In this video I will show you how to test an A/C compressor with an empty system and locate the leak. The air checks I have shown in the past do not work on this one. I had to use refrigerant and an electronic leak detector.

+1 on that. I've just fixed the AC on a pretty neglected (botched) Renault Trafic van.
Although there was no turn around from replacing the condenser, due to too many holes. With about 5 new O-rings added to the equation.
The fact is that it's up and running, literally revived from the dead after 5/6 years non working or so I've been told.
Aluminum tab broken on the compressor (welded). Clutch seized and not working, cleaned, repaired, back into service. Orifice tube cleaned back into service. Electrical side "not working" repaired and back into service.
But the "cherry on top" of all the mess that shouldn't have been done in there...
Somebody messed up the cabling and ended up switching the plug for the oil pressure switch, with the plug for the AC clutch. Yeah! that's a new one. LOL :-)
Whoever touched that had no idea of what they're doing so, along with that, went the fuse, cabling insulation, cable routing was all over the place. Main reason why they mixed it all up.
Either case it's done. AC tools used. Can of refrigerant, with basic single hose kit, compressed air, multimeter and a lot of diagnostic. ;-)

I managed a small fleet. Everything we have besides three vehicles has AC. Vehicles and equipment. We don't have the room for a shop quality AC machine. So if I have to do AC work and evacuate a system it goes to the atmosphere. I hate to do it but it is what it is. Never thought of using air and soapy water to find leaks in an AC system. I learn something from your videos every time I watch. Happy anniversary to you and the Mrs. Just celebrated our sixth anniversary on the 8th this month.

I just did a 2002 Siliverado, turned our to be the condenser. Horrible Freight has a sniffer for $70 that worked well. I had to take the grill off to find the leak and R & R condensor, good work, keep them coming

Joe Brito the Japanese are a bit questionable too...i did an evap core on a 09 prius. Omg what an ordeal . Did a heater core on a 02 jetta...just as bad
..sure I beat flat rate but one wonders what the engineer's are thinking.
Hey Paul, I've had good luck finding leaks with a small vacuum hose. Press a brass pipe on one end to make it rigid. Stick it up through the drain hose and in your ear. With compressed air in the system you'll hear a hissing. Also works well on compressor leaks.

I love A/C work. When I owned my shop 5o plus percent of my income was A/C repairs. I live in Modesto Ca that gets 115 degrees for months. I wonder how many lbs of R134a I have wasted by not "air charging" the system? 1oolbs???

I've found Simple Green works great for bubbles! I use about a 5-1 mix. And I can still use it to clean with!

Unfortunately winter is almost here and it won’t turn off now lol. Seriously though, it’s not a mechanical issue, it’s definitely not an electrical issue. The front dashboard cluster works except for high setting, and the rear overhead control cluster stays on no matter what. All fuses & relays are good.

Haha, love the blooper real, Paul. I've had way too many days like that, for sure! Used to have to get creative back in California; my understanding was that if I knowingly charged a leaking A/C system, I could lose my A/C license in CA. Had to get creative a couple times! One of my customer's kids had a stink bomb. Drew a vacuum on the system, slucked in the vapor, filled with air, and sure enough, leaking evap core!

I use the exact technique. I have no problem applying compressed air into the system since after I repair the leak I'm going to evacuate it.
Hello, Scannerdanner! Love your teaching/videos! Have a question. Why does my #10 fuse keeps blowing out on me? My 2007 F150 ac went out. I thought it was the compressor. Went to the junk yard and got another one. I tested it to see if it worked. It'd engage when ran current to it. Then checked if it pushed/sucked air. All function well. I replaced the compressor and added oil and freon. The ac blew COLD air! But don't you know that the original compressor had nothing wrong with it?! The #10 fuse would blow out when I'd suddenly push the gas. It was doing this on both compressors. Can't figure out why. I changed out the ac compressor relay. I put a new one in case the old one was getting hot causing the fuse to blow out. It wasn't the relay. I've done replaced the compressor two times. Fuse blows up on both. But ONLY when suddenly pressing on the gas. Why? Some say it's now an electrical problem. What's your opinion or professional response? Thanks in advance for your reply and assistance.

Enjoying these awesome AC videos! Part of the compressed air controversy might be that air contains moisture that uses up the Dessicant dryer bag inside the Accumulator/Dryer. In practice I don't know how true that is, might be valid concern though, & possibly already mentioned in comments. *On my air compressors I often have to drain condensation water out of them & never get it all out. I know they sell inline pneumatic water capture products for air hoses I should look into. Maybe already mentioned: Water + R134a = Hydrofluoric Acid; not the ac system's friend.
I've used compressed air to diagnose ac problems. for over 27 years ......and (that's when lots of cars had R12 systems in them) Y learn that from a technician at a Chevrolet dealership .. really old school trick y don't know but we never had any issues . come backs or warrantys..
so I used it just like scanner Danner does .to check the compressor Operation... and also for leaks ....but hey what can I say ..we love what we do ...tricks of the trade ...

Speaking about AC systems and how bad the damage can get, I've once seen one where the desicator's diafragme ruptured and all the silica gel cloged up the entire system: compresor, expansion valve, evaporator, condenser every thing.

