out the passages further. I DON'T get colds. I get allergic reactions to Cottonwood, which cause my eyes to burn, but I have done really well resisting colds. The product includes alcohol to kill germs, and an oil to lubricate the passages. I did find it again, and it now comes in a convenient small plastic squeeze bottle. This concept is so spot on, and a solution could be made DIY using the proper amounts of the ingredients. A cheap and easy fix to avoid the irritating common cold, and other viruses.

THIS. For me personally, masks have always been useful for two things. The first, is temperature control when the air is too cold and dry, so my breath stays moist and warm (important for my asthma, as extremes of humidity or temperature in either direction could cause problems). The other, is for me to keep my own fluids and droplets in my mask when I’m sick so I can reduce the likelihood of infecting others. I personally do not think masks have, in my own experience, prevented me from getting sick from someone else- my first bout of Covid I was in South America and everyone was forced to wear masks all the time under military “toque de queda.” You couldn’t even go downstairs in your own apartment building at street level without wearing a mask because the military and cops were constantly surveilling everyone. For an aerosol spreading disease, unless we’re all wearing astronaut suits eventually everyone is going to get it. I just personally prefer not to sneeze and cough on other people to do what little I can. That being said, there are many valid reasons not to mask- like wanting access to fresh air outdoors, or having respiratory conditions that make it hard to wear (masking is a lot harder for me when it’s hotter weather)

Since of course people are going to eat and drink on a plane it is silly to mandate everyone wear one including CHILDREN. An international flight with your face covered for 13 hours...no thanks. I agree that people that travel when ill (SOMETIMES UNAVOIDABLE necessary travel!) could do better by either choosing themselves to maybe wear a mask or at the least coughing into a cloth. Ventilation onboard planes is quite effective once it is turned on. During boarding, passenger loading, and sitting on the tarmac preparing for takeoff however, the situation is quite different and often very stuffy to the point of being uncomfortable. For higher risk individuals, the immunocompromised, the unvaccinated, and those that care for them, the choice seems pretty clear.

However, the largest risk factor not mentioned in the video is use of/seat assignment near passenger compartment toilets. SARS-COV 2 has been isolated in feces. Computational Fluid Dynamic Analysis (CFD) of the aerosol generation by flushing in the toilet is incredibly large even though there is "suction" in the bowl. Besides if patient zero used the toilet and/or queued up to use the toilet and others queued up near patient zero, they might of received an infectious dose especially since he was in an aisle seat. My rule when flying is don't sit near a toilet or use the toilet.

This could well add to the spread of the virus and give a direction of spread, depending on where the facilitiies were in relation to the index case's seat. You demonstrated how the airflow within a plane helps reduce the spread of viruses. However, the greater potential for spread is when passengers are boarding and debarking the plane when the airflow is typically off. We can all relate to the experience of the plane getting very warm and stuffy when not in flight. It’s during these times I would expect is the greatest chances of spreading a virus.

When I flew {in USA in late Feb 2020) I wore a mask in the airport and on the plane (I'm a chemical engineer so I know about these things inherently, and deduced the benefit would be there just on plain experience with a lifetime of lab testing in such areas) and I will never forget the mean looks and stares I got from people all around me, as if I was deranged. In regards to the return airflow being lower on an airplane. I can't recall if it was on this channel or from someplace like UCSF College of Medicine, but it was an interview with a gentleman who helped design the standards for airplane filtration way back when. The thing that stuck with me was that all those warm bodies cause air to flow upwards as heat rises. When that natural warm airflow meets the cool airflow from the planes ventilation system it can actually cause air to recirculate right around face level. Their point was that ideally the ventilation systems on planes would be reversed, so all of the air is flowing upwards. Something for a future video perhaps.

From personal experience in the construction field when I wear an N-95 mask when sanding drywall compound at the end of the day there is no drywall dust in my nose. When I wear the type mask most often worn on airplanes there is always a white trail of dust around the top of the mask into my nose and my nose and sinuses are filled with drywall dust. Drywall dust particles are much much larger than viruses. A drywall particle is an aircraft carrier compared to a virus being a JetSki.

    Two thoughts:
First, those airpack HEPA filters typically are switched out monthly. So how consistently effective they are over a 30-day span is simply not known. Probably more effective on day one than on day twenty-nine. It's not impossible to imagine they are pretty bad at the end of service, and may even contribute to viral spread rather than prevent it. But who knows?
Second, while an aisle seat may be upstream of the typical HVAC airflow, it is certainly downstream of every last person who walks, talks and coughs as they pass up (and down) the aisle. So, at least, a confounding effect that makes "is a window seat or an aisle seat a safer bet?" very difficult to demonstrate.
I'm still going to wear my mask on board.

My conclusion as well. It does little good to know we're safe in flight when we've already been exposed on ground. It's too late. It takes mere minutes to contract it, as everyone's droplets are lingering everywhere inside, around us.
Dropping the mandate was reckless and irresponsible. It too is discriminating to the immunocompromised/unvaxxed, as they will be unable to travel via public transportation, or simply have to live in fear, and hope for the best. Deplorable! N95's are reliable, but not 100%. It takes all parties to participate to ensure the heath and safety of others.

