    Finally! Someone that has the RWD and a SE no less! Can't tell you how sick I am of all the car review folks that get the AWD Limited trim. Now if only I could find a similar review of the EV6 on a lower trim. However looking more at the EV6 Light so a smaller battery, but think it will be a bit more efficient still would certainly imagine the bigger battery in the Ioniq 5 will go longer.

      Glad you find these helpful. I was in the exact same place a few months ago, desperately trying to find information on the rear wheel drive car, it’s part of the reason we decided to make videos. I think part of the reason is that Hyundai provides the cars for most reviewers and tends to give them the top trim. I’m not positive but I think the EV6 comes with more standard features and they haven’t sold a lot of the rear wheel drive cars yet. I too have been on the lookout for one. As I understand it EV six is more efficient for highway travel due to better aerodynamics. Both cars will eventually have the option to go with a smaller 58 kW battery pack but for right now I believe they’re only selling the 77 kW pack in the United States. If you don’t travel long distance driving the 58kw pack will be more than enough for a daily driver. When home we charge our Ioniq to 50% twice a week.

    Thanks for the range test! What does your winter range loss look like. Thanks again!

    • @UpperWestEV
      @UpperWestEV  11 місяців тому

      You’re welcome. my Winter range fluctuated between 15 to 30% depending upon how cold the car was in the morning and how cold the outside temperature was. If I kept the car garage all night long and drove 20 to 80 miles in a day winter range loss was less than when I was Traveling long distances.

    Great job, 20 min from 2% to 80%, love it. That's about 3 kw per minute. A might quicker then my 2017 Ioniq. 2023 will be my turn.

      Although I endured some slow charges during the winter I’ve been so impressed with this car is fast charging capabilities. It’s been a great car and I heard they made some improvements for 2023!

    Thank you for doing the test - very interesting. BTW, I saw an Ioniq 5 "in the wild" today - first one! Hyundai USA website shows 4 for sale within 250 miles of me (includes Seattle, Tacoma and Portland). Dealers are asking $10K premiums on the SEL and Limited; $5K on the SE. Sigh.....

      Yup, scarcity pricing at its finest. In the good old days (2017) I sent 6 or 7 dealers an email (separately) and ask for their best price on a specific spec car. I negotiated with the best two offers, and got a great deal. Of course, that was when cars were staying on dealer lots for a couple months. I hope those days return.....

    Great job on the video! I'm seeing pretty similar figures (3.5m/kWh) with my AWD Limited with the 20" wheels but at 60-65mph around 50F temps outside. I think that sounds about right since my AWD disengages the front motor above 15mph but I'm still carrying the extra 200 pounds from the front motor etc.
    And I totally agree with you, the SE is one heck of a deal. It offers so much at that price point. Looking back now if I had not found my Limited at MSRP when I did, I most likely would be driving an SE right now too. Fantastic car!

    • @UpperWestEV
      @UpperWestEV  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks glad you liked it! Great to hear that you can adjust driving and modes on the all-wheel-drive limited enough to get similar efficiency. I don’t know I’d have a hard time giving up that sweet glass roof on the limited.

      And a year later, Hyundai is discounting the Ioniq5 by $10K off MSRP. Saw a '24 Ioniq5 SEL RWD for $38K at a local dealer.

    Great video, realistic range test. Would be nice to see Hyundai include the heat pump on the RWD version (not just AWD). Not sure if this is a technical issue, maybe the pump needs the additional motor as heat source. Or money... but it did make a big difference in the cold with my Model 3 when I had it.

    • @UpperWestEV
      @UpperWestEV  2 роки тому +1

      That’s what I was hoping for was a range test that was practical and also demonstrated the capabilities of the rear wheel drive version of the car. I think you’re correct that the heat pump works best with a front motor, I assume because you can harvest heat from the front motor and all of the plumbing are short runs between Motor, heat pump, and ductwork. That said many owners who had the front wheel drive cars and heat pump said they noticed no difference to preconditioning or range.

    • @ohumeid
      @ohumeid Рік тому

      It's not a technical issue. Hyundai prioritize certain options depending on the market, climate and offered trims. My south Korean specd ioniq 5 rwd (basic trim) comes with a heat pump for example

    awesome video! the closest ev charger for me to go over to the next big city is around 250 miles but the speed limit is about 75mph with temps ranging from 70-90 degrees. I don't think I'd make it which is unfortunate because I'd love to take road trips in my SEL RWD.

