  • Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government is set to announce new legislation that would impose stiffer penalties on those convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
    The minister of transportation says the government is introducing tough new measures, including lifetime licence suspensions, to protect families and keep people on the road safe.
    Prabmeet Sarkaria says the lives of Ontario families are torn apart by the “careless and shameful actions of impaired drivers.”
    The proposed law would impose a lifetime licence suspension on those convicted of impaired driving causing death.
    The government would also require anyone convicted of impaired driving to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle and undergo mandatory remedial education and treatment for first and second-time alcohol and drug-related offences respectively.
    Sarkaria is expected to announce the legislation at a news conference scheduled for 10 a.m. in Toronto.
    This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 15, 2024.

    Why do they say alcohol and drugs when alcohol is itself a drug? That's like saying "people and women" and I think it's a form of denial for drinkers who don't think they are substance users.

      Alcohol and 'other' drugs?

      Yes! I'm an opioid addict and a bunch of years back I got clean and started drinking, not even realizing I was trading one method of coping with another.. so I realized I just had to abstain from everything, except weed haha.. but also realized even those who get a case of beer or a bottle of wine every night or even just a few times a week, are also inebriating themselves to cope with stress and it's a bad path no matter what economic situation they're in .. I think the rich would have a harder time realizing the addiction just because they always can afford it, it's a good excuse.. my dad's an alcoholic, as much as my mother hates it, she'd use the excuse well he worked for it! So for the rich it must be so much harder

    • @Roddy556
      @Roddy556 24 дні тому

      @izzydeadyet7336 I imagine opioid addicts do less total harm to society than alcoholics, mainly because alcoholism is much more common.
      As you mentioned, society is much more accepting of it as well. You have movies like Trainspotting versus movies like The Hangover.

      They are technically held accountable. However I don’t think its the sole reason. Majority of my coworkers get off work and slam 4 beers and smoke a joint before they get out of the parking lot. Then they drive to the bar have however many drinks and drive home. Having worked manual labour for a couple years now, like 40% of the workforce drives drunk most days of the week.

    Here’s the million dollar question, will these “laws” be applied to cops the drink and drive ? Or will they get their usual preferential treatment? They drive and use cellphones, drive and type on laptops , they speed on roads… but citizens aren’t allowed to chase and pull them over. • @ryantron9
      @ryantron9 24 дні тому

      If you’re pulled over drunk or if you’re visibly intoxicated due to the updating of a law, there already exists a reason and a precedent to search your vehicle and detain you…that’s why you’ve been pulled over…so then they test you and you fail, so they decide to take away your license because it’s evident and no longer assumption that you are drunk, therefore a danger to the majority of people…there’s nothing unlawful about it? They’re not locking you up for praying?
      Unlawful search and seizure is the abuse of rights not the dis-allowance of privileges…it’s being pulled from your car and locked in a jail for a reason that isn’t legal or has been made up…not harsher penalties for drunk drivers 😂
