  • Averaging 361 days of sunshine each year, and a Guinness World Record for logging the most consecutive days of sunshine (768 days), St Petersburg Florida is nicknamed "The Sunshine City". Due to its good weather and low cost of living, the city has long been a popular retirement destination, although in recent years the population has moved in a much more youthful direction.
American Style magazine ranked St. Petersburg its top mid-size city in 2011, citing its "vibrant" arts scene.
St. Petersburg is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. St. Petersburg is the second-largest city in the Tampa Bay Area, after Tampa. Together with Clearwater, these cities comprise the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area, the second-largest in Florida with a population of around 2.8 million. St. Petersburg is located on a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, and is connected to mainland Florida to the north.

Do you think its reasonable to book a separate hotel/apt in St. Petersburg while staying in Tampa or just visit St. Petes and go back to Tampa hotel., Thanks!

    • @jtmichaelson
      @jtmichaelson 6 років тому +1

First of all, I love your username. Being a fan of the band Asia from back in the day, that stood out. If you don't know who they are, or too young to know the reference, check them out sometime.
But as for your question, I think it would be more reasonable to book in St. Pete down around the beach area, say like Madeira or Treasure Island. Both towns have relatively quick access to Clearwater to the north of them, Sarasota to the south and then to get back to Tampa you'd have have to go back via Central Avenue to Gandy Blvd. And it would be about 40-45 minute drive back to Tampa.
Or you could book around the historic area of St. Pete, which is up around the Bayfront area. It's closer to Tampa but further from the beaches. But if you're visiting it's probably best to book on the beaches in Treasure Island since they've built it up a bit since I left in 2007. I was raised in Treasure Island for much of my teens in the 80s so I'm a bit partial to the area.
      Good luck. Have fun.

Thanks so much, someone helped yay! :) Yes, I did name myself after that song, Im not super young, so i know my tunes :). Probably just look up some downtown area of St Petersburg, it looks like it might be reasonable as well, Im more of an explorer than a beach person, after 1-2 days at the beach it starts to bore me a little :)

I moved to Tennessee in 1998 to work in radio. When people got to talking to me they were amazed that I would leave my home in Florida for Tennessee. But I kept telling people that a couple of factors made me want to leave the sunny beaches of Florida for the mountains of Tennessee.
The weather was too hot for me, the Summer rains was annoying and the humidity. To visit is wonderful but to live there ... I've avoided going back despite my aunt constantly asking when am I coming back home. Maybe in another 10-15 years when I retire.
It's too expensive to live there. I just had a hard time keeping up with everything financially and Tennessee was like a quarter of what it cost in Pinellas County.
Yeah, I got bored with the beaches, too. My entire high school life was spent at the beaches and I began finding every reason not to go anymore. But I miss it now.
I was 13 when Asia first debuted and was a huge fan. Especially of Carl Palmer, being a drummer, and I could not get into Emerson, Lake & Palmer. So his drumming was more accessible on Asia records. I was one of the very few people in the world that actually loved their 3rd album in 1985. Especially the song and video, "Go". Great song.
I have a ton of memories there from the 1970s and 80s, from my grandparents being active in social events and local organizations since the 1940s, my father owning a record store on 4th Street in 1979, I attended school to learn broadcasting, I started my first band there, kissed a girl for the first time, performed on stage, appeared on radio, went to jail, got married, had a child all there in Pinellas County. So yes, it's an important place for me.
And I even bought all three of my Asia albums there in Pinellas ;)
Have a great time and maybe stop by John's Pass in Madeira Beach and go to DeLosa's pizza for a slice, then go walk the boardwalk right next to it and check out the live bands at Gator's across the canal, if it's still there. Great place to visit if you get the chance.

That's a typical southern town with no street vibe at all! Where are the people? It feels like you're in suburbia but I guess that's because it was designed to feel like a big suburb, not a city. I wouldn't say Americans prefer one over the other. When people are young, constantly on the move, work in the tech industry, entertainment industry, or rich, they tend to prefer living in cities.
When people want to settle down and start a family, they move to the suburbs.

It’s constant traffic, especially down Central Ave (which is the road he was going down in the beginning) and there is a SHIT load of construction everywhere, making traffic worse. Any road you turn down there something being built. St Pete used to be super cool but now it’s just being gentrified and taken up but a bunch of boujee ass people 😂. Mike Tyler well everything down here is closed due to Covid. And gentrification took all of our nice restaurants. Now we have biscuit restaurants and 20 different type of grilled cheeses that cost $10 each. It’s ridiculous. I would recommend Burrito Border but they took out all the old employees and the food doesn’t even taste authentic anymore. They took fortunatos (it was a nice New York style pizza shop) they said they’re building another one but it’s been a year and a half and nothing’s been done. (If you can’t tell, I’m pissed 🤣) $5 bucks is okay tho. It’s a lil bar where were everything isn’t $5, it’s more like $5.95, but they’ve got some pretty decent options. It’s not the most special thing ever, but me n my friends still hit up that spot every once in a while.

I put on shows at that place with my band and knew a few business owners in that area. You are trying to tell me that the homeless are gone from Williams Park? I remember when the City of St Pete put them all on a bus to Tampa as a way to clean up the city but they simply came back. What a shitty thing to do to Tampa. Here Tampa, take our trash. I worked at Value Pawn on 34th st and know someone at every pawn shop in the area. Crime is higher than ever. The pawn shops know. And according to the cops it's higher also. The PSTA hub has been removed in effort to clean up the homeless ppl from Williams Park, so it's pleasant to utilize the park as intended because it's not the way it was before. The St. Pete economy is booming and if businesses are closing that may be related to other factors such as the high rent owners are facing in the downtown areas.
