You can question almost every study.
RCTs may not actually be the best source of evidence for determining whether masks confer protection. “Strictly speaking, they're correct that there's no statistically significant effect,” said Ben Cowling, an epidemiologist at the University of Hong Kong whose research is cited in the Cochrane review. “But when you look at the totality of evidence, I think there's a pretty good indication that masks can protect people when they wear them.”
In particular, Cowling said, mechanistic studies-like those conducted with mannequins-do offer strong evidence that respirators cut down on the passage of viral particles.
Huang, the Penn biostatistician, is among others who argue that, in many RCTs examining mask use, the sample sizes are just too small. Even if masks are effective, that may not show up as a statistically meaningful result. “When the effect is moderate, or small, we really need a large sample size to find a significant difference,” said Huang. Many of these RCTs, she said, simply weren’t large enough to find some potentially meaningful signal.
And even if the effect is modest, during peak periods of a pandemic, small advantages can have a large impact by reducing the number of sick patients seeking hospital care at the same time. “From a public health perspective," said Cowling, "reducing the reproductive number by even 10 percent could be valuable."
For a complex issue like masks, Trish Greenhalgh is among other researchers who suggest that an RCT may be an imperfect tool. “I'm not against RCTs,” said Greenhalgh, a physician and health researcher at the University of Oxford. “But they were never designed to look at complex social interventions."
Greenhalgh is an influential figure in the evidence-based medicine movement-her book How to Read a Paper: The Basics of Evidence-Based Medicine and Healthcare is in its sixth edition-but she has at times been critical of what she characterizes as an overreliance on RCTs. Greenhalgh characterized some of her colleagues as, in effect, RCT hardliners-focused on RCTs at the expense of considering other kinds of evidence. In that mindset, she said, “it seems that an RCT, however bad, is better than an observational study, however good."
Cochrane’s own leadership seems to share some of those concerns. In November 2020, when Jefferson’s team published an earlier version of their review, Cochrane published an accompanying editorial, warning policymakers to move cautiously with the results, and not to interpret them as definitive evidence that masks and respirators don’t work. Instead, the group wrote, “there may never be strong evidence regarding the effectiveness of individual behavioral measures.”

Water droplets are much heavier than air and go straight towards your mask that then catches them. They do not go sideways like the gases.

Before I retired from the military I used to teach Chem, Bio, Rad, and Nuclear protection/survival. I added mask as an example in my contamination avoidance presentation. I was always in shock after years of COVID on how many people didn’t understand contamination avoidance vs 100% protection when it came to the mask.

At 2:22, the sneezing video comparison omits showing a more typical non-masked sneeze - into an elbow, handkerchief, or hands. Also, the Cochrane review found that hand washing has some effect, and masks probably don't, so that suggests that transmission by contact is more common.

Effectiveness studies ask: Does the intervention work in real-world practice? As such, one would be assessing the effectiveness and not efficacy in a community, since the community is not an ideal condition but a real-world condition.

Source control is the way that masks are used in hospitals, TB patients wear the mask. Infectious patients wear masks.
For immunocompromised patients the potential source of infection are the healthcare workers, hence they wear masks and other PPE.
Irrespective of the efficacy of masks in source control there’s one underlying assumption and that is asymptomatic transmission. The U.K. government statement when introducing mask mandates was to assume that you are infected & infectious even without symptoms. Obviously there’s a lag between being infected and showing symptoms such as coughing and sneezing, for measles this is two to four days before the defining rash develops, but the child will be unwell 2-4 days before the rash thanks to the innate immune system. Has the viral load of asymptomatic people been assessed?

