I did 5 years fed time for drug related charges. I got into powerlifting and at 175 could bench 305, squat 425, and deadlift 565 (with wraps haha, 535 w/out). I’ve cut down to 162 for bjj competitions, but can still deadlift 475x3. The grip strength exercises that have helped other than deadlifting are 4 sets of 10 pull ups using the gi for grips, using the gi to do rows instead of a t bar, and rep outs of reverse curls with just the bar. Jiu jitsu and judo have changed my life and kept me right since I’ve been out.
Same, coming up on my first year out and sober! *We do recover!*
@Ivan he prob started training in prison, makes perfect sense why he would mention it
@Ivan He said that bjj has kept him out of prison and how it impacted his life in a positive way
@Ivan dont be jealous

It was so hard to get above 3 plates, work a job, and then have energy for class. You guys are the real deal for sure!
That’s my issue. I work a pretty physical job where I already lift a ton of heavy stuff. I cut my jiu-jitsu down to 4 days and was lifting 3 days. My body was wrecked and made training and working straight up miserable. Now I just do a lot of stretching and body weight exercises for recovery and prevention.
@@ZervNugzHD it's tough man. Everything from diet, sleep, and managing stress. But these guys seem to have a phenomenal coach that helps alot. Makes me wanta visit Illinois in the future 😅.
Straight up man it’s not sustainable
@@jacksonjeffers1068 to get above 3 plates on deadlift? i saw nicky ryan getting 3 plates for 15 reps a year or two ago on IG. nothing is easy when you're working a hard job for sure but 3 plates is doable for pretty much every able bodied man
i would always pick training over lifting if i could only do one though
Try meth
Lovin everything about this video. Powerlifter turned bjj fanatic here, and I get so giddy when I see people able to find the perfect balance between lifting heavy and properly without sacrificing any mobility/talent on the mats.
I was a big fan of Dante already, but when I heard him say "morning paper", I found a new level of respect! RIP BTC.
🦍🦍🦍
Bro same!
What he mean “morning paper?”
@@calebvinson8703 there's a guy in the powerlifting community that died in a car crash a few months ago named black tom cruise. He always said it to hype people up before they were about to lift.
When I first saw his numbers I wasn’t impressed but you make a good point. When I was powerlifting my flexibility and cardio was a joke. If you can get those numbers and maintain cardio and flexibility it is a much larger feat.
At 52, I still lift four days a week and roll four days a week, but I don't lift heavy like I did when I was younger. I have found lighter weights and more reps is better for my body now. I love the content of this channel and thoroughly enjoy watching the journey of this team! Heath, you should be absolutely excited to the very core of your soul about what you have built and the champions you and the team are putting out!!! Keep it up...
Best I found for jits was calisthenics. Pull ups, dips, muscle ups, squats, lunges. My grips got insane.
More strength and conditioning videos please! Would love to see what diff guys do to get fit for matches outside of bjj training!
Conjugate method is the goat. More lifting videos with Dante would be awesome
This is an intelligent way to strength train. Excellent video!
I’m sure everyone lifting knows what’s up, but the guy in the daisy fresh shirt is getting some serious bend in those elbows while pulling. I’d hate to see him tear a bicep in the weight room. Awesome video!
I was uncomfortable watching him.
@@Vincerino yeah it made me a bit nervous myself lol. People would be amazed how easy it is to tear that bicep like that.
Yeah no pixleys way to exiting to tear a bicep
5 years consistent regimented conjugate training, absolutely incredible way to go
I can't even imagine the amount of laundry
This content is the best content! Working on getting back into lifting soon and this is super informative and motivating!
It's balancing being able to get to a significant level of actual strength and continue BJJ that's the biggest thing
Dedication, consistensy and trusting on your program!
1:25 Good pointer! Its all to easy to hurt oneself in the lifting room.
Train smart so you can do it consistent.
Edit: 17:10 Again with that wisdom!

Thank you for watching!
Hey guys I love to see this kind of stuff but I'd like to recommend you focus on your technique in the deadlift to avoid lower back pain and arm injuries. I know unsolicited advice is seldom well received but I promise I mean well with this.
I see the bar leave some of the inexperienced guys legs by a good 1-2" and this will make the lift harder and hurt your back more. A little friction on the legs is a good thing in the deadlift. Also, keep the arms straight don't try to row the bar to your chest or you will overload your biceps quickly and they could tear.
Wow, respect for Dante.
Thanks for watching. Dante’s an animal!
love his work ethic
Can not wait to join the family 🙏 Spring 22’ is going to be FIIIYYYAAHHH
Great work! Please share an ‘upper body’ training session!
I used to be big into lifting. Started at 15 and lifted consistently until 36 years old. Then at 36 I started BJJ and started lifting less and less because my gym time got switched for BJJ time. Now I am 43 and I probably only hit the gym 6 times in a month , days when the BJJ is closed. I feel like if I am not training BJJ then I am not getting as good at BJJ as I could if I replace it with weight training. However I have lost a shit ton of strength and I really miss being able to depend on that during matches. I think I am going to have to cut back on BJJ and start lifting more again.
it shouldn't be that hard to keep your strength at where it is, unless you were like stupid powerlifter strong. its hard to get STRONGER but your body is pretty good at keeping stuff the same with less work once you get there
@@armedjoy3045 I lost 40lbs of muscle lol....I am but a former shadow of myself.
Gym over everything
Hey, I'm the same age as you and have been lifting about the same amount of time as well. Just wanted to share that, at this age, the best strength training (developing muscle strength) system I have found to complement the hard training within the actual sports (developing the sport specific skills) to be Arthur Jones' techniques developed decades ago. My experience has been that we can get away with a lot of nonsense in our 20s that is actually no good (explosive lifts, inadequate recovery, etc) . If you're not on steroids or the top 1% of genetic freaks, I think you might find some benefits from implementing/experimenting wiyh some of the principles that Arthur Jones wrote about. It has helped my maintain strength, size, and importantly the energy needed for sports. Not draining and overtaxing my system. Find at www.arthurjonesexercise.com. and read the entries for "Nautilus Bulletin 1" and 2. If it doesn't help, disregard.

