In that moment, he began to understand how the tools of science and engineering become more powerful when combined with art, with design and beauty. I am very happy my Pantheon has given someone inspiration to create new, innovative things of beauty. The beauties and fascination with architecture did not die with me or my empire. The successive generations of man have created beauties beyond anything I could have imagined. Keep building, Keep Creating. Art and Architecture can be one and the same. They must be.

I think his proposition is vividly clear that technologies should be meaningful, that everyone has the potential to make things happen by making art and science as way of life, that idealism is never luxury when it could actually direct our motivations and transform them for our utility, so on and so forth. you're thinking too concretely. It's not about that. It's about the concept and paradigm that autonomous vehicles is just an example of.
It's the connection between the autonomous vehicle and the concept that matters. everyone already knows about autonomous vehicles.

Great talk! Inspiring and diving into a problem that should have been tackled long ago, traffic.
I want to get from point A to point B and in order to do this, i need to drive. I don't actually want to drive, but it is the only way for me to achieve that goal relatively fast. I'd prefer the trip to take the least amount of time possible, but this is no option today with so many (too many?) vehicles on the road, all controlled by different people with different driving abilities.
Technology is so far ahead these days (and makes the technology we use today seem so prehistoric) that I am confident that it will do the job for me, probably even better, thus leaving me with extra time to do what I really want to do.
The fact that money will be such a big issue on this really bothers me. This will be such an improvement to the lives of all humans and humanity itself that we can't let money obstruct us in achieving this, but that's a whole different story. Thanks Ted!
Combining the virtual world to physical world would also a tremendous leap...
Alright, this was brilliant. I mean, I see the unification of humanity rather than a global government.
This, this... THIS! is just the beginning... for us. All our ancestors and everything they have done, to push us into this moment here and now, with everything it contains. Has made a platform where we can all easily and respectfully work together to achieve the necessary miracles, to make the future better for ourselves, our children and our grand children. I'm totally down.

My suggestion is to develop hybrid air-ships; no more dependence on roads or bridges. powered by wind and solar power - as with the INTORA firebird.
I am an artist by both passion and experience I learned to draw at a very young age of 4 but later perfected it between the ages 21 and 23. Now I how to do most things I could't a lot of things I shouldn't and hit the nail on the head in life and be a very young successful man with a passion for art experience in a Herbalife Company and i call it Beyond Nutritious .

if bran can do that with the pantheon 🏛 I’m betting he would do some other wonders if he did an item on the parthenon and they way they found out about the intricate way the columns were made in the renovation
the only thing i think he got wrong is when autonomous vehicles are common place the fuel use will go up not down. each vehicle will be more efficient which will make their use more desirable - just as low power large TV screens are used as billboards thus increasing the demand for electricity.
I disagree with the pyramid statement , it's a beautiful amalgamation of art and engineering !

That's why unlike his assumption, it will require more than one driver to assess things. To begin, there will probably be "moderators" for things like that, along with the use of large data sets.

I was watching this, and trying to guess what the current day equvilant of the pantheon was. Then i realized that i was stairing at it the wole time... (my phone)
Also, i am a cab driver and the potential economic benefit of not having to pay people like me to get from A to B has to be enormous.
I totally think that Engineering is an Art, life also is an art but unfortunately Artists are rare !
those who are not creative enough have not discover yet the real sense of Art.

Not sure I agree with the whole 'experiencing reality > tech' point. Variety is nice, but I think it's a bit hypocritical to reject such a potentially broad sweep of reality as 'less important'...
He's not saying either one is less important, he's saying it's important to experience reality to better appreciate our technology.

Okay, I enjoyed Ferren's talk until he began lobbying for what amounts to (AT LEAST) tens of millions of autonomous vehicles.
How about a much leaner (i.e., less resource intensive) and more elementary transportation system instead? That is, a coherent, comprehensive, and efficient public transit network.
I find it somewhat irritating that Ferren's "vision" is to replace one capital resource-sucking monstrosity with.... another capital resource-sucking monstrosity.
I'll let others speculate about his motives.

