      I'm glad you are enjoying it 😊 Potter's pink is grouped in with the earths on the W&N dot card so will be in a later video. 🙏

    My first tube from WN is Mauve. Love how it adds beautiful pops of color. So thankful for these videos because it helps tremendously to see the swatches.

    Loving this series! My staple reds and purples are winsor red, permanent alizarin crimson, permanent rose, permanent magenta, and winsor violet. I do use some others on occasion though since they’re so beautiful :)

    I started out with W&N watercolours and continue to use many of them, as they are a quality brand and some of my favourite colours come from W&N. I have branched out and added other brands to my many tubes. From this selection of swatching my colours include; Cadmium Red, Winsor Red (use often), Winsor Red Deep (use often), Permanent Rose (all time favourite), Quin Magenta (love this one!), and Ultramarine Violet. Agree with many of the others that W&N are not doing themselves any favours by being thrifty with their dot cards. Thanks Jay. It’s always interesting to hear others reactions and find new colours.

    Interesting to see the reds on my palette, Scarlet Lake, Winsor Red and Permanent Rose, compared to the other reds from W&N. Thanks for posting your swatches.

    My favourite lightfast pink is their permanent rose. The Quinacridone Magenta rivals Qor's version of Quinacridone Magenta - they are amazing and bright. I also love the Winsor Red PR 254 which I was introduced to through QOR. When I couldn't repurchase from QOR, I tried Winsor Newton's and it does not disappoint.

    I have a number of brands but started out with W&N. Compared with Schmincke I find their reds especially to be cleaner. They are refined and just work well in colour mixing. I have quite a few favourites here, especially among the cool reds. I do have a pan of rose madder just because it’s beautiful and unique to them. A closely guarded recipe. I understand the lovely scent comes in the tube version. I use it for sketchbook work and just for fun.

    Winsor & Newton really knows how to produce red hues in their watercolors. Permanent Carmine is my “if I could only have one red” shade with Quin Magenta as a close second. I’ve used a few PR122s in other brands, but I think that W&N’s version has the most clarity and mixes extremely well to create warmer reds. I recently discovered Permanent Mauve and I’m in love with it. It looks gorgeous next to the W&N Potter’s Pink and Roman Szmal’s Green Earth PG23.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor

      I finally bought Potters Pink a year ago. WN is my favorite with their light pink shade, while others are a much darker pink. Roman Szmal is similar with a light pink also. My most recent purchase was the Permanent Mauve. It is completely different from all the other Manganese Violets I've tried, but I'm really enjoying it. I was just mixing my PP with a Terra Verte and Van Goghs Turquoise green the other night.

    I find the WN paints more delicate and smooth compared to the other brands I own (DS DV MG SCHM) and there are things I really like about this brand. My fav from this swatch is the scarlet lake - that color just gets me. Thanks for all you do!

    While I don't really use it, one of my favorite reds from W&N is Rose Madder Genuine, because it smells of bergamot.
    In my palette, though, I generally stick to Scarlet Lake, Permanent Rose, and Opera Rose.

    I normally love Rose Doré. But this swatch doesn't look like what I know. Normally much darker. It is not in their best interest to put too little paint on the dotcard. 😆 Love your swatches. I have bought many new paints because of you. My wallet is not happy. 😄

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  Рік тому +3

      Oh you have a different experience with Rose Dore? By giving so little paint on their dot card it probably turns many artists off from buying certain colors.

  • @alizafar2624

    Winsor red, rose dore, alizarin crimson, permanent carmine, permanent alizarin crimson, permanent rose, rose madder genuine, opera rose, Quinacridone magenta, permanent magenta, Quinacridone violet, Winsor violet are my favourites
    Also about Permanent alizarin crimson, brown madder, Quinacridone gold, the pigment PR206 that is used in them is discontinued. Winsor and Newton have changed it to perylene maroon PR179. Also the Quinacridone gold by Winsor and Newton has its name changed to transparent gold deep.

    i'm loving the woosh of water into the PV55 ;P i somehow expected more colours in the magenta range but what they have on offer are enough for me so no complaints, but i do wonder if they'll be adding more in the future. great swatching vid as always :D

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  Рік тому

      Do you think W&N will expand their range eventually? I think the dot card said there were 109 paints in the range. Compare that with Daniel Smith's 250+ and Schmincke's 180. Maybe they'll come out with a granulating or sparkly range? 🤣

  • @deeanncross7674

    I usually love WN Rose Dore, but that sample seems quite weak, not a good representation. Also, WN Opera Rose has done quite well on some lightfast tests I've seen on You Tube. I don't have any cadmium reds, but I have several WN quinacridone reds, pinks and magentas that I love and use frequently.

