  • Hi Everyone,
In this video I create a small machine that cuts highly accurate grooves in super flexible resin rubber boots/jointers that I have designed for my sensory smart glove. The issue with printing a substance/solution that is so flexible is that it’s impossible to achieve a high-quality component (High resolution) from an LCD printer. This is due to force required to release of FEP etc, when the printer head lifts at each layer. The resin am using is 40A.
So, what I have done instead is printed the 16 rubber boots with no groove and made this small machine for cutting neat concave grooves to match the convex walls of both the control boxes of my smart glove. The reason I have used such a flexible material here between the hand and the wrist is to reduce or remove any obstruction whilst a patient/person wears the glove throughout the diagnosis measure or rehabilitation activity.
The small system uses two microwave transformers, that are specifically rewound to suit the purpose of the small machine. The system initially had to transformers wired in parallel (seen in the video), but this was later altered to reduce the current by half on the secondary output. This dramatically stopped any burning or tarnishing of the rubber/resin components.
A wooden structure frame was built to support the tyre thread cutters using custom brackets and connections to allow full adjustment (height and width) of the cutter elements/knifes. A stainless bed and an aluminium guide/back stop are used to place the rubbers in the correct position before they are pushed through with a small accurate piece of wood (Jenga block).
Next step, assembly of the 16 smart gloves.
Enjoy the video 😊 Peace out and much love! Jeffrey

Why did you have to make 16 of them?

      Hi Ashlee,
I wanted to experiment with different resins/colours. Most of the gloves are highly detailed prototypes giving tight tolerances and smooth surfaces, for the functional parts. However, some aren't the most durable materials. In the end up I will select the best suited resins (properties and then colours second), but these pieces will always be there to promote and to keep me busy :-).