WTF is this guy talking about? Pantheon to autonomous cars? How is this disjointed talk worthy of TED?
First, the Pantheon isn't that amazing. So what if it's the largest, concrete dome. We have stadiums that are 5 times as large that are fully retractable.
Second, the 5 "miracles?" What's miraculous about these? They were all created for a very specific useful purpose...
1 - GPS system... Created by computer scientists, engineers, and physicists
2 - Road system... Cartography? Satellite imaging? It's data loaded into GPS systems at this point, so 1 and 2 are kinda the same.
3 - Networking... Computer scientists, engineers, IT professionals...
4 - Machine vision... Computer scientists, engineers...
5 - Someone with vision? If this has been something revisited for decades, how is this anything special that we now have the technology to actually do it?
Is it a miracle that it's being repurposed and used in combination?
Third, where's the link to art in that? The person with "vision?" The repurposing of technologies?
Fourth, why autonomous cars? You want a modern "Pantheon" go look at CERN or a nuclear reactor or an aircraft carrier or the Curiosity Mars rover...
I think you missed the point of his talk. The Pantheon is impressive because it was made thousands of years ago, and required new technologies to be created before it could come to life.
The reason autonomous cars are being compared as opposed to things like the LHC or a reactor is that they require more broad reaches of technologies. You need the same things as previous versions (engines, wheels, safety equipment), but you also need never before used tech like mobile connectivity, pattern recognization and GPS to all work together.
Finally, as far as I can tell, he just uses the term "miracles" because they are unique, improbable occurrences (like a 'miracle' buzzer beater in your favorite sport), not because he's giving credit to some deity. It is TED, after all, and I trust them to recruit people who promote thinking.

Statements like this only highlight how little people know about what the LHC is, what it does, and what is required to make it work.
The networking, database, and data processing alone goes far beyond what's needed for an autonomous car.
It generates antimatter and proved the Higgs-boson, and that's only 1 of the 7 detectors, which if you've ever seen the size of those technological marvels, makes the pantheon look like a Lincoln log house built by a 3-year-old.
And that's even ignoring the fact that the LHC is one of the largest and longest running international projects.

First, how did you determine that they're improbable? We have a sample size of one to go from, and in that sample size, those things were created. That makes them 100% probable. To say they're improbable would require we find other intelligent forms of life with varying levels of technology and determine how many of them created something similar to GPS.
Second, technology is a natural progression on top of each other. You might as well claim a thumb drive is improbable because all we used to have were floppy disks.

And his point was to mix and and design, like the Pantheon, and that mixing in of art does not apply to autonomous cars or any technologies that go into it. His entire talk might as well been "I like the pantheon, and autonomous cars are cool."

I disagree with his premise: Modern technology such as integrated circuits, is here to stay. Modern art, maybe not.

I wanted to like this, but he didn't show something new that he created himself or that we didn't see before, I don't like talks that just point to other successful things and says 'isn't that successful, go do more of that'... it's the same thing motivational speakers use that point to Bill Gates or other rich celebs for you to emulate in exchange for substance in their talk

Rather then envisioning everyone riding in Automatons, conscious wheelchairs, as Bran does, how about an artsy bicycle, then he can lose some weight and guide us to fanciful engineering. Or he could donate his riches to the poor in society, and get a job in a factory doing physical labor where he will get into shape.
Agreed. Technology should reduce labor so we may put our efforts elsewhere, but it shouldn't keep us from having a healthy body.

Nice talk but don't disparage the great pyramid hahahah! It's internal engineering is more ingenious than the Pantheon could ever dream of. But seriously the creators of the Pantheon (and other roman & greek structures) most likely made it using the limited knowledge that managed to survive through the years from the earlier times

Bran Ferren is a good man, but he presents like a teacher who would make me sleepy. Too scripted, nervous, too much dialogue, I lost track of his point. Not a very enjoyable Ted talk sadly.

Unless you've got a major in communication you shouldn't be able to perfectly go up in front of 125+ people and spout out a 20 minute speech.

I have done a little work for Bran and attended a few of his meetings at Applied Minds. The tremor in his voice comes from his unbounded enthusiasm and excitement about the subject matter.
