- Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government is set to announce new legislation that would impose stiffer penalties on those convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The minister of transportation says the government is introducing tough new measures, including lifetime licence suspensions, to protect families and keep people on the road safe.
Prabmeet Sarkaria says the lives of Ontario families are torn apart by the “careless and shameful actions of impaired drivers.”
The proposed law would impose a lifetime licence suspension on those convicted of impaired driving causing death.
The government would also require anyone convicted of impaired driving to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle and undergo mandatory remedial education and treatment for first and second-time alcohol and drug-related offences respectively.
Sarkaria is expected to announce the legislation at a news conference scheduled for 10 a.m. in Toronto.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 15, 2024.
Good. It's about time.
Yes!!! Totally agreed with tougher penalties
I wonder if anyone from the cclu has ever lost anyone to an impaired driver?
How about some serious jail time like 25 years to life WHATS A LIFE WORTH?
What if i drink at night and the next day I have 0.1 alcohol level ? ? ?
25 years to life? 25 years is life in Canada
Lifetime driving ban is enough. 25 to life for a DUI? Really glad people like you aren’t in charge of our justice system.
One sick puppy
Let's hope you stay sober and don't get pinched from a night out, when you believe you're good to drive in the morning but still have alcohol in your system. 25 years for you too.
Losing their license means nothing. They will just drive without one like they do now.
Then they can be locked up.
Lots of drivers still drive without and insurance as well license
@@SkyGemini-od4sbNDP and Liberal jail and bail will make their life easy to commit more crimes
Why do they say alcohol and drugs when alcohol is itself a drug? That's like saying "people and women" and I think it's a form of denial for drinkers who don't think they are substance users.
Alcohol and 'other' drugs?
Yes! I'm an opioid addict and a bunch of years back I got clean and started drinking, not even realizing I was trading one method of coping with another.. so I realized I just had to abstain from everything, except weed haha.. but also realized even those who get a case of beer or a bottle of wine every night or even just a few times a week, are also inebriating themselves to cope with stress and it's a bad path no matter what economic situation they're in .. I think the rich would have a harder time realizing the addiction just because they always can afford it, it's a good excuse.. my dad's an alcoholic, as much as my mother hates it, she'd use the excuse well he worked for it! So for the rich it must be so much harder
@izzydeadyet7336 I imagine opioid addicts do less total harm to society than alcoholics, mainly because alcoholism is much more common.
As you mentioned, society is much more accepting of it as well. You have movies like Trainspotting versus movies like The Hangover.
alcohol is a substance, probably one of the worst ones, and should be treated as such
Not legalizing drugs might help too.
Alcohol and prescription drugs are also involved. Maybe a solid attempt at looking at why so many Canadians are abusing substances would be a good idea.
Lol Alcohol is still a huge rate of impairment. Perfectly legal.
Criminalized drug use never solved a problem. Go read up on the real stats and studies.
Wrong…do a bit of research and see how well it work with prohibition!
NDP has its woke left agenda to ruin society by pumping drugs into young gen
All based on an arbitrarily determined BAC... testing without cause is overreach...
Maybe charging the bars first. Also dont you think stolen cars are the issue?
Right on…how about vehicle is taken and put up for auction?
So someone on prescribed opiods is allowed to drive? Or no?
The same penalties should apply to drivers using cellphones while driving.
You must be one of those drivers who were mask while driving alone.. 😷
@@lpwork6809 A drunk driver does not know what he is doing. Someone texting while driving is deliberately putting other peoples lives at risk. Far more damage, injuries and deaths are caused by distracted drivers so they need to face the same consequences.

@@ramrod9556a drunk driver doesn’t know what they are doing? So that makes it not as bad as distracted driving? That’s crazy
Life time ban life in prison for causing death
As long as we arent dipping into 'cutting off the hands of theives' levels of punishment. Some comments sound like they want prohibition to come back. Jail time for a thimble worth you had with dinner.
Removal of licenses in a majority quite rural country. Maybe not something to rush into emotionally....
The restaurants and bars that over serve people who are already drunk should be held accountable.
They are technically held accountable. However I don’t think its the sole reason. Majority of my coworkers get off work and slam 4 beers and smoke a joint before they get out of the parking lot. Then they drive to the bar have however many drinks and drive home. Having worked manual labour for a couple years now, like 40% of the workforce drives drunk most days of the week.
0:53 let’s make the law fair and make motorcycle helmets mandatory for all Canadians on motorcycles.
They say a turban is just as safe as a helmet but I can't wrap my head around that
THEY ARE CENSORING COMMENTS!!!
it should be a lifetime ban first conviction!!!
Thats finally a good change. If you drive impaired you have NO RIGHT to drive ever again.
Here’s the million dollar question, will these “laws” be applied to cops the drink and drive ? Or will they get their usual preferential treatment? They drive and use cellphones, drive and type on laptops , they speed on roads… but citizens aren’t allowed to chase and pull them over. Your words will not be believed unless you’re lucky enough to catch it on camera.
They will drive without their license!!!!
Makes sense to increase the sentencing but to breathalyze everyone pulled over seems a bit extreme. How about we stop giving people legalized drugs, stop allowing criminals to steal cars, stop allowing criminals to get out of jail while serious charges are pending and stop the gun smuggling? Why is this government so obsessed with taking the LAW ABIDING CITIZENS rights away?
Good 👍
Yay looks good on all of them, SHAME ON YOU
Stop selling it and advertising it you are just as guilty
Are you asking for prohibition
Yep I Can See It Now Tough Penalties Well Here's The Door And Out The Door.
Authoritarians
Now lets arrest Scott Moe!!!
No they cant
Is she woke? Impaired drivers deserve stiffer penalties.
Free drugs for all is ok ?
Unlawful search and seizure
If you’re pulled over drunk or if you’re visibly intoxicated due to the updating of a law, there already exists a reason and a precedent to search your vehicle and detain you…that’s why you’ve been pulled over…so then they test you and you fail, so they decide to take away your license because it’s evident and no longer assumption that you are drunk, therefore a danger to the majority of people…there’s nothing unlawful about it? They’re not locking you up for praying?
Unlawful search and seizure is the abuse of rights not the dis-allowance of privileges…it’s being pulled from your car and locked in a jail for a reason that isn’t legal or has been made up…not harsher penalties for drunk drivers 😂
Not if it’s a law.
Another drinker using their genius logic!
@@nibsvkh it's not law no legislation no Bill's name the law another scared driver using his logic
Fantastic! What a wonderful new law? Ontario government shows it cares about it's citizens. Canadian Civil Liberties people Noa who feels the new law maybe to harsh has never had her family feel the pain of innocent people. Noa I wish no harm to your family but maybe you should think of others before praising drunk drivers.
It’s not actually going to do anything. Taking someone’s license away for life does not stop them from driving a car.
Impaired driving is a victimless crime….
Impaired crashing on the other hand….
I would elect one of those drunk driver to replace trudeau anytime !!!!!
I Believe in One and Done Laws. Five years in Prison for First Offense Drunk Driving.
Ban alcohol
Ban government
I don't drink at all but if you request a breath test from me, well I coneal carry for a reason and I use AP rounds. Be careful who you choose to harass.
Lol, yeah okay buddy.
Lets take a chance that it will work.....never mind your woke nonsense
Right wingers now support drunk drivers. Interesting. 😂

This is what you get when you have booze and dope around every corner 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Marijuana does not impair driving
@@miked.7245 the stronger strains certainly do. Maybe not such a big deal on an open road but in a dense traffic environment it may even be worse than alcohol in many cases
Not even close.
