This is crazy! I am so mind-blown now Thank you for your tutorial (But I don’t think I can learn how to do even one of the skills which u demonstrated in the video within this year lol) Respect and love from Hong Kong
Excellent video and demonstration, sir! I feel like I've been playing it wrong. Haha. You definitely represent those Shlagwerks well. Do you know if they're going distribute more here in the US? I can't seem to find them anywhere.
@dwood721 Yes, when you lean back the tone changes a bit.. it's a more open sound. Schlagwerk actually sells a holder that leans the cajon back for you called the Schlagwerk Ergo Cajon-Adapter... check it out!
Your quite fantastic on finger dumming, I do play cajon ( duende duo) and want to improve my technique with some advanced exercise, will you be uploading more of those awesome videos ?
i use a sure sm58 and a sennheiser bass drum mic on the back... then up top i use a beyerdynamic stereo condenser. I didn't really eq this much.. just added a little bass punch.. good luck !!
Exactly as Hawrider88 said. Except 37 years drumming. :) Looking for more techniques to get more expression on the Cajon and this stuff is perfect. Thank you so much for sharing.
Hi, Vincent, I am just starting on the cajon. I have played other percussion instruments on and off throughout the years. Once I feel a little stronger on the cajon, I'll consider a skype lesson with you. Thanks for the offer.
hello, yes these are triplets at 6:00. use the bongo technique I describe at the beginning of the video. You can then impose a back beat on that. Good luck thanks for watching!
So dheere dheere doesn't just use the palm, it also uses the fingers and thumb? Because I can't seem to make a sound just by using the sides of my palm. I use my fingers so then it becomes more like the Congo technique. Are you utilizing your fingers when doing dhir dhir on cajon or purely the sides of the palm
awesome lesson! i'll be practicing these techniques right away, thanks man. i have a question about your beat that starts around the 6:00 mark. are those 32nd notes or 32nd note triplets? 'cause just to the naked eye, it seems like your right hand is only playing singles while your left hand's playing doubles, and so your right hand has the flexibility to make a beat by itself. IT SOUNDS AWESOME, how do you do it??
nice one! I agree you did not seem over happy on this, but you have mentioned below you had shit going down. Love the Dhira and conga technique, not had mine long and they will come in handy, any other Tabla strikes usable?
+tabla1 Ahhh yeah that would make sense the Tirakita. Will be approaching the box in a new way next time am on it, did not think to use the tabla licks!
Been drumming for 20 some years, but new to the cajon. Is there a reason for leaning the cajon back? I have seen people play with it sitting on flat and leaning like you.
@@justinupchurch1773 right on what type of music do you play? What are you looking to learn on cajon? i could show you some basic strokes and grooves to get you going pretty quickly.
@@tabla1 I make electronic music, & hip hop type beats. i got the cajon to record some different types of percussion to add to beats, for fill mostly, but now that i have it i really love the sound. Im recording with 3 mics running into different 1073's, panned according to location in stereo field, then compressed with different analog compressors. It sounds brilliant, but i'm not a percussionist, & I'm having trouble doing much with it other than just getting separate sounds & programming them in my DAW. I'd like to be able to play faster with it & record that natural human feel & sound over just programming each sound afterwords. I have to learn to properly bounce my hands off it first i believe..
Justin Upchurch that all sounds awesome. There are some basic motions to get you back and forth for beats on cajon. If you learn the first three basic strokes and those motions you can add a lot to hiphop and electronic music. Let me know if you want to do a zoom class to get you going we can set something up. Cheers
Ernest, Thanks man! The best place to get schlagwerk cajons is X8drums. google them and schlagwerk... they carry most of the products at a good price! Good luck and enjoy! Vincent
+iiwa king yes, this could be considered a heel toe technique. This one uses mainly the thumbs so it's a little different then the regular conga pattern.
Probably the most straightforward, non fufu video I've found on this. Thanks
+amcarter thanks for the positive feed back! Take care!
I've been playing drum set for forty years...but very new to hand drumming. Your technique is fantastic...thanks for sharing!
anytime! thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing. I had heard that a cajon could emulate a tabla and found your video to show that it is possible. Wonderful lesson!

This is GREAT!!!!! How long have you playing cajon?
+majinngiri Thanks so much =) 10 years now! do you play?
+tabla1 I've just started playing cajon since this May. It's very fun to play and I love it!! I'll practice your cool strokes:)
wonderful! glad you are liking the strokes! =)
ohhh!
AWESOME!!!!
Thanks!!
great technique......awesome
thanks so much!
really cool video, and really nicely performed!
but when i'm using this technique (1st, thumb-fingers)...my thumb is hurting a lot.
any ideas?
keep your hands loose and let the drum do the work for you. what kind of cajon do you have? It should not cause any pain if done correctly.
When you do the tabla stroke shown in this video, are you using your thumb as well or just the pad of the thumb? Thanks, bro.
Sambaji the thumb as well is used. The meaty part of the palm also. Lmk if you’d like to do a Skype lesson.. I can show you that one! All the best!

Sam-baji okay sure.. keep me in mind. Even one lesson can really help a lot for Cajon. All the best!
Thanks, bud. I'll keep that in mind.
That's cool man.
thank you!
Thanks nurtuc.. I am crazy! thanks for noticing ... good luck with your practice bro!!
Does your thumb and fingers touch during the tabla technique?
Yes, the whole hand touches.

nice! glad this opened you up to the idea!
thanks man! as are your video's..... much love!

+Gökhan Durgut Any time!!
Been drumming for 20 some years, but new to the cajon. Is there a reason for leaning the cajon back? I have seen people play with it sitting on flat and leaning like you.
When you lean back it opens up the Bass tone. Also a bit easier to reach the playing surface.
thanks sean! enjoy man... play on!!
Awesome.
Joseph Darmenia 😀👍🏽🥁🙏🏽
this has helped out alot but im having a hard time getting the dera dera down
keep the hand loose, and let it flow side to side. The outer edges of the palm should be hitting. Best of luck to you!
I just bought a Schlagwerk 2 in 1 blackface..
i can't do that with it
i suck
I’m sure you sound good! Let me know if you’re interested in online lessons to get you going. All the best

Thanks for watching!!!
thanks!
can it consider as a heel-toe technique?
+iiwa king yes, this could be considered a heel toe technique. This one uses mainly the thumbs so it's a little different then the regular conga pattern.
+iiwa king yes this is a heel toe.. just with the thumbs.. not the full palm
I think I was approaching a black hole towards the end and time did funny things
