  • The Sky Crawlers is a very good series but it has one huge problem - IT'S FRICKING HARD TO UNDERSTAND IT!!! And given that I've read the book, played the game and watched the movie (watched it SEVERAL times), I think it's time to explain the series for all of those who want to understand and know more about it.
PS: There's also the Sky Crawlers manga but I have not read it since it is only in Japanese, therefore it is not featured in the video.

Having watched the movie and game, I can come up with TWO THEORIES about "I will kill my Father." Sorry if it's long:
ONE: Teacher Clone. While the Teacher is likely a real adult man, not a Kildren, he may be the genetic-original or template for the recent batch of Kildren such as Yuichi. Rostock Corporation perhaps wanted to create a super soldier in the likes of Teacher due to his skills in Innocent Aces. Almost like Solid Snake as a clone of Big Boss. Since the Teacher will eventually grow old and die, Rostock panicked and wanted to preserve his skills. Hence, the Teacher/Father passes on his knowledge and skills to his Kildren/Children. Not exactly sure why Yuichi wanted to kill his "Father" in this case. Maybe he wanted to surpass the Original or felt betrayed about not being the Original.
TWO: Symbol of a Never-Ending War. The reason why Kildren are trapped in an everlasting cycle of life and death is because of the corporate war between Lautern and Rostock. As implied in the restaurant philosophical talk and in the Innocent Aces' monologue by Orishina, Kildren are the resources that supplied the humanity's internal lust/instinct for war in order to achieve the illusion of peace. Kinda like how we see war in the Middle East as a hellhole and then feel good about how peaceful our country is.
Due to his godlike ability and inability to die in the movie and game, Teacher symbolized the "war that will never end" and therefore becomes the "Father" for the Kildren that continues to be born/produced because Teacher keeps prolonging the war. Remember at the end of Innocent Aces? Rostock were winning with a huge advantage with the Sanka, Cheetah/Teacher, and Kildren, but the Teacher defecting to Lautern might have evened the odds and turned the war into a stalemate.
So, maybe Yuichi thought that if he managed to kill Teacher, he can put an end to this war in favor of Rostock and free the Kildren and Kusanagi from the eternal cycle of life and death on the battlefield. But do Lautern and Rostock really want to end a war that brought them so much profits and attention (like the airbase tour and televised air battles)?
That said, I still don't buy the Sanka excuse as to why Teacher left Rostock; I think it's because of Orishina, Kusanagi, and the events in Innocent Aces. But the hidden beauty of Sky Crawlers is the mystery of the Teacher. Also, happy birthday Ace Combat Fan!

The mystery of the teacher, hes a human, while the kildren are gentic fuck ups so the teacher can be seen as the good guy, he keeps on fighting to destroy the kildren for what they did to his old wingmen, and rostock was what caused his freinds to die, so he hates rostock for what they did, and thats probably why he switched sides, as well as the fact hed lose his ability to manuever as well with the sanka, hes the ace of aces in the SC universe, and hes holding that title till he dies of old age.

@@theghostanihalater9391 also, in Innocent Aces it's implied his plane of choice is the Suiga, while in the movie it's the Skyly J2. while the J2 is not in Innocent Aces, the D model is, and the Skyly D and the Suiga are among the only planes in the game to be able to carry both the Shotgun and the Exploding Bullets as secondary payload options. The shrapnel effect of both of these weapons are ideal if you want to do more than JUST shoot down the enemy, shall we say

To be honest, I'd love the novels to be translated more often. There's one series that I really would love to have translated, namely Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Pretty much a huge space opera with heavy emphasis on characters themselves and their fates with politics, pretty much being Japanese space non-mecha version of Game of Thrones.
Holy crap, that comparison is one of the best ones given how twists are made, at least according to the anime series I've watched.

Thanks for arranging this, very helpful. But it would be such a pity if one can't see that the seeming non-movement is the exact genius of this piece of animation. That exact shot you referred to of getting on the car, she took long because his gesture struck her memory. It is very natural for people to freeze up and take a moment to come back to sense. That passing of time is quite real to the real world, Mamoru Osu made it his mission and a point to depict a real passing of time. Also, he challenged himself in creating a real sense of time passing without the guidance and structure of hyper movement which is what animators usually use to create time. Animation unlike a film filmed by a camera, doesn't internally possess time.
In many parts of the film, where nothing seems to be happening, if you really did observe, something is always going on, whether a slight shift a character's body or even at times a switch of light in their pupils. The creative team's observance of time passing and nuanced details in interactions and emotion are truly at a masterpiece level.