There should've been a study of the homeless. They live tragic lives that typically make them vulnerable however in the case of a virus outbreak they might do better because of the fact that they're usually breathing outside air. I don't know if any such studies were conducted but if they were and there was a measurable reduction in infection rates and or favorable outcomes once infected it would at least serve to prove the benefit of ventilation. In short, open a window.
Clown......you don't understand any of this do you. Where is your evidence or indeed any governments evidence that wearing masks stop the spread of claimed infections? An assertion and assumptions are not enough. What papers and studies are you relying on to assert these claims? For me I start with Neil Orrs study for the RCS in 1976 over 6 months regarding post operative infection where surgeons either wore or did not wear masks.

Cochrane Study was good. The US did not do a RCT on masks. In the OR, masks are worn to prevent droplets. However the virus will still spread unless you're wearing a gas or respirator rated for poisonous gases. I was trained to work in contaminated environments.
Only one human challenge study on covid-19 has been done, and it didn't involve masks.

Hello! In an earlier video you stated that with a mask a lower dosage of droplets will be released thus if someone was infected their symptoms would be lessened. I compare it to drinking a little poison and getting ill or more poison and dying. Well my friends son is a PA and told him that no matter the amount exposed you will get the same degree of symptoms. What is the correct answer if any?

With this Virus, your friend's son may be right. Some people's immune system handles covid better than others.
So if two people would get the equal amount of virus the same Way, they might react very differently.

also, to use your poison analogy ...... there would need to be varying critical mass of poison to 1) have sufficient reaction that a person would note symptoms, 2 become ill, 3) become severely ill, 4) become critically ill, 5) become dead. For each different poison those critical masses are different........and every human is entirely unique ( and variable in terms of immune readiness).
This all suddenly becomes way too difficult to estimate with any accuracy & certainty or confidence for any single individual or event.
So we have to go with averages based on research data for certain parameters - which in this case might include: number of people, age, comorbidities, activities, environment type/size, temperature, humidity, ventilation, proximity, duration, mask type etc etc (I'm winging it here, I haven't read all the links posted in the description yet)

You're both a bit wrong. There are strong indications that you'd need a minimum viral dose to get infected. After that, the symptoms will rely mainly on personal characteristics, as the virus has now infected you and is multiplying so fast that it doesn't matter all that much whether 1 million or 10 million viral particles gained entry.

The least effected group the children 45 k hospitalized , 10 k in ICU an additional 9k had severe complication called MIS- C . Add to this long COVID . All these can be easily saved via vaccine. So any idea why antivaxers are so cruel that they don’t want these children and adults saved ?

it's possible that masks make a small difference. The Bangladesh mask study, probably among the best we have, shows a small effect at best and "Yes, masks still work" is big claim with very little evidence.

It is next to impossible to deduce which amount of the reduction of covid cases was based on masks and which amount on better personal hygiene, social distancing, and other changes in one's behavior - note that in the mentioned paper The Impact of Community Masking on COVID-19: A Cluster- Randomized Trial in Bangladesh, it was only the intervention group which was given advice and warnings against the pandemia, not the control group.
See: "In fact, we found that our intervention increased the likelihood of physical distancing, presumably because individuals participating in the intervention took the threat of COVID-19 more seriously." - undoubtedly, they did.

I don't think there has been a study on using N95s properly fitted along with other mitigating options like certain types of mouthwash and nasal applications. It would be interesting to see the results of such a study. It would need to be a controlled one of course, properly executed and funded by unbiased parties.
Many studies I have read about clearly shows significant efficacy of N95s. But yes, the number of clinical trials are pathetically few given the importance of the matter.

