Diesel Forced DPF Regeneration

  • This Diesel Forester came to us from interstate with a DPF that was so badly blocked that the car wouldn't even idle.
    Turns out another workshop flashed an overseas tune that completely deactivated the DPF regenration function, as well as caused a range of other issues. Using the software tools available to us, we flashed the ECU back to standard, but the car still wouldn't go in to regeneration mode due to the amount of soot present.
    At this point, most workshops (including dealerships) would have no other option but to replace the DPF at a large cost to the customer, however using RaceRom Tuning Tools, we were able to force the ECU in to regeneration mode (as seen in the video), which we are hoping will save the customer the large cost of a repalcement.
    The next step will be to give the engine a full chemical soot clean, then re-evaluate to ensure proper operation.

    Never trust a mechanic that is performing a DPF regen indoors.

      That poor blue car that’s behind it as well. I’d bet he doesn’t even have the air conditioning on full blast either which is what you’re meant to do as well and he probably has the room full of flammable objects as well.

    Nice video. I monitor my DPF regenerations with Torque Android software. After regenerations soot % used to be at 0% but since a month or so it only goes down to 30% and now regenerations happen after only 30-50km. No DPF lights yet. I suspect my DPF is partially blocked. Should I ask my dealer to run a forced DPF regeneration? Thanks.

    After a clean or regen with a non genuine scan tool will the car require a computer update from manufacturer, if the DPF or computer doesn’t recognise that it has been cleaned? I am aware of cars going back to limp mode even after a clean or regen but the car thinks it still needs a clean. The DPF light comes on and limp mode again. One example was when the initial issue was a split intercooler hose. DPF was fine before that. Hose replaced, DPF cleaned. 2 weeks later DPF light on and limp mode. Forced regen with negative results. Done again and working fine. Just waiting now to see if occurs again.

    I have a engine code of faulty p2453 dpf low pressure. I changed the senor still an issue. I was thinking its the filter needing a regen? Your throughts

    Hint* Scan tool says 'can't do DPF RE-Gen Too much soot' Tell the scan tool you've fitted a new DPF... then do the Re-gen
    Works every time..

      It is a fire hazard though, you gotta be careful overriding that safety message, the dpf could overheat if it's actually blocked solid.

    but why they say ti drive at Tot speed in Tot Rpm, but here you are not rolling and just keeping the engine reved up. Can't we do the same? Example I reach home, regen start, I just stay there with accelerator at rpm required without moving.

      You don't have cooling while staying still and that is dangerous because a DPF can reach over 500 degrees Celsius while regenerating.

      Presumably for better performance. Let's be clear though. theres a big difference between "tuning a car" and "flashing an off the shelf file".

      the other shop loaded in an unknown tune from an over seas supplier that they had no idea what it was other than "performaance"
      the problem is the tune turned off DPF regens and damaged the DPF
      :(

      Is it possible to put a switch somewhere to make the user do a forced regen? Like if I reach home and it's doing the regen, just apply the switch, once it is done switch off the regen and end of the story. this is also because the nearest point where you can have constant speed is 40km away from home.

    What happens if you drive the Car offroad? You buy a diesel for the Torque at low RPM= Long life clutch, but for this DPF you should not. Is it not stupid? DPF should not be installed on Offroad vehicles.

      The active regeration allows you to regenerate the filter while parked. 15 minutes every 300 miles and you are good to go

    DPF, it useless device. Storing Soot and Burn it out later (pollution). Complicate system for customer, expensive for maintenance and cause engine problem.

      And the car uses more diesel in order to push the smoke through the filter and double the normal fuel while regeneration occurs.

      It's less polliting because you burn the PM and avoid to clog cities with it.
      For the increased fuel consuption, it's only because drivers are idiots.
      Passive regeneration is the best but people forget to do it, so they had to use the active one

      @@Stubbyholder999 In passive regenerative filter. Basically it burns off all the soot with the heat of the exhaust and is capable of running until it is filled with ash. (basically the whole life of the car) The problem is that if you drive always downtown and for few kilometers, you won't reach the necessary temperature and the filter won't regenerate thus filling up with soot until it breaks.
      Modern filter employed active regen for this motive

    I love the regulations! Your 20 years old car is the biggest polluter, buy a new car! It has much lower emissions. But at one regulation period it vomits so much NOx, and CO, as a 20 years old in a half year.

      That "vomit" is concentrated to one area, unlike the 20 year old car that is polluting everywhere.

      @@vadkani7279 That's the point of regen. It does NOT go into the environment. Let me explain.
      When you have a highway full of nothing but 20 year old diesel cars, that highway will quickly become toxic and actually lethal to anyone who is breathing air in that area.
      However, if you swap all those 20 year old diesels with modern diesels, the air will become significantly less toxic in that area because all the diesels are producing little chemicals, and only a few of them will be perform regen on that highway. This strategy therefore means new diesels are less harmful than old diesels.