Just saw Sky Crawlers today , this video explains A LOT of things about the movie and adding some new information about the series as well, so thank you. I really want to like the movie because the universe and the theme is cool, but the fact that I have to watch this vid just to comprehend the story somehow gives me mixed feelings, and oh yeah, the pacing was slow as fuck.
Also, about the ending.....goddamn....differences between books and its movie adaptation happens all the time but this one REALLY change a lot. Nonetheless, both ending gave me sad feelings and made me scratch my head. Another thing, after all these revelations, the fact that Teacher is Kusanagi's "husband" surprises me the most. I was so sure it was Jinro, but I think I wasn't really wrong since she also fell in love with Jinro.

Personally, I think the movie is canon to me personally, and the reference book is garbage. Mostly because the story makes more sense if you only take it through the film and game. I had a theory after playing the game and watching the movie. Progresses as Such below.
    1. Teacher switched sides because he grew to hate the Kildren and Rostock. (For obvious reasons if you played the Wii Game.)
    2. Suito and the Teacher were lovers, this wasn't explained in the film at all, but hinted, and to me was quite obvious.
    3. Suito only survived because the Teacher refuses to finisher her off, as he does other Kildren pilots who he often in the film ruthlessly killed, not just shot down. But Suito was allowed to pilot her damaged plane home. It's possible she faced him more times in the past with similar results, and like in the video game, her former counter parts were just never "Quite" as good as the Teacher, and the Teacher would recognize her flying style and know it was her each time.
    4. Protagonist of the Film is actually a Kildren Clone of the Teacher, and why it torments Suito so, she is still in love with the Teacher. It would explain why she is naturally drawn to Protagonist and why she said they couldn't be together unless she dies, as she knows, she has memories of the Teacher still, and Kannami reminds her of him. I also believe most Kildren were originally genetically engineered clones of former pilots, maybe even some of the Teacher's old wingmen. Could help explain more why he couldn't stay in Rostock. By leaving they decided without him knowing to keep their ace by making a Kildren Clone of him.
    5. Kannami eventually realizes this puts two and two together and realizes he is the Teacher figuratively speaking. It would also explain why Kannami and the Teacher fly similar as well as if they share a signature style, and why the Teacher kills him more ruthlessly than any other Kildren.

I only watched the movie, so I'm oblivious to the wider universe.
My explanation was always that the teacher is the 'director' of this fake war all along. The war is something like a sport, purposefully not endangering civilians and also never too be won. The two companies have only one purpose: to wage war to remind the public of the importance of peace.
During the movie the main character masters the stalling maneuver and eventually thinks he can outsmart the teacher, getting revenge for their continuous cycle of death and rebirth.
However it turns out it was never fair.
As Cairn outsmarts the teacher the teachers plane suddenly maneuvers in a way that should not be possible, pivoting around the kildrens plane in a screw normal to the flight direction, utterly destroying it. For me this shows that the technology used in the war is purposefully outdated for a long time.
This makes sense compared to our timeline: high powered turbo airplanes were only in service for one or two decades. The Nazis already had jet plane prototypes only years after the development of turbo propellor planes.
So for sure technology has moved on, maybe further than we believe in the movie.
So the teacher, though outsmarted wins easily and kills cairne who is replaced by himself again.
So the commander and pilot are forced to stay in hell, being killed and reborn forever.

@@teahousereloaded Actually the teacher did a flat half spin or what is also known as an uncoordinated turn. It's only been possible in a few aircraft in history including the Fokker Dr1. Read up in Werner Voss' last dog fight, number 4 squadron's pilots were astounded by what Voss could do in his Dr1. Though never to the extreme degree in the film. But it is fiction so some BS air maneuvers should be expected.

