Times are going to get tough. Whether it be hurricanes, the election, earthquakes, or some drunk running into your nearby transformer, you will be without power at some time. This is the lastest offering at Costco, the Firman T07571 generator is a tri-fuel generator that has 20 amp, 30 amp, and 50 amp outlets. It can be run off of gas, natural gas, or propane.
Our only problem was that we had to play with the choke a bit to get the generator to start. Other than that, it is great and we can use it to power our travel trailer in case we have to bug out.

All...I called the company after having this same starting issue. It all comes down to how fast you open the LP valve. Per the service guy you must open the valve very slowly, allowing time for the propane to get into the generator. He states it’s a major miss in the instructions as it isn’t in the book anywhere. Try opening slowly and it will fire right up. Good luck.

i made this mistake on gas grill too. Open the valve on the propane tank SLOWLY.

I have a Champion I run exclusively on LPG. It's a pull start, but it's a very easy pull start. However, it is often hard to start just like this. Patience pays off, and yes opening gas slowly and pausing between pulls helps tremendously. I think holding the electric start like the video is bad. It'll either start immediately or never. Also I always start mine with the choke wide open (I'm at altitude which could be part of that too).

The need to open an LP tank valve slowly has nothing to do with the generator, grills, heaters or other devices. It's due to the internal fill/overflow control device in today's LPG tanks. Open it took quickly and the abruptness forces the internal valve closed. (similar to a check valve - float/ball) Like anything else regulated by government, it can be a pain in the ass. Another example would be the leak/flow-control valves on today's gas can spouts... if I were to digress. 🙄

You 100% saved my bacon today with the choke trick. After 30 minutes of messing with the starter in near blizzard conditions, to no avail, I found your video. Thank you so much! Here is a reminder about portable generator safety: everyone really needs to see this safety reminder to make sure. This advice is just to make sure that everyone is aware of all the warnings and it’s just to remind people to be careful using portable generators. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Every year, hundreds of people die or get injured when using portable generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. Make sure you are using your generator carefully and keeping others safe as well. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use your generator in your porch too. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not allow a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. Just because some manuals missed what should be listed doesn’t mean it’s safe to do. Always follow the generator safety rules when using portable generators. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Do not wear loose clothing when operating the generator. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the safety rules. ua-cam.com/video/I1jT3ANENvI/v-deo.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps. Thank you.

Getting these big gens to fire up out of the box can be a lot of trial and error. I broke mine in with gasoline but had a really tough time getting it to fire because I only put a couple of quarts of gas in the tank. Firman says you need about 2 gallons on the first start. I tilted mine downward towards the wheels on a 2x4 so gasoline would pool down where it flows out of the tank and it fired right up. Also disconnect that black battery cable when storing it to save the battery.

Looks like you figured it out... I got the Champion dual fuel and with the propane you only need to choke half way and flip it quickly to run while cranking. I've never run the gas but I'm sure it would be like any gas engine full choke for a few seconds and then run. I like your thinking I don't want to have to remember to drain gas and clean the carb and I think propane will be much better with the gas backup as a last resort.

When on LP, I find that if I leave it in RUN (choke off), it starts right away. Then again, my generator has a purge button, so that probably helped more than having the choke on and letting the engine vacuum purge the LP line.

I bought this generator and ran it about 250 hours on both gas and propane before it started surging and burned out one of my chargers. It’s dirty power and will wreck electronics. The lights would pulse bright to dim continuously. It also trips at 50amps so you’ll never get the 7500 watts.

The unit needs to bleed out the air in the propane line. When it is fully chocked there is minimal flow and air is still trapped in the propane fuel line.

      RUN-TIME (GAS) // UP TO 12 HRS (@50% LOAD)

@@L2Survive I wouldn’t assume that. I connected ours up to the furnace during the recent freeze in TX (gas furnace but needs AC for the blower and such) and only had a 5gal bbq tank that should have been pretty full as it hadn’t been used hardly at all and got 2 hours or so runtime. Granted it was outside in the freezing cold which impacted the propane pressure and the tank was still heavy afterwards but just something to keep in mind. Temperature will effect runtime on propane and the runtime isn’t the same for gas vs propane vs NG.