Genuinely curious, but how deadly does a disease have to be before community masking should be mandated or encouraged? What threshold did COVID hit that other previous viruses did not. I know people wore them when sick themselves or around immune compromised people maybe, but is COVID unique in asymptomatic spread?
That is a great question. We have been hit with Virus's before but never forced to wear masks. This latest virus wasnt deadly at all or they delibrately allowed it to spread with soiled masks made from homemade cloth or something simple like a paper mask. If it was deadly the authorites would have blue hazmat bins on every sidewalk and in every business. They allowed people to put their virus soaked mask on every surface around them. This caused the virus to spread.. The Mask allowed them to know who was compliant and who was not and it allowed the virus to spread to every surface humans touch.
@@amyalewine oh exactly. Every mask should’ve been tossed after a few hours of use or washed to even have a small effect. Hanging masks on your rear view mirror, or in cup holders is doing nothing. Masks were always a way to make “essential” workers feel protected as the laptop class got to stay home. People might argue that they had to give the public something to find comfort in, when in reality it should’ve been “anything less than a fresh N95 should not be used for long durations.” Because if you don’t, when they’re shown to not help you will have lost public trust. Public health only has so many bullets before people stop trusting your interventions. They could at least come out and clarify the initial interventions so people can feel like lessons were learned and it won’t be tried/mandated again.
When the virus was serious enough that the R number mattered. Masking, social distancing and hand washing drastically dropped the number of cold and flu cases during covid but these aren't serious enough on their own to require a mandate.
The question is, how much do we value human lives and whose lives are most valuable and whose are least valuable? It's all a money equation. What value does the life have? All the rest is irrelevant. Like with abortion, it does not matter anything at all except the VALUE of the potential child by the mother. That's it. That's the only question, the only answer.

Let me offer some amateur anecdotal information about masks. I invested in some respirator masks early in the pandemic. 1 full face and 1 half face. I bought a variety of filters for the full face mask which is the one I wear when I leave my home. I'm semi-retired so my trips out aren't often these days and those masks have served me well. Anyhow when I got that mask I first placed the basic particle filter on and then thought I might as well use one of the premium filter types because I had bought some of those as well even though I wasn't working with all those gases and such listed on their descriptions. I'm glad I did because one day as I was going through my doffing procedure after wearing it I noticed something that I wasn't expecting. You see when I undressed I would throw all the clothes right into the washing machine and I had added bleach as a disinfectant and I would remove my mask last. Well as soon as I removed the mask I got this immediate powerful smell of bleach and I may have been standing right over the washer. I remember thinking how interesting that Inhad just had that open bottle of bleach right in front of me and didn't smell it at all. I have continued to use that mask and those filters and periodically do the smell test including placing items with strong fragrances right up close to the filter and Indont smell them. My point is that there are filters and then there are filters and just like masks, type matters, quality matters as well as using them correctly. Check your equipment do your seal checks don and doff properly and be careful about touching your face. I read the comments from all the mask deniers about keeping bee's out of your yard with a chain link fence but they don't take other factors into account such as how the tiniest particles actually travel such as piggybacking on larger particles. They also don't take into account certain mask features like non-woven electrostatically charges materials and Brownian motion of tiny particles making them more likely to cling to the fibers than just pass through in linear direction. I've done a lot of research on maks during the pandemic and I see too many people commenting on the matter who have done little or no research. I'm not a scientist and neither are most of us but the beauty of the internet is that we now have access to limitless scientific research and it's free so take advantage of it. I look at the scientific recommendations for instance for lab workers rather than focus on what healthcare workers are wearing. If the people that understand these pathogens don't mess with them without proper PPE then neither should you if you want the same level of protection. I realize that the ordinary citizen won't be tethered to a supplied air system but that BSL4 level and I know that Covid research has not been restricted to level 4. I think BSL3 is more common and I've read where some research was conducted at level 2 but I'm not sure if that makes sense. As far as I can tell BSL3 workers are mobile and not tethered or wearing the bubble suits but rely on portable filtered PAPR systems which is hepa filtration. Beyond that of course they wear gloves and presumably carry out proper donning and doffing procedures. You might not want to invest in a PAPR system but you can buy the same quality of filtration for your respirator masks and they're in ample supply now and aren't very expensive. I understand many people don't wear any masks and that's fine. It's an individual choice and I on,y go out I frequently so it's not like. somebody who is working full time or going to school. I can't imagine wearing tight fitting masks every day and trying to work like that. Anyhow I'm glad that the public has access to quality affordable PPE should they choose to use it. I wouldn't rely on a cloth or surgical mask unless my only concern was not to spread it. As far as preventing getting it N95'masks and their international counterparts would be the minimum I would consider.

