For live gigs I am using just 1 Mic = Shure Beta 91 inside the cajon. This mic is able to capture not only the Bass sound but also the High tones very well. Soundcheck takes 5 min. and I am ready to go. Studio and recording is a different story.
Thanks Noah, yes I’ve heard that Shure mic is good too 👍 I’ve been using the D6 for over 10 years now and always works amazing for me. Also depends on the playing style of each cajon player too as to which mic is best to capture their tones. 🎶 All the best with your gigs 😎
You missed to mention the distance of the front mic (Shure ). Your demo , tutorial is simple yet direct to the point and helpful . Have ever played in a church where the natural acoustics has this echo/revers because of this architecture designs ? What mix adjustments will you advise .?
I basically do the same thing, though I use an SM58. I found the best and most consistent sound comes from dropping the mic right inside. You get all the good tones out of your Cajon. This also works great for me because I will use brushes allot, when I play and this setup picks that up better.
@@ulusot Just to update. I'll still use an sm58 on some of my Cajon's, but I've started installing "boundary" mics, just bellow the sound hole. And they work great. Though you have to keep the gain really really really low, or they'll clip.
Nice video - I would just recommend to use much shorter stands. It looks much nicer if you have a small stand facing upwards (or 90 degrees) than bending them downwards like this.
i came here to view your 'mic a cajon in the recording studio' vid and hung around for this one. glad to see Im onto a winner as i use the exact same mics live, now i just need to try using the d6 inside the cajon.
I use Sm 58 for lows and Sm57 for highs .... I prefer to place Sm 58 at 1 inch distance from the hole and Sm 57 3 to 4 inches away from the front board and soundcheck doesn't take more than 2 mins
Cheers 👍 yes I tried that for the sound hole, but as I move around a fair bit when I play, I found it easier to have it on the inside 👍 All best with your gigs 🎶
Hello. I'm from Uruguay and I have a question. I've two microphones, an audio technica AT2035 and a behringer XM8500. How I should put them around the cajon to get a good sound for? Sorry for my horrible english
Hi there - sorry I haven't used these mics on a Cajon before, so not sure how they work on this drum. However, in general at the back of the sound hole and at the front will maximise you getting the acoustic natural sounds of the cajon :)
Hi there - for me its about getting the EQ right, which varies depending on the room/space you are in - but generally, if you remove some of the Mids - it works really well. Hope you've been able to get a good sound!
Hi Rich, I tried this but I much prefer the mic sitting inside, so I know the sound will remain constant throughout the entire gig, even if I move around - and always works well this way :)

I guess ill take your word for it since you didn't demonstrate what it sounds like
Thanks Arthur 👍 I’ve been using either of these 2 mic options for 10 years now, and always work a treat 👌🎶

I was expecting a demonstration of what the sound is like with each setting. 💁
You should get an award for this video!!
Thanks heaps for watching and for the support!
Cheers :)
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.
Thanks Tommy!

Any advice for mixing a cajon with a built-in piezo pickup?
What if I'm a guitarist and I wanted to loop a cajon beat. What setup would you recommend
Would it work to use that 1st technique, but use the 2nd microphone in that position?
Hey Corey, yes that could work too - just make sure you adjust EQ levels accordingly. Sorry for the late reply!

Hi, I'm not familiar with those microphones sorry! But just try some different placements out, and then you'll find the sweet spot eventually!
Cool Byron - great vid - super clear and v useful!!!
How would I mic it if I am using a brush as a hit hat? Please help 😊
Hi Sebastian Alvarez 🎶 put another Shure Beta57 on the hi hats, that will sound great 👍 all the best!
Which cajon is better under 5k?
What PA/Amp Speaker do you plug your mics into? Thanks
My PA System is Dynacord, but I use many at different venues, and always works well!
Fantastic! Concise, to the point, and exactly what I needed to know.
Thanks Michael!
Lots of helpful info here. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Dustin!
Did you say that you need to flip the polarity of the inside mic while using a 2 mic setup?
Hey Lauren - nah no need : )
Thank you very helpful!
Thanks for watching, glad to help 😎🎶🪘
Thanks Byron!
Thanks for sharing your info!
how can we remove humming ..while insert mic in it ?? any solution??

Hey man - if you take out the mid frequencies a bit, should be fine.
what about a mic clamp that attaches to the port ?
hey man - ive tried that, but its a bit bulky, and i find that on the inside it is much easier and sounds great!

Informative video
Thanks for clarity, #CajonplayerIndia
