There is one problem, I could not solve: if my melody goes a-b-c in the key of C and the chord is Dm7. The associated 6-deminished-Scale would be F6, which contains *Bb* on the deminished chord. How does that work together with *B* in the melody? *Example:* "fly me to the moon" Right in the first line: "let me play among the stars". *'let me'* sings *a* and *c* over Dm7. If there was a passing note *b* - Maybe a triplet a-b-c... ???
As someone who has been studying Barry's method about 3 years now, I have to say this is the best single video I've seen on his method. Congratulations. This will keep me busy the rest of my life!
After having dealt with Barry Harris concepts for about a year, I came across this video. On first watching I became absolutely sure some superhuman and also superphilanthropic intelligence entered the body of this young handsome guy. I simply still cannot believe that what is shown here can be mastered so thoroughly by a human being that age. Simply mindblowing, true mastery.
dude, i was laughing half way through. it all sounds super cool and i understand the basics after the first pass but it's a lot and that's coming from someone who's a massive theory nerd.

I’ve just found out about the sixth diminished world and using it for piano and I really love the way it pumps a melodic line full of movement. Haven’t quite gotten to the contrapuntal and drop voicings yet but man you’ve got it down. Watching you do the “or you can do this” and then play it perfectly like 20x in a row just shows how much you’ve worked on this. Seriously, you’re a phenomenal musician.
This was one of the most in-depth lessons on harmony in general and a well thought out and clear demonstration of Barry Harris' genius I have ever seen. On top of that you expertly demonstrated the concepts showing us all how well practiced you are. Bravo brother! I'm a fan! I went to many Barry Harris' classes back in the early 90's. This helps bring it all together.
Such a great lesson. I 've been looking everywhere on youtube for a concise introduction to Barry Harris 6th diminished scale & approach but what I found before this left me frustrated, confused and not feeling up to the task. This video single handedly made me feel less intimidated by the approach and eager to delve deeper. Thank you, Robbie!! (I will 100% be subscribing to your Patreon)
Thanks for watching and for the nice comment! Glad you found it helpful, there certainly is so much to discover with this concept. Every part of the Barry Harris community is incredible, I feel this knowledge is more important than we might realize. Please, by all means, keep them coming.
This is by far the best lesson I've had in 20 years! Sad that I'm only now discovering it. Dear Robbie, I am really impressed with your incredible talent as a guitarist, but also for conveying this complex matter so clearly!! Pure Gold ❤🔥! Thank you for sharing this!
I dream of a world where Internet is filled out just by quality videos like this one. I've been scratching my head on so many Barry Harris videos, and I must say yours is really a more condensed but also much more clearer wrap up of most of them (even though I'll have to pause the video at some point to prevent brain overheating). Thank you so much for the sharing, the skills, and even the quality of the video itself. Cheers from Paris, France.
As a piano player, found this to be incredibly helpful. Not being formally trained, I was still able to hear many of Barry’s harmony concepts. I’m still miles away from understanding the entire 6th diminished scale concept…but have gained a better appreciation and fascination for harmonic movement and improv ideas using this approach. Thanks!
@@RobbieBarnby My Pleasure, Robbie! Barry is a friend and mentor of mine and I am always happy when someone presents his material - specially as complete and clear as you did. Your channel is a great source of condensed knowledge!
I was introduced to Barry Harris's methods several years ago and still find that there's ever more to learn. Once you understand one thing it opens the door to so many others that you never really reach an end point.
Haven't commented on any music tuition video before but this is such an amazing explanation and resource you've put together. So many concepts carefully explained and amazing musicianship in the examples given. Years of practice ideas here! It is such a beautiful and complete theory of harmony. Amazing stuff - keep the content coming!

I'm with everyone else who said this is one of the most masterful lessons on any music concept I've ever seen. Years of study here and you are casually a master at it. The piece at the end was wonderful. To my ear it's like these are the secrets of Joe Pass. This is how he was thinking. Your piece at the end reminded me very much of his Virtuoso album tracks. And this sound in general is very much what you'd find in his playing in particular. Thank you for your amazing work and I will get to work learning these concepts and this way of looking at music.
Thank you SO much for this video. I have scoured the net for an in-depth explanation on this topic, and this video is the BEST one. I have watched the Barry Harris videos and it's not as good as this was. You are an excellent teacher, your videos are concise, well organized and entertaining, but most importantly, they are practical. This video is for the advanced jazz players. I have been using these chords to create movement and harmony in my playing over the years but never knew the theory behind why they worked; your theoretical explanation regarding the negation of the five chord, or the 6th on the 5th concept gave me an UH HUH moment. I used to always use the five as a spring board to go outside, when I wanted to on a two five one, now I have got memorize some go too notes. Thx again.

This is wonderful. Lovely tone. Barry tells great stories always resolves it with "art just outplayed those cats ". I'd imagine he did he is a window into different group of legends. I love Miles, Coltrane, dolphy, Wayne, geez everyone but he gives you a glimpse into an established industry that a young miles would enter at night after julliard. So fascinating. Gorgeous playing there is some Django Reinhardt sounds in scale for sure can see how dynamic it is. So many use it in so many ways
I love everything about this. I’ve learned so much useful stuff already, having watched it once. I especially love the smirk on RB’s face throughout. As if he’s thinking silly thoughts the entire time he’s dropping knowledge. Thanks for all of it!
Quite true. Great knowledge I am gaining. I am an 8th Grade Trinity pianist. I love jazz too and was fed up with all the theory gained. Now I can put my theory into practise at last!

