About the three construction workers: they are actually the german Bundeskanzler and two of the highest german ministers (finance and economy). And Annalena is the german foreign affairs minister.

For all non-German speakers I wanna mention just in case that Hogwarts is and Gryffindor etc. are spelled one by one the same in German, but the sub-reddit kinda loves it to translate everything literally, which makes it hilarious
Nur um zu klugscheißern: The 'dor' in Gryffindor most likely is not from door, but from the italian/french d'Or (made from gold) like in pomodoro (tomato) lit. golden apple or apple made from gold. So "Greifengold" might be the more accurate translation, but definitely less funny than "Greifentür".
And Harry Potter is Harald Töpfer.

The "Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung (AU)", better known as "yellow paper" is a document from your doctor that states that you went there and that you are on sick leave until a certain date. Normally you have to provide the yellow paper to your employer. But starting 2023 the whole process will be digitalised so the employer has to make sure he has the digital infrastructure to receive it.
And, given that we in Germany still kinda suck with everything digital, it will go horribly wrong and Most employers will go "We didn't know" eveb tho this has been known for months

"Dit passt schon" translates to "It'll be alright" - It should actually be "Das passt schon" the "Dit" is a reference to the German dialect spoken in and around Berlin where the Aquarium was located.

And the "sky over Berlin" part is referencing a movie "Der Himmel über Berlin" (1987). The Picture is a still from that movie.
There is a movie called Wings of Desire. The Germany name is "Der Himmel über Berlin" that translates to the "sky above Berlin". This picture seems to be from the movie and this might be what an exotic fish saw when he was washed from the warm aquarium on to the icy cold street.

Grad doesn't mean degree in this case but rather "just" which is actually "gerade" but coloquially gets shortened to "grad"/"grade"

The Annalena meme is not about some construction workers. The construction workers on this pic are the german economy minister, chancellor and finance minister (from left to right). Annalena Baerbock is the german foreign minister.
This is a political satire meme.
they just look like kids, asking the parents of annalena, if shes allowed to come out to play.
And it is important to mention that Annalena belongs to the "Greens" and she trys to work against global warming 😉

About the "Comma" and "Full stop" meme: this refers to a common habit amongst parts of the younger generation to insert the filler words "Digga" and "Alder" into any sentence a lot (often many times even in the same sentence). Maybe a bit like adding "like" to sentences in English, except these words refer to your conversational counterpart. "Alder" (properly: "Alter") just means "old (one)" and is used like "dude" or "mate". "Digga" roots in the late 80ies/early 90ies Hamburg hip hop community (which was witty and didn´t use violent or misogynistic vocabulary) and kinda merges the word "Dicker" (=fat (one), which also just means dude or mate) and an english word that despite being a racial slur against black people is used by parts of the english-speaking rap community. Thus the word "Digga" was a way to signal "hip hop" without using an inappropriate word. Today, it is part of the youth language all over Germany and is excessivly used in conversation - a fact that said teacher utilized to teach the students where to put commas and full stops :-)

The joke about the millenial workers contract is actually that everything sucks. I know that some of these would be good in america, but here the 20 days of vacation for example are the absolute legal minimum and 45 hour workweek is very very many hours
Actualy in this Case 20 days If vacation wouldnt Not be allowed as 45 hours a week are more then five days a week wich means the Minimum days of vacation would be 24
and the payment is the bare minimum that is legal. This contract sucks on all terms here in germany.
Didn't know and wouldn't have thought that only 20 days are possible in Germany. I was kind of sure the minimum was higher. It's 20 days here in Switzerland.

I have repeatedly seen Swiss people state that they wouldn't take a job where they only get 20 days paid holidays, and I am glad such people exist. I can't allow myself such demands, and such people apply the pressure to make it more likely for me to be able to refuse such "minimum paid holidays" in the future.
For the eagle thing, in Germany we often use the word 'geil' if something is nice/ awsome. Not related to the word 'horny', in that context. But it does mean that 😂😂
and 'passt schon' is more like a 'nah, it's gonna be alright../ will do'