  • @aeli999
    @aeli999 Рік тому +2

    I use PR254 in either WN or DV interchangeably because they are pretty much the same. I also use the WN Permanent Rose. Any of the rest I may use are other brands. That Rose Dore is apparently just a weak color. I looked on Kim's site and she has "weak" written on the card which made me laugh.

  • @martinanelsonartandpsychol6478

    I relay like all the Pyrrol Reds, but WnN doesn’t seem to have much focus on them. 😊 Thank you for the video

    Jackson’s continues to state that the pigment of Permanent Carmine is Quinacridone pyrrolidone. To my knowledge, Quinacridone pyrrolidone is not listed on the CI. Maybe now it’s its been bundled with the PV19s? Handprint mentions the pigment as Quinacridone pyrrolidone.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  Рік тому +1

      Ah ok. I just went with what it says on the Winsor Newton website.

    • @awatercolourist
      @awatercolourist Рік тому

      @@JayNathanWatercolor That’s probably the wisest thing to do. W&N might have changed the formula or, as I said, quinacridone pyrrolidone might have been given the CI name PV19.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Рік тому

    Okay, this is interesting. I only have a few W&Ns... of this group, I have Permanent Carmine and Cobalt Violet. Oh, and also Smalt (Dumont's Blue) PV15, which is quite strong for a PV15, and a unique shade. Anyway, I'm confused about the pigment listed for Permanent Carmine. My tube says it's made with Pigment Quinacradone Pyrrolidone, a pigment with no number, which is the whole reason I got it. This has been true for a long time; Bruce discusses this pigment on Handprint (it's all the way at the end of list of reds). So I looked on W&N's website just now, and I see they do list it as PV19. I'm not sure if they have changed it, or if that is a misprint on the website. I suspect it might be the latter.
    I was also looking at the swatch of the Permanent Alizarin Crimson, and thinking it was a very unusual PR206. However, from looking at Handprint just now, I see Bruce lists that both the un-numbered Quinacradone Pyrrolidone and PR 206 are in the paint. And in fact, if you look at the bottom of the page for that color, it does say it contains "Quinacridonequinone." It does also look very similar to the swatch of Permanent Carmine here on your sheet. (They also note PR 206 will soon be changed to PR 177, which is pretty ironic considering how fugitive it is!)
    It's nice to see the genuine rose madder, although I have heard maybe that's not so genuine either, anymore.
    The Cobalt Violet is quite good even straight out of the tube (for a cobalt violet anyway). It looks pretty weak here, but I think that's par for the course on a dotcard, because of the low tinting strength. I've also wanted to try their PV 16, and Ultramarine Violet PV15, which I assume will paint better from a tube than from a dotcard.
    There are 2 versions of PV 55, the redder and the bluer. I have both from Rembrandt. I feel they sort of divide warm to cool purple perfectly. Most call it Quin Purple, but they do that confusing thing of calling Quin Violet "Permanent Magenta" and Quin Purple "Quin Violet." Makes it so confusing when you are switching between brands!

    Hi Jay, thank you for the swatching review. I’ve always avoided Cadmiums, so am fascinated why you really like them… can you throw any light on it for me?

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  Рік тому

      There's just something I love about cadmiums when painting with them. I usually have them as accent colors when I need the bright, intense shot of color. Especially the cadmium red. I use the yellow for mixing sometimes but very rarely do I mix with cad red. I also love how they can be bright and opaque but thin out beautifully when diluted. I understand why some people avoid them but I just love having a cad red and yellow in my palette.