Man, where I live, we were wearing masks only when there were elders around. Apart from that we didn't give a fuck about wearing masks during Covid pandemic. We have flu season several times every year and probably our collective immune system still works. I know nobody who died because of COVID and I know a lot of people.

Fwiw…. We do things all the time that typically have relatively small protective consequences … like vitamins, statins, low dose aspirin, organic food, throwing out expired food, going to the gym, wearing seat belts, buying home insurance, praying…. Etc.

For me it just made sense that if the virus is carried on spittle and we know we all spit when we just speak that putting something over your mouth so you reduce the spit and having it cover your nose so less spit reaches it was a good thing to do. After the virus mutated and turned into basically a cold I stopped wearing one for most things. I still use them when I fly or am in close contact with large groups but just banging around town I don’t bother with them.

It seems that: Masks just work, we dont know how we dont know why and we sure as hell dont want to complicate this by bringing in details that would challenge the mere fact that mask do work. The Cochrane review paper has over 300 pages and few people bother to read it. I did. (I am a PhD scientist working in biotech for 20+ years.) The paper cited mostly publications from before 2020, which are not direct related to covid19 (speaking of evidence based medicine!). The few papers it cited from post 2020 are showing or at least suggesting efficacy of n95 masks for preventing covid19. There are many many more papers from original clinical trials showing efficacy of n95 against covid. The results are somehow excluded by the review for whatever reasons. I have read some of the original papers too. I personally trust the original papers more than the reviews and the meta analyses (review on review), which are subject to interpretation bias and potentially something much darker. If the "anti-maskers" are skeptical about the CDC and the FDA, they surely should be skeptical about the Cochrane review. Plus the Cochrane review did not say that n95 mask is not effective against covid19.
I’m sure I could learn a lot from you and if you’re in the field and say masks are effective, then I’m not going to doubt you in the slightest. My question is if masks are effective at mitigating the spread of viral or respiratory droplets, why weren’t Americans encouraged to wear masks prior to 2020? Specifically during virulent flu seasons of the past? It seems like we would have seen people wearing masks during peak winter months, even back in the 90s for instance. It also seems that masks would have been required in crowded places during prior flu outbreaks such as bird flu in 2004.
@@tbc9096 I think that you raise an important question. Cold and flu viruses are always present and being spread. If masks work, then they save lives, since people can die from severe cold and flu. The reason that mask mandates are not permanent, lifelong mandates, is because people judge that the cost outweighs the benefits - the cost being lower quality of life. Reasonable people can disagree about the cost versus the benefit for using masks during a pandemic too.

Well you are making the classic mistake of conflating infection with disease they are not the same thing. This conflation is used by antivaxers and anti maskers to show without doubt that neither work when in fact if you have high infection and lower disease after vaccination and other non pharam measures this shows that things are working.
So how do we know that those infections did not come from those not wearing a mask? How do we know if those infections were not from close contacts such as family or same household residents?
We do know for a fact that the level of exposure to the virus effects the level of infection and thus the level disease presentation and severity.
As face masks (what ever they are made of) reduce the droplet and aerosol count we know this will effect the level of exposure and thus reduce the incidence of disease. We know this because we actually have a formula for it.