    • @UpperWestEV
      @UpperWestEV  2 роки тому

      Oh wow you are so close to EV adventuring. Just have to find a 50 kW fast charger somewhere in between Home in the first Electrify America Station, even a couple hours at a coffee shop with a 240 V charger would do the trick.

    Nice Nissan LEAF in the back while you're charging... Anyways, your range seems decent, so almost 260 miles at 70mph on a full charge... not bad... That's about a little better than my Kia Niro EV 2019... but usually I drive maybe 60-65 mph.. so at 70 mph, I would guess my Niro EV range would be about 220 miles...

    Did you get the almost 260 miles of range with eco mode enabled or not? If not, would you be up for doing one more with eco mode enabled to see what the difference is, if any? Really want to compare it to Out Of Spec Reviews AWD one with Eco Mode on 70 mph range test getting 227 miles.

    • @UpperWestEV
      @UpperWestEV  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I did use eco-mode the entire range test. The regenerative braking was auto level three, but when you turn on the highway driving assistant it automatically adjusts the regenerative braking for efficiently

      At minute 2:39 you can see the full display as I’m about to leave for the range test and it shows eco mode is set along the bottom. Hope this helps!

    What’s the cost of charging at electrify America. It said $18 at 55% charge. Isn’t it equivalent to 21mpg considering $3 as gas price, that’s too expensive compared to any ICE car?

    • @UpperWestEV
      @UpperWestEV  Рік тому

      Thank you for your question. The Ioniq 5 has an EPA highway rating of 98 miles per gallon equivalent. The EPAs calculation is based on how far can go per kilowatt hour of energy consumed. That said some DC fast chargers are charging a premium (pun intended)for electricity. I’m not sure I understand your math, but according to my calculations, if the average car in the US gets 25 miles per gallon and pays a gas price of about $3.50 that equates to a cost of about $.14 for each mile driven. At $18 for 55% of battery would work out to about $.135 per mile. So there’s not much of a cost savings on long road trips at these prices but most people will charge at home for 1/4 the price for every day travel. Also, I think in the future there will be more DC fast charging options, and those groups will compete for business bringing prices down.

    • @UpperWestEV
      @UpperWestEV  Рік тому +1

      For comparison, charging at home cost me around $6 worth of electricity.

      Thanks for the comment. From what I remember when the car has cruise control turned on it sets region to Auto mode. The computer completely controls whether the car is expanding energy or capturing energy from slowing down. When the car is using energy to move forward there is no drag from regenerative braking. Here is a good video test showing the difference. ua-cam.com/video/LixPJqo07pc/v-deo.htmlsi=a3tFAWfHVoRsVSkB

    What are your settings (airco etc) during charging? Any special tricks (eg depending on outside temperature)?

    • @UpperWestEV
      @UpperWestEV  2 роки тому +1

      I always turn off the air conditioning system and usually set the car to charge to 90% for DC fast charge. But the biggest factor for fast charging is battery temperature which is dependent upon ambient temperature. I found that extreme fast charges are possible once the outside temperature is greater than 60°

      Yes, I noticed that too, that timer runs when you are filming in a parking lot, or sitting at traffic light getting on and off the freeway. So the data is a bit skewed, but when on the freeway, I was driving at 70 most the time.

    Not really 70mph, looking at the driving times.
    1st leg 61mph avg. Traffic before the hwy?
    2nd leg 61mph avg
    3rd leg 62mph avg
    4th leg car was stopped, so 58 moh is inaccurate.
    The Ioniq 5 loses a lot of efficiency from 62 mph to 70mph, un my experience (and Bjorn Nyland)

    • @UpperWestEV
      @UpperWestEV  10 місяців тому +1

      Hey, appreciate the analysis, actually majority of the time I was on the freeway I was cruising between 65 and 70 the data of the car shows is skewed because it also calculates the time you are sitting at traffic lights or driving slow city streets. My old Prius would do something similar. It would show that my average speed over many miles would be 48 when in reality I religiously set my cruise control at 63.
