My grandmother had this on VHS way back in the late 1990s, and I swear to God we wore the tape out. I'm nowhere near old enough to have seen him on TV the first time around, but seeing this again really gets me feeling sentimental.
Dave Allen is the comedian from my youth that I most miss. There was no one else like him. On the surface, he was all sardonic charm. Beneath the surface, there was an uncommon rage and anger against the hypocrisy of institutions (the church, the state, the military) and at the maddening aspects of day to day living. My favourite sketch is this one...the funeral race 24:49
Every Sunday night on the local PBS WTTW in Chicago early 80's, Benny Hill, Monty Python, Dave Allen at Large, Doctor Who. Those Sunday nights made me fans for life of British TV.
Dave, In the eighties, I saw you live in Melbourne at the Comedy Theatre, Do you remember...?!!! You looked at us, remarking how your hair had greyed, How you were no longer that Dave on the BBC we had all known so well in the seventies. I looked at you, Watched you smoke, Watched you drink, Your cut off finger. Drinking it all in, Reaching out to us, As if it were, For the last time. Indeed it was. Such a strange thing, A comedian. God rest you Dave Allen You made us laugh.
@@brianmilligan1787 Nor me, Brian! Hilarious 😂 They were the best though……now it’s just rubbish!! IMO lol 😆 Dave Allen was only one So many one of a kinds! RIP he was SO clever! Lol 😂 I feel older than ever now……lol lol 😂🕊🕊🕊😇😇💖💖
Im 51 and I remember Dave Allen in the early eighties, seeing this again bring back great memories and I also appreciate his insight far more now than ever, especially being Irish, he was speaking a lot about stuff that was completely taboo in his native country, Im from Irish catholic family and there was always and still always is some weird kind of guilt but it makes it more fun to prod at god!
He was an excellent actor! I've great memories of the whole family erupting in laughter at the sardine factory clip. 😅 Now that I'm living in Ireland I can vouch for his Irish sense of humour. Many here have a similar perspective on life. Can't take it too seriously!
What a difficult job it just of been choosing bits for the very best of. Everything Dave made was the best of. Well ahead of his time which was killed off by all the pc brigade who decide what we can and can't watch
I am a BBC-fan, so I remember so many of the actors from that time. Do anyone have names of other actors in the show? I am thinking of the tall, fair haired man with a broad face and a small up-turned nose (at 32:26). I have seen him SO often in funny shows. What is his name? He is probably still here. Do anyone know his name?
Michael Sharvell-Martin. No, he died in 2010. The short one is another long stalwart of British comedy series (The Benny Hill Show, Hancock's Half Hour, Rising Damp, Dad's Army, Are You Being Served?, Hi-de-Hi!), Ronnie Brody.
Love David Allen. Great. Man very. Funny The best❤
I think DA is timeless. Sadly I think too many comedians today don’t know him

This is The Best Of Dave Allen (2005)
Thank you, I just changed the title.
41:20 Indeed! ❤

Pfffff! Another one bites the dust!
I still don’t quite get the punchline of the drunks duck shooting joke at 10:24. If anyone knows can they explain it
The joke is that the guys are so drunk they completely miss the fact that the dog was able to run across the top of the water like Jesus
53:00 - 'Allo , Allo ! ' ( read very carefully , i'm gonna write this only once ! ) She wouldn't get a lot of ' resistance ' from me !