I just meant that it does sound *related* to "geil" in the sexual context to me, not that it rly means that, but in German I could also imagine ppl saying "Der macht mich einfach an", which is sorta similar meaningwise imo
@@ymiros0953I'm also German and always thought, it had it's origin in the sexual meaning but youth culture used it as "good or awesome". It is sometimes used as the opposite of "schwul" ("gay") which was used as a synonym for "lame" "Bad" or "uncool". (And thankfully starts to die out, because it's incredibly homophobic). I Always thought they were ment as opposites: "geil" (beeing able to sexually please women) is the good one and "schwul" (Not beeing able to do it) is the opposite. Any way, geil as "awesome" Just staied and is a normal word in casual talk now.
Sooo today I learned that 20 days of vacation is a lot in the USA... oof. 30 is the normal amount in Germany, it's supposed to be a turn-off here. Loving these reactions though!
The whole contract is crap. 12€ (€ = Euro) is minimum wage. 45 h/week indicates a six day week, so, by law, you must get 24 days of vacation

Normally I would get 30 days vacation. But in my current job, I got 5 days extra because of my disability. So 35 days vacation.
i actually get, thanks to my trade union contract, 38 days payed off. but since we work a lot, i will increase that by another 14 days, at least.
The engineer-meme is literally "Trust me, I am an engineer" just in german
but in addition, there is the berliner slang, while berliner engineers dont have good reputation. because, of the new berline airport, which was a desaster, like this fish tank.

The thing with the fish works on two levels. The text translates as "1500 exotic fish when they see the sky above Berlin". The picture is from the film "Der Himmel über Berlin" (literally "the sky above berlin", but the official English title was "Wings of Desire").
I think "as" would also work very well here instead of "when" but definitely not "like" like the translation app said :) But cool fact with the movie. I didn't know that.
@eedoo2 die wahre Bedeutung des Memes basiert auf den Vorfall vor zwei Wochen als das Riesenaquarium in dem Berliner Hotel geplatzt ist und dabei 1500 Fische gestorben sind und sie so den Berliner Himmel "gesehen haben". Das Meme hat rein gar nix mit dem Film "Der Himmel über Berlin" zu tun. Es ist eigentlich nur Zufall, dass das Bild ausgerechnet aus diesem Film stammt (vlt ist es ja auch Absicht, wer weiß), aber damit wollte die Person nur an den Vorfall in dem Berliner Hotel anspielen.
Nope it's not I guess. A few weeks ago there was an incident, where a bloody huge aquarium in a hotel lobby just bursted (it might have been the biggest one in the world but I'm not exactly sure 'bout that) and an incredible huge amount of water and exotic fish where spilled (?) through the lobby onto the street and most of them fishes died. So I assume, it's about that case. By the way the company which fabricated the tank was from America, if I've got that right
No joke about the Sprinter, we were driving through Germany (we're not German) and my dad was like "let's see how fast our car can really go. So we're cruising at around 200 km/h and this Sprinter just zooms past us. Don't know what kind of engines they put in these but it's kinda scary seeing something that big going that fast.

About the 'Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung'... It's the certificate of disability you are given at the doctors in Germany. On the first of January 2023 the whole system changes. Normally this certificate is printed at the docs office and you have to give/send that piece of paper (yellow note) to your employer. After 1st of Jan there will mo longer be such a printed version. The doc directly sends the certificate electronically to the health insurance and the employer can call up the information directly by using the HR administration program.
After decades we (probably) will make another small step towards digitalisation. 😜

It's also joking about how the employers will be totally be 'shocked' when this 'suddenly' starts next year., despite it being well known that this change would come. A while ago we did the same for the message for the health insurance (before that, you had to send your message there by yourself, too), and despite the dates being all well known, a lot of doctors weren't really prepared for it when it finally started.
Turst me, I developed this software for this for one of Germany's health insurance companies. 😉

@@RavenMethil In der Stadt ist das ja auch alles umzusetzen. Hier am Land arbeiten wir immer noch mit Schreibmaschinen teilweise, das setzt sich hier in den nächsten 10-15 Jahren nicht durch, sag ich dir.

The problem is that the person made a typo. gerade = just/ now; Grad = degree... as many people say "grad" instead of "gerade" nowadays, we can see a process of changing language :D

The weird looking "ß" is pronounced "s" and the vovel in front of it becomes stressed and longer.
"ss" is also pronounced "s" but the vovel in front of it becomes unstressed and shorter.
A single "s" is a voiced "s" that would be a "z" in English. (Except when it is the last letter of a word, then it equates an English single s too.)
I'd say the German "s" comes close to the English "z". "Zoom" starts pretty much the same as "Suppe".