Sir it may benefit the layperson if you add to the video tag/title " source control " for that is predominantly the context of your video. It would also be more transparent to your audience, had your animated sample clips of a slow motion sneeze ( depicting exhaled particles ) were expanded in view to include the entire length of the mask during a sneeze event. A better overall view depicting how particles can escape from the top, bottom & sides of a mask would yield a clearer visual picture of the extent of particles escaping into the surrounding airspace. The manner of expelled particles via a host's oral cavity & the full extent of particle introduction into the environment ( which is relative to the use of a cloth or surgical / procedural mask ) would be better represented with the entire mask in focus, nevermind that both types of masks are being worn properly. Note, airborne transmission has often been attributed to infectious droplet nuclei produced by the desiccation of suspended droplets, which was thought to occur only for tuberculosis & a few other pathogens. Thus, surgical masks have consistently been recommended for " source control " against most respiratory infections originating within a human host. I have an autoimmune disorder and have been aggressively masking, laying low, only doing curbside, not dining out. I've gotten every available booster offered to the immune vulnerable group. I haven't caught it, at all. It's really frustrating to see how many people died or caught long covid. It never had to be like this.

The reason masks don't work is that they accumulate water droplets and concentrates the aerosol virus, then distribute them at droplets which have greater infection potential than aerosols.
The droplet vs aerosol issue has been debated and studies for years, and the conclusion is masks are not appropriate for respiratory viruses.

The reason you can see the "breath" of that person coming out is because the expelled gas at body temperature (mainly water vapor) quickly condenses when exposed to cold outside temperatures to form liquid particles. You're looking at liquid particles, not just a gas! The same particles in the form of "droplets" and "aerosols" that carry the viruses, like you correctly say later. These particles are small enough to escape the mask, even if a part of them is retained. "They behave like tiny droplets of liquid", what do you mean by that? If you have a violent stream of gas being expelled from your body, via coughing or sneezing, the liquid droplets, being so microscopic, behave almost like gas particles and can even escape through the pores of the mask, not to mention the sides of the mask.
I see your point........but the fact remains that its still a gas, right up to the point it spills out from the side of the mask, meeting cold air and condensing. As a gas it cannot support transport of shedding virions, only droplets & (to a lesser extent) aerosols can do this.
Yes, I understand that the violence/velocity of a sneeze/cough could force some of the droplets out through the sides of a mask, but how much? probably not much......and the energy disipation in the mask will probably prevent those escaped droplets going far enough to be a significant risk.

I get your point about droplets with virus being propelled by the rapid breath expulsion of coughs/sneezes......and yes there is potential for small amounts of that virus to escape sideways from the mask edges, by which point it will have lost its kinetic energy and fall with gravity. Can aerosols pass through the pores in the mask? Yes, that's possible. But you need to take into account 1) at the microscopic level the edges of those pores are not smooth & perfect - they are deliberately fibrous to maximise surface area without compromising air flow, & to catche edges of droplets passing through 2) masks are generally multi-layered and the pores are unlikely to be in alignment & are often different materials/textures, changing the pore size, shape & pattern. 3) when we encounter infections one of the first innate immune responses is increased mucous production, to trap any microbes in respiratory tract. Mucous is inherently sticky, which helps masks to snag expelled droplets. 4) any droplets with virus getting through a mask will have lost their momentum and fall with gravity, aerosols may be circulated with air movement in ventilated spaces......but these are far less of an issue than visible globs of mucous sneezed several meters without a mask .
Are masks perfect?.....no of course not, but the video shows clips of sneezes/coughs both with & without masks & the difference in spray is clear to see.

I've studied a bunch about air filtration, primarily home cleaners and vaccumes that use HEPA filters. HEPA filtration is pretty amazing. I mean, it was used to prevent nuclear contamination in the 40s during the manhattan project. But I have seen countless tests in labs using aerosols that use a proxy virus. I have seen the data that these machines can reduce the viral load in the air. I know from real world experience that the air is easier to breathe (i suffer from moderate asthma), there is less dust, and my allergies reduce drastically. I have experienced the same with an n95 mask. Not just that. There is a reason carpenters and construction workers use respirators: it keeps out the dust, mold, fiber glass and other shit that gives you cancer, out of your lungs. Hell, a whole country has been wearing them since 1919 to reduce transmission of the flu, it's called japan. I'm sorry, it's not that big of a deal. Grow up and put on your cheap health insurance policy.

