I think that high pitched anime voice comes off as offensive because it contributes to the infantilization and fetishization of asian women, even if a non asian person is doing it. Certain archetypal female anime characters are harmful to asian women just like how some archetypal female characters in general american media are harmful to all types of women. Misogyny in anime is rarely addressed i feel like, and im not trying to take all the fun away from anime or anything because its no more guilty than any other form of media but i think its important to acknowledge those things or else you might end up promoting it or condoning it like the girl in the video. Also im editing this to say that my guess is kat or gabriel. Gabriel just seems like a naruto stan and kat seems like she could just be a cosplayer

@@user-kg6pr1iv4i Yeah, a huge portion of animes (maybe even the majority, but I can't say) have at least a few mysoginistic elements to it to the point that it becomes very normalized in the medium as a whole. (Ex: "casual" sexual harassment, sexualization of teenage girls, etc.) A lot of the time it's just so expected that an anime will have some of those things that a lot of anime fans don't even recognize those things as even that gross or creepy. And whenever someone brings it up, they're often shut down and told it isn't even a problem in the first place. Hell, most of them probably don't think these depictions fetishize asian women.

Ever since I was a child, I fell in love with anime. When I grew up, enjoying anime/manga as a black person was "geeky" and frowned upon. Over time, I stared to immerse myself in the culture and wanted to travel to Tokyo in order to study abroad.
I took a Japanese class in college behind my chairperson's back. (I was a Music Ed piano major and he only approved romance languages.) I ended up being an independent study student and my teacher was extremely gracious. I began to notice something important:
Japanese people don't speak like anime characters (in general). A lot of the phrases and stressing of certain vowels came from anime. A lot of stereotypes about high school in Japan were also being passed off as the norm, such as the roof of the school always being open for lunch. I wanted to wear traditional clothing because it was beautiful, but a part of me always knew not to do so. I realize that if I had, I would have begun doing what happens to black people all the time: straight up appropriating Asian culture.
Ignorance is bliss, but harmful and I'm glad that I was able to reel myself in and not become disrespectful to actual people. Some of my in-laws are biracial Hawaiian and Japanese, so it's nice to have exposure to real people outside of TV shows and movies. I hope that myself and others learn to be more considerate.
Have a nice day everyone. :)
P.S. I still cover anime endings from time to time, haha. Good music is good music.

@@BettyAlexandriaPride As a someone who is Japanese, wear the traditional clothing! It's not cultural appropriation if you have made an effort to learn about the culture, which it sounds like you have based on the fact that you've learned the language. If you go to a summer festival in Japan wear a yukata, we honestly love seeing foreigners enjoying the culture :)
If you don't feel comfortable with it that's completely okay, but thank you for trying to be respectful about a country that is often fetishized

The 'anime' character that white girls like Caity play contributes to the fetishization and infantilization of Asian women (like me) that we actually have to deal with in our everyday lives. I've met girls like her who will actually make comments about me being "kawaii" or "so beautiful I wish my eyes looked like yours hehe". They turn another culture into their personality and literally fetishize our culture and our appearances. You can like what you like and do what you want with your life but your actions still have consequences. I cringe because I know there's more to it than just a hobby. Mineta's whole character is just sexual harassment as a joke. Even his special move during one of the big training arcs was just him creating giant anal beads from his purple balls in the background. Part of this is due to me being poor and not being able to afford non-necessities, but even if I could, I've never really put a lot of value on materialistic or aesthetic things and have usually been more utilitarian when it comes to my possessions. If I can't and won't really use it, it usually just ends up sitting on a shelf or in a drawer somewhere, gathering dust. The only exception being if they're things I or someone close to me created.

A typical anime season is only 12 or 13 episodes, and nothing except the EXTREMLY popular shows get greenlit for more than 2 seasons - so that's 26 episodes max.
You're right that the mega-popular shows do go on for a very long time, but honestly, if you only like the popular shows, that's one of the big flags to me that you might not actually be an anime fan because you don't even know anything less popular. For example, Jarvis was suspicious of Gabriel because he only mentioned very, very, very popular shows (Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, and My Hero Academia). Each of those shows is very long (all over 100 episodes, some over 1000), but they're also extremely basic interests that are fairly easy to fake.
On the flip side, a show like Bannana Fish (which is the show that convinced people Noodle is a real anime fan) is only 24 episodes because it's fairly niche.
Also, Jennifer didn't talk much about any specific anime, she just talked about satellite interests that many fans also have - her big thing was Danganronpa, which isn't even an anime, it's a series of video games. Nonetheless, there wasn't a whole lot of skepticism over her because she just had the right "vibe" of an anime fan.
I think the winning strategy here if you're not an actual anime fan is to pick one obscure show that's just a single season long and learn all you can about that, and then fake your way through knowledge of the popular shows. And if someone catches you out saying something wrong about... idk, Dragon Ball or whatever, just fall back by saying "oh, I haven't actually watched it, shonen isn't really my thing"

The minute they said take a photo of your possessions I knew I'd be considered fake because I don't have much merch solely because when I got into anime it was before it blew up and was therefore MUCH harder to buy stuff. Really it was all about the manga and dvds. That was it. That was your flex. Extra flex if you had Japanese versions.
Now, it's more accesible but so are 99 other things I've always loved so while i can afford it and what not, my collection will never be anything SUPER impressive. But I do have a few star pieces so *shrug*

I cant believe someone was defending caity lol. Putting on a fake high pitched anime voice and doing the snippets of Japanese in an anime voice is so fetishizing. Its just cringe. It gives very much 15 year old energy

It reminds me of the 11-15 year olds i knew before i turned into a hermit and went to a school with 12 students in the morning and about the same later and luckily didn't run into any weeby teenagers after that.

i used to adore anime, but i went to a local anime club a couple of times and was made to feel like an idiot because i (who was like 14 at the time, had basically no money and could only buy whatever anime was available in HMV) i only watched dubbed anime (what was available to me), because i hadn't watched a bunch of obscure shows, because i didn't download stuff illegally and because i liked 'popular' shows. it put me off so much but i kept at watching anime for years.
i did watch mostly subbed later on, and for the most part i like it more than dub, but now i'm too tired to read subtitles so i dont watch anime any more, and i'm so behind on all the shows that i'll never catch up. so i'm an old-school anime fan. I still love me some Cardcaptor sakura, digimon, hunterxhunter, ouran high school host club, tenchi, and some other shows. but i'm not up to date by any means.

Honestly my anime story would be that when I was 15 years old I dyed my hair like Todoroki from BNHA (IM NOT JOKING) and I was waiting from the bus and someone shouted out the window of their car "TODOROKIIIII!!!" as they drove by.
I was a weeb. Like-- embarrassingly so