Basically the word „wie“ translates to both „like“ and „how“ in English and it translated it wrongly, it basically means like: „1.5k exotic fish and how they see the sky above Berlin“
Could also mean "as" or "when". "Erblicken" also implies that they didn't see it before
So I'd translate it like "1500 exotic fish when they can suddenly see the sky above berlin"
I think it's more like "...as they see..."
About the "Heute Home-Office" Meme: The word "Grad" is a short for "Gerade" and means "just" in this case. So it says "Just deciced to do home office today."
German "home office" is a false friend too, would be translated as "working from home". So the video said "Working from home today - Just decided"
@@kuebbisch BTW, "home office" is backfeeding into English, but the meaning hasn't stabilised yet. In any case, it's an interesting word to watch.
@@HenryLoenwind Ok it may have been some years ago when I was working in/with an US branch of a german company. When some told me he was in the "home office" for the next day, that meant he was at the headquarters 2h drive away the next day, mostly to meet with C-Level execs. So I think home office = main headquarters in the US and ministry of interior affairs in the UK. Maybe I work my job for too long 😏
@@HenryLoenwind In the UK people talk about working from home or working remotely. You can have a room in your home that is an office, so you could say “I’ll be in my (home) office.” But you wouldn’t say “I’ll do home office today.”

As a german I just cant stop laughing because he Sounds like He's having a stroke when he tries to pronounce german words 😂 but he is doing very well and his german is getting better and better 👍

10:20 The interesting thing about the blocked escalator is not only that it's switched off in order to save energy, but also that the switched-off escalator is additionally blocked ... apparently the shop owners don't trust their customers to ascend or descend a non-moving escalator without falling.
It might even be a legal necessity. The steps of an escalator are quite high and there are rules for allowed step heights.

@@Kath-Erina Why should it ? Both have their counterweights and just need to lift the load. But the escalator runs all the time.
@@reinhard8053 but the elevator only transports only two people, while the escalator transports many at the same time. There are also sensor controlled escalators that stop when noone is using them. The escalator steps are on a roll /Band, like at a cash register. So it only takes one motor to roll it continously while the elevator goes up down up down for each person individually. I can't imagine this to be more energy efficient
Geil is the tranladted meaning for horny, but is also often referred to as nice, cool etc. so if you see a geil, it can mean one of those and doesn't have to mean horny at all times
The translation app has a lot of issues with colloquial German - who would have thought?
Some people write thoese memes as they are spoken, so they drop standard German orthography and grammar.
"Ick bin …" is the Berlin dialect, it sounds almost like English speakers pronounce the "Ich". "Dit" means "Das".
That on the 12€ isn't a 'C' but the Euro currency symbol. But Eurocents can also be written with a ¢ (Bad resolution of the picture.)
"Grad" can mean Degree (as in °C), but here it is the shortened form of "gerade (eben)" which means 'just now'. (And another translation for "Gerade" is 'straight line'.)
"selbst" was translated as "selbst wenn" (even if), but here it meant "selber" = 'oneselves'.
"in zwei Wochen" = "two weeks from now" (There's a change in employment laws coming next year)
And yes, "Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung" is a real word.

You should react to Uyen Thin. She is Vietnamese making skits about life with Germans,and they are mostly in English. Also super relatable to Germans and Austrians.

Maby you should try the DeepL translator for better translations.
If something doesn't make sense this one will help a lot, because it's AI based and is therefore pretty good at keeping the meaning of a sentence, not just the words.
The meme with the "Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung" means, that the german employer has to send a request to the german health insurance for getting the notification of illness from the employees. This system changes right into the new year. So if a worker isn't there, you must contact the health insurance to ask, if he is actually ill. ;-)

Well, the meme about the gernan car brands on the Autobahn is sometimes for real true. The Mercedes Sprinter btw is meant their delivery car series which is common in Europe. Often these delivery car drivers drive speeds up to 160km/h (100mp/h) and often faster than normal cars.
Work contract:
• Work week of 40-45 hours (Monday to Friday is very common, excluding hospitals etc)
• vacation days: usually 26-30 days per year excluding holidays
• the C you mentioned was the € (Euro) sign
Personally, I can relate to the "visiting Berlin vs living in Berlin" memes. I was born and raised in Berlin and moved away for uni. I love visiting because you get to do alle the exciting stuff Berlin has to offer, but I never liked living there. It's really (!) big and it can take a long time for you to get places, it's co crowded all the time and often people are in a hurry, grumpy and impolite. It's quite noisy and rents are too high. That being said, I know a lot of people who love living in Berlin and these are just my personal feelings towards Berlin :}

Komme aus Niedersachsen. Habe noch nie so unfreundliche Kassierer erlebt wie in Berlin. Das schlimme ist, dass sie ihre Unfreundlichkeit als "Berliner Schnauze" tarnen wollen (ähnlich wie in Köln). Kommt dabei aber bei weitem nicht so sympathisch rüber.
"Kann Annalena zum spielen rauskommen" references Annalena Baerbock the German foreign minister. Construction workers or industrial workers in the snow might be some reference to the natural Gas industry.

An Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung is basicly a doctors note that says that you are unfit to work. Because of how the German employment system is set up (and you have to have health insurance in order to work e.g. doctor visits are free) it is used as proof that you can't work. You will still get your normal income - but your employer is able to get the money he pays you back from your insurance. Till now an employer had to hand in the doctors note at his insurance, but apparently this is about to change. (Wasn't too aware of it till now 😅)
Exactly, you had to hand in one version of the doctors note to your insurance company and one to your employer. But starting next year, the doctor will send it to your insurance company by themselves and you just have to tell your employer that you're sick so they can get a copy of the doctor's note from your insurance company.

"Himmel über Berlin" ist the title of a famous Wim Wenders film about angels in Berlin(we use the same word "himmel" for heaven and for sky in german). the english title was "Wings of Desire"

The one about the fish is them seeing the skies above. Which is great for most animals, but usually not for fish.
"Passt schon" can mean both "Fits" and "Okay", depending on context. In this case, the latter is more correct.
The construction workers, as others have pointed out, are the Bundeskanzler and 2 of his ministers. "Annalena" is in reference to Annalena Baerbock, the minister of foreign affairs.
As for the two eagles, they are the symbols of the Bundestag and Bundesrat, respectively. The Bundestag is the german parliament and the Bundesrat is also a legislative body that doesn't really have a good analogue. It's often compared to the Hosue of Representatives, but their exact roles vary quite a bit. Also, the word "geil", while it can be translated as horny, can also be used to mean something like sick, as in "Yo, that's sick"
The Spongebob meme is not 12c an hour, but 12€. Similar symbol, worlds of difference. Also, 20 days of vacation, while it is 20 days more than you are required to give in the US, is the bare minimum in Germany.
High school culture doesn't really exist in Germany the way it does in the US, because Germany seperates kids into one of several school types after primary school (Also middle school and high school are the same thing here) depending on their grades. It's a completely useless system that literally noone else uses, but it's how we've always done it (though the recent years have seen efforts to reform it)
The one about the escalator makes me wonder why we can't just turn it into stairs. Like, Rolltreppe literally means rolling stairs.
"Grad entschieden" translates to "Just decided", though i can see why the word Grad (which can also mean degree, as in degree Celsius) would confuse the translator.
The translator got confused again. It says "German employers in two weeks, when they 'suddenly' have to request doctor's notes themselves". And yes, the german word for doctor's note really is Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung. In german, compound words do not come with any dashes or the like.

In Germany you are entitled to 20 days of vacation if you have a 5 day work week, 30 are common

So no one who is not impaired uses the elevator because the escalator is turned off and that sign is for elderly people who would start panicking and shouting that the escalator is not working ^^
I thought that they block the escalator stairs with the sign because of being concerned of a possible liability risk if people would fall and get injured while using it "as normal stairs". Because the escalator stairs are much higher than the stairs of "standard" fixed stairs, there's probably a higher risk of accidents if careless clients just use it like standard stairs without concentrating on the difference in step sizes... who may perhaps then also try to sue the shop owner after falling on "these dangerous stairs".
Maybe an "Achtung: Gefährliche Stufen! Benutzung auf eigene Gefahr!" - sign might have been an alternative option, I don't know.

You were not that close with the pikachu face meme xD The "Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung" is a certificate you get from your doctor if you are sick and cant go to work. You used to send it to your employer by mail (not e-mail) within the first or the first three days of your sickness. In 2023 that will change and you won't have to send it in yourself but your employer has to claim it from your doctor or your health insurance.. not sure how exactly that will work, just glad I won't have to send it away myself anymore :D
the "send it to your employer by mail" has changed, at least for my employer, about one or two years ago ... when I called my boss in order to inform him that I couldn't work because of COVID-19 symptoms, he told me to just send him (per Email) a photo of the Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung after I get it.
So, I called my GP doctor and told him about my symptoms (and the positive PCR test result), and the next morning I got a letter from the doctor which contained the "yellow doctor's note". Then I just had to take a photo with my phone and email it to my boss.