Frankly, I used to think it was from poor hand hygiene, but it must have been from respiratory droplets or aerosols containing virus particles. I bought a FloMask to travel by air in late December 2022 /Early January 2023. It has a silicone gasket that makes an amazing seal around your face, and has pro filters that aren't certified, but were tested to N95 standards. I felt so confident on those flights. Just based on this flight, your hypothesis that you are less likely to become infected sitting in an aisle seat does NOT hold up. I included both confirmed cases and probable cases as positive and assumed that all cases were infected while on the flight. Of those sitting in a window seat, 7 of 56 passengers became infected for a 12.5% infection rate. Of those sitting in center seats, 5 of 42 passengers became infected for a11.9% infection rate. Of those sitting in an aisle seat (not including the index case) 10 of 42 became infected for a 23.8% infection rate.
The risk for infection for passengers seated in an aisle seat was almost double that of passengers seated in a window seat or center seat. This makes sense when you realize that the infected passenger probably brushed against the passengers in the aisle seats (or might have coughed directly on them) while was getting on or off the plane or transiting between the infected passenger's seat and the restroom. In fact, the clusters of infected passengers might give an indication where the infected passenger was when coughs occurred. If droplets landed on another passenger's clothing, it might not make any difference as to whether or not they were wearing a mask, since hand to clothing or hand to eye contact might have been enough to spread the virus. It would be interesting to know who were wearing masks according to seating assignment.

You are often fatigued, because you sleep poorly the night before, you basically change timezones (really stressful for your system) and skip a night.
I noticed that I always was “feverish” a few days after a plane right.

@@carpe_poon5761 There are different grades of masks, some people do not wear the mask correctly or take them off during the flight. Lock downs should have only been used in brief spells. Where I am from we had brief lock downs and they worked. The problem is some countries left there borders open for too long and the disease spread. Furthermore some people have poor hygiene habits and didn't distance themselves from others. It is difficult to completely stop a highly infectious disease, particularly when people don't want to use some common sense. Masks can be highly effective but the quality of the mask is critical and the attitude of the person who wears it is also extremely important. I lived in two different countries during the pandemic and noticed the difference in attitude. The country which was slow to react did badly overall. But it did get access to vaccines early which seemed to help. The places where outbreaks occurred in the other country occurred due to human laziness - not wearing a mask when required and this lead to lockdowns. Where I am from cases where low and people went about their lives for 70 to 80 percent of the time without worrying about the virus.

@@superlight7654 Places like Australia and countries in Europe had lockdowns up through this winter and riots. People getting beat up by police for going for a walk. Some places saw improvement while others did not. Where I'm from nothing changed during lockdowns except mental health, businesses and the economy. I think lockdowns are not the way bc there's no stopping it. The risk reward just isn't justifiable in my opinion.
I think people did a poor job with the elderly prior to vaccines. If I knew elderly people I'd be conscious of that and social distance, sanitize my hands and phone. But idk how me going to a bar or restaurant puts elderly people at risk, which those are the highest at risk.
People who are around the elderly and or high risk individuals need to take those necessary precautions. If I was a nurse or patient care I'd obviously be taking extra precaution. Sucks for them but that's not my fault. I just didn't see the need for EVERYONE to be stressed and affected by it when it's situational. Everyone's situation are different.
I myself changed nothing about my life since 2019. What I heard on media and social media and what I saw with my eyes were two complete opposites. I wore my fav mask where it was required but that's about it. I worked overtime and everything. But i had no life bc everything was banned. Except boating, we all did our usual boat trips and none of us had any problems.
Nobody I knew died, nobody that I knew even know anyone that died. I can name less than ten people that I know of that even got it, including the present.
The forcing of vaccines to me is a joke. If it's so safe then you have nothing to worry about right, get the vaccine. But no, people obsessed over it and masks and vaccines were required by crazy people flipping out bc it was so politicized.
We took our dog to a dog friendly bar and had our masks on. At the door we were told we couldn't bring the dog in bc of covid🙄
I don't condone throwing a tantrum like some people did and they just couldn't accept it. I'm like it's not a big deal to wear it at the grocery or whatever then take it off outside. Whether you agree with it or not, it's just easier to play nice.
We were mandated at work and that was super annoying. One of my Dr offices still require you to wear masks. That's a bit much I think, especially with so much of the elderly population being vaccinated. And if you have illness or health conditions obviously its good to be vaccinated. I'm 38 and healthy as a horse, I want no part of it.
But there's people that act crazy about pushing masks and vaccines on everyone just like there's crazy people rebelling against it. Just like everything else. I try to walk a middle line with safety and others in mind.
A little bit of common sense and awareness go a long way. Washing hands, keeping distance at necessary times or around elderly people etc. Practice etiquette when you sneeze or cough, sanitize too. I go under my arm or shirt, i never put my hands on my face to cough or sneeze but ive always done that.
I still see people wearing masks. Nothing wrong with that and they don't act a certain way towards me. A guy working at the post office had one on. The ones that drive me nuts are people in their car driving by themselves. Or I've seen people driving convertibles with the top down wearing masks🤣
My parents never got it. My sister and a few of her kids got it, they were fine. They socially distanced and quarantined. Common sense.
I just hate that it's so politicized. They drew a line in the sand and it became like war. If you don't want the vaccine or vax mandates you're a "anti vaxer"(republican). If you're pro masks and pro mandate you're a liberal.