I have a 96 suburban k1500 4wd. I replaced the xompressor, accumulator n orifice tube. It takes total 64 oz refrigerant. Can you tell me how many oz of refrigerant I have to put in so the compressor clutch starts kicking in? So far I have put in about 12 oz n the clutch does not kick in yet.. I don't want to waste refrigerant
Above 50 psi it should kick in
Thank you for your reply. My ac system is sitting at 110 psi both side with one can of 12 oz refrigerant but clutch still no engaging by itself. The only way I can make the clutch work is if I remove the ac relay from the fuse box and jump 2 terminals with a cable. Can you guide me of what could be the problem? I was thinking to get more freon an put at least 4 cans of 12 oz but not so sure.
I replaced the compressor bcuz I found the leak with your technique of compressed bubbles where coming out of the compressor. But my problem now is the new compressor clucth
When I forced the compressor clutch to emgage via the jump cable, the low side drops all the way to about 10 psi but I only keep the cable in for less than 10 seconds. The high side stays at a normal temp.

ScannerDanner ever see one where the ac compressor stays on? Tech 2 shows climate controller functions correctly requests ac on and off. However the relay is being energized (good relay) even though ac is off and recirculate is off too...
I have to look and see where I got it but there is an Adaptor for the Yellow hose to 1/4" NTP Female that will allow you to put the compressor directly to the Gauge Set. If I can find it I can send that to you. I use Nitrogen so I do not need that anymore.

spray your gauge hose connections too, I thought I had a leaky system (wouldn't hold a vacuum) turns out I didn't tighten the low end hose connection good enough at dial gauge set and it had a small leak.
Oh man I remember those jobs. The ones that'll make you pull out what remaining hair you have left.

2000 malibu I'm 90% sure refrigerant pressure transducer is the cause of my compressor not kicking on. Compressor clutch engages when I jump pin 30 and 87 ay the relay. the green light is on on the climate module in the dash.
Without the clutch engaged I got 5.02 ref at the pressure sensor under the high pressure service port near the radiator the signal wire is around 4.9 and I get zero when grounding signal to battery. does this pretty much confirm the pressure sensor is shot? Does the compressor need to be engaged to properly test? should it not be between 1 and 4v with car running?

I’m totally deaf in my right ear with normal hearing in my left. I cannot tell where sounds are coming from. Hearing in stereo would be better. So I have to improvise by using an engine ear to hear sounds when listening to engines. Would an engine ear be helpful at all in locating leaks small and large in automotive AC systems? Have you ever tried to use one?
Hi Paul just a comment where i used to work they would put dye in the refrigerant and use an infra red or ultra violet light to see where the leak was....from Fred in England.

A/C work is one of my favorites. I invested heavily in it the past few years - finally got a decent scale, a portable recovery machine, and a Bacharach H10 Pro sniffer. I enjoy doing it, & it's easy money, like you said. Great vid as always!

Yeah, no need to worry about that warning label that tells you R134a can be explosive when combined with shop air. That is like literally one of the first things they tell you in the book that you study for the test to become a certified AC technician.
Study that more. There are specifics to that. Not to mention I'm not adding shop air to a system with refrigerant in it. It was empty.

Ok how can i tel if my clutch is bd a found a valve leak and fix it but now the compressor wont come on at all all relays and fuses are good but clutch does not engage at all

Good test on the compressor with air but I have to admit I had a mini stroke hearing that run without AC oil.
:-) I've used this method hundreds of times on all types of compressors with absolutely zero issues. I've also been able to identify (on an empty system) faulty compressors and no power issues to compressors using this method. And that is the whole point of using it. Make sense?
I don't want to sell a customer on an AC repair only to find out when I am done that I have no power to my compressor or that the compressor is bad.
How many times have you encountered multiple leaks on the ac system? Happens to me all the time, i always check the whole system. On european cars where i always work on its 90% ac condensors that leak.

Add dye and charge with shop air and watch for dye coming from the evap case drain.

Bit of a weird question that doesn't pertain to this video. You talked about using the Verus input jacks and using the red lead in the red input and that you don't really have to do that. I've been looking through your videos for hours now any help is appreciated.
That is correct. You just need to turn the correct channel on, the one that you connected your leads to. In other words, I can connect my yellow leads to the red channel as long as I don't try to measure the signal on the yellow trace, I would need to turn the red trace on.
The color coding is going to help when you've got multiple items at the same time. Let's say you're testing four things all at the same time on the same graph, matching colors will help keep it straight. But no laws saying you HAVE to.

Why is high side and low side on same line?
Is there any reason you couldn't use duster spray as a refrigerant for test purposes? It is a registered refrigerant (R152A) I think, so environmentally friendly you can spray it straight into the air, and at $5.00 a can or so it seems to me like a good way to get some environmentally friendly refrigerant into a system for testing. You are going to evacuate the system anyway so even if it isn't compatible with the installed oil you aren't going to leave any in there. With the adapter you can buy at a parts store or Amazon it installs same as R-134A. Buy it at WalMart.
I run my truck AC on duster, the sniffer will detect it. Four can pack for $10 at Sam's club. Two years now in a 28 year old compressor, runs super cold and no adverse effects yet.
Identical experience here - so why not use this throw away, dirt cheap refrigerant to test with.

for sure! I'll add it to the list :-) But in my opinion, not much has changed. Sure the wideband is different but it certainly isn't hard to troubleshoot a bad one. The newer trims would be cool to sit down and put something together. I will eventually. Thanks Nathan
Why when i put freon in it worked for about three days then it wouldnt take freon so i changef presshure switch it kicked comphressure .but it wont take freon knaw drained air out but i notice black stuff when i un presshurized the hose from freon adapter
what are your AC pressures with the compressor engaged? and at rest?

Got a 2010 Sierra and the clutch will not engage unless I jump the compressor relay. When testing refrigerant levels with clutch on while it is jumped all pressures are good. Can not find any sort of low pressure or high pressure switch on this year on my truck or anywhere online. Does anyone have any idea where it is or any knowledge to drop because I’m lost and it’s hot in Florida.

You can find another gas replacement for detecting leak inside the evaporator but you need another gas detectors.