    • @mugthemagpie3001
      @mugthemagpie3001 2 роки тому +3

@@Alte.Kameraden I knew that half-spin seemed very familiar but I couldn't really place it anywhere in the history, given not a lot of aircraft would posses extreme maneuverability aside of obviously modern Sukhoi 37.

    Late Happy birthday buddy !
The Teacher has been shot down in a 1VS1 dogfight ? What ?!
I think the movie is better, the ending fits more with the philosophycal research of Kusanagi. Anyway, in the movie (or at least in the Italian Dub) when Mitsuya talks to Kannami in the bedroom, is said that the kildren are a biological product also made from the Teacher's cells, this virtually makes all the kildren and their clones his sons. And actually according to the game, Cheetah and Mosume comes to the Rostock's base in the same period, same for Orishina and the others, which are supposed to be the first group of kildren (Not sure about this, the adult members of the squadron were already informed of Kildren's existence), maybe that's not a coincidence. That would also mean that the Teacher himself could be not a 100% human being, why a medic should take the cells of a normal person ? Maybe in some non properly scientific way, he already was a dangerous fighter pilot before the beginning of Innocent Aces (In the first cutscene if I'm not wrong the first capitan notice a Suiga doing some maneuvers into the sky from the bar's window) and the members of the project that lead to Kildren decided to put his genes into them to make strong fighter pilots as well. The result is something similiar to Big Boss's experience with "Les Enfants Terribles" if we think in this way. But with more than 3 clones.

I theory I have is that the teacher is just mentioned as "father" because Rostock used his data or genes to make Kildren, more specifically the "Jinroh line". When I first watched the movie, I thought the Teacher was what the Kildren were based of, but he could overcome them due experience and knowing what they are capable of, since they can't really learn much over years of combat, they are always stuck in a single development phase.

I liked the plot of the movie and the game looks interesting two from what I've seen but what I really like about the sky crawlers is the sick fast paced propeller air combat, you just don't see it like that in media, often they make propeller planes seem slow and quiet but in the skycrawlers they were loud, fast and highly maneuverable, the combat was frantic it was sick.

It's safe to say that this takes place not long after WWII because all of the aircraft are based on aircraft that were either built or prototyped during or following the war. The Sanka is based on the J7W1 Shinden, while the Skyly takes inspiration from the MiG-3. The Sugia is based on a cross of FW-190 and F4U Corsair, the Tulip very strongly resembles a P-51 Mustang, the Senru has features of the Bolton Paul P99 and Junkers Ju 188, the Rostock Heavy Bombers are based on the YB-35 flying wing, Fortunes look like a piston version of the Gloster Meteor, and the Rainbow has the qualities of the DeHavilland Mosquito Tupolev Tu-2 and Supermarine Spitfire. Not only that, they are all piston engined aircraft using machine guns as the primary weapon, not a single jet or missile to be seen. Even the ground defenses are AA guns and AAA, no SAMs. Their RADAR systems are all ground based, not present in the individual fighters. These technologies were all invented and perfected decades after the war ended. It seems that in the Sky Crawlers universe, the Jet Age never took place, the sound barrier was never broken, and the missile never saw invention. They just stayed with the technology that had been tried and proven in WWII and that was easy and cheap enough to mass produce.

My guess would be Rostock had enough samples of The Teacher's DNA (hair, bodily fluids, etc.) laying around to clone him. Which gives me a theory on why he REALLY left Rostock for Lautern. Since in Innocent Aces, he obviously didn't mind flying the Sanka around (since that's what the player could choose if they so wish), so I believe that he left for more personal reasons.
I believe he left because he was tired of seeing his friends (kildren) continuously killed and recloned as shells of their former selves. To make it even worse for him, all his adult comrades were shot down too and they were likely turned into kildren as well. Making him one of the, if not THE last adult in the sky.
Another reason he could've left is because he got Kusanagi pregnant and was disgusted with himself for falling in love with a kildren, or he didn't want to hold the responsibility of raising a child. So he left Rostock for Lautern, hoping to put his past behind him.
Or, Rostock introduced his kildren (Jinroh) to him and he was disturbed that the company would clone him without his consent, and that they already have his "backup" ready for whenever he dies. Maybe he joined Lautern to find a way to stop the companies from cloning soldiers and to sabatage, undermine, and destroy the military industrial/genetic complex.
I like to think It's all these put together, because it explains why The Teacher fights so viciously against his enemies, especially kildren, is because of his past involving them.
I do have a question though, why do all the characters and locations have Japanese names if they're in Europe? And why do they read Japanese news paper? Hopefully there's an answer other than "it's an anime from Japan".
If you enjoyed Sky Crawlers, maybe you should check out Crimson Skies. It's a diesal punk arcade flight sim too, with great amounts of lore and story to back it up. I'd love if you could videos about that series too if you ever get the chance.
BTW Happy Birthday! and congratulations on 20k.