In my view for the "average" person with a normal immune system response it is not a bad idea to have exposure. This is not only from a selfish perspective but also more broadly.
From a societal perspective to maintain a good level of immunity within the population and ensure that it remains a low risk level infection for as much of the population as possible (similar to colds, flu) I see as a positive benefit for all.

The type makes little difference if you are not the index patient. Large clinical trials in hospitals during outbreaks show that ordinary medical masks and N95 respirators resulted in the same number of infections in healthy mask wearers. KN95 is about as good as an ordinary medical mask but with a higher price tag (think of KN95 as a fake N95, CDC once said don't use KN95 if you want 95 but I guess it might depend on the hit and miss of which batch you buy from).
No clinical trials have been tried with cloth masks since no one expects them to have any effect except if the index patient wears one. N95 has extra benefit if you do the full spacesuit garb like they do in COVID-19 wards, the only place where aerosols seem to practically matter.

This information has been something that I have sought since March 2020, so you can imagine how grateful I am now to have you medical appreciation of the situation. When I was traveling by plane fairly regularly, way back before all the stupid anti-terrorist rules and regulations, there were three things I used to do, one: bring my own 1.5 litre plastic, bought flask of good quality mineral water; 2) a towel to lay on the floor while I stretched and elevated my legs while waiting to change flights on the long 22 hr trip; my antivirus oil which I soaked in a facecloth wet with my mineral water and kept over my mouth and nasal passages for the entire trip. Sure it raised a few eyebrows but I bet that saved me many a URTI and the possibility of Venus thrombosis. The biggest problem for me now is not so much the mask wearing but the supply of drink water on the plane. I feel that the way fluids are transported and used on flights that's that is a great source of contagion. And who knows about the quality. I trust my judgement and not the Flight attendant or the company supplying the water.

Are you discussing an N-95 or simple surgical mask? Something very important that we have all forgotten is that there ARE effective out patient medication regimens for prophylaxis and treatment of the virus. Prevention and then treatment would be a common sense approach to managing this and future outbreaks.

What do people have against face masks? Some people would have you believe that wearing a face mask is as painful as wearing high spike-heeled shoes.

People have been primed, or "groomed" (to use a right-wing trigger word), to respond with anger when they see someone wearing a mask. As an example, a newsfox talking head will say, as though they are merely ruminating, that they wonder if children wearing a mask is tantabout to child abuse, and shortly afterward, people are screaming at children & their parents & trying to rip their masks off.
(Waiting now for the "but what about..." trolls)

I think some of the reasons for hating masks is political. I don’t mind wearing a mask. Before vaccine was available, I wore a good quality mask and a clear plastic shield. Both worked. I followed what the nurses wore In hospital. 3 coworker worked next to me with no protection. All 3 died from covid. I never caught it at age of 71. After I got my vaccine, I continue with mask to today but dropped the shield. I have kept all of shields in case it ever get as worse again.

Pretty uncomfortable with glasses, hearing aids, wigs etc. and also if you're a person like me with allergies who has to keep lifting the mask to wipe my nose to stop it getting soggy!

I have my natural immune system so what is need for mask?
I follow all immune boosting recommendation from Dr.Seheult from day one.
I didn't wear it all this time and had asymptomatic infection few times ( I seen it in rise and fall of antibody count ) so I just let my natural system work and learn new virus ...
And when in my country government finally let us all to make natural immunization ( in one period streets where almost completely empty as almost 60% working populatio0n was at home with SARS-2 positive test- of course they automatically did immunized their complete household ) pandemic went to it's end .
We are all descendent of people which survive all kind of really deadly viruses and bacteria ( CFR 30-60% ) so why be upset with 0,5% CFR virus ?

Thank you! Very helpful. As a massage therapist, I am going to require masks if I continue to see people. Spas are not keeping people safe and are not requiring masks, which is really unfortunate. A mask is not political, it is to keep people healthy and my life matters. I should not have to choose between a paycheck and my health, but jobs seem to want to ignore science for a dollar.

We have immune systems. Never in the history of time have we lived in this kind of fear. People have been getting sick and building their own defenses for hundreds of years. You would do better focussing on building that.
If you aren’t wearing an N95 it’s completely pointless. Very few people can even handle wearing that kind. Please use your brain and stop being led by fear.