Good review. I realized that it is harder to study the effect of masks in the community than I originally thought. Did people keep them on, and for how long, who else was in the room, how many were infected, did they all wear masks appropriately, what was the ventilation like, were people breathing heavily, did people take masks on/off all the time, etc. So many complicating factors. However, it's clear from the video that 'source control' is obviously the main goal. Thank you!
A good (or bad) example was the study done in Denmark pretty early in the pandemic: supermarket personnel wearing a mask during working hours and then measure infection rates. Not much different (actually, a little lower, but not significantly so, but this could easily be due to the low numbers of infections overall at that time in Denmark anyway), but the study did not check how well they wore their mask, and whether they also worse their mask outside of the supermarket setting. Which meant you had mostly young people hopefully doing what they were supposed to do while at work where they have very limited close contact with people (there were distancing rules in place, too) and then going home where they likely lived in close quarters with others without wearing a mask.

The media screams Covid in the air but never mentions covid covering the masks along with every other bacteria that growns on warm damp mask. How can the CDC lock the country down over a virus they know little about but allow people to contaminated every survice the damp masks touches. It is terrible to see how the media scares peoples with the covid virus, lock them down yet allow masks to spread Covid along with other harmful bacteria strains. Doctors and nurses can change their masks to new ones daily, yet no one on the media is telling people to do the same.
It's a lot easier to follow when it is oversimplified. This whole visible droplet thing is an irrelevant "low hanging fruit" distraction that has almost nothing to do with the spread of aerosol coronavirus. Of course any mask made from toilet paper can catch visible booger-drops, even with Dr Wilson's beard that stops a mask from sealing at all at those edges, but that large stuff was never the major vector of transmission; that large stuff has tremendous inertia, so it is hard to inhale, as low velocity air (typical of inhalation) moves around it. Try this at home: get a water spritzer, a flashlight, and a vaccum, and see if either your inhalation or the much more powerful suction of the vaccum has an easy time sucking in any droplets.
When you do manage to inhale some droplets because they were already immediately in front of your mouth or nostril, its inertia makes it fly straight into the walls of your mouth or the hairs of your nose, instead of following along with the air to the most sensitive tissues (like aerosol). Droplets also get out of the air faster, because they respond well to gravity. It is the aerosols, which are astronomically greater in number, that make up most of the source of infection. Even the best face masks only filter a fraction of the tiny aerosols exhaled by an infected person. The long term efficacy of a mask is not its momentary filtration value; a mask that filters 70% of the aerosol virus will never result in 70% less infections, hospitalizations, and deaths, any more than a bullet-proof vest that reduced the chance of death from a single bullet by 70% could protect a person from starting multiple fights with armed people every day, indefinitely. At some point, probably after just a few shots, that 70% protection will be gone, and a corpse will be wearing a bullet-proof vest.
Surgeons have worn masks forever and no one says a thing until THEY have to wear it? So when you get sick and have to go in for surgery, I suppose you don't want your surgeon wearing one and getting all in his way and making things all stuffy for him while he's doing surgery on you?

@@DavidJones-ke6kt They wear masks in order to protect themselves against any blood splashing on them also, but they also go to very great lengths to not spread infectious agents to someone who will be recovering from surgery. The scrubbing and the gloves all that. But that doesn't really answer the question. Suppose there's a surgeon who'd prefer to risk it because the mask makes him less comfortable during what is sometimes, extremely long procedures. Often 5, 8 hours and even longer. 16 hours is not unheard of.