It is composed of "Arbeit" "Unfähigkeit" and "Bescheinigung" and there is no strict translation in english (afaik) but it is part of the German healthcare system. If you are ill, you go to your physician (free of charge) and they can certify that you are unable to work (for a limited ammount of time) by giving you a "Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung". You used to have to give one of them to your imployer and one to your health ensurance within 3 days but they are changing a lot about that system lately. The ensurances get notified digitally now and apparently, now the employer also has to request it from the physician.
So the closest translation of that meme would be "German employers in two weeks when they suddenly have to request the cetification of unability to work themselves."

Couple of points I hope are helpful:
-The Harry Potter meme in the beginning has a double reference, one to the obviously arbitrary method of how and why house points are awarded but also the fact the Harry Potter universe sounds hilariously bland if you substitute the names with their german counterparts. Harald Töpfer, Ronald Wieselig and Hermine Bauer don't have quite the same ring as the english version.
-There are 2 groups of people who routinely&intentionally endanger other drivers on the German Autobahn: A quickly approaching BMW/Porsche/Audi/Mercedes etc. and the even faster approaching other group; the clones of Racer X employed as delivery drivers in white vans.
-"1500 exotische Fische wie sie den Himmel über Berlin erblicken" means "how 1500 exotic fish glimpse at the sky over Berlin", I believe your translation software didn't know "like" and "how" is sometimes the same word in German.
-As many people have pointed out "Ick bin Diplom Ingenieur, dit passt schon" is the local Berlin dialect which carries it's own stereotype with it and is perceived as working class and possibly uneducated (somewhere on the spectrum between a Philly/New Jersey/Alabama/Florida accent stereotype). Culturally, Berlin is very different from the rest of Germany due to it's size, infrastructure and political history. When I hear this dialect, I immediately&unconsciously associate it with post imperialist Prussian ancient infrastructure, poor governance, left wing alternative lifestyle, lack of financial means, drinking tea/beer in street cafés and cheap Döner. It's also traditionally seen as "the place where Germans go to find themselves" in their 20s and 30s (some stay forever, Berlin's party culture is truly world famous). All these influences would make me compare the stereotype of Berlin to a mixture of Portland hippies, Wash DC establishment, NYC street culture and Cali arrogance&self importance. I hope this makes some sense, Berlin is very hard to explain since there are so many weird and specific cultural influences which continually change the face of the city but it's always chaotic in comparison to the rest of Germany.
-The 3 people in high visibility jackets and hardhats are quite high ranking German officials with the chancellor amongst them, who look out of place and ridiculous wherever they go. The question they ask is "Can Annalena come out and play", who is the German foreign secretary. I guess the humour is in them looking like kids (clowns, too) sheepishly ringing the door bell and asking their friend's parents whether their friend can join them in playing outside. This is what every german child must have asked their neighbour's parents a hundred times before turning 18 lol.
-This is not the main point but the names above the eagles "Bundestag" and "Bundesrat" are comparable to US democratic institutions such as the house and the senate. The eagle has a huge historical context for Germany: The eagle was the symbol of the OG romans, which remained their symbol when the German speaking region was declared the "holy roman empire" in around 800 AD. From then on it was the symbol of the German emperor and even endured in it's symbolic role the fall of the holy Roman empire in 1800ish and the forming of Germany as a new country in the face of Napoleon's invasions. The depictions of it have been numerous and I'm sure apart from the US and Germany there are many using the eagle in a government capacity as some emblem but I have never seen one so... thicc, I guess. Incidentally, the Bundestag is a modernist revamp of the old Reichstag, the place democracy died as the nazis came to power while the Bundesrat is far less glamorous and more of a last minute approval circuit in the establishment of new laws instead of the place where they are discussed, which is the Bundestag. You could argue the symbols of the minimalist & modernist chubby eagle is exactly aligned with the public perception of the two institutions, the Bundestag is trying and failing to modernize while the Bundesrat is far less glamorous and at the same time reduced and purposeful rather than that BMW kidney vent with wings.
-The tweet about setting your comma in the right spots refers to german slang which your translation software won't pick up. "Digger" and "Alder" both mean something like "dude" or "man" in colloquial terms and can be exclaimed at the beginning, middle or end of some sentence, so this meant to substitute those words with a comma or a period and you should be good to go for 10th grade german class.

He wrote "home office, *just* decided" in German, which the software didn't pick up on.
-The last one with the surprised Pikachu face refers to the fact from 1st of January there are new laws regarding handing in doctor notes in case of feeling sick, which has been putting the demand of going to a doctor's office and bringing the slip of paper to work on the sick person.