      > *"I do have a question though, why do all the characters and locations have Japanese names if they're in Europe? And why do they read Japanese news paper?"*
It's probably a form of control implemented by Rostock. If your primary language isn't the same as the natives of the region you're in, I imagine you'd feel a little disconnect. (Yes, I am aware they know how to speak english, that's not the point.) That and as you asked about the newspapers, which are in their native language and probably heavily filtered and flush with propaganda by Rostock. They achieve much the same effect as the language difference. It's a way of ensuring the Kildren focus on Rostock and Lautern's never ending war of Greed and do their job.

@@JaySeraphon No, it's just mainly in order to be sold in Japan, because there's not much propaganda in TSC universe, as we can sometimes see journalists reporting pacifist demonstrations. Remember that the author wasn't even sure to be able to sell its books/manga at first, and have been barely able to sell it around the world... @@AceCombatFan ,
I personally think that the game should be thrown out as non-canon. From the standpoint as The Teacher being a kildren who _chose_ to grow up, the movie makes sense. Here's why:
      1. You yourself pointed out that the book series reveals that the memories implanted into the kildren are fictional. So, they weren't clones of real people but are completely fabricated from scratch by Rostock.
      2. Kannami in the movie corrects Mizuki and tells her that it's not that the kildren _can't_ grow up but that they _choose_ not to do so. And, we see this again when Kannami tells the guy at the radar base that the kildren don't have a reason to grow up when they could die any day.
      3. Even in a fictional universe, it doesn't make sense that Rostock owns The Teacher's DNA and memories if they didn't create him, because the European Confederation appears to be a liberal Democracy with strong individual rights. Kildren are not slaves , but the DNA and memories used to create them belongs to Rostock.
It makes more logical sense that The Teacher was Rostock's top creation, but The Teacher refused to stay with Rostock and agreed to work for Lautern under the condition that they allow him to grow up. Although, an aging Teacher lost his immortality, he can at least learn new tricks that not even Rostock could create through false memories.
However, all the Teacher accomplished was that he revealed that Rostock has a flaw in their development process. And, later iterations of The Teacher are designed to have the will to never want to grow up. In the end, Rostock won. *This also makes the whole fathering Kusanagi's daughter less creepy because it means that she had sex with another kildren and not a grown man.*
This also means that the The Teacher line of kildren are the only ones in the movie who try to end the cycle in different ways but fail every time:
      1. The Teacher leaves Rostock to work for Lautern and grows up but all that Rostock does is make sure that later iterations lack the will to grow up.
      2. Jin-Roh has Kusanagi kill him, but all that is accomplished is that Rostock extracts memories from his corpse and implants them into Kannami.
      3. Kannami tries to end the cycle by killing The Teacher who's also the first in his line, but fails and is killed instead.
*That's why Kannami leaves it to Kusanagi to save the kildren.*
The kildren are supposed to be metaphor for people who refuse to grow up. But, even though The Teacher is getting older and fathered Mizuki (whom he abandoned), *he isn't really a man* . It's up to Kusanagi to take responsibility for her actions and admit to Mizuki that she's her daughter and that her parents are kildren. But, we never get a sequel, so it seems that Kusanagi is just putting off the inevitable that Mizuki will find out that Kusanagi isn't her sister and that her mother is an ageless synthetic human, and what does that make her?

