I bring these guys out of my collection every few years. Vocals are great but more than that pay attention to how precise they are. I'm very surprised this band did not go further.
No lip snycing here my friends..the sync is a l ittle off on this clip is why it appears that way..In fact i will go so far as to say that we as a band insisited upon playing live ont hese TV Shows period! FYI it was louder than hell in the Mike Douglas studio too.. The sound guys were a bit freaked actually..ha ha ha....Mike dug it and that made us very pleased. Mike was a really sweet person too and was so kind to us.
What I love is this is the first thing that comes to my mind when other musicians ask me Darrell who do you think was the first band to play hair metal? My answer is always our own home grown band 707 they took rock and metal and blended it perfectly.! I’m from garden city Michigan
I RECOMMEND ANYONE WHO LIKES THIS SONG OR THIS GROUP LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE 707 MEGAFORCE ALBUM. YOU WILL BE BIG FANS-I like EVERY song on that album no kidding.
Way back when this song came out I was doing lighting for some local bands in the Detroit area. Did a gig with 707 at Harpo's. They actually offered me a job. They were a pretty tight sounding band!
I'm glad this music has been posted!! This is the music that inspired my touring soundman career that began in 1983 and is still going today! 19 world tours later! To me, 707 secretly, and perhaps accidentally inspired the entire early 80's metal-pop scene.. such as Dokken, yadda yadda yadda. I saw 707 open for REO in Boston, and left on REO's 3rd song! 707 gave REO a musical Bitch-slap, that I still remember clearly! Thank you for posting this!
Mike Douglas was an awesome show. It's so forgotten. Every week you could expect at least one hip act like this and it was usually a reflection of whatever happened to be hip in the pop charts at the moment. I wish somebody would release a mega-set of this on DVD with a lot of these musical guests.

Looking back at this...Wow! They played live; a bit choppy but that's the way it is. no lip synching or recorded playback. Miss you guys!
One of my favorite memories, Michael! Because they offered big prizes for the best costumes, we got to sit on stage and see all the wild, creative things people wore. -)

I followed Kevin and the boys, 707, WAY back in the late 70's early 80's in L.A. Saw them at The Starwood (who remembers that place?) so many times! I actually have a 707 pic someplace. Now, I listen to The Rat Pack! How we change.
Jay Boyd Penton hey bro! me and my older brother were there at the Starwood too! They were so great and influenced our music! Also on the bill was a band called Shandi! what a great memory!
I think That was around the time I saw the band, early 1981, they opened for REO speed wagon, I was like 15, it was my first exposure to live music, and I thought 707 absolutely blew REO away...I have never forgotten the experience, the stage presence and showmanship was top notch....
Always loved this song from the first time I heard it on the radio. Never had a chance to see them play but my brother saw them open for Nugent once and said they rocked.
Utterly magnificent song, flawlessly performed, and in a freezing cold TV studio with with barely any stage monitoring no less. It sounded so spot-on, that at first listen , this cynical former record-maker thought,”hmmm, TV track?” (as this would have been the norm for a daytime variety show like Mike Douglas, even at the well-equipped Television City Hollywood location where it would have taped in ‘81…) But no, Local 700 grips wouldn’t have placed that many mics up merely for show, so I’m going to applaud the brilliant performance even more so... And kudos to whomever did the live -to-air mix, as the chances that there was multitrack to use for a sweetened remix would have been pretty near zero. But that mixer’s job was likely not all that challenging; the sound we hear is a great band’s, meticulously rehearsed, well-honed, expertly blended stage sound… he probably just put up the faders and there it was. Bands of this era could PLAY, because they had to in order to compete, and what a stunning example of a wonderful, melodic rock band that delivered the goods every time, leveraging their years of slugging it out in the clubs, then theaters, then as support in arenas. Yes, it should have charted higher, and sold more units (I bought it not long after release…think I may have heard it in WNEW, WPLJ, or maybe WLIR in NYC) but none of that diminishes what this track means to those of us who connected with it initially, and the memories it evokes. The closest thing we have to an actual time-machine is a great song, and I’ll take this ride many more times now that I’ve found this (and the Midnight Special clip!) Thanks so much for posting this Jim.
You're mighty welcome. Thanks for the kind comments. Yes, back in our day, bands had to learn how to actually play, individually and as a unit. I think that's why the music still resonates.
I saw 707 at a Super Jam at the old Busch stadium. Lineup was 707, Rainbow, .38 Special, Loverboy, and REO Speedwagon. Yeah what a show. Funny thing about it..Loverboy (taped )was on American Bandstand the same day.
Totally remember this -- was a junior-high noob on guitar at the time, home "sick" from school that day (probably a stomach bug or a geometry test or something). Was watching Mike Douglas, knew they'd play this song, so had my Radio Shack tape recorder ready to go. Didn't know what the song MEANT back then LOL Took a few times getting my heart broken before it sank in. Anyway, I still listen to THIS take of it, smile, and go, "Holy sh*t..." This song was really something special.
Wait, did I just read Jim devoted himself to Ministry? Cool! Seriously, this is GREAT stuff man! Love it now just as much as I did then. Livonia's finest!
The lead singer on this song, Phil Bryant, is my father's cousin. I can't tell you how many times I've dreamed about meeting him when I was a kid...my parents had the first 707 album for free and I listened to it constantly. His vocals on "One Way Highway" are gorgeous.
I saw you guys open for REO on their Hi Infidelity Tour in August of ‘81 in Spokane & was very impressed with your musicianship! Your band came up on an 80’s rock playlist today, with this very song. A great memory.
Well... wow. As long as I've loved this tune, I've never seen a live rendition. Great job, team. The ol' B-15 behind the SVT cabs was cute. Makes ya wonder about the (apparent - hard to tell) Hiwatt/Marshall stacks too. But whatevs.

Great song by 707, done after Duke McFadden departed the band. Kevin and Phil do a great job of singing and even without knowing they didn't sing the song originally you can tell the band is actually performing LIVE! A short note that I don't believe Andy Celley who is playing keyboards with the band was actually considered an "official" member of the band.
I never knew such a video existed. Hopefully it's of a live performance. The song is strong enough it doesn't require any visuals. Save those for the tabloid pop stars.
I'm guessing it was Phil. The voice on this clip sounds pretty similar to the studio recording. Phil also does the lead vocal on "One Way Highway" on that same album. My relatives apparently had heard that song beforehand and suggested that Phil sing it because they liked the song so much.
You can tell he's not lying about the playing live. Listen to the guitar part. Listen to the vocals closely. It's not the same as the record. Some notes are held longer or shorter. Some notes have more vibrato, etc.
I bring these guys out of my collection every few years. Vocals are great but more than that pay attention to how precise they are. I'm very surprised this band did not go further.

Here’s a fun fact about the band 707. They released a second album and the lineup expanded to include future Frehley’s Comet vocalist Todd Howarth.
The guitarist looks like Nigel Tufnel, the singer/bassist looks like a community college English instructor I knew, and the lyrics reminds me of Harvey Weinstein. Mike Douglas did allowed musical bands not from his generation. Which was cool. I saw when DEVO came on a couple of times
Fucking great song watched this live and never heard from em again.. What the fuck happened?
You can tell he's not lying about the playing live. Listen to the guitar part. Listen to the vocals closely. It's not the same as the record. Some notes are held longer or shorter. Some notes have more vibrato, etc.
All live performance. No lip syncing or backing tracks here. The way it should be!