DONT STEP OVER THE BARBELL!!!!!!
It’s disrespectful to the weights and they will get revenge on you…. Trust me
Basically do Eric Bugenhagen shiet!!!
I wanna see a westside v the world style documentary on your team.
That’s what I always compare pedigo too lmfao
Thank you for watching!
Damn this was one of my secret advantages. The first day I started doing Jiu Jitsu I knew lifting weights would be my advantage because most don’t even think about it.
"most don’t even think about it."
The fuck are you talking about? Lmao. Fucking 1/4 of folks I know that train jiujitsu lift weights or actively train mobility/range with weight
@@glitchdigger lol well 1/4 of folks aligns with most dont think about it
@@justbreathe8835 LMFAO yeah he didn't really think that through
@@glitchdigger 1/4 isnt a lot lmao🤣
No matter what sport you train. You should ALWAYS lift even if youre a fuckin professional ping pong player lmao
If you want to be strong for BJJ, try strongman exercises. If you can lift a 200lbs stone or sandbag, you wont have a problem with a average human.
You should come down to Columbia and train with us at Donnie Thompson's sometime, and we can teach you guys how to Body Temper while you're there. That stuff goes a long way with keeping Jiu-Jitsu bodies happy and healthy.
Kettlebell, sandbag and strongman training is the best since your not limited to sagital planes. Farmer and wrestler strength is real
Sagittal*
i’d be more interested in seeing recovery and injury prevention, i’m not sure how you guys are able to workout hard for 4+ a day, multiple days in a row.
Peds guaranteed on something
12:16 Yeah buddy!
Best award video kendaal
Atos: just do Tren
Who needs to take the slack when you're a machine.
Thanks for watching man!
Strongest team in the world💪🏼🔥
I wish I had a team, have been alone training for 5 years
Dante's the man 💪
Yea what peds is bro on?
Thanks for the content! PSF FTW!!!!
This is epic!
Conjugate forever!
Is there anything pixley isn't a beast at? My God I didn't expect that.
Yes.. Interviews :D but I am sure he get's more comfortable with that soon and then kills it!
Just like watching Larry Wheels vids... Beast!!!
Something about couch lifting while barefoot scares me
Damn all these dudes are barefoot wtf
You either have those hard lift shoes and if you don't, you lift barefoot. :D
I am poor and not a dedicated lifter myself (as its not the only sport I do) so I have to lift barefoot. Its just so much better contact with the floor (read; balance) than having to balance on a inch of rubber above the ground. :)
Everyone just casually deadlifting 200kg
Bro I had no idea Dante was such a hondo. Hes like a shorter slightly smarter version of butt rod. No thank you
Appreciate you always watching the videos and leaving comments. Keep it up!
Can anyone explain this method of weight training. I have always followed the 3 sets with 6 - 10 rep range.
Look up conjugate method. A lot gyms don't have bands/chains, I wouldn't worry about that. Focusing on rotating the main movements and getting strong at them is the main benefit. Also the assistance work.
Every time Pixley goes to deadlift I'm hoping he doesn't blow out a bicep with those bent arms.
Thank you for watching!
That guy was right, I tore my bicep deadlifting with a bent arm. Fucking sucked bad
AYYYYYYY 👏 👏 👏 👏
Thank you for watching!
not sure what it is about this guy but don't really like him. I'm probably being a prick or something, but idk something is off bout this guy dante
You’re not sure because you don’t fucking know him personally
*420th like, yesss*
Why lift maximally even according to auto regulation? basically all high level natty lifters work in the RPE5-7 range for the majority of their work to mitigate fatigue and the data shows this doesn’t affect strength gains adversely. I ask this out of genuine curiosity because it makes more sense for people whose main sport is grappling to dedicate as much of their fatigue resources as possible to that sport. So what is the reasoning behind using conjugate as a grappler?
No expert but I always took RPE as a measurement of the effort , not necessarily the load. You could be working 1RM intensity but in the RPE 5-7 range? Maybe I am wrong .
@@Evilj82 this is wrong. Though RPE is indeed a measurement of effort, if you are at 1RM, you are simply at 1RM. There’s no way around the fact that 1RM, even if it’s 200lbs below your PR, is 100%.
Class 2x a day 5x a week how can I incorporate weight lifting
Cut back on class. Replace 3/10 classes with lifting. There’s only so much time and training to fit in a day, you have to decide what goes where.
You don't actually need a lot of time in the gym to stay strong and make small improvements. Just need to consistently do it. 2-3 times a week for 40-50 mins is all you need. Cut back a few of the BJJ sessions or dial back the intensity on a lot of them. Pick 2-3 of your 10 classes where you remove them or just do super light drilling.
the majority of that deadlifting was very counterproductive.
How so
U see ths guys…U see these guys..these r numba 1 bullsheet guys. Thy do the wee-woo wee-woo to boom and go smesh
I'm such a weak little bitch
Just do roids
Nicotine gum?
Mind muscle connection
No peds needed. Normal guys with dedication and discipline can train a 500 pound dead lift. Not easy.
I'm a big fan but man I can't stand the guy in the gym that throws his deadlift down.
Why?
Those numbers are not that impressive
Thanks for watching though!
Everyone online can deadlift 700 and yet I barely ever see anyone do 3 plates in real life and the ones that do are always 200+ lbs go figure.
finally a training video for bjj Brazilian spectate