I got into The Sky Crawlers when I was a kid, because I had a Wii and my dad gives me the weirdest fucking gifts sometimes. He gave me the Wii game and I had a lot of fun with it, despite not quite understanding the story. I remember I looked up "The Sky Crawlers" and what do you know? I come across the movie. I thought it was gonna be super fun and cool but instead I was introduced to the idea of suicide and addiction as a means of escape. I was like 8 lmao.
I plan on getting my hands on the books as well sometime, so it's super nice seeing how there's others equally interested in the franchise. Thanks for the timeline!

@Ace Combat Fan I have a theory to the hidden meaning behind the teachers skills, hes a human adult, the only one we ever see survive the games, and is the only pilot thats not a kildren, and any kildren he faces (Cept the one he pulled the cobra on) He shoots down, and brutally kills them. Hes the only human ace, while all are kildren, a metaphor that creators, beat creations, as he was probably the model for them, but, they can never gaim his experinces, as hes fought kildren before, so its notjing new to him.

Good video, I watched the movie and got involved in some things.
Now Kusanagi didn't have a daughter, did he?
About ¨The Teacher¨ ... Wouldn't it be the case of being the cell donor of some of the clones? So the idea of "father"?
Well that's it ... And thanks again for the video ^^

1:22 this map is definitely strange
    1. Polish border set after 45', which indicates that the events are after WWII. (not to mention why there is no border between Poland and Germany, or between France and Italy)
    2. Czech Republic and Slovakia are separate, which happened in 93'
    3. Belarus and Ukraine were established as countries in 91'
They probably took a random map of the current Europe and it ended there.

I know i am late, but i didn't understand the part of kildren memories and i have a theory though far-fetched
Teacher and kusanagi have a daughter(that little girl)and then rostock were scared of teacher and wanted a fighter almost as good as him and then at some point before got a dna copy of teacher and then made junro and then when junro died came yuichi...so basically what i m saying is junro's and yuichi's dna came from teacher and maybe kusanagi knew this and that's why she liked junro...hence junro must have known this as well before he died and then yuichi on regaining his memories as junro, decides to fight teacher(his father, since he might have his DNA)but ultimately gets KIA....vut overall the atory was lit and i only saw the movie but due to your timeline ,i understood a lot.......thnks a lot gor the video

    1) My interpretation was that, because the Kildren are all clones, there must be an *original* person their DNA was derived from. Yuichi says he will kill his 'father' for the same reason that Suito loves him, and loved Jinro before that - because she loved and had a child with the Teacher, and Jinro/Yuichi is a clone of the Teacher. It makes sense really, as we are never shown what the Teacher looks like in the movie probably because he would look like an older Yuichi.
    2) Another potential theory is that the Teacher is the original DNA donor for *all* the Kildren, and therefore the 'father' of all of the Kildren, because Rostock wanted to derive all of their clones from the best pilot. However, I don't think this makes sense because there is a huge diversity within the clones appearances, personalities, genders etc.
You could argue that maybe they were using a type of cloning where the Kildren are just like children of the Teacher rather than exact copies of him, so there would be variation in appearance/personality/gender as there is between siblings with the same parents - e.g. your brother/sister is not an exact copy of you (unless they're an identical twin). However, I still don't think this makes as much sense, because the Kildren who die are replaced by exact copies of themselves, which means they must be using a type of cloning which produces exact copies.
You could still argue that the original Kildren, i.e. the first clones ever made, were all derived from the Teacher's DNA (and were more like his children in terms of genetic variation) - but then each of these original Kildren was replaced with an identical copy clone whenever they died. This explanation makes some sense but is more convoluted than #1, and doesn't really emphasize a personal connection between Yuichi, the Teacher and Suito other than Suito loving Jinro/Yuichi. If the Teacher is the father of Suito's child in this interpretation then that would be incest, so I think I prefer interpretation #1.

if teacher cares about orishina and his teammates then he cares about kusanagi because of his born daughter and the similarities between orishina and kusanagi so I think in the movie he didn't kill her due to kusanagi's past self and teachers experience with orishina

About the endings. The book ending makes more sense story wise. The suicide pact completed. The anime ending leaves an open end which gives us the ability to contemplate the future of the characters. This also leaves the movie open to another film or anime series in theory. I would like to see some kind of sequel, so I'll vote for the anime ending.
