    00:00 Hello Everyone and Enjoy!
The 2023 Tata Steel Challengers is taking place from 14-29 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. The 14-player single round-robin offers the winner an automatic place in the 2024 Tata Steel Masters.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. Official website: www.tatasteelchess.com

I laughed when Max threw in that little pointless starter to the windmill; who hasn't enjoyed that when you've found yourself a windmill? The only situation in the entire game in which you can control the pace or throw-in completely inconsequential moves.

The queen sac in this game, as well as the harmony of the bishop pieces standing together (although on the other side of the board) and the aesthetically-pleasing final position, reminds me of a memorable classic. Anderssen's Evergreen Game. Can see why you selected this as the first game of the Tata! Super looking forward to this event and the coverage on the Agad & Friends Channel. 💯

@Agadmator - call me old-fashioned, but to me NEITHER of these two games are queen sacrifices. To me, both are queen OFFERS, which were accepted by the opponent. In the old days (i studied chess during 80s and 90s), we were told that for a move to be called a sacrifice - it must be such a move that that _only_ legal move opponent can make - is to take a piece or pawn being sacrificed. And there's a good reasoning behind this, you see: whenever the opponent can actually decline an offer - you are not "making" a sacrifice yourself, i.e. you are not ensuring that you're losing a piece (or pawn). And therefore, all such queen / piece / pawn offers - are merely a kind of a tactic to ultimately win the game and not a sacrifice. Tactic which may or may not work - simply because the opponent may accept or decline the offer.
Obviously, it have to be a check to opponent's king for any sacrifice to be enforced, in the above sense - and not just any check, but one which makes it impossible for the opponent to make any other move but to accept the queen / piece / pawn offer made. Such situations, obviously, are very rare - and correspondedly, true sacrifices (which lead to winning the game despite matherial loss) are even much rarer.
