- In March, Vladimir Putin will - in the loosest possible sense - face an election.
The result isn’t in doubt: a resounding victory, securing his iron grip over the Russian state.
Were he to serve out his new six-year-term, he would be the longest-serving ruler of Russia since the 18th century. Indeed, Putin always seeks to project this image of continuity and stability with the great Russian past, despite the turbulence of communism.
But, as we saw with Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and political rival Alexei Navalny, nothing can be taken for granted in modern Russia. A transfer of power, a loss of confidence from his inner circle or the unthinkable - assassination.

This comment is based on what data? Prigozhin publicly stated that "`Пыня` (derogatory from Putin) made a bad choice" when moving his forces on Moscow. Putin and Patrushev ran away immediately from Moscow. That day Putin almost lost power.
@@AlexKlimov-hp9re This is based on exactly what Prigozhin demanded which is " that Shoigu and Gerasimov be turned over to him". Notice that even tho he criticized Putin he never talked about deposing him.
Well, Putin made urgent statement that Prigozhin is traitor and to be stopped early in the morning. Which was pretty much ignored by his armed forced, police and citizens. When Prigozhin forces were entering the next city - people were making selfies, sharing snacks and generally cheering them on. So, Putin rule is more and more based on fear, but at the same time - Prigozhin march showed that many people don't mind at all seeing Putin gone.
Putin himself made urgent statement that morning that Prigozhin is a traitor to be stopped immediately. Putin's armed forces, police and citizens ignored that. When Prigozhin forces were entering next city - people were making selfies, bringing snacks to share and generally cheering them on. So, Putin's grip on power is based more and more on fear, not on common consensus to keep him in power.

NATO should not be afraid of pushing Russia out of the Ukraine. So long as we don’t cross into Russia there is absolutely no risk of nuclear war. It should be easy for 32 countries to team together and push out one with an economy the size of Spain’s. We cannot allow ourselves to be held to ransom like this.