I keep coming back to figure out something I didn't get last time. I'll be getting bits and pieces and learning from this for a long time. Thanks, A LOT, Barry!
This is by far the most informative video. What’s fantastic, also is, you’re teaching a system of harmony that has been passed down and instilled in you. This is so rich in practical theory and has developed by Barry Harris’s life time of music and his passion for teaching and transmitting his career of knowledge in the most powerful language the human race has at its grasps. You’re a great translator and teacher Robbie. Cheers!!!
Wow! My music studies for the rest of 2021 are mapped out by this video. Thanks for putting the time into this. It's so comprehensive and well explained. The music notation and tablature are perfectly placed for pausing and reflecting on the content.
Wow a lot of info. Thank you so much. I tried to grasp this in the past but didn't get it at the time. This was just what I was looking for as I took the G# from my Flamenco concepts and added it to my Key of C Major forming a Diminished Chord To fit in with D-, G7, B-7b5, And F. You have shown how to move forward in a lifetime effort. Thanks again
I was gonna say "Saw Rick Beato do this already" when I saw the title but this is incredible depth here. Very well done and wtf @ C maj penta run at 35:10, ring and pinky fingers only? #$@%!
Thank you for this. You've obviously read Alan Kingstone's book on Barry Harris' harmonic theory for guitar, and while a good book it is hard to understand and not available for purchase much anywhere. Very good production value and distillation of the concepts in the book. For anyone wanting a further and deeper study of this I'd look around for "The Barry Harris Harmonic Method for Guitar" I know there are copies around and a pdf floating around somewhere on the internet. Cheers!
Robbie- while your tech knowledge of harmony and chords is absolutely astoundingly brilliant- please, please make some videos of full guitar arrangements of classic standards(solo voicing) Thank You.
I thought I've seen all the guitar channels out there that teached theory in an actual comprehensible way, but turns out I was missing out the best of them! Dude, the diagrams and the transitions are so smooth and clear, also your way of talking about it... Even pentagrams side by side with tablature! Thank you very much for your taking the effort to make these videos. Also, may I ask which program do you use to make the pentagrams transparent like that?
Bravo! A brilliant (and incredibly thorough) introduction to Barry Harris' 6th Diminished scales. Fantastic delivery, with simple and easy-to-understand language. Fantastic job!
What a brilliant tribute to the Mastro, Barry Harris! I'm a self-taught jazz accordionist from Cape Town and had benefited immensely from Barry's videos. Your succinct teaching makes it so much clearer to understand his condensed presentation. I hope Barry sees your work. Thanks a mil; bless you. I've just subscribed and liked your video.

👌Absolutely love this video Robbie! 🤔I think it's one of the best jazz scale description/example videos on the Internet. 👉Fabulous!👈
Thank you, you really helped me.
Thanks a lot! Glad it helped
this was a instant subscribe for me, the amount of effort and clarity you went through with this video is astonishing. I now have several years worth of material to study with! thank you
I have already watched the video for 5 times and still coming back! Thank you man!
You’re helping musicians reach another level with this kind of content and information man .. thank you greatly
I keep coming back to figure out something I didn't get last time. I'll be getting bits and pieces and learning from this for a long time. Thanks, A LOT, Barry!
This guy is great. He’s like a Jacob Collier for the guitar without the hyper and obnoxious personality.
Cheers!!!
Incredibly thorough video Robbie!
So much valuable info Robbie. Thanks so much ! You are extremely admired.
dude... great playing.... so nice...
Wow! My music studies for the rest of 2021 are mapped out by this video. Thanks for putting the time into this. It's so comprehensive and well explained. The music notation and tablature are perfectly placed for pausing and reflecting on the content.
Thanks for the nice comment, Happy practising!
This is blowing my mind!!!!!!!!
🤣
Ricks head exploded early on
i just got to that run…omfg. nevermind robbie’s mind numbing memory for all this stuff, his technique alone is mindblowingly depressing! lol
Came for a bit of jazz theory, stayed for the keys to music itself.
brilliantly explained, fantastic examples, thank you so much!! instantly subbed + followed!
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it!
Great rundown, Barry would be proud. Thanks.
Cheers!
..anybody lookin for that pdf can @me 😶
@@nicholasquiller1135 Same
U can view Alan Kingstone’s book as PDF at Scribed appt.
this information goes back before even fletcher henderson before 1920s
@@johnjacquard863 Nobody teaches it anymore except for those in the BH school of thought unfortunately tho
Thanks so much for your kind words and support!
Just starting on this journey, been playing piano for for about 9 years but never had lessons. Such a superlative video, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Barris Harris brought me here. Robbie Barnby guided me back.
Really deep dive into Barry's world. Amazing video as usual. Congrats
I can imagine that you have dedicated a lot of time to B.H. material - your explanation is clear and exhaustive, your playing is beautiful
Thanks Stefano, that's really nice of you to say!
I think I heard Pat Martino talk about some similar ideas, changing notes from augmented and diminished chords to make everythng else.
This is a superb video..glad you came along !!!