You try to prove the efficacy of a mask with particles 10.000 times bigger than viruses and then you completely ignore the fact that a breath holds about 3 liters while the mask holds less than 300ml. Most of every breath simply leaves the mask unfiltered through gaps.
While it is true that by wearing a mask you won´t sneeze or cough someone in the face, it won´t make a difference in any setting that keeps you on your spot for more than 5 minutes, like public transport, offices, recreational settings etc.
Also, most people don´t wear their masks like a puppet in a lab. The masks in such labs are glued to the face of the puppets. Most people do not even care about the nose bridge or even deliberately leave that as open as possible for easier breathing.
MASKS ARE USELESS, they don´t change anything on the population level, which makes mask mandates useless and illegal.
If someone is able to wear his maks perfectly he is free to do so

My 89 year old grandmother who can barely walk a without her walker and barely goes out came to my cousins wedding which was a group of around 80 people with no mask. You're a coward. Stay inside and never come out because who knows what disease is next. If you are so afraid why do you even do anything in life because who knows what's around the corner?

True that a properly fitted N95 or better may reduce breathing in/out virus laden microdroplets. But none of the guidlin3s or mandates(the point of all of this discussion) ever required these high quality masks. Apples and Oranges. Also as others have pointed out, source control of a cough or sneeze is nearly impossible with a casually worn daily mask. In other words, not really effective in the moment most needed. It's these limitations and the various situational and environmental parameters that make the required use of masks little more than theater. I propose that the false sense of security of mask guidelines puts vulnerable ppl at risk. It's too complex an issue to really be used as a PH mandate or guideline. Can they help reduce viral shedding/inhaling? Sure. Do they remove enough virions to make a difference in practice? Doubtful. User beware.

At 5:05, the set of three bar graphs could possibly be more unhelpful. There are too many casual observers, who would look at the two pairs of bars on the right, see that the light blue bar represents how treatment resulted in a lower percentage of something bad, but the left-hand pair shows treatment associated with a higher percentage - and assume that's bad, too.
This could have been avoided easily, with the same method grocery stores present 15% fat ground beef as "85% lean." Just graph the other part of the sample group. It's not difficult or deceptive.

I know quite a bit more about masks than most people.
I use them for work, I have a selection of full-face respirators, half-mask respirators, disposable N95s, and N99s, a whole swathe of different types of 40mm filters, and several CBRN suites.
MASKS WORK JUST FINE. Just like they have been doing for nearly a century. In fact they are getting better every year.
The problem with these epidemiological studies of people en masse, is that they only highlight one thing ... people are not trained in PPE, how infection works, and how to use masks.
For example.
Joe Rando wears a mask religiously.... outside the house.
His kids dont wear masks.
Every night he comes home, the family unit sits on the couch, and if any family member is infected, they will all get infected.
And please note that children in school certainly appeared to be the number 1 vector during the start of the pandemic. Asymptomatic kids were the rats in the ghetto spreading the plague as it were.

I could write a study on the failings of mask use and why people use them wrong and then get infected. Giving a person a rifle does not make them a soldier. PPE needs PPE training! If people aren't wearing them correctly, changing them often, and not constantly touching them! It's a disaster.
And masks only catch larger droplets! Droplets do not linger, as they're not aerosol. Masks do not prevent the aerosols. (Regardless of worn correctly or not)

So technically yes they “work” on a specific individual basis for a specific amount of time but for 100 different reasons it’s not going to stop people getting Covid, eventually. If you lived alone, worked alone and didn’t associate with others and masked up constantly you may be able to avoid a Covid infection but what percentage of the population are we talking here? 1-5?% max. The main point is that at a society level they don’t do much at all.

@@MysMystery13 I don't know if they do or not however when evaluating the effectiveness of masks one must consider the mask type and quality as well as how and when they're being used. These studies can indeed be flawed because of those factors. When the examples of droplet versus aerosol are raised measured against the mask density for instance there is a simplistic view expressed by some that a mask trying to block a virus particular is like trying to keep bee's out of one's yard by installing a chain link fence. What that analogy doesn't take into account however is that some masks have special characteristics that others do not and that the tiniest virus particles move in a fashion that larger ones don't. You might hear for example that the filtration of a premium filter is listed to trap particles down to .3 microns in size and that the virus is smaller than that so therefore the filter is useless however some droplets are larger than that and the tiniest virus particles move in a manner effected by Brownian motion. In other words they are so tiny that they effected by the slightest interference like a mild breeze for instance. That causes them to move in a very non-linear fashion. Imagine it bouncing to and fro in all directions. What that does is to make it more likely to be trapped by a good filter rather than just pass through. Some experts say that it's not the tiniest particles that are the concern and not those larger than .3 microns but the particles that are in between those sizes. The other thing to consider is the mask type such as an N95 compared to a cloth mask or a surgical mask. The N95 has an electrostatic charge whereas the others do not which creates a clingier material to trap particles and it's made with non-woven fabric which is also preferred to woven fabric.

I wear a mask because I am very sensitive to pollen and pollution not to mention I have a chronic cough and just don't want to be coughing on people. It's kinda nasty really. I have bad sinuses and lots of post nasal. ENT says surgery is the only way out. So I will cough for months on end and it's horrible. Just don't want to be coughing on people and spitting on them. My mask cuts down on crap irritating my mucus membranes as well. That's why I also use a very good hepa filter in the house to get all the dander, pollen, dust etc. I also once burned my lungs pretty bad while cleaning my tub -- I used too much bleach and the fumes burned my lungs and they hurt and I was in terrible coughing bad way for like 4 or 5 days. I should have probably gone to the doctor. I totally fucked that one up. Should have worn a proper mask for the job. I also do art and use spray fixative (artists will know what that is) and I can't breath that in, either. So a mask is used. Also allergic to furry animals and pets. Can't have those around or visit friends who have them :( I turn into an oozing sputum itch fest. Ever feel intense itching in both ears so like you wanted to shove a baby bottle brush in there to scratch it? That's what it was like. Using a mask has helped SOOO much. Allergy season doesn't disable me anymore. I save money on lipstick (whoo and not eating it off my lips anymore, it's quite waxy and nasty), people won't judge my face as much (introverts unite) and when it's cold, my breath keeps my nose warm and thus it doesn't end up all runny. (Cold air is dry and makes your nose produce mucus to stay wet, hence those runny snot noses in winter). And then of course there's the ninja in me who enjoys people not knowing what I look like. It's kind of neat to be a little anonymous. I don't wear surgical ones, though. I don't find they help keep out pollen or dander etc. it gets right in. I also like being different . Now that everyone isn't wearing a mask, you're all the sheep and I'm the unique one :)
Three points which I think people on the street would struggle with understanding the use of masks... One is that they would say they or someone they knew wore masks and still got covid / a cold. As you were pointing out, it's likely the are misunderstanding that it's more about preventing infection *from* people who are wearing masks and have an illness, rather than stopping *you* getting infected when you have a mask on. It helps, but it's not a cure all.
A second issue is that people still struggle to wear masks properly. They let their nose hang out or take it off for hours at a time in a risky environment, like an indoor, poorly ventilated and cramped restaurant, or at a gym, or inside public transport, or a nightclub, or other high risk areas. A mask won't protect you (or others) if it's not worn correctly, or not worn at all.
Finally, people do have concerns when wearing masks. It can make it a little bit harder to breath, though sometimes that's more a psychological rather physical limitation from the mask. There is a cost involved. Someone has to pay for a mask. If budgets are tight it can seem like it is not worth the hassle or expense of buying them. It also means that people may need to speak up while wearing a mask. It can muffle your voice and also redirects sound to you, so your own voice sounds louder to you than to other people. But those are just minor problems, compared to getting sick or worse. :-(

@@maraisleroux2717 If you aren't at a fast food restaurant, it's kind of standard to order and wait for several minutes, a great time to be masked. Also when you pay your bill, you don't normally need to put stuff in your mouth at that time and are walking past other tables. Another fantastic time to use a mask. Use some common sense.
